New Beer Friday 10/12/18

I don't see what the big deal is. I mean brewers are artists; they create works of art that are immediately put through our own personal shredders, which are then (usually) discarded unceremoniously away from prying eyes. I submit to you the following works of art for you to do as you will. I'd recommend drinking them.

*Just added  Uinta Saddleback Brut IPA: light hay in color very clear with a hint of chill haze. The aroma is mostly light tangerine peel with floral notes. Very little in the way of malt sweetness, but you can tell it’s there. The bitterness is mostly citrus peel with more herbaceous hops and a hint of pine in the finish. Very dry, with prickly carbonation. 4.0%. Just released at Uinta’s pub in cans and on draft.

Toasted Barrel - Fresh Hop IPA: Sadly I missed this new fresh hop. I guess they used four pounds of fresh local hops in the whirlpool plus a healthy dose in dry hopping. The hops were provided and grown by James at Solstice Malt. It's described as a "very light, fresh and hoppy ale". 4.0%. Available at Toasted Barrel.

Toasted Barrel - Young Bruin: This sour brown ale is not your typical Oud Bruin, hence the name. The tartness has a lemony citrus twang with a moderate dose of toasted and caramel malts. It's not as fruity as you'd expect, but it does provide an adequate balance of tart malt. 5.9%. Available at Toasted Barrel, Beer Bar.

RoHa - Fuzzy Pucker: I missed out on this one. This a peach sour ale. 4.0%. I will have tasting notes for you later today at 3:30pm on KBER101 with Mick and Allen.

RoHa - Tile of Life: This is RoHa's Pale ale with Mosaic hops. As with the Fuzzy Pucker I'll have tasting notes at 3:30pm on KBER101.

Talisman - Nut Brown Ale: Aroma is of toasted, nutty malt, chocolate, cacao and some piney hops. Body is light and slightly crisp. Taste is similar to aroma. Finish is long and semi-dry. Good session ale. Only on draft at Talisman

Squatters - Juicy IPA: I found this on draft at Beer Bar yesterday. It starts out like any other Juicy IPA with lots of nice tropical flavors then it switches gears with creamy milk sugars adding sweetness and body. I guess it's more of a milkshake IPA. Very tasty. 4.0%.

Shades - Kveik #4: This is similar to Shades' gold medal winning Kveik #1, however this one was made with Galaxy, Mosaic and Citra hops vs #1's Nelson Savin hops. It also slightly sweeter which gives it a little more balance between malt and tart. Very nice sour. 6.3%. Available at Shades.

Boulevard - Love Child #9: Peppery cherry with balsamic sourness mixed with a medley of various berries. It's semi-dry, puckering and nicely balanced with a good dose of oak in the finish. Sour fans will like. 8.4%. Available at Beerhive and Bayou.

Boulevard - Whiskey Barrel Stout: There’s a good dose of chocolate and roasted malt up front with slight coffee notes. The Barrel has a nice presences with complimenting vanilla. There is a bit of alcohol heat in the finish. Nice. 11.8%. Found at the Bayou.

Great Divide - Heyday Modern IPA: Citrus sweetness with a medium amount of caramel provide a nice platform for a generous amount of tropical and grapefruit bitterness. Finishes dry and slightly bitter with resinous pine. The alcohol is a comfortable 5.8%. Available at the Bayou.

Cheers!

New Beer and Brewery Friday 4/21/17

I love it when a new brewery hits on Friday. It's like Pie and Beer Day got all freaky with Christmas! So we'll start this special New Beer Friday off with all the new suds the RoHa Brewing Project which will officially open at 11am today.

