New Beer Friday 4/28/23

I've often heard some lagers referred to at piss, but this stuff? I hear it's got a bit of a twang to it. Now that I've got your taste buds excited, this week's wide spectrum of flavors will have you salivating.

Jason Stock of Salt Lake Brewing Co. is live in the radio pub this afternoon on Beer Nerd Radio. We'll get into the transition from From Squatters to SL Brewing and all the new things coming our way. It all starts at 2pm today on 99.9fm KUAA.

Heber Valley - The Devil's Little Helper: This Belgian-style Blonde ale has a fruity aroma with notes caramel and bubblegum. Some sweet caramel with a candy-like sweetness and a subtle bitter bite. 5.0% - Only at Heber Valley

Desert Edge - Phantasmagorian EnginePours cloudy light orange with a 2 finger thick white foamy head that faded slowly and left very nice lacing coating the glass. Smelled and tasted of mostly citrus fruits with tangerine, grapefruit, orange and lemon zest leading the way, and then a sturdy malt backbone. A nice smooth mouthfeel that holds firm.  Quite tasty 8.0% - Only at Desert Edge.

Desert Edge - Tropical Fruit Storm: Missed this hoppy pale. 5.0% - Only at Desert Edge.

TF - Rezzberry: This imperial sour features raspberry and pomegranate. Named for DJ REZZ (yes, I know who REZZ is) A sour beer at its base. It’s starts with big puckering pomegranate then transitions to raspberry, then back & fourth. Tartness is medium and the 9.0% alcohol is well hidden. That could be an issue for some. 9.0% - Available at TF starting today.

Bewilder - Strawberry Rhubarb Coffee Sour: This may sound like a pretty busy beer, but it's got a fairly subtle approach. It starts tart from the base beer, with light strawberry then the coffee kicks in, which takes it to the end. This was apparently a huge hit at the Real Salt Lake parking lot home brew fest. 5.0% - Only at Bewilder.

Chappell -War Pig: This cascadian dark ale features a big roasted malt profile with countering bitterness that has some herbal and berry notes. 5.0% - only at Chappell.

Bootstrap - MEDAL AF Mosaic IPA: Missed this one. 5.0% - Found at Slackwater.

Bell’s - Light Hearted: When you're in Light pale ale territory don't expect it to be on the same level of a regular pale. With that being said, this brew has some good qualities, namely low ABV and calories. The flavor is just enough to get keep you interest with citrusy hops. 3.7% - Found at Beer Bar, Slackwater.

Bell's Two Hearted: Aroma of dry caramel malt, piney and citrus hops, pine needles, tangerine, faint mixed light stone fruit. Flavor is dry caramel malt, citrus and piney hops, pine needles, grapefruit and vague citrus. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. 7.0% - Found at Beer Bar, Slackwater.

New Beer Friday 4/21/23

Oy! It was another liver pounding research day yesterday, on top of it being 4/20. You're going to see a lot of exclusive beers to some craft beer pubs along with new stuff from many local brewers. And If your a fan of Denver's Our Mutual Friend Brewing Co., you'd better keep reading.

Beer Nerd Radio is damn excited to have Heber Valley Brewing visit the radio pub. Clint Jones, Head Brewer and Co-owner, will give us the low down the craft beer scene in Wasatch County along with the hidden gems you may not be aware of. And we have a special guest sitting-in for Steph. It all starts at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA

RoHa - Strength in Numbers Wheat Wine: I haven't had this yet, it debuts Saturday for RoHa's 6th Anniversary Party. It's described as a light colored, strong, malty beer with a slight alcohol burn. Wheat in the grist gives it good silky smooth head retention and mouth feel. This drops in our Brewers Select Cans, rings in at 9.8%, the strongest beer we have ever produced.  Available Saturday at Noon to go or over the bar.

RoHa - Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter: No notes on this. It debuts tomorrow. 5.0% - Limited quantity.

