New Beer Friday 4/30/21

On the last day of April we have a simple and diverse selection of pub ales with an American twist. You can't go wrong with any of this week's New Beer Friday options.

Level Crossing - Fruit Bat: This is their Belgian style blonde ale made with tangerine mango and passion fruit. It has a nose mostly of tangerine with some spicy yeast notes. The taste for the most part is a fruit salad of the three with the passion fruit showing up mostly at the end. Nice and refreshing. 5.0% - Only at Level Crossing.

Level Crossing - Mad Oats: This is the 'hazy' version of their In The Pines pale ale. Nice turbid looking peach color. This is full of oats giving it a silky feel that leaves no residue in the glass. Hops are very tropical and melon-like with Sabro cryo, Idaho 7, Columbus, Lotus, Citra and Citiva. 5.0% - Only at Level Crossing.

Squatters - Hoppy Joe: This pale ale features Strata, Simcoe and Mosaic hops. This is a citrus driven pale ale with some herbal bitterness in the finish. Just what you want from an American Pale Ale.  5.0% - Only at Squatters Downtown brewpub.

Squatters - Julius on Nitro: Made with Munich malts this beer features Strata hops with Mosaic in the dry hop. Citrus peel was also added to the beer to boost the citrus qualities. It all comes together nicely as the nitro gas really allows the hops and citrus to shine. A super smooth and crushable ale. 5.0% - Only at Squatters Downtown brewpub.

Squatters - Black Sunshine: This is a cascadian dark ale hopped with Simcoe and Mosaic. The beer has a good amount of roasted malt that comes off as cocoa. The hops add nice notes of citrus peel and hint of pine. A nice example of the style. 5.0% - Only at Squatters Downtown brewpub.

Salt Flats - Pink Boots Strawberry Basil Gose: German-style Sour brewed using Pink Boots Blend hops combined with pink Himalayan sea salt, coriander, and basil that gives the beer a subtle spice and saltiness. The beer is then infused with strawberry creating a taste that is mildly tart and spicy with a sweet strawberry aftertaste. 5.0% - Available on draft at the brewery taproom and the Garage Grill in Draper

What did I miss? Please share.

New Beer Friday 4/23/21

Epic - Armadillo Comet: This new Imperial west coast style IPA from Epic features Amarillo and Comet hops. Aroma is orange - almost sweet, hints of piney notes accompanying. A light toasty aroma underneath. Taste has the citrus rind (orange) biting up front, backed by some floral and orange juice flavors. The floral appears mostly as aroma that accompanies each swish in the mouth. There is sufficient malt presence, toasty bread, to provide the needed balance, but clearly the hops are the name of the game with this beer. The beer is not bitter for the first sip or two, but the bitterness builds with each successive drink to become a quite bitter beer. The aftertaste lingers for a long while. 9.5% - This doesn't hit shelves until Monday.

RoHa Steady Edge: A deep copper colored beer with an aroma of sweet, caramelized brown sugar. Floral hops give way to a pleasant alcohol while warmth brings out pinesap. Bitterness is high and contrasted by equally high sweetness. The flavors generally follow the nose with emphasis on the caramelized sugar that is just short of burnt. Warmth reveals dates, while a long finish has modest strength playing to the caramel and alcohol. The alcohol is as expected and just short of warm. The silky texture and full body allow fine carbonation to transition from prickly to creamy. Residual sugars are less than expected. 7.9%

Fisher - Angling for a Cure: This is a collaboration beer made with Jamie Burnham of Beer Nut/Kiitos/Ogden's Own fame. A portion of the proceeds of this beer will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a charity that is very dear to her. This red ale has a sturdy malty aroma with some spicy notes laying in the background. On the initial taste, one might discover this to be better than the average red. Notes of brown sugar, burnt malts, and a certain spiciness occupy the initial taste. From this point, the taste evolves into a dry malt aftertaste. In the overall scope, I like this one a great deal. 5.0% Only at Fisher begins this Saturday in cans and draft.

Fisher Sunny Haze:  Hoppy with a lot of pine. Some grapefruit and floral notes in the nose as well. Grapefruit is stronger than in the nose. Pine notes as well as vague citrus. Good stuff. 5.0% - Available at Fisher

Bewilder - In the Barrel and Bock: Primarily bourbon and toffee in the nose. There's a little bit of oak and dark fruit too. Taste follows the nose, with toffee upfront, followed by vanilla. Mild cherry and tobacco flavors follow. Dark fruit undertones. The flavor components here meld almost seamlessly. Some sherry-like booziness comes through towards the finish as this beer warms up. Really tasty stuff. 11.0% - This is a very limited release and is available starting today.