The RoHa Brewing Project - Back Porch Pale Ale: Clear ruby color. The nose is mostly bready malts, with a bit of pine and citrus peel. The taste starts malty with caramel and butterscotch which quickly slides into an herbal hop bite combined with pine and orange peel. 4.0% ABV @ RoHa

The RoHa Brewing Project - Big Green Couch DIPA: Clear ruby color. The nose has caramel, toffee, grapefruit and light orange. The taste starts with toffee and caramel along with light melon notes. Grapefruit comes next with a bolder and lingering finish of caramel sweetness, some light alcohol, some grapefruit and light citrus flavors, as well as some healthy hop bitterness. Plenty of sweetness up front here as well. 8.0% ABV @ RoHa

The RoHa Brewing Project - Kensington Grand Saison: Clear ruby color. The nose is grainy and fruity with some light yeast phenols and spice. The taste is less grainy than aroma, not much biscuit or wheat, then sweeter esters with some light yeast byproducts. It's sweet, bready and lightly dry. Earthy hops round out the end. Very light dryness on the finish. 6.8% ABV @ RoHa

The RoHa Brewing Project - Three Deep American Ale: Clear ruby color. The nose is light with some biscuit malt and earthy/leafy hops. The taste has light earthy and leafy hops mixed with lightly sweet biscuit malt. Some citrus peel on the back end dries out the finish. 4.0% ABV @ RoHa

The RoHa Brewing Project - Thursday IPA:  Clear ruby color. The nose has slight citrus, pine and is a bit bready. The taste starts with lemon, pine and tangerine. Malt sweetness comes in next with some floral bitterness. Clean finish but the hops still lingers on the palate. 6.5% ABV @ RoHa

Wasatch - Snowbird Session IPA: This being released today at the Utah Brewers Cooperative. It's described as being North East Style Session IPA. 4.0% ABV @ UBC

Squatters - Aussie Hop Pale Ale: Grapefruit in the nose with some caramel. The taste has some berry qualities with vague sweet citrus flavors. Some pithy bitterness in the finish. Nice, super crushable. 4.0% ABV @ Squatters

Boulevard - Changeling: The nose is tart berries and not much else. The taste starts with a big tart punch. Plum and raspberries dark malts dominate. Not terribly complex but very tasty. Mouth feel is a little prickly but it works well. Medium body. Probably a little pricey for what it is. 7.3% ABV

Fisher - The Chocolate Conspiracy Nitro Stout: . Faint milk chocolate and hints of roasted malt in the nose. The taste follows with subtle cocoa and roasted malts. Not super sweet but there is a hint of vague spices in the finish. On the light side. 4.0% ABV @ Fisher Brewing

Samuel Adams - Rebel Juiced IPA: Not tried this one yet. @DABC 6.2% ABV

Dog Tag - Legacy Lager: Not tried this one yet. @ DABC 5.0% ABV

New Beer Friday 3/31/17

Sometimes you need to trust those who are more brilliant than yourself. Happy New Beer Friday!

Uinta Hopscursion #2 - This version has more pineapple notes than the previous version due to the addition of Mosaic, Simcoe, and Denali hops. The 100% brett fermented base is full of funky, doughy yeasty notes that give this beer a full and round body. Drink this fresh! This brett beer is not for aging. 6.5% ABV @ Uinta,

New Belgium Citradelic - Not tried this one yet. it's described as being a Tangerine IPA brewed with Citra hops, orange peel and orange. 6.0% ABV @ DABC

Stone Enjoy by 4/20/17 - This DIPA is very clean and balanced. It's citrucy proifile is assertive but not over the top and it's 9.4% ABV is well hidden. A must try. @ Bar Bar, Beerhive, Slackwater, Dick n Dixie's

Proper New Zeangland Hazy Session IPA - Featuring Waimea, Motueka, and Wai-iti hops. These impart the tropical notes you've come to expect with grapefruit peel, pith and a wee bit o' pine. The hops leave a lingering bitterness on the sides of the tongue. Quite nice. 4.0% ABV @ Proper

Boulevard Rye on Rye X: Sazerac Cocktail - I haven't tried this one yet, but I'm a big fan of the previous versions. Add the Sazerac Rye Barrel to it and I imagine that it's going to be brilliant! This beer is based on the New Orleans cocktail, the Sazerac. The official recipe is composed of rye whiskey, absinthe or Herbsaint, a sugar cube and bitters all garnished with a lemon peel. To translate this classic cocktail into a beer, Boulevard brewed batches of the base rye beer that received spice additions mimicking bitters as well as lemon peel during the boil. The resulting wort was fermented with their house Scottish ale yeast before being aged in freshly emptied Templeton Rye barrels. 11.8% ABV @ The Bayou