Fisher - Rotating IPA Series #3: The third beer in Fisher's rotating IPA series features a space theme. Pours a radiant golden/yellow churning up two fingers of creamy white foam. Aroma of Mango, passion/stone fruits, orange zest and a hint of yeast. Taste of Passion/stone fruits, mango, grapefruit, pineapple and some herbaceous floral in the finish. 7.6% - Only at Fisher.

Offset - Table Bier: A very simple bier consisting of almost exclusivity German Pilsner malt and a blend of Lorien and the finest Cascade hops we could get our hands on. These particular Cascades are known as Segal High Oil Cascades grown by the fine folks of Segal Hop Ranch in Yakima, WA. We honestly can't get enough of these amazing hops. They deliver wonderful layers of grapefruit zest and lemon oil as well as underlying floral and herbal characteristics that integrate seamlessly into the crackery malt character. Incredibly complex yet effortlessly drinkable with a head that lasts forever. 4.5% - Available at Offset and The Bayou

TF - OG Paradise: It’s chewy dank. It’s not super potent, & the alcohol is at a much more approachable level than the previous terp IPA, but this really captures the spirit of 420 in beer form. It’s nug-a-licious. 7.0% - Only at TF.

Haze Series Batch #1: This is a modified version of their original Hazy IPA. Same basic beer with different techniques. 8.5% - Available at TF.

TF/Fice - This DDH Pale Ale: features Cryo-strata hops. No notes on this one as it's being packaged this morning. 5.0% - Available at TF.

Wasatch - UT-X IPA: Citrus aromas come through as tropical and orange. Deep rind and freshly peeled. The orange flavors are prominent. The citra brings tropical melon notes and a touch of peach flavor, too. Light body, smooth, hoppy, light malt, no bitterness. Tasty, hoppy, light, and easy drinking. Nice combo. 5.0% - Available at West Side Tavern - Soon Everywhere.

Salt Lake Brewing - Dark Hex Nitro Honey Porter: Wow. That’s wonderful. Dark chocolate, medium bitterness, the nitro is creamy as hell. Jason Stock really has the nitro porters dialed in. 5.0% - Only at SL Brewing.

Roosters -Identity Crisis: Described as a Cold-Style WC/Hazy. It’s fairly dry with light hop character and hints of popcorn. It’s dry - as you’d expect from a CIPA, but not malty enough to give the hops something to build on. It’s fine. 5.0% - Available at all Roosters locations.

Policy Kings - Half Baked: Missed this new IPA brewed with Cascade, Columbus and Citra. 5.0% - Only on draft at Policy Kings.

Park City - Tangerine HazeBrewed with pale 2-row, flaked oats, white wheat, and maltodextrin then generously hopped with Citra, Nectaron, and El Dorado.

This beer pours a beautiful bright orange thanks to the addition of tangerine purée.  A touch of vanilla as well. 5.0% - Only at Park City Brewing.

Ogden Beer - März O-Tacks: A rare Märzen sighting in April. A wee light in color for a Märzen, but it’s within range. On the dryer side for style as well. Nice malt profile but it’s not an autumn Märzen, more of a brighter spring Märzen. Kind of Helles/Oktoberfest hybrid. 5.0% - Only at Ogden Beer Co.

Offset - Divi: This version features a hop known as HBC1019. Available at Offset and Bayou.

Chappell - PlayGround #2: This round has a heavy dose of Calypso in the whirlpool and then a 50/50 blend of some cryo and Lemondrop hops. 2lbs/bbl. 5.0% - At Chappell.

New Beer/Brewery Friday 4/14/23

All of this Bud Light drama makes me harken back to simpler days when hot bikini girls could clammer for the attention of a Bull Terrier. Those were more innocent times. (sarcasm implied).

Anyway, if non-macro-light-lagers are more your speed and if variety is what you crave? The New Beer Friday "research squad" (me) was able to track down a cornucopia of flavors this week that should keep you busy throughout the weekend.

This is also a New Brewery Friday as Helper Beer (Not Brewing) has released there first beers! Welcome to the Utah Beer Family!

UTOG just celebrated their fourth birthday, so we figured it would be the perfect time to get them on Beer Nerd Radio and reminisce about how they got here and what's coming up next. That'll be at 2pm today on 99.9FM KUAA.

