New Beer Friday 12/6/24

Dark beers and pale ales seem to rules in this week's New Beer Friday. Krampus would absolutely approve! Speaking of Krampus: We're just hours past Krampus Day, also known as Krampusnacht. Beer Nerd Radio today welcomes the punisher of bad children, along with GSL's Angie Keeton and Saltfire's Ryan Miller for our holiday beer events show. Honestly, I have no idea of what to expect; which should make some interest radio. Hit us up at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA, or stream us at KUAAFM.org.

Bewilder - Lord of the Ryes: This rye stout actually came out last week, but I dropped the ball. Roasty with some spiced coffee aroma. Oh man that’s smoove! Creamy cocoa, with that Rye! Oh god, that rye! It adds that spicy malt character that’s got that melange thing going on. You’d almost think it was spiced. Finishes easy with a hint of chinook and char. 6.66% - Available at Bewilder.

RoHa - Bourbon Barrel Aged Red Ale: A lightly malty base combines with toasty oak to create a nice vanilla profile. Hints of whiskey comes next with some bright orange zest rounding it out. Nice oaky/whiskey session beer. 5.0% - Available at RoHa.

Saltfire - Huckleberry Blonde Ale: Straight-up classic American-style blonde ale with that easy going malt profile. Huckleberry is noticeable, but not overpowering which allows both malt and berry to shine. 5.0% - Available on draft at SaltFire.

Shades - Cravens Perch Porter: Very dark, deep chestnut brown appearance, which is also opaque. Easy, toasted grain and wood aroma with a hint of caramel and toffee, for the aroma. Moderate level of darkly roasted grain which lingers quite nicely, for the taste. Medium light body. 5.0% - Available at both Shades locations.

Uinta - Sour Stout: Found on Uinta's R&D handle. This ale has a roasty aroma, some dark cocoa too. That’s where the normal stout ends. First swig is full on lactic tartness - a big ass lemony blast. From there the roastiness kicks in. For the most part it’s a fight to the death between the tart and char flavors. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Uinta - Tayle's Pale Ale: Looks like a classic pale ale, plenty of amber hues. Very light aroma, not much there. Toasty caramel with a floral & piney hop profile very old school, almost like an English style pale. Drinks really well, with a light/medium bitter finish.  5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Salt Lake Brewing - Pond CrosserThis Euro malt pale ale combines with American hops (Strata and CTZ). Light toasty malt, not too sweet. Hops pop with tangerine & some herbal/earthy hops. Overall the name fits🇬🇧🍺🇺🇸. 5.0% - Available at SL Brewing.

Salt Lake Brewing - Funky Cold AdeenaThis SMaSH lager features Weyerman BoHo Pils malt and Adeena hops. Really tasty, kinda like German Pils & a Czech Pils had love child… errr … beer. Nice sweet/ toasty malt profile. The Adeena adds all the Nobel hop flavors you crave with a hint of zest. Great lager.  5.0% - Available at SL Brewing.

Hop Butcher For The World - Little Pizza Table: Missed this Citra, Simcoe & Nelson Sauvin-hopped India Pale Ale 6.5% - Found at Slackwater.

Hop Butcher For The World - Galaxy Bowl: Missed this Galaxy-Hopped Double India Pale Ale 7.5% - Found at Slackwater.

Brewery Ommegang - Everything Nice: Lightly dusted with spices of the season, Everything Nice is a warming, wintry Belgian-style blonde ale. This supremely cozy confection pairs perfectly with any traditional holiday treat. Note the flavors of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and white pepper as you sip next to the fireplace. We hope this fresh-baked offering brings warmth and light to you and yours. 9.0% - Found at Slackwater.

Brewery Ommegang - Everything Naughty: an imperial blonde stout; Everything Naughty. A stout that confuses the eyes and tantalizes the taste buds. Anticipate notes of roasted coffee and white chocolate complete with a brilliant golden hue. This rich stout is smooth and velvety with classic stout flavors. 9.5% - Found at Slackwater.