Firestone Walker Bravo - Incredibly rich and smooth and complex with notes of graham cracker, tobacco, bourbon, coconut, orange marmalade, cherries, raisins, toffee, apricots, kiwi, and pralines. Holy shit! This is a phenomenal barleywine that you must try. @ Beerhive, Beer Bar, Slackwater

The Results are in, and it looks like it's going to be a 2 Row party in the finals this year. As you can see below, the voting was very close. But in the end 2 Row's fan base won out. 2 Row has pretty much dominated the entire competition, coming a long way in their brief time in the market. So, 2 Row's Tastes Like Citrus IPA and Dark Alley Imperial Stout will go head to head on Monday to see which beer is most beloved. After that we will begin the Session Beer Competition.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 2/5/16

There are so many tasty option out there today, you'll never have time to work them in. I'm sure some of you will try.

Payette Apres Extra Pale Ale - Not tried this yet. It's described as having an orange/amber color with flavors or caramel malts and heavy piney hops. This beer is brewed exclusively for Snowbasin Ski Resort. 4.0% ABV @ Snowbasin

Shades of Pale Publican Pale Ale - Not had a chance to try this big boy version of Shades of Pale's Publican. It's got an ABV of 6% and is only available at SOP's bottle shop.

Hopworks Urban Brewery Non Stop Hef Hop - Not really new, but this beer are now available at select grocery and convenience stores, so I thought it was worth a mention. This basically a White IPA. It has a dank piney/citrusy nose with a taste that follows. some doughy wheat is present beneath the hops. Light, hoppy and refreshing. 3.8% ABV @ Beer Bar - Grocery

Hopworks Urban Brewery Totally Radler - Looks like a witbier, smells like lemon rind and tastes lemony - but not too tart. If you're into radlers, you'll like this. The lemon isn't too crazy.  3.1% ABV @Grocery

Boulevard Tell-Tale Tart - Not tried this one yet. It's described as having subtle acidity with a soft, biscuity malt character, suggesting, rather than announcing its tartness. Beginning with a bracing sharpness at first sip, the ale mellows on the palate to a smooth and faintly lingering finish. 6.2% ABV @ DABC

Boulevard The Calling - This billed as Boulevard's most heavily hopped beer ever, bursting forth with unmistakable tropical fruit and pine hop aromas and flavor supported with a slightly sweet malt character, tapering to a crisp, dry finish. 8.5% ABV @ DABC

Sierra Nevada Tropical IPA - Clear golden color with a nice full head. The nose is full of citrus, mango and oranges with a toasty biscuit backbone. The taste is appropriatly bitter with a little bit of mango more orange and a little bit of lemon. This is damn delicious. 6.7% ABV @ Beer Bar

Laughing Dog 219 (two-one niner) Pilsner - Described as having a grainy aroma with some corn, color is light straw with brilliant clarity. Light malt notes are balanced with a very subtle Willamette hop presence. 4.8% ABV @ Slackwater

Laughing Dog The Dogfather - Described as being  one of the biggest brews Laughing Dog makes. Weighing in at a hefty 11% percent, the Dogfather has 7 malts and 4 different hops giving it a complex flavor profile of roasted malts, bourbon and dark fruits. @ Slackwater

Laughing Dog Alpha Dog - Described as true hop bomb brewed plenty of Columbus and Mt Hood hops for a piney hop character. Premium Pale, Honey and Munich malt make this beer a little less malty but packing plenty of hop punch. 8.5% ABV @ Slackwater

Be sure to join me today on the Freakshow with Mick and Allen on KBER 101 around 3:40pm as we dissect New Beer Friday's offerings further.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 12/4/15

I made this meme for "New Beer Black Friday" that should have run last week. As I didn't have anything new last week and I was slacking on my meme making duties, your stuck with my out dated attempt. The beers however are not outdated.