Helper Beer - Nitro Stout: This is the first beer to come out of Utah's newest brewery. Sad to have missed this. 5.0% - Only at Helper Beer Co.

Helper - Vista View: This American pale Sad to have missed this. 5.0% - Only at Helper Beer Co.

Talisman - Adventures in IPA: This version in Talisman's rotating IPA series is a double IPA, made with Vic Secret, El Dorado, and Citra hops. It dials in at 8.4% and is only available at Talisman's beer store.

Salt Flats - Testarossa RedToasty and fruity malts with some citrus, berry and herbal hops. The whole package is quite authentic tasting and it goes down quite fast. Available at Salt Flats and both Garage Grill restaurants.

TF - Horse Thief: This is a representation in beer form of a cocktail made at Blue Sky Ranch in Wanship, called Horse Thief. The cocktail is a blend of Casa Noble Reposado Tequila, High West Campfire Whiskey, Green Chartreuse, Ginger Syrup, Lime juice and blackberries. Templin’s interpretation has a sour base beer with noticeable lime, chartreuse, berries and ginger way in the back. It’s quite a floral sour that has a very spring-like feel to it. Super quaffable and bright. No tequila was used in this beer. 4.8% - Only at TF.

Grid City - Toasted Coconut Vanilla Coffee Nitro Brown AleBrewed with SSL's Old Cuss Coffee House Blend Expresso. Nice coffee aroma, some coconut as well. Coffee Carries through in the taste. The coconut takes a backseat like in the aroma, but works quite well. This will jive coffee lovers. Great blend from Old Cuss Coffee 4.8% - Only at Grid City.

Strap Tank - Honey Bandit Belgian Blonde Ale: Honey Bandit is a Belgian Blond ale brewed with wildflower honey. Wildflower honey is a raw unfiltered honey which gives it a stronger flavor than clover honey. The Belgian blond has a ton of honey notes but also a grainy sweet malty character and a touch of earthy hop notes. It also has those classic Belgian yeast flavors, a little orange and lemon. 5.0%

Kiitos - Tropical Haze IPAThis latest version has massive melon & grape qualities. Probably from some potent strain of Thiolized yeast. Big mango & hints of citrus too. Some onion in the finish. Overall: it’s quite fun. 5.0% - On draft and in cans at Kiitos.

Kiitos - Finnish Olut Lager: This Amber Lager is a rotating series that is debuting with this amber lager. It comes across as a Vienna Lager, full of caramel and nutty and toasty grains. The finish is clean and dry. 5.0% - On Draft and in cans at Kiitos.

Proper - Disco Death Squad: This is a Helles at its base with prickly pear added and blood orange. The prickly pear seems to dominate, leaving the citrus towards the back of the palate. Light & fruity. 5.0% - Only on draft at all Proper locations.

Proper - Jet Ski: This juicy pale has a light body with nice citrus and papaya and pineapple flavors. Drinks quite well. Might have a new pool beer. 5.0% - Only on draft at all Proper locations.

Bewilder - Double ESB (non-barrel aged): We'll discuss this 9.8% ale live on Beer Nerd Radio this afternoon. Available at Bewilder today.

Mountain West Perry: Missed this 100 percent pear cider. 6.5% - Only at Mountain West.

Scion - Ginger & LemonScion's Vice Verde cider, infused with real ginger & lemon, limited single-keg release! 6.20% - Only at Scion.

The following are exclusive to the Bayou - All notes are from their makers

Brasserie Gode - Biere Brut: A pale golden color and floral flavor, blends with a sparkling wine recipe well-known for its tiny bubbles and amazing brightness, crowned with a light and airy foam. From essences to substances, the brewing secrets, followed by a maturation on lees in the bottle for several months, give birth to an exceptional sparkling nectar, worthy of the greatest sparkling wines. A delicate and regular riddling process ("Remuage") on a Champagne rack brings the beer an absolute clarity.

