New Beer Friday 5/26/17

Happy New Beer Friday! I hope you all have a safe and long weekend. There's a lot of tasty stuff out there to help you kick off summer right.

Cigar City: Jai Alai - This IPA pours a very clear, golden copper color with a nose that has pine and citrus. The taste follows the nose, with some pine up front, followed by a huge wave of malts. The finish is full of bitter citrus and pineapple.7.5% ABV @ Dick n' Dixie's, DABC, Bayou

Perrin: Black Goat Lager - Not tried this one yet. 5.8% ABV @ Bayou, DABC

Payette: Aura: Guava and Hibiscus - Not tried this yet, sounds interesting. 4.0% ABV @ Beer Bar

Firestone Walker: Luponic Distortion #6 - It has a nose of pine and citrus - a wee bit of pepper too. Big earthy bitterness dominates the taste with grapefruit peel and pine backing up some crackery malts. Not my favorite version of Luponic, but it's still pretty great. 5.9% ABV @ Beerhive, Beer Bar

Firestone Walker: Leo vs Ursus - The nose has mango, pineapple, vanilla and caramel. The taste starts with apricot, pineapple and orange peel. Sweet caramel malts come next with tropical and earthy hops backing it all up. finishes slightly sweet. For a DIPA it has a great balance - not too cloying and easy to drink. I liked this one a lot. 8.2% ABV @ BeerHive, Beer Bar

Laughing Dog: The Dogs of Helles - The nose has apple sweet grains with floral hops. The taste has a bit of creamed corn and nutty caramel. Finishes with grassy/floral hops. 4.0% ABV @ Harmons

Laughing Dog: The DogFather - The nose has chocolate, roasted malt, plum and bourbon. The taste starts with molasses, licorice, fudge abd wood. Vanilla, raisin coffee and bourbon. A bit of ash in the finish. Nice barrel aged stout. 11.0% ABV. @ Slackwater

Proper: Hop vs Hop 7 - This is being released today. This version is hopped with Eureka and Simcoe hops. 8.2% ABV. @ Proper

Avenues Proper: New Zealand Lager - This version is hopped with Dr. Rudi and Rakau hops. Not triedit yet. 4.0% ABV. @Avenues Proper

Cheers!

Cigar City Hits SLC

Back in  January, I had the pleasure to tell you all that Tampa, Florida's Cigar City Brewing was coming to our market. Today, I can happily say that their Jai Alai IPA is in the capitol city. The beer's name pay tribute the Basque game where players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour.

Pours copper in color with notes of citrus and tropical fruit in the aroma. Flavor has upfront citrus bitterness with a hint of caramel and citrus and tropical fruit hop notes in the finish.

I know that Dick n' Dixie's has some Jai Alai and that bars and restaurants (including Squatters/Wasatch) will be picking it up very soon as well.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday's "Spicy" Edition

Not even Press Secretary "Spicy" can deny that this is one Hell of a great New Beer Friday. "We have the best New Beer Friday, nobody has it better".

Bohemian's Lebowski Beer: This is a light golden lager showcasing Polish Lubelski hops. Prominent floral, lemon, and spicy aromas are followed by a soft herbal hop flavor. Graham cracker and grainy malt sweetness is balanced with the perfect bitterness that abides to your palate. This beer really ties the room together, Dude. 4.0% ABV. This is a super small batch brew available for a limited time at Brewvies and at the Bohemian Brewery.

Uinta's West Coast - Style IPA: Tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple and mango. Light toasted bread comes next. The sweetness from the malt creates ghostly melon and berry notes, that transition into white pepper and pine. Towards the end an herbal and grassy earthiness rounds out the flavors leaving a dry and slightly puckering finish. 6.3% ABV @ Uinta - soon everywhere.

Epic's CitralushThe nose has tropical fruit, hops and malt. The flavors are pithy grapefruit, resiny hops and malt. The finish is lightly bitter with a fruity hops aftertaste. 7.2% ABV. Limited supply in growlers at Epic's bottle shop.

Elysian's Superfuzz: The nose has citrus with herbal hoppy notes. The taste has mellow blood orange citrus flavors, mild hops, very present dryness bite mixed in with a minor floral flavor. It has an obvious extract taste, but it doesn't deter fro the enjoyment too much. 6.4% ABV @ DABC, Beer Bar.

Shades of Pale's Misconception Belgian IPAThe nose is fruity with straw, Belgian yeast notes, bread and citrusy hops. Flavor follows, with some of the fruit ester notes from the yeast well melded with citrusy hops. Fairly dry and not overly bitter. 8.0% ABV @ SOP's Pub and bottle shop.

Shades of Pale's Berlinerweiss w/ Plum: Moderately tart. The plum adds some freshness. It basically like unripened plum. Light and totally crushable. Very limited. 3.5% ABV @ SOP's Pub

Shades of Pale Brett Saison w/ cherry: This will be bottled this afternoon. I'm really looking
forward to trying this one. Only at SOP's Pub and bottle shop.