Hoppers Blonde Patersbier - This new seasonal has all the traditional fruity Belgian Trappist yeast flavors and aromatics. Hopper's version is unfiltered and well hopped with Pacifica hops, giving it a pleasant aroma of wildflower a and tropical fruit. The grains used include oats for a smooth yeast textured mouth feel. The flavor starts off crisp citrus with a honey like sweetness, then finishes dry with a lingering complex flavor of mango, strawberry and rich malt. 4.0% ABV @ Hoppers

Boulevard/Cigar City Collaboration #5 Tropical Pale Ale - Tropical fruit and berries in the nose. The taste is nice and fruity as well. More berries with a bit of mango and tangerine. Finishes slightly woody. A great balance of malt and topic-esque fruitiness. Defiantly Worth your quatloos. 7.2% ABV @ Beerhive

Deschutes EHOP - The nose has a bit of anise and cocoa malt. The taste starts with a sage/tyne spice combo that blends nicely with the malts. The end has coffee and a bit chocolate. Finishes with lemon bitters. Interesting beer spiced beer. I'm a bit on the fence about it though. 8.0% ABV @ Beerhive

These Epic beers have technically been around, but have been reworked so their sorta-kinda new. Epic will be debuting them as a series tonight at a tap takeover at The Hogs Wallow. They are all 4% ABV

Epic Session IPA - A Mosaic and Simcoe hopped IPA that has powerful and juicy nose and nice citrusy body.

Epic Single-hop Golden Ale - Featuring Centennial hops that gives it floral and citrus qualities.

Epic Witbier - a spiced Wit. Typically made with coriander and orange peel.

Epic Orchard Raspberry Ale - Tart raspberries with some coriander spiciness from the yeast.

Kettle Soured IPA - Big lemony tartness, with equally large grapefruit peel bitterness.

 Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/1/15

Boulevard Love Child #5 - I haven't had a chance to try this one yet but it's composed of multiple vintages of a Flanders style sour red ale that has been resting in whiskey and wine barrels, stainless vessels and a foeder that held red wine in a former life. This release features soft lactic acidity punctuated with very slight acetic notes and a tart, fruity flavor. 8.2% ABV @ Beer Bar

Avenues Proper Avenues Annual Saison - It's described as having Pilsner malt, oats, raw barley and unrefined brown sugar, all combined with earthy European hops, and the peppery, fruity saison yeast make for a very complex beer. Unfiltered, raw and fresh with a healthy acidity from a sour fermentation and high level of carbonation make this traditional ale both refreshing and perfect for pairing with food. 4.0% ABV @Avenues Proper

Avenues Proper Sam Dogger Lager – (Zwickel) Helles Lager. Helles lagers are famed for their balance and drinkability. They are considered the lager style of Bavaria and Munich especially (If you go there and order “ein bier,” that’s what they’ll give you. The style is less bitter than its cousin the Pilsner, but still light in color. Crisp, with a slight pilsner malt sweetness to the body and just enough German Hallertauer hops to balance, notes of pear, cereal grains, and creamy lager yeast abound. “Zwickel” (which you may or may not use to describe), just means “unfiltered” and can connote some cloudiness. 4.0% ABV @Avenues Proper

Lagunitas Equinox Pale Oat Ale - Described as a creamy, pale oat ale hopped up with a huge charge of Equinox and Simcoe hops for a piney, eucalyptusy, cedary, sprucey, foresty blast. 8.0% ABV @ Slackwater Pizza

Ninkasi Maiden the Shade - It's described as a summer IPA. Big powerful combinations of many different kinds of hops give a big hop profile. We added flaked barley to the beer to make for the smooth body and lighter summer-style IPA.

For Firkin Friday at the Bayou, Uinta has Wyld Child: Salted Orange IPA. Sea Salt, dry hopped w/ Amarillo + Ahtanum & Seville Orange Zest.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 6/27/14

Had a lot of "research" to do last night. I do it for you my brothers and sisters in beer land. Here's some of the data I was able to collect for this weeks New beer Friday.