Siren - Caribean Chocolate MoleChilli and chocolate is a classic combination, and we've opted for using Ancho, Pasilla and Guajilla varieties for a spectrum of beautiful flavour. Further layers of mole come in the form of spicy, cinnamon notes of Amburana, delicate nutmeg and luxurious vanilla. We're also using an experimental HBC472 hop, known for its barrel aged and vanilla character - so although we don't have a barrel aged beer in this year's selection, this creation definitely shares some of the sensibilities.

Epochal - The Primum Mobile: Porter fermented for over a year in neutral oak

It's powerful and has depth of roast that offers dark chocolate, espresso and nutmeg biscuits with inky black cherries and a subtly balsamic acidity. It has beautiful balance, concentration and finesse. 8.8%

Pohjala - Must KuldA rich porter with smooth honey notes. Brewed with lactose for that extra silky texture. Enjoy on its own or as a dessert at the end of a decadent meal. Contains barley malt and lactose. 7.8%

Pohjala/To Ol - Sticks and Stones: An Imperial Stout brewed with raspberry branch tea, raspberries, and liquorice - aged in Oloroso sherry and Ruby port barrels. 13.5%

Fantome - Dark SpiritusA Dark Wintery Saison. Notes of black pepper, malt and a touch of clove.

Fantome - 5 Monkeys SomewhereA Collaboration between Fantome and Saint Somewhere Brewing. Spiced, Bitter, Lit Belgian Blonde.

De Ranke - Vielle ProvisionVieille Provision is a storage beer made with a selection of the best barrels of old beer in our brewery. The beer also forms the basis for Cuvée De Ranke and Kriek De Ranke and matures for at least one year in oak barrels. Taste: The beer is mildly sour, with subtle woody notes. 7.5%

De Ranke - MirakelAs big fans of the Geuze style, we wanted to try our hand at making a beer with spontaneous fermentation. With success, much to our surprise. In addition to its own Spierelambique, named after a small river that runs near the brewery, two other traditional lambics from the Pajottenland are mixed in Mirakel. It is a blend of lambics of one, two and three years old. 5.5%

De Ranke - Cuvee de RankeCuvée De Ranke is a blended fermentation beer, a combination of beer aged in barrels and lambic. Taste: Full sour taste with a hint of oak due to wood aging. 7.0%

De Ranke - Noir De DottingiesNoir de Dottignies is a complex, dark top-fermented beer, brewed with 7 different malts including chocolate and roasted malts. Taste: Firm roasted malt flavor with a soft hop bitterness. 8.5%

De Leite - Cuvee Mam'zelleTrouble in paradise! A frivolous damsel enters the scene. It is a young lady that over a few months matured in oak wine barrels, which gave her a deep but soft-bitter tannin aftertaste. The taste is full and complex because the brewers induced a controlled souring during the ripening process. The Mam zelle is by origin a blond beer. Ripening gave her a soft red glow. This is the reason why she is called high-blond'. The alcohol percentage is 8.5 volume. Brewers maintain that she is 'untameable'.

De Leite - Sour'ise KriekThe Enfant Terriple is put for 6 months on cherries: 250 g sour, un-pitted cherries per litre beer. During this time, the bacteria are given time to digest all sugars even further and to let the soft natural souring have its way. Meanwhile, the cherries slowly donate their blood-red colour and their succulent taste. Part of this cherry also is transferred to the oak wine barrels where it - in a grow-bed of lactobacillus - during a year adds further to a woody souring and softening. The result is a triple-kriek 'pur sang'.

De Leite - Fils A Papa 13Blond Tripel on Whisky Barrels. water, barley malt (gluten), wheat malt (gluten), oats (gluten), rice, hops, yeast, herbs, sugar, whisky

Tommie Sjef is a beer blendery from Den Helder, the Netherlands. We make wild ales which are fermented and aged in wooden barrels. All our beers are fermented using our own wild yeast and bacteria culture. This gives the beer, after extensive ageing - 1,5 up to 4 years in oak barrels, its typical slightly sour taste, and eccentric aromas. A bottle of Tommie Sief often contains a blend of beers originating from a selection of barrels, differing in age. Every barrel develops differently, each showing its unique characteristics. It is the art of blending to add balance, depth and joy.