New Beer Black Friday 11/29/24

I've been Ill'n and have not had the constitution to do proper beer "research" for this year's New Beer Black Friday. Hope I didn't miss anything. What I have found is brilliant and worth checking out on this Utah Pint Day! Yup, don't forget that it's actually a whole weekend of beer enjoyment, while getting out there and  supporting our favorite breweries and brewpubs, hope to see you out there!

...And Steph and I WILL be seeing you after today's jammed packed Beer Nerd Radio. Today Steph will give you all the Utah Pint Day info, along with an interview with this year's artist, Chuck Barrett. It will also be a mystery beer sensory show, find out if guest tasters (and Beer Nerd Radio Supporters) Alex Workman and Kent Haynes really know their beers. we start today (Black Friday) at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Offset - PNW Pils: This is the first in a series of traditional lagers brewed with ingredients grown a little closer to home. The malt is a German barley variety called Steffi, the hops are a blend of HBC1134 and American Noble Cascade. 1134 is bred to mimic the classic European noble varieties but with much better drought tolerance. American Noble Cascade maintains the essence of Cascade but in a very low alpha form.

RoHa - Kolsch:  This Kolsch is rich with grains and malts. Along with sweetness and mild hops. Between the look and smell this is one inviting brew. The taste is Bold with flavors. You first pick up on the sweet grains and malts. Then a mild hop bitterness at the end. There is alot going on in this Kolsch. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a super nice balance to it. 5.0% - Only at RoHa.

Bell's - Christmas Ale: This traditional Scotch Ale is rich and malty with notes of caramel and dark fruits, Little to no hop profile the ends with a warm finish. Certain to make your Black Friday bright, or at least a bit more bearable. 7.5% - Found at Beerhive, Slackwater.

Talisman - Coffee Vanilla Porter: Look for a rich coffee forward base (provided by Daily Rise Coffee) that blends with cocoa notes from the porter base. The vanilla adds a soft roundness and implied sweetness. That creates an over delicious brew. 5.0% - Only at Talisman.

Wasatch & Squatters - Love Local Series (Back Abbey): This Belgian-Style Dubbel Ale has a deep red color. Aroma is clove with some copper a caramelized sugar. Taste is similar with creamy caramel and a good dose of spicy Belgo-yeast. Bubblegum and clove dominate upfront with caramel rounding it out. Hop profile is herbal and Balanced. 7.5% - This beer will debut at Squatters & Wasatch Taproom today, November 22nd starting at 3pm and lasting into the night. The Love Local beers are limited-releases, so once Back Abbey is gone it's gone forever.

Bewilder - Atta Boy Ingy: Using a fancy yeast blend from Escarpment labs called Elysium. The beer is named for the Utah Hockey Club’s Goalie, Connor Ingram. Great citrus and peach aroma. Taste follows with some melon and grassy/herbal hops. The yeast is fruity, throwing out some strawberry I believe. A wee bit of hop burn, but that’ll fade in a couple days. A really tasty small batch. Go Ingy! 5.0% - Available today at Bewilder.

New Beer Friday 11/15/24

Need to escape your captive surrounding? This week's New Beer Friday will give you the beer freedom you crave.

2 Row's Brian Coleman is back in the radio pub. What is 2Row 2.0 like now after it much anticipated exspandtion? Steph and Mikey will fill you all in, today at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA.

Offset - NZH-104: More diesel. That’s the best description I/we beer describers can give to some of these NZ hops. Melon too! Along with some nectarine & orange. I really love these hops, but they can cause some hop fatigue for dainty boys like me. The being said. Tasty stuff. 5.0% - Available at the source, found at the Bayou.

Uinta - White Bronco: This Juicy IPA has a nice mango and pineapple thing happening with these hops. Super fruity & juicy with zero bitterness. Quite nice. On the R&D tap. 5.0% - Available at the source..

Strap Tank - The Walrus: This is a traditional English Mild Ale. Look for a copper color with subtle orange hues and a creamy white/foamy head. It has a slightly heavier than medium body, but drinks super light. The taste, and aroma is nutty, bready, and biscuit forward with a subtle fruity component derived from the English yeast used. It's crushable and warming to the soul. 5.0% - Available at Strap Tank, Lehi.