Shades of Pale's Hogs Head #4 Bourbon Barrel Belgian Quad: Very reminiscent of Boulevard's Bourbon Barrel Quad. Sweet candy sugar with sour berry tartness and a Bourbon back. AND it's in a 12oz. bottle. This is a nicely complex beer, one of SOP's best beers yet. 13.0% ABV @ SOP's Pub and bottle shop.

Strap Tank's Ypres Saison: I haven't made it down there yet to try this. This Saison is made with 100lbs blueberries/50lbs blackberries. I really need to try this. 4.0% ABV

Fisher's Yellowbelly Amarillo Sunshine: Not tried this one yet. The name has my attention though. Described as crisp and citrusy. 4.0% ABV @ Fisher

New Beer Friday 5/12/17

This week's New Beer Friday finds are mostly local, including the highly anticipated Flanders Red from Uinta Brewing and home brewer Rob Rutledge. Have a great weekend!

Bohemian's Pro/Am Lagerpalooza IPL - Nose of light citrus fruit, herbal hop notes. Flavors follow the nose with honey and citrus notes on the front and sides, a bittering herbal hops note to the middle and rear, and a toasty grain flavors in the back and aftertaste. Very nice.6.0% ABV @ Bohemian

Desert Edge's Kellerbier - This is an unfiltered German Helles. The aroma is full of sweet grainy malt. The flavor is doughy malt and subtle spicy and floral German Saaz hops. Low hop flavor and bitterness let the pilsner malt dominate for a malty yet light and refreshing lager. @Desert Edge

Squatters' Laurel Lager - Herbal and grassy nose. The taste had sweet and toasted grains with balancing herbal and grassy hops. Very nice lager. 4.0% ABV @ Squatters

Uinta Cahoots Flanders Style Red - This came out yesterday afternoon, and I missed out. I'll have tasting notes this afternoon at 3:30pm on KBER 101. 8.0% ABV @ Uinta

Deschutes Pacific Wonderland - The nose has sweet biscuit, earthy and lemony hops. Flavor follows and has a nice dry finish on a well balanced. 5.5% ABV @ Bayou, DABC

Upslope Citra Pale Ale - Not had this yet. Upslope describes it as prominently featuring Citra hops, our Citra Pale Ale delivers pungent grapefruit and tropical fruit aromas on the nose with a semi-dry finish. Juicy notes imparted by the hops pair with the light caramel malt character to balance this drinkable, “go-to” American Pale Ale. 5.8% ABV @ Bayou, DABC

Fisher Brexit Brown Ale - haven't tried this yet. 4.0% ABV @ Fisher

There are more new addition to your American Craft beer Week Calendar from Bohemian and Roosters. You can find them here.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday/Utah Beer Challenge Winner

Happy Cinco De Mayo and Nueva Cerveza Viernes (New Beer Friday)! If you're looking for some locally made beer with some south of the boarder flare - Epic's Los Locos or Beerito from Oskar Blues/Utah Brewers Cooperativeare just a couple of the many options out there for you to try. If not? I found five new brews that I think will make you happy.

Roosters Femintation American Ale - Full of char and roasted malt. Piney hops back it up with subtle alcohol. Very clean finish. Probably my favorite Roosters beer ever.7.5% ABV @ Rooster, Slackwater

Stone Enjoy By 5/29/17 - Tangerine/Grapefruit and mango mostly with a good dose of malts - nice balance. Nice body with a fairly dry finish. Surprisingly drinkable for a 9.4 % ABV DIPA.It's Fresh, fresh, fresh! @ Bayou, Beer Bar, Slackwater, Beerhive

Stone Dayslayer IPL - This one is a winner. Citrus peel, melon, berries & herbal hops dominate. Some Vienna malts backing it up. Spicy & dry in the finish. Quite tasty, you should try this.7.5% ABV @ Beer Bar, Slackwater, Bayou

Talisman Saison - Missed out on trying this one. Look for earthy yeast tones, mild to moderate tartness. Lots of spice and with a medium bitterness. This is under their Season Ale label.

Proper Ragman Belgian IPA - This new higher alcohol version of their Belgo-IPA. The fruity and spicy esters from the yeast dominate the palate for the most part. The hop bill which comprises of some citrus peel flavors and botanicals play pretty well with these flavors. A fairly full bodied IPA. 6.0% ABV @ Proper Brewing

Today, you have declared that Shades of Pale's Grapefruit Revolution is the tastiest, locally made beer of them all. This sleeper, citrus bomb takes full advantage of it's name imparting huge citrus notes in a little IPA package. If you haven't had a chance to try this session-y dream you're really missing out. It's available at most grocery, C-stores and of course the brewery located at 2160 s. West Temple, Salt Lake City.

Trent/Alex/Marcio, I invite you to display this hastily crafted certificate of awesomeness wherever you see fit. Above the shitter comes to mind. Congrats again to Shades of Pale Brewing.

Thanks to everyone for participating in the High and Low Point Challenges. Feedback is always welcome.
