New Beer Friday 7/29/22

Sometimes interpretations don't always line up with reality. New Beer Friday always jives, no matter the beer.... except for classic Newcastle. I'll excommunicate your ass, if I hear you're pining for that one. 😉

Our guest on Beer Nerd Radio today is Colby Frazier of Fisher Brewing Co. We'll talk beer, history and Fisher's huge expansion in the Granary neighborhood. Hit us up at 99.9 KUAA at 2pm. If you have any questions for us, leave them on our Instagram or the Utah Beer Facebook page.

Heber Valley - Volution Series (Galaxy/Motueka): I love this hop combo – two of myabsolute favorite new wave hops. There's lots of stone fruit and grapefruit, with a solid grassiness on the finish. There's not really any of the lime flavor I usually associate with Motueka hops. There's not a ton of bitterness, just the aforementioned grassy finish. 6.8% - Only at Heber Valley.

Heber Valley - ÄŒerták-7: This Czech Pilsner I immediately get a sweet smelling grain aroma with a light spicy hop aroma. Up front and in the middle I taste very light bitter herb flavor with a touch of grain. The back end is slightly floral with a nice spicy hop character and a light bitter finish. The aftertaste is a light grain flavor with a touch of sweet honey. 5.0%

Red Rock - Fukifino: This beer has been in the works for a while and has one of the best names to boot. Nose is big citrus – mostly tangerine like, maybe some grapefruit and pineapple undertones, limited malt character, no booziness. Taste is similar with big citrus/tangerine taste, lighter grapefruit and pineapple and mixed tropicals, more malt than the aroma but zero hint at this being 9.5% abv - booziness hidden behind the citrus flavoring. Available starting today at all Red Rock locations.

Saltfire - Series of Singularities (ADHA218): Experimental hops are fun to play with, but they don't make great names for beer. Loaded with peach, melon, berries and grapefruit peel. There's a good smack of herbal hops in the back with a lingering bitter finish. 7.3% - Only at Saltfire.

TF - 210 IPA: Named for the state road that runs up Little Cottonwood Canyon, this IPA will be part of TF's regular line-up. It's a west coast style IPA that is deceptively dank. There's plenty of citrus peel, pine, herbs and tea. It's overall dry and it has a pleasant 6.2% ABV. It's a nice alternative to Ferda – if your looking for something a little lighter. Available at TF starting today.

Offset - Lunch Laps V2: (from Offset) The goal of this beer is to learn more about Thiols and how to maximize their presence in beer. Offset used the exact same thiolized yeast strain from Omega, exact same grain bill, and hopping regimen but cut the amount of Phantasm used in the whirlpool way back to see if Phantasm is actually contributing as much as it's advertised to. Turns out the malt and hop might be way more impactful than the Phantasm. 5.0% - small batch only at Offset.

Offset - NZ Pale Ale(from Offset) For this batch we diverted some wort from our Riwaka Pale ale into one of our little experimental fermenters. We blended am small amount of the same thiolized yeast we used for Lunch Laps in with our house ale yeast then dry hopped it with a new to us combo of Nectaron and Nelson at a slightly higher dry hopping rate than the Riwaka Pale. It explodes with tropical goodness. Chances are you'll see this combo from us in the near future. Try it next to the Riwaka Pale to learn more about how dry hopping can significantly change the flavor and aroma of a beer. 5.0% - small batch only at Offset.

Shades/Ice Hause - Hoochey Kuchen: Missed this sour ale was brewed with Blueberry, cinnamon, vanilla bean and graham crackers. 6.5% - Only at Shades and Ice Hause

Talisman - Pineapple Punch: Missed this one. This is a sour ale made with caramelized pineapple. Sounds delish! 5.0% - Only at Talisman on draft.

Hopkins - Raspberry GoseMissed this one. 5.0% - Only at Hopkins on draft.

Kiitos - Grapefruit G.O.A.TMissed this one. This is a version of Rimondo Pale Ale with grapefruit. 5.0% - Available at Kiitos on draft and in cans.