Squatters Hop Riot: Grapefruit hops in the nose. Quite a bitter citrus flavor, very smooth and a bit creamy with wheat and malt. Very drinkable. Not particularly complex but very decent Session IPA. 4.0% ABV @ Squatters

Bohemian Düsseldorfer Altbier:  pours a clear reddish brown with a moderate cap of beige head. The nose has strong toast with some medium caramel sweetness - hint of pine. The taste has strong malt up front with toasty crackers char and cocoa. Grassy and herbal hops pop in next with a hint of earthy cherry and biscuit in the finish. The flavor is complex and defiantly worth getting your hands on. 6.0% ABV @ Bohemian, Beerhive, Beer Bar, Liquor Stores next week.

Bohemian Export Lager: pours a clear golden hue with two fingers of thick soapy white foam. The nose is full of  biscuit and bread, some mild grassy/floral hops "punch-up" from behind. The taste starts off bready with some toasty malt as well. Hints of lemon and grassy alfalfa-like hops round out the end. It finishes dry, clean, and with a mild floral hops notes. 5.3% ABV
@ Bohemian, Beerhive, Beer Bar, Liquor Stores next week.

Boulevard Love Child # 4: I havn't had a chance to try this one yet, from what I understand it's a little different from Love Child #3. #4 is made by blending batches of beer, aged for between 11 months and 5 years in whiskey barrels (50%), wine foeders (15%), and stainless steel tanks (35%). The beer gets it's funk from Boulevard's Saison-Brett Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces yeast strains. 9.0% ABV @Beerhive

Firestone Walker Opel: Hazy or clear - depending on what part of the bottle you get. The nose is lemony with floral/herbal hop notes - light yeast ester as well. The taste starts with great lemon and tangerine flavors with awesome phenolic notes from the yeast. There's a vinous/herbal white grape flavor that comes next with some citrus rind hops. The end slightly pilsner-esque with some herbal/grassy notes. As Saisons go, this isn't quite textbook. As a damn fine summer beer it's off the charts! It has exceeded my high expectations. Firestone walker can do no wrong. 7.5% ABV @Beerhive

Uinta's 801 Pilsner hit shelves and taps much earlier than scheduled. It's pretty much everywhere by now. Go get 'em!

What did I miss?

Prost!

New Beer Friday 8/30/13

Beer wise, we're in a transion phase as far as beer goes. We're at the end end of the summer offerings and at the begining of the Autumn seasonals. Today on New Beer Friday we have some great examples of summer and fall beers, both local and national.

Sierra Nevada - Flipside Red IPA: This brand new offering from Sierra Nevada prominently features tropical fruit and citrus hop flavors from the use of whole-cone Citra, Simcoe, and Centennial hops. These hops are used both as finishing additions and in the Hop Torpedo, a proprietary Sierra Nevada device that captures more hop aroma and flavor, but not bitterness, during the fermentation process. The interplay of pale, caramel, and chocolate malts firmly roots Flipside Red IPA and supplies its rich color. With just the right gusto—6.2 percent ABV and 60 IBU—this seasonal beer is perfect for the final flash of summer. @Liquor Stores

Boulevard - Reverb Imperial Pilsner: Pours a clear sunny color, with a bright white finger of head. Aroma was biscuits and pilsner malt, crackers, grassy hop notes. Tastes of crackers, and biscuits, sweet malts, grassy hops and a fruity yeast note. Body has a creaminess to it, medium body, adequate carbonation, not too airy, not to slick. @Bayou - Select Liquor Stores

Avenues Proper & Restaurant & Publik House - Fever Pitch Summer Saison: This session-strength version of a traditional country beer from Belgium/France is brewed with rice and wheat malt in the mash for a very light crisp body.  Nelson Sauvin (NZ) and Hallertauer (German) hops in the boil as well as a dryhopping period with the Nelson Sauvin give the beer a balanced bitterness and a fruity, wine-like finish. A light straw color and hazy from the wheat and the dryhopping period, the beer is also brewed with Grains of Paradise in the boil which have a bright, peppery flavor accented by the dry, slightly funky saison yeast. @Avenues Proper

Hoppers - Helles Festbier: a Munich style helles lager made with German pale and Munich malts. Spalter Select and Saaz hops. Secret Agent and Brewmaster Donovan Steele is also offering this beer unfiltered in a cask conditioned firkin tonight only. the tapping is at Hoppers - 4pm. One beer - two ways - one night.