Roosters - Mulletbrau: This is a lager hopped with Cascade and made with flaked rice. This debuts Saturday.

Red Rock - 9 -2 -5: The Pink Boots hop blend continues in this new beer from Red Rock. This is a Belgian style golden ale made with fresh peaches oak spirals and was blended with a bit of kettle soured ale for a touch of tartness. 5.0% - Available at all red rock locations.

Uinta - Mountain Lady Dark Ale: This is Uinta's Pink Boots beer entry. I don't have any notes on this as it debuts today. In case you're curious, the Pink Boots blend this year consists of Cashmere, Ahtanum, Citra, Loral and Sabro hops. look for an earthy, herbal and zesty beer. 5.0% - Very limited batch.

Ogden River - Koala Express: Missed this. This is a dry-hopped pilsner made with a blend of New Zealand hops. 5.0% - Only at Ogden River.

Shades - Blueberry Blast SlurryTart blueberries and cranberries, lactic acid, and a mild lactic sweetness. This isn't overly sour, but it is quite acidic - mild vanilla here as well. Blueberry tart and dry on the finish. Tasty stuff. 5.0% - At Shades.

Hopkins -  Guava Godess: Brewed by the women of Hopkins Brewing Company, this fruited-IPA features locally grown and malted Solstice Pilsner malt and Pink Boots Hop Blend in the dry-hop. Light and refreshing with a beautiful balance of hops and fresh guava. 5.0%

Toasted Barrel - Summer Session IPA: Missed this one. 5.0% - At Toasted Barrel now.

TF - Hazy IPA 3: There's a new hazy IPA that's supposed to debut today. I have no notes on it.

TF - Northern Lights: This is TF's third terpene beer and it's based on terpenes that come from the Northern Lights varietal of cannabis. Terpenes are aromatic oils that color cannabis varieties with distinctive flavors like citrus, berry, mint, and pine. This series of beers are always dankity-dank-dank; on top of being a tasty IPA. This 7.6% beer is sold out to go, available to enjoy in house though.

Shades - Hazy Brah: This is a brand new Hazy IPA from Shades; the folks over there tell me that this stuff will be as chewy as a fresh nug. Shades beers are always extreme, I expect no less from this Galaxy and Mosaic forward IPA. This 7.0% - only at Shades.

Red Rock - Double White Rainbow: This RR's "double wide" version of their White Rainbow WIPA. Dialed up to 8.4%, this beer promises a "wallop" of hop intensity with a smack of chewy Belgian yeast spiciness. Available at All Red Rock locations today.

Hopkins -Not-Another-IPA: This New England-style is double dry-hopped with Citra, Mosaic, Centennial, and Cascade to give it a glorious aroma and flavor of tropical fruit, fresh-squeezed juice, orange peel and a touch of bitterness from Zeus hops. Hopkins used local Solstice Mild, red wheat, flaked rye and a touch of Aromatic Malt to give it a light malty backbone. 5.0% - only at Hopkins.

Brasserie del la Senne - Ouden Vat: This Belgian sour features lemon and sour cherry with hints of balsamic and light sweet caramel. Moderate earthy funky flavor. 6.7% - Found at Slackwater (Sandy).

New 420 Beers

You'd think on the day dedicated to cannabis there wouldn't be much going on beer-wise, but you'd be wrong. To help you get into the spirit of 420 on 4/20 a few local breweries have concocted some ales that will mimic the dank flavors of hippy lettuce with no THC.

This 7.6% beer debuts today at Noon at TF Brewing.

Shades - Hazy Brah: This is a brand new Hazy IPA from Shades; the folks over there tell me that this stuff will be as chewy as a fresh nug. Shades beers are always extreme, I expect no less from this Galaxy and Mosaic forward IPA. This 7.0% beer debuts today at Noon - only at Shades.

Red Rock - Double White Rainbow: This RR's "double wide" version of their White Rainbow WIPA. Dialed up to 8.4%, this beer promises a "wallop" of hop intensity with a smack of chewy Belgian yeast spiciness. Available at All Red Rock locations starting today.

New Beer Friday 4/9/21

Epic - Tart n Hazy: This is a foeder (oak aged) soured blended IPA. Funky nose offers up some citrus along with a hint of softer fruit (like peach). Medium bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel. Finish is crisp and dry. 7.0% - Available at Epic starting today.