Proper - Hop vs Hop (Cascade/Chinook): Proper go classic with this one. Two hops that built craft beer in America. Debuts today at Noon. 8.2% - Only at Proper locations.

Pipeworks - CoconanajamaMissed this one. Described as as refreshing and tropically delicious ale is just bursting with notes of creamy coconut and sun ripened banana. 8.3% - Found at Slackwater.

Pipeworks - Cold Blooded Cryo Blood of The Unicorn: Missed this Cryo-hopped Red Ale. 6.0% -  Found at Slackwater and Beer Zombies.

Pipeworks - NvU vs. The Haze: Lots of dank, hoppy, tropical fruit on the nose. similar flavor profile with a lovely, hoppy bite to the finish. it’s got a little alcohol burn to it that i dig. it’s not exactly a sipper but it’s also not one to be chugged either. Full, smooth mouthfeel. nicely carbonated and toes the line of of west coast IPA and NE IPA. 8.0% - Found at Slackwater and Beer Zombies.

Upslope - Japanese LagerAroma is very light and fits the style with a light hop perfume and some light rice and malty notes. Flavor follows with a crisp lightly citrus and bitter hop bite then a clean malt flavor that follows. The finish is a relatively dry one with just a bit of bitterness lingering once the malt subsides. 4.9% - Look for it in grocery and c-stores.

Upslope - Mango Lime Sour: Missed this one. 4.5% - Look for it in grocery and c-stores.

Cheers!

New Beer/Brewery Friday 7/21/22

Not only will you be getting info on the newest beers throughout the state, you'll get the lowdown on some of the Pie and Beer Day celebrations happening this Sunday. Unlike some "pioneers" we celebrate our faux holiday on the proper day.

Last Friday, three minutes before we were to go on air, the power went out at KUAA. It was only out for a few minutes, but the damage was done and we lost a major transmitting component that killed the radio station for a good 24 hours. Beer Nerd Radio continues today with guest Marcio Buffalo (formerly of Shades Brewing), we'll talk with him about his new gig and of course KUAA's Pie and Beer celebration. check us out at 2pm. I'd like to thank Kevin Templin for coming out, and doing a brilliant show that no one got to hear. We'll get him rescheduled soon.

It's also New Brewery Friday! Logan, Utah's long awaited Prodigy Brewing Company has finally opened bring local craft suds to our brothers and sisters in Cache County. Welcome to the family!

Prodigy - Cached OutMissed this Hefeweizen. Described as a refreshing German-style wheat ale that is bubbly and lightly hopped with a fruity aroma and hints of banana and crisp apple on the palate. 5.0%

Prodigy - Rusty HoeMissed this Farmhouse ale. Described as a slightly dry & refreshing with a subtle but distinct Belgian yeast characteristic. Although the hops are detectable, they play a supporting role in this beer. 5.0%

Desert Edge - Fairway IPACitrus, pine and floral hops up front along with a lighter tropical undertone. Follows the nose. Starts off with the citrus and pine, followed by the tropical fruit and floral notes. Fairly bitter. Finishes with lingering citrus. 6.8% - Available at Desert Edge, The Bayou.

TF - Phaucet Phantasm: A bouquet of cantaloupe, pineapple, orange juice with a balanced grassy/dank bitterness. Taste has citrus pith with vague tropical fruitiness. The Phantasm must is mellow for the most part, but adds a nice vinious quality that is complimentary, but not overpowering. It’s very much a pale ale & not a fruit beer. 5.0% - Only on draft at TF.

TF - Incognito Citra Single Hop Phantasm Hazy IPA: This is NOT the Phaucet Phantasm. This is an entirely different beer. Differences are Saaz hops -Cryo Incognito & Citra. Much more subdued in regards to the Phantasm addition. It's more round and less vinous….. yet still vinous. 7.7% - Only at TF starting today.

Kiitos - Hefeweizen: Most breweries have a Hefe on opening day. Kiitos waited 5 years. Low esters with a ton of wheat and minimal banana. Towards the end of the glass, lemon really starts to shine. If you’re on the fence about German Hefes, this might be the one for you. 5.0% - Only at Kiitos.