We try and get you today's Firkin offering in the comment section as soon as the info comes in.

Also, Congrats go out to Tiffany Steele, she is this week's AHA Homebrewer of the Week. She's brilliant!

Cheers!

New Beer/Firkin Friday 7/5/13

You can tell it's hot outside because all of our New Beer Friday beers are designed to quench!

Boulevard 80-Acre: The nose is full of lemon rind, grapefruit, and orange. The tastes is fresh with citrus, lemon, grapefruit and grape, moderately bitter, Not much for malt character, a hint of wheat. Finishes dry with faint pine. Definitely not your typical wheat beer. @ Liquor Stores

Zion Canyon 360 Ale: Don't have much info on this one. All I  know is that it's a light citrusy session ale. Anyone tried it yet? @ Zion Canyon Brewing

Zion North Rim Hefeweizen: Again, not much info, I'm thinking it's a wheat beer? Please help if you've had it! @ Zion Canyon Brewing

Budweiser 3.5: Apparently this version of Bud was made for the Swedish market, starting a few years ago.  It comes in at a whopping 3.5% ABV. Makes the local stuff (4%) look like malt liquor. I guess they figured, why not sell it in Utah & Oklahoma? they won't know the difference. @ Grocery/Convenience Stores

For Firkin Friday at the Bayou, RedRock 'be represent'n with an old school pale ale, infused with juniper, bitter orange peel, and if that doesn't peak your interest, it's dry hopped with simcoe hops. Yum!
tapping's are usually at 3pm.

Hoppy Beerday, Bryan!

Cheers!

New Beer Friday: 4/12/13

It's been a pretty bleak week for the local beer scene, but we've found a few new beers floating around out there to help get you weekend started off right.

Boulevard Brewing's Coffee Ale: Don't be fooled, this is not a stout or porter this beers base is might lighter, but it doesn't affect the overall body to much. The nose is freshly brewed coffee. The taste starts with sweet coffee & strong bitter chocolate notes. Toffee notes come next with some light herbal hops rounding out the back end. Finishes like a lightly sweetened Iced Coffee. It's 9.3% abv is very well hidden could be trouble if your not careful. @ Beerhive

Some people have reported seeing a 4% version of Henry Weinhard's Woodland Pass IPA. I havn't seen it or tried it. One reviewer described it as, "sweet with a wood taste and a strong tea flavor. Mildly grassy with a mild grapefruit flavor". If you've seen it, let us know where. @ Grocery?

If I've missed anything, please spread the "beer love"!

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 9/7/12

Last week Hoppers debuted their GABF entry into the Pro-Am competition. Dallas Barlow's Rated X   British Style Mild Ale was well received and had everyone looking forward to the next Pro-Am release.

On the heals of last week's debut, Epic Brewing is offering the Pro-Am version of Scott Hunt's award winning IPA 74 today. Hunt’s beer will be released under Epic’s Hopulent IPA brand label. Look at the “release information area” on the side of the bottle for "Pro-Am '12". Big congrats to Scott, can't wait to try it! @ Epic & "better beer bars".

Boulevard Brewing's Collaboration #3 -Stingo is in the market as well. The nose starts with nutty - dark malts, biscuit, toast, toffee and herbal hops. The taste starts with rich brown and dark malts, a little biscuit and toasty brown malts. Next comes nutty caramel and toffee, The end has a candy sugar like sweetness with a decent herbal/grassy bitterness; as well as a boozy smack.

Overall it's okay, but not great. It has the typical UK style malt/hop characteristics but it's quite boozy tasting. @ Beerhive & likely to select liquor stores.