Bewilder - Belgian Pale Ale: From the award winning recipe by home brewer, Dwight Howard. Generally I’m not a big fan of this style. Often too phenolic and yeast spicy. This is pretty nice. Low peppery/clove notes with an overall dry body. Well executed, it’s like they made it just for me.  - Found at the source on draft.

Bewilder - Lichtenhainer: From the award winning recipe by home brewer, Dwight Howard. Hint of smoke in the nose, barely noticeable. Taste starts with a very light lemony tartness that is clean with toasty grains. Finishes light & dry. F’n high drinkability. Would have destroyed a keg or two of this last summer. Still might. 5.0% - Found at the source on draft

RoHa - Dog Tags (Fourth Tour): Great hop blend this year. This IPA is features a great citrus profile that dominates the entire beer. Some floral qualities too, but this whole package is citrus driven, which jives in most IPA palates. Right?

Hopkins - Patch Work, Pale Ale with Veterans Hop Blend: Hopkins' rotating and ever-evolving pale ale features locally-grown and malted Solstice Malt’s pale and wheat. This version features Chinook and Veteran hop blend. Look for tropical fruit and pine aroma and flavor from this hop profile. 5.0% - Available at the source.

Saltfire - Mt Naomi - Cab Franc Pilsner: Hint of vine fruit in the nose. This is vine forward for sure, but it’s not sweet. The pils base is lite as expected, and it works well with the Cab Franc varietal. It’s not sweet, though if it was a bit drier this would be a crusher. 5.0% - Found at the source on draft.

SL Brewing - My Wiiiiives Nitro ESB: Say it the name like Borat would and the name will make more sense. Great malt profile: Caramel with bit of toast. Hops are mostly floral with a hint of pine. The nitro lets this Marris Otter ESB sing. No carbonic bitterness makes this sweet without being cloying. 5.0% - Found at the source on draft.

Red Rock - Dilly Dally: Big melon & peach hop profile starts it off. The malt profile is straight up west coast DIPA. Some citrus peel and light diesel round it out. Not getting much Mosaic, but overall it’s damn tasty. It’s a West Coast-ish DIPA. 7.9% - Found at all Red Rock locations

Heber Valley - Volution V6: The 6th iteration of this two-hop hazy focuses on Simcoe & Centennial hops. Made with American 2-Row, white wheat, and flaked oats. Tangerine, pine, and "dank" flavors and aromas. Full mouth feel. Hazy appearance. 6.8% - Found at the source in 16 ounce cans.

TF - Kölsch: TF's first ever Kölsch (believe it or not) debuts today at Noon. 5.0% - Only at TF.

TF - Black Lime Sumac Sour: Debuts today at Noon. 5.0% - Only at TF.

Desert Edge - Conspiracy: This new Imperial Stout has earthy and bitter hit up front, but nothing overwhelming. This becomes char, dark chocolate, and some coffee. Molasses and anise follow. The earthy notes return towards the end. The sip finishes bittersweet and this lingers into and through the aftertaste which is very much unsweetened chocolate. 9.6% - Available at Desert Edge.

Uinta - East Bench: Missed this new whiskey barrel-aged stout is part of Uinta's Barrel & Blend Series and was aged in barrels for six months. Epic - Milk StoutA Milk Stout for those that hate “milk stouts”. This heavily roasted stout has a dose of milk sugars to keep this from becoming overly ashy. It’s still on the dry-side for a milk stout, but sweet stouts aren’t my thing. A dry Espresso finish tops it off. 5.0%

Salt Lake Brewing - Lambert’s Holiday Nut Brown AleToasty and bready - mostly bread crust. Medium to light caramel. Much more English-style than American (less hoppy). a somewhat nutty finish. 5.0% - Available at SL Brewing.