Kiitos - AHH Pale AleMade with Zappa & Ahhroma hops. I’ve only had Zappa in sour beers & to my knowledge never had Ahhroma. This is very juicy & citrus forward. Slight herbal bite with medium bitterness. I’m gunna be drinking a lot of this. 5.0% - Only at Kiitos.

Bewilder - Vanilla Red Cream Ale (on Nitro)Velvety and malty with a nice dose of vanilla. Love the nitro. 5.0% - Only at Bewilder.

Bewilder - Czech Amber Lager: Lotsa toasty malt with a classic Euro hop smack. Nice and herbal. Finishes fairly dry. Quite tasty. 5.0%

Strap Tank - Philly POG: Featuring Passion Fruit, Orange Guava (POG) and fermented with tart building Philly yeast, this beer has a bright medley of fruit salad flavors with brisk lemony tartness backing it up. 5.0% - Available at Strap Tank and Slackwater.

E9 - Tacoma Brew: A filtered Kolsch-style ale that is light, clean, and delicious. Light maltiness, light fruity yeast phenolics, and light bitterness. 4.8% - Found at the Bayou.

These Lumerbeard Brewing beers are out of Spokane, and are new to the market. As of this writing, Slackwater is the only place I know of that has them.

New Beer Friday 7/15/22

Let New Beer Friday set the mood as you relax and find your groove with that special mix of brews and tunes (thanks Meista). Today at 2pm, we debut Beer Nerd Radio on 99.9 KUAA. If you've found your way here, I think you'll find our hour of beer nerding just the thing to ease you into your weekend.

One of the things that I love about having a live show, is the interactive nature of it. We'd love for you to participate in our Q&A segment towards the end of the show. Phones aren't really an option at this point, so we're going to go with questions via Instagram. If you're don't follow me on "the gram" we're @utahbeerblog. Today's guest will be Kevin Templin of TF Brewing. Feel free to shoot Kevin some questions about his universe or any broad craft beer interests you may have. See you at 2pm!

Grid City - Morita Chipotle, Tart Cherry Nitro Honey
Cream Ale: This nitro beer features raw Orange Blossom honey, Morita Chipotle Peppers, Montmorency Tart cherry juice concentrate. Looks great. Head disappeared uncharacteristically fast for a nitro brew. Probably due to those oily chipotles. Aroma is smokey and spicy.  Cherry flavor up front for sure, notable honey as well. The chilis take over from there and run the show. It’s pepper forward for sure, I’d say it’s 5.5 out of 10. Most of it seem to linger in my parched lips. Could probably dial back both the cherry & the chipotle a bit & this would be spot on. 4.7% - Only at Grid City.

Level Crossing -  Philly Sour Fruit Bat: This version of Fruit Bat features mango and peach and was fermented with Philly Sour yeast. It has tart mango and floral aromas with a slight pucker in the mouth. That gives way to flavors of juicy peach, ripe nectarine and mango. The finish is tart – like unripened stone fruit. 5.0% - Only at Level Crossing.

2 Row - Liquid Therapy: This new IPA features a cryo version of a hop that's currently known as HBC 586. A moderate amount of haze with a very nice and explosive tropical aroma. The taste has a blast of citrus. So much orange and grapefruit happening here. Some peach and mango notes round it out, but this beer is all about the citrus. You need to check this one out. 9.0% - Available at 2 Row, should be showing-up at your better craft beer pubs and restaurants.

Level Crossing - Fruit Bat Philly Sour: There's a moderate amount of sourness here, enough to mute the peach and mango that's featured in this beer. The fruit is there, but a little more balance would make this much more refreshing.

Hopkins - Solstice Lager: Brewed like an IPA and fermented like a lager. Locally grown and malted Solstice Malt pilsner, wheat, and flaked oats make the base of this beer; bittered with Warrior hops then dry-hopped with Cascade, Citra, and Mosaic hops. A tropical bouquet with a crisp, clean finish and firm bitterness bring East and West Coast IPAs together with a lager profile. 5.0% - Only at Hopkins.

