New Beer Friday 7/26/24

Stuck in a rut, or have no place to go? New Beer Friday is coming to your rescue! We've found an orbital selection of fresh beer to help you feel weightless on this post Pie and Beer Day weekend.

Beer Nerd Radio has another of our Sensory Beer shows. The kick this week is that our guest’s tongues won't know what they’re having until we begin. Check out the chaos starting at 2pm today (Friday) on 99.9FM KUAA.

Roha - Brewers Select (In The Shade Cold IPA): Fermented cold like a pilsner then pounded with Elani, El Dorado, and Rakau hops give it a big blast of tropical fruit flavors with just a hint of sweet citrus zest. The super easy drinking and light body makes this hop bomb shine.

RoHa - Vanilla Porter: I'm not in dark beer mode right now. But when I see a vanilla stout or porter, I stop & ponder the situation. Pulling the trigger on this one I got a good amount of char from the base beer with vanilla that takes from espresso to cappuccino. Dry not sweet.

Saltfire - A Series of Singularities (Styrian Wolf): Big flowery aroma. Intense flavors of floral, tropical fruit and citrus notes. This is a high alpha acid beer so the flavors are all amped-up, but the bitterness is fairly restrained, but absolutely noticeable. WCIPA for sure with lingering bitterness.

TF/Melvin Collaboration (Ox Blood): It’s a very dark amber color with super toasty aroma. It looks quite malty but it’s more restrained flavor-wise. Light caramel with toasted bread starts it off. Great grassy/ herbal hop profile. The whole package is great & very true to style.

Ogden Beer/Melvin Collaboration (Monte Crispo): This West Coast Pilsner is definitely unfiltered and has a big citrus aroma. The hop bill consists of Cashmere, Vista and Eldorado hops. Love the hop profile more citrus with herbal hops and hint of peach/cantaloupe. excellent stuff one of my favorites of the Melvin Pie and Beer Day Taptakeovers.

Melvin - Double Dry Hopped Star Valley: Peachy aroma, love those Nectaron hops. Flavor starts the same with nice dank-ish peach forward hops. The body is light but the overall big flavor balances it out. Tasty sesh IPA. 5.0% Found at HandleBar.

Melvin - Huckleberry Pie: Missed this one. 5.0% Found at HandleBar.

Melvin - Double Dry Hopped Pils Boutique W/ Necaron: 5.0% Found at HandleBar.

Wiley Roots- Great Barrier Teefs: Love the can artwork. Beer looks great too, a nice clear amber hue. A hop bill of Mosaic, Riwaka & Wakatu hop offer flavors of caramel, berries, strawberry, melon and herbs. Low ABV makes this very crushable. 5.8% - Found at HandleBar.

Prairie - Struck By Lightning, Bit By Cobra: That’s a big-ass can for a big-ass beer (19.2 oz). There’s a lot happening here. Boozy with lotsa citrus and 100 IBUs. It’s basically a WC-TRIPA. I like it but it’s a bit much for a super tall boy can. 11.0% - Found at Handlebar.

New Beer Friday 7/19/24

The Microsoft outage this morning has created a chaotic morning to say the least. Here's a basic New Beer Friday rundown.

Beer Nerd Radio welcomes Waterpocket Distilling's Co-Owner/Head Distiller Allen Scott. See you at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Offset - Requiescant: This new "
Modern WC IPA" features Motueka, Nelson and Simcoe hops Bright berry and stonefruit notes with some melon and really sold resinous flavor. Dry, bitter, aromatic, and packed with flavor. Very drinkable for its 7% ABV.

Epic - Blueberry Cream AleGreat clarity & color: Orange & a tinge of red. Blueberry nose. Taste is all blueberry, there is some cream ale for sure, but this beer delivers what they’re selling🫐. If you’re going to pair a pie/dessert, Go Key Lime or a simple white cake. 🍰🍺😋 7.0% - Available at Epic, The Bayou and Slackwater.

Shades - Boysenberry PieHonestly… I don’t know boysenberry very well. Apparently they’re indigenous to this area (SaltLake). Anyway.. nice berry profile, seems like there’s a cheesecake thing happening, but I’ve been reassured there’s no “cream cheese.”Graham crckr & nilla too. 6.3% - Available at both Shades locations.

Shades - Pale International AleLight malt profile with noticeable amount of orangey hops. Nice pale. 5.0% - Available at Shades.

Don't forget to hit Double IPA Fest Tomorrow!

New Beer Friday 7/12/24

The perfect beer pairing for this week may be Air Conditioning! Basically everything I tried on my  New Beer Friday research day were excellent warm weather beers. Take advantage of them and along with some water or iced tea.