Tommie Sjet - Sprong75cl, 7.1% ABV, bottled on 10-10-2022. Ingredients: water, malted barley, wheat, hops, sage, wormwood, wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria.

New Beer Friday 4/7/23

Locally hops reign supreme on this New Beer Friday. Even the lagers pop with hoppy goodness. I have some excellent news! Jester King beers are now in the market at select beer pubs and restaurants. The only bummer is that all we got was saisons. granted they make brilliant farmhouse ales, but a little variety would have been nice. Oh well, welcome to the market Jester King!

On Beer Nerd Radio today, Steph and I will be chatting with Helper Brewing! If you're curious and wanting all of the latest news on their beer and opening date, I'd recommend canceling your plans between 2-3pm today and tune into our live broadcast on 99.9fm KUAA.

Offset - Guest Experience: This "New World Pils" is a collaboration with New World Brewing out of Arvada, CO. The resulting beer has a unbelievable floral nose very akin to Honeysuckle. Underlying notes of lemon/lime zest and pink starburst present as the beer warms. We've never brewed anything that tastes or smells quite like this. Pink is definitely going to be a hop we dive deeper into in years to come. 5.0% - Available at Offset, The Bayou, Slackwater.

Offset - Riwaka: This single hop pale ale. Grapefruit pith, lime zest, tropical fruit, dankness, and this hard to pinpoint herbal character all make for a really interesting drinking experience that seemingly changes every time you take a sip. 5.0% - Available at Offset, The Bayou, Slackwater.

Offset/Grid City - S33ing Thr33S: This TRIPA is a local collaboration between Offset and Grid City. A simple blend of Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic hops. Lotsa Cryo-hops full of orange Creamsicle (no lactose), honeydew melon, mixed berries, pineapple, resin, and some lovely fresh hop zap. Pithy finish. This is wonderful, and I don't say that much about TRIPAs. 10.0% Available at Offset, Grid City, The Bayou and Slackwater.

Grid City - Hazy IPA #2: Much more to style than Hazy #1. That being said, this is kind of a hybrid between WC & NE IPAs. This is fruity & tropical with thiolized yeast adding vine flavors. The hop bitterness leans toward the WC-style having a lingering bitter finish. Tasty stuff. 7.5% Available at Grid City.

TF - Citra Ass Down!!: Citrus and pine, some caramel malts and round fruits. Finish is bitter but not overpowering by any means. Mostly in the pith/citrus side of things. It's balanced with a little bit of earthy hops. 5.0% - Only at TF.

Bewilder - Gecko Fingers: This West Coast style-DIPA boasts 80 IBUs. It pours clear and golden. Aroma is floral and pine, flavor is bright and adds deeper notes of earth and grapefruit. Pith flavors are round with some peach and hints of melon.  Very well dialed in, the result is powerful without being punishing. 9.0% - Available at Bewilder. Soon To DABS.

Proper - SLC PilsAroma is lightly hoppy with some American character as opposed to all noble hops. A nice clean, light, and sweet grainy lager character is present. Taste is a tally very nice. A soft bready biscuity malt is present throughout with some nice light floral American and noble hops with a small bitter kick on the finish. 5.0% - Available at all Proper locations.

Strap Tank - My Beer My Choice: This Pink Boots sour beer pours a slightly hazy amber color with a fairly small head. Aroma is very mild...moderate bitterness and moderate tartness is all I get out of it. Taste is also fairly mild. I get some kettle sour acidity, light bitterness, maybe a some general fruitiness. 5.0% Available at Strap Tank (Springville), also found at West Side Tavern.

Red Rock - Forbidden Fruit: Missed this raspberry and ginger sour ale. 5.0% - Available at Red Rock's Beer Store, Soon to Harmon's Grocery.

Scion - St. Olafricot: This version of Scion's relatively new house cider features Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith apples, and apricot purée. The difference here in this new version is that it's "matured" on toasted French Oak. Very Limited release. 7.6% - Only at Scion Cider Bar.