Melvin - IBUs Are Dead: I couldn't disagree more with the name, but I get it. This is part of Melvin's ExperiMENTAL Series. International Bitterness Units were once the belle of the ball. Nowadays, IBUs have fallen out of favor (or flavor?), in the lupulin world. This "Cold IPA" has 0 IBUs. Flavors are juicy as you'd expect. Plenty of citrus and mango and pineapple make a delicious NEIPA. 7.0% - Found at Beerhive, Slackwater.

Revision - 4seasons of Mother Earth 2022: Missed this new IPA. 7.2% - Found at Beerhive, Slackwater.

Prairie - Tiny Esses: Missed this sour ale with fruit candy. 5.9% - Found at Slackwater.

Also this weekend Southern Utah Summer Beerfest will be happening at Policy Kings' brewery tomorrow (7/16). Sounds like a perfect way to beat the heat!

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 7/8/22

Headlines can often be misleading. New Beer Friday always offers the best beer news with questionable spelling and germmatical errors. 😉

Shades - Orange Papaya: This base beer here is the typical Shades Kviek driven sour. The tartness is medium/high and puckering. The orange aspect comes through quite well and is bright. The papaya is a bit more muted and gets a little lost behind the tart base beer. Still, it's a nice fruity beer that disappeared from glass fast. 6.5% - Limited amount, available now at both Shades location.

Offset - Glossy: This new IPA features Citra, Motueka and Cashmere hops and is all about maximizing hop expression in a more drinkable low ABV package. Glossy is designed to showcase the fruity side of Citra, by pairing it with smaller additions of Cashmere and Motueka. The results are big citrus flavors and aromas with tangerine, pithy grapefruit, bright lemon and lime zest. 5.0%

Offset - Extroversa: This sour features plum, peach, blackberry and raspberry. Instead of kettle souring they used this newly discovered wild yeast that ferments and sours at the same time. It adds a really interesting complex "wild" character akin to a more traditional long term sour fermentation. The fruits provide layers that change as the beer warms. Much more sour than previous batches. 5.0%

TF - Triple Fruited Imperial Mango Gose: The name seems to say it all in regards to this ale. Compared to the above mentioned Shades beer, this one has a tartness that is much more subtle and it's fruitiness is also huge. This comes across very much like a mimosa errr.... beermosa. my glass was half empty before I remembered that this is a 11.2% beer. Excellent stuff. Available starting today, only at TF.

Uinta - Pro Line Juicy IPA: This is release number 4/6. This IPA was brewed exclusively with hops from Roy Farms. Cashmere, el Dorado and Strata hops along with Star Party Yeast, create vibrant notes of pineapple, passionfruit and papaya during fermentation with intense tropical flavors from the hops. Wheat, oats and a touch of honey malt create the backbone. Nice unfiltered clarity, excellent amber color. Aroma is juicy as described with some herbal qualities in back. Citrus definitely leads-off with a good dose of caramel malt. The hops bounce around from orange to “little cuties”. Some herbal zip as well as it finishes with medium bitterness. Excellent West Coast Double. 8.2% - Releases tomorrow at Uinta's General Store and Brewhouse Pub.

Fisher - United Haze of America: Missed this new Hazy Pale Ale. 5.0% - Only at Fisher.

Slackwater's SLC location is officially up and serving. Slackwater's third location is definitely going to raise the beer selection game in Salt Lake. Congrats to Slackwater on their new Granary location.

New Beer Friday 7/1/22

Welcome to July and a New Beer Friday that is slammed with a ton of great options for what I hope is a long holiday weekend for you. Be safe out there.

Offset - Pale Lager: Their "Pils" ups the hops a bit this round. Offset's house lager yeast tends to emphasize malt character a bit more than hops so the hop bill has been increasing each batch. 5.0% - Available at Offset.