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Old Fashioned): Whiskey and orange peel aroma. Taste starts with chocolate covered orange. It’s bright and citrusy. The overall mimic of the cocktail is pretty close. The whiskey/citrus combo rocks. The cherry gets a lil lost, overall a nice take of an Old Fashioned. 11.8%

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Cherry Bliss): Very cherry aroma. It’s very dark & maraschino-like. Tastes more like chocolate/cherry cordial. The cherry pretty much drives the whole beer. It tastes fresh & natural, but it IS the whole beer. 11.8%

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Black Gold): Ending light? Not me. You can always count on me to go sideways on a big session like this. Epic’s premium barrel selection BBB brings a non-boozy nose, full of cocoa/coffee. Whoa, simple cocoa, cofffee, whiskey with light char & no heat. Sublime. 114.7%

New Beer Friday 10/18 /24

There's a good mix of malty and hoppy this week, your palate will not get bored.

Beer Nerd Radio brings back the deep dive episodes with Revenge of the Fresh Hops. Guest's Mark Alston and Jeremy Mathews will lend their palates as we dissect a selection of this year's fresh hops. Check bus out today at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Epic - Caramel Apple: This ale was brewed with Caramel malt, apple and spices. It has a bright, vibrant, caramel-copper coloring with a filmy, foamy, low profile, off-white head. Aromas of roasted caramel sweet, tangy apple sweetness, and subtle earthy notes. Flavors are tangy sweet forward, with caramel and toffee notes, tart apple fruit, roasted notes, and sugary highlights. Although overly sweet, the beer is fairly balanced and very drinkable. Light, crisp body, with a roasted and richly sweet aftertaste. Crisp, clean finish.

Epic - No Hops For You!: Umm, should be called, “No IBUs For You”! This damn thing takes many of my favorite hops & turns it into a melange of fruit flavors. Can’t believe there’s no fruit here. Citrus, pineapple, peach, mango, melon & berries. Mikey Likey!

Fisher - KRCL Anniversary Ale: You get a whiff of something fruity mixed in with a bit of dryness. It's nothing overpowering, but it's there, giving off those island vibes. This brew's got a good balance of sweetness and bitterness. It's like taking a sip of summer, with hints of fruit flavor that make it real enjoyable. 5.0%

Level Crossing - Wet Little Suss: Oh my. Serious amount of grapefruit zest, piled on with botanical hops & a hint of pine. Brilliant fresh hop combo.

Top of Main - Marzen: Such a nice malt profile happening here. Caramel for sure, but lagering yeast keeps it out of cloying territory. The hops are noble, spicy & herbal in style, & tie the room together… like a nice rug. Excellent Märzen. 6.0%

Salt Lake Brewing - GALAGA: This SMASH (single malt, single hop) IPA features Galaxy hops and Gambrinus malt. Hence the name. 👾 This kinda comes across as an old school IPA. Lotsa citrus, florals & pine The Galaxy hops create a resinous effect that wonderfully coats the mouth

Offset - DAMP 24.03: This wet hop IPA is 3 of 5 in the DAMP Series. It features Centennial, Pink and HBC1019 and was fermented with Kolsch yeast. Oh my! The citrus here is witchcraft. Hard to believe that this damn beer has no juice in it. Definitely some berries and stone fruit too (and some hop burn). But holy shit; stuff like this puts Utah on the world map. 2-3 days this’ll be perfect. 6.0%

Level Crossing - Rising Hope (Juicy White Peach IPA): LC's annual IPA that's dedicated to raising money money for pediatric cancer research is back. Aroma of mostly peach. It's simple but so on point. Flavor starts out with grapefruit, fades into white peach, and then ends on a very nice malty herbal note. This is an enjoyable pale ale. Feel is creamy and huge. It just develops in your mouth, it doesn't thin out, and it doesn't back down. I love the added peach and it doesn't add much sweetness or overwhelm the style with fruitiness. It compliments the IPA very well. 5.0% - Available at both Level Crossing locations.

RoHa - Out of the Park: This new Hazy Pale Ale features Zappa, Comet, Idaho seven and Pomona yeast. It's mostly citrus driven with some herbal bite. Malts are on the toasty side. The yeast adds hints of strawberry. 5.0% - Available at RoHa.