Returning champions: Bristlecone Brown Ale from Uinta & Radius from Desert Edge Brewing.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 12/23/11

Let's begin with Epic's second new release this week, Utah Sage Saison. The taste starts out bitter and peppery right up front. Herbal notes of sage come next with a hint of Rosemary. Underneath it all There are light malts with that unique Saison funk. I think it could use a little more balance. The herbal/hoppy character tends to dominate for the most part. The timing for this beer is perfect. It has a holiday feel without the intention of being a holiday beer.

Next up is Boulevard Brewing's Bourbon Barrel Quad (B.B.Q). Tart cherries and a balanced bourbon flavor dominate up front, underneath there is more of what you'd expect from a quad - candi sugar, belgian yeast, and a big booziness. Hints of vanilla linger in the finish. Beautifully complex, this beer is a real joy to sip. It seems like the flavors that are present wouldn't work too well together but for some reason it comes together nicely.

Happy Holidays!

New Beer Friday 9/9/11

Today we have three new style bending beers that frankly defy categorization. And just in case you missed last nights post Uinta's Jacked Imperial Pumpkin should be on sale today at the brewery.

North Coast Grand Cru: Pours a rich golden color, with a large quickly dissipating head. The nose is of apple, pear, honey and vanilla. The tastes starts with pear, raisins and sweet caramel. Dark fruits come next with slight bourbon notes. The finish is boozy and phenolic. This is one sweet som' bitch and it's 12.9% abv is not something to take lightly. @ Beerhive.

Deschutes/Boulevard Collaboration No. 2 - White IPA: The nose is of lemon and grapefruit with notes of coriander, pepper and Belgian yeast. The taste starts with coriander and orange peel with hints of lemongrass. Next comes a malty spiness that transitions into a hoppy, bitter - west coast IPA finish. This is an anomaly. It's like a Saison and a Belgian IPA got drunk while listening to the Conan The Barbarian Soundtrack (Arnold) and had a kid. Yeah, I know!
@ Beerhive & Bayou.

Epic's Brainless on Cherries #5: This one is unique from the others because it was aged in red wine barrels instead of white wine. It's described as less sweet as the dryer red wine adds more tannin and tartness to round out the cherries and malty sweetness of the beer. Sound like the dryer #5 will be more complementary toward the fruit. Can't wait to try it. @ Epic

Better Late, than Never

Christmas may be gone, but as the title says, better late than never. Don't fret though - there's still New Years Eve.

We first told you about late comer, numero uno back in early October. This collaboration between Weihenstephan, one of the world's most important breweries and Samuel Adams has been eagerly awaited by many in Utah and it doesn't disappoint. Taste wise - that is.

The bottle presentation is beautiful. Poured from 750mL corked bottle. Infinium is quite dry with crispness o' plenty. Starts with bready hints along with some slightly ripened, vinous notes. Slight banana and some pear come next with apple and grape rounding out the middle. The finish is definitely very Champagne-like and dry. Mouthfeel is crisp and dry with a medium-light body. There is slight heat from the alcohol but the carbonation cuts-it a bit, just like it would in a sparkling wine.

Be prepared for some bottle shock, as Infinium will set you back a few Hamiltons. Available at the Bayou and soon to allocated liquor stores.

The next "tardy beer" is Anchor Brewing's Our Special Ale. This Holiday institution goes back all the way to 1983 and has had a different recipe every year. Some years have been better than others. I think this year is one of the good ones.

The nose is dry and roasted with some toffee, raisins, figs, caramel and fruit esters. The taste starts dry and bitter. Then the spices kicks in: They give way to notes of passion fruit, oranges, figs, root beer and a hint of chocolate. The finish is lightly dry with some roasted malt, dried fruits and mixed exotic spices. The 5.50% ABV is almost sessional. Wide release.

The last of the "hind tit" beers is Boulevard Brewing's Harvest Dance Wheat Wine. Yup, a Wheatwine. The Wheatwine is akin to a Barleywine in strength, but contains a large portion of wheat malt; upwards of 50%. The wheat provides a soft and fluffy mouthfeel.