Beer Nerd Radio welcomes two beer missionaries to the radio pub. Elder Timothy Cantwell of Lauter Day Brewers and Elder Dwight Wilson of O-Town Hop Heads, join Steph and Mikey to talk about Homebrew culture in Utah. We're still at 99.9FM KUAA, Fridays at 2pm.

Uinta - It's Not Buffett: This Piña Colada sour features pineapple & coconut. It’s pretty simple, starts with pineapple that pairs pretty well with the sour base. It’s actually hard to tell where the pineapple starts & the sour beer ends. Coconut wraps it up w balanced sweetness

Fisher - L9 Liquid Courage: This west coast style pale ale packs a big hoppy aromatic nose with a clean, crisp, and moderately bitter finish. The trifecta of Strata, Galaxy, and Citra hops bring this one together. 5.0% - Available at Fisher.

Fisher - Common Hop Pale Ale: This West Coast Pale is hopped with the Nelson Sauvin. Look for notes of berry and melon and a slight bitter finish. 5.0% - Only at Fisher.

Fisher - Premiant Pilsner: Premiant hops add depth to this new Czech Pils. It has an aromatic punch of curry, pepper and jasmine. The palate has a tea-like and citrusy component of lemon and lime in a crushable light bodied lager. 5.0% - Only at Fisher.

Shades - Daaibooi Dunkelweizen: (pronounced: die-boo-ee) is made with Curaçao Orange Peel to produce a dark brown, chocolatey wheat beer with refreshing notes of sweet and bitter orange. The maltiness of this German-Style beer is complimented by just a hint of tropical paradise, which is why it's named after Playa Daaibooi of Curaçao. 5.0%

Salt Lake Brewing _ Hop Head Red: Born in 1997 at Squatters, this red ale has been re-imagined at SL Brewing with Citra and Mosaic hops. The malt bill is slightly toasty a malty. A perfect blend for an American style Red. 5.0% - Available at SL Brewing.

Wiley Roots Brewing -  Pilsner Italiano: Utz a matta u??? Big spicy/herbal nose with biscuit and toasty malts at first swig. Hops are huge, floral and herbal. Mikey Likey! 5.5% - Found at Handle Bar.

Revision - Chaotic Prince: The body and head retention is tight! Slight tropical aroma. This is damn tasty, so many ratings from my friends are lackluster, to me this is great trop bomb. All the fruits, with Citra, Mosaic and Amarillo hops that exude notes of tangerine, peach and a hint of pine. Excellent body and just enough bitterness for balance. My pals smoke too much. 😆🍻6.7% - Found at Handle Bar.

New Beer Friday 6/28/24

A slow day of beer research yesterday, which is fine. More time to catch-up with fellow beer nerds on a Thursday afternoon. I did find some new stuff at 2 Row Brewing though, along with some returning favorites. Happy New Beer Friday.

Beer Nerd Radio welcomes Nils Imboden of Top of Main fame. What is Top of Main? I guess you'll need to tune in to 99.9FM KUAA at 2pm or stream us at KUAAFM.ORG today to find out.

2 Row- Elderberry BlondeNice malty base for a blonde. The berry is subtle, but fruity & not overly tart. Drinks quite well & it’s perfect for a hot day.

2 Row- Artificial Intelligence: Designed by AI (with a little nudging from owner, Brian Coleman). This beer features Ekuanot, NewZilla, Citra and Galaxy hops. How did the AI do? Comes across as a WCIPA. Lotsa citrus, peach & cactus fruit. Medium bitter finish. Avail to go only - til Sat

Returning Favorites

Level Crossing Cosmic SaunterHas a hazed golden color with a tall puffy white head. Strong nose with  highly aromatic hops of grapefruit and citrus. Lesser scents of pine and wood plank. In other words it smells like you would expect a good IPA to smell. Tropical scents and the malt exists as a big scent of pineapple juice. Mild trace scents of dank herbs. The taste starts out dry and fruity with citrus peel on the tongue. This is backed by a low dose of resiny pine. Mildly bitter and quite herbal in the mouth, this does taste like they slipped some dank herbs to spice it up a little more. Tastes like it smells bit it isn't harsh at all. If you like the fruitiness of NEIPAs But need more bitternes from your ale this is the one. 8.0% - on sale today at Level Crossing.

TF - Imperial Mango GoseThis 11.2% Gose is pretty dangerous due to the heavy amounts of mango and the pleasant levels of tartness. This all hides the huge alcohol content. Very tasty stuff and you can buy it starting today. Only at TF Brewing.

Hopkins - Pine Mountain Pale Ale: This West Coast-Style

IPA is brewed withChinook, Simcoe, Cascade and Centennial hops – along with fresh hand-picked local spruce tips to accentuate the piney, earthy, and resinous hop profile with a nice firm bitterness on the finish where the spruce flavor is layered in. 5.0% - Only at Hopkins.