New Beer Friday 4/2/21

Spring is in the air and this week's beer selections are a fine example of that. If fruit is your literal jam, this will be a good weekend for you. Happy New Beer Friday

Ogden River - Injector: This is OGR's first high point offering and it comes out today! This will be a hazy style IPA and it will come in at 7.8% ABV. Super limited quantities available for this one. Only at Ogden River.

Grid City - Nitro Apricot Whole Flower Dry Hopped Pale Ale: Nobody can accuse the Grid City gang for being vague in their beer naming process. I am officially dubbing Head Brewer, Jeremy Gross the "Nitro Maestro" because he's hit another nitro beer out of the park. This is their classic pale ale with light tart apricot and a good dose of citrusy hops. Very nice stuff. 5.0% - Only at Grid City.

Kiitos - Strawberry Milkshake: It has a nice purple hue with a simple aroma of strawberry. Taste-wise it's much of the same with lightly tart strawberry and medium to light lactose sweetness. A wee bit jammy which is fine considering what it is. Not vegan friendly. 5.0% - Available at Kiitos.

Epic - Big Bad Baptist Reserve 2021: The Reserve is a blend of the choicest barrels of this year’s original version of Big Bad Baptist, plus beer from the best barrels from all of the Big Bad Baptist variants. It will be released this morning when the brewery opens. I hope to have some tasting notes later today. Keep an eye out on our social media. Only at Epic, soon to DABC.

Desert Edge - West Coast IPAThe nose is hoppy, malty, with a pretty nice citrus blend of orange, tangerine and grapefruit with some guava and mango mixed in. The taste is pretty nice, hoppy, malty, with a pretty nice citrus salad of tangerine, grapefruit and mango with some nice pineyness rounding out the back end. Medium body, ABV hidden pretty nicely, with a nice dry/bitter finish. Overall, a pretty tasty brew. 7.0% - Only at Desert Edge, Now in 16 ounce cans.

Wasatch - Strawberry Blonde AleBig aroma up front of unripe strawberries pops right away. Plenty of tartness, with a touch of sweetness. Some creamy malt character is picked up but this aroma is all about the strawberries. A round taste of strawberry sweetness hits first. A touch of tartness shows up mid body with continuing waves of well balanced sweetness. The blonde ale accents actually show up here with creamy bready malts on the back end. Finish is light sweetness. 5.0% Available at all Wasatch locations.

Strap Tank - Odin's Pale Ale: This is a Norwegian Style Pale Ale that I sadly missed. 5.0%

Strap Tank - Bunk Off: This is an Irish Red Ale that I'm also embarrassed to have missed. 5.0%

Shades - Hazy Brah!: Pours a hazy golden amber, peach coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and juicy tropical notes of mango, papaya and guava, with hints of citrus and grassy dankness as well. Taste is great balance of light biscuity malt, juicy tropical notes of mango, papaya and guava, lighter citrus notes of grapefruit and lime peel and hints of grassy dankness. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some tropical, dank notes lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. 7.0% - Only at Shades.

Cascade - Framblanc: This sour ale is made with 3,500 pounds golden raspberries and is a blend of sour blond ales aged for up to 14 months in oak wine barrels with fresh flavors of raspberries, green grapes, peaches and pears. 7.6% Found at Slackwater in Sandy

Cascade - Pear Mary: This pours a slightly hazy golden color with acidic pear and notes of vinegar, ginger and oaky pine. The taste starts pear forward with the ginger and pine bursting; vinous white wine elements emerge, in the middle, with the oak picking up the rear. 7.1% Found at Slackwater in Sandy

Modern Time - Fruitlands Strawberry Limeade: This has a clean lactic twang with natural strawberry and lime flavors. These flavors work well together and nearly neutralize the sodium snap from the Gose base beer. This will make it a perfect pool beer. 4.8% Found at Slackwater in Sandy.

Jolly Pumpkin - I thought I Was Special: This is listed as "retired", the last release was in 2019, so if you want to get a sip of this Wild Hazy IPA you'd better hit Slackwater in Sandy soon. I missed this, but I sure want to try it! 9.0%

Revision/Kohola - Owyhee: hazy golden yellow with heavy tropical fruits and stone fruits in the nose.   Pineapple starts off with some mango and papaya. The hop bitterness presence is minimal, but this is the epitome of a juicy NEIPA. Soft and smooth. Not as creamy as other offerings but it's one of the juiciest NEIPAs Revision/Kohola has made.

Cheers!