This beer has a fruity nose with sweet malt notes. The flavor starts with a complex blend of sweet, bready malt, next comes vanilla, oak, and a slightly vinous backbone. Rounding slowly to a long, dry, oaky finish. The ABV is 9.10% and is served from 750mL corked bottle. At the Bayou and some allocated liquor stores.

These are all great choices to help ring in the New Year. If you find any of these at area liquor stores, please comment on where you found them.

Cheers!

The Beer Yogi is At It Again.

Just days after the last last of the Rêve went away RedRock's Beer Yogi, Kevin Templin has already began laying down next years batch to bed, in oak. That's cool, but not this cool.

But what really made my ears perk up was mention of the Double IPA that he's working on. What's going to make this one different from the others currently floating around the market is that this one is made with a Belgian yeast strain and is currently vacationing in oak, until it "want's to be done". So, when it's ready he'll tell me and I'll tell you.

Also in the works, Kevin is putting together an "amped up" version of RedRock's popular Harvest Ale. I love this beer, can't wait to see what he does with a bigger version of it.

New beers available to you this week are Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale from Boulevard Brewing's Smokestack series(Bayou).

Pike's Double IPA(Bayou,Beerhive).

The following beers should be available in liquor store within the next week or so.

PIKE NAUGHTY NELLIE GOLDEN ALE
DESCHUTES RESERVE SUPER JUBEL ALE'
MACTARNAHAN'S SUMMER GRIFTER IPA??? *NOT SURE*
SAMUEL ADAMS' COASTAL WHEAT

The Smokestack Series Comes to Utah

Last November Boulevard Brewing out of Kansas City, Missouri entered the Utah market with two of it's staples, their Unfiltered Wheat and their Lunar an American version of a Dunkel Weizen.

Now comes word that Boulevard's Smokestack Series is now on it's way.

The Smokestack Series features bold, complex beers with higher alcohol content, and
includes both traditional varieties and experimental brews. The first four releases consist of
Boulevard Saison, a “farmhouse” ale, Long Strange Tripel, a Trappist-style “abbey” beer, Double-Wide I.P.A., an India pale ale, and The Sixth Glass, a Belgian-style quadrupel ale.

The Bayou plans to introduce these ales to beer lovers in the coming months. The beers
are packaged in 750 ml champagne bottles with cork-and-cage closures. No word yet on the pricing. Cheers!

Boulevard's Unfiltered Wheat

Success! Beer has the mystical power to predict the outcome of sporting events.

Found 'em!... finally. At of all places 7-eleven. The store I was at only had the wheat beer, which is fine. At $8.50 a sixer I wasn't prepared for that kind of hit on the wallet for a new-to-me six-pack.

Poured a hazy straw yellow color with a small white head that dissipated quickly leaving light lacing on glass. The nose was of fresh grains, lemons, oranges and a little yeast. The taste started with Light bready malt and a light lemon zest. A bit of grassy hop bitterness is present in the end. The finish was slightly spicey. This is an average but good wheat beer that will appeal to a variety of tastes. But don't expect to be blown away. Cheers!

Lost on the Boulevard

First off let me preface today's "beer spewage" by saying "I can't find these beers!"However much as I'd like, I can't tell you anything about them. So, I need your help in tracking them down! Anyway, I have It under good authority ("AndytheJerk" & Carlson Distribution) that Boulevard Brewing Co. out of Kansas City, Missouri has entered the SLC market with two of it's six; year-round beers.

Founded in 1989, Boulevard Brewing Company has grown to become the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest.

Boulevard's American-style Wheat Beer and their Lunar unfiltered Brown Ale are said to be available at right now at Macey's Foods and Reams. I don't have either of these stores near my home, and the stores I have visited have turned up bupkis. I called Carlson Distribution, they assured me that they are available, but couldn't be specific about exactly which stores are carrying them. So please brothas & sistas help me help you. Cheers!