Offset - Divi: The newest iteration of Divi gets a few more tweaks with added an enzymes to amplify the citrus/tropical flavors and aromas as well as swapping out the Citra for El Dorado. 586/Idaho7 on the hot-side and 586, Galaxy, El Dorado in the Dry-hop. 5.0% - Available at Offset.

Offset - Enigmatic LIPAThe goal with this beer was to try to make

a beer that expressed flavor and aromas similar to red fruits/berries. Offset used

red fruit forward hops but we also fermented it with a Genetically Edited Belgian yeast strain know for producing a lot of red fruit like esters. We dry hopped it with a blend of Enigma and Cashmere. Look for notes of red currant/raspberry/white wine character while Cashmere offers up some lemon lime and strawberry jam like notes. 5.0% - Available at Offset.

Offset - Lunch Laps: This was made with Phantasm; an interesting new product made from dried Sauvignon Blanc grape skins, it contains insane amounts of thiols. The hops and yeast used in this beer are also thiol forward which create incredibly strong flavors and aromas of tropical fruit combined with very little malt or hop character. It's incredibly interesting and totally unique. 4.5% - Available at Offset.

Epic - Pineapple Creamsicle IPA: I was anticipating a sweet-AF IPA. What I got was definitely pineapple forward, but less lactose for sure. Hops are vague, but they hit the bitter receptors on the tongue easy enough. This is quite enjoyable; A guilty pleasure for sure. Be careful, the 8.5% ABV is barely detectable. Only at Epic.

Silver Reef - Day Drink Believer: I missed this Golden Bock style lager from Saint George. Look for a smooth malt forward and deceptively strong, ABV 6.8%

Saltfire Anniversary Lemonene Terpene Lager: This Terpene lager is one of the best kept secrets in SLC right now. It's not a Terpene hammer but the lemonene is spot-on & 100% crushable on a hot day like today. If you're not drinking this lager over the weekend, you're dead to me. Well, maybe strongly disappointed. 5.0% - Only on draft at Saltfire

Saltfire Anniversary Berrylicious Lager: Same lager recipe as above with the addition of cherry, raspberry and plum. All of the fruits are detectable, but it's the cherry that's most prominent. Quite tasty. 5.0% - Only on draft at Saltfire

Fisher - Matador: This rye pale is very nice with a good dose of malt and rye spiciness. The hops have the typical citrus drive. 5.0% - Only at Fisher.

Proper - East-Side Paradise: This rice lager Pours a very pale gold/yellow classic lager color with a thin white head. Smells slightly nutty, floral hops, honey, grains. Taste follows the nose, has a nice slightly bitter aftertaste. Light-bodied, crisp, clean and crushable! Very nice! 5.0% - Only at Proper starting today.

Bewilder - Feelin’ Loopy: This is a collaboration with Lauter Day Home Brewers own Franklin Aguayo. Franklin was the winner of the Lauter Day Brewers Homebrew competition. This NEIPA is made with Lupomax hops. This is a citrus delight. If I didn’t know better I’d say this was dosed with juice. It’s on the lighter-side for style and perfect. It’s a citrus & tropical dream with low malt sweetness, made with Citra and Bru 1 hops. If you want a crushable IPA for a long holiday weekend, this is one of your best options. 6/3% - Very limited production. Call before making the trip. A delay in recieving the labels may push back today's planned release.

Hopkins - Extraterrestrial Sacrament: This new version of this New England-style IPA is double dry-hopped with Veteran’s Blend: Idaho 7, Talus HBC 692, Sabro, Mosaic, and HBC 630 to provide a big aroma with a thick mouthfeel from locally-grown and malted Solstice Malt. Mild Malt and flaked oats makes for a hyper-dimensional spiritual experience. 5.0% - Only at Hopkins.

Mother Earth - Project X Fractured Reality: Missed this NEIPA that features El Dorado, Citra and Triumph hops. Found at Slackwater.

Revision - Social Fermentation: Missed this NEIPA. 6.5% - Found at the Bayou.

Cheers!
