New Beer Friday 5/27/22

Traveling this weekend? Bring your patience along with some local ciders, meads and even beer. You can definitely tell that summer has arrived by the flavors we found this week.

Desert Edge - Pink Moon: Another new can from one of SLC's oldest brewpubs. This unfiltered West Coast IPA has sweet orange, grapefruit, maybe with a touch of lemon and a smidge of tangerine. However, resinous piney and dank hops come a little over the top, while a sweet barley base holds up beneath the complexity. 7.4% - Available at Desert Edge and the Bayou.

Offset - Nelson Single Hop IPA: Not only does this baby feature some of the best Nelson in the world from but also uses a brand new product that is basically concentrated hop pellets. These pellets pack twice the punch of standard pellets This is a pure expression of everything Nelson has to offer. Look for grapefruit, white wine, gooseberry, passion fruit, diesel, cannabis flavors and aromas. 6.5% - Available at Offset, The Bayou.

Talisman - Bear Paw Blackberry Sour: Missed this one. Look for lemony lactic tartness and sweet berries to mellow it out. 5.0% - Only at Talisman.

Bewilder - Bronze Burro: Looks like bright polished bronze. The nose was a bit confusing, definitely got lime, but I couldn’t nail down the other components. Turns out to be Ginger. First swig was a blast of Lemon and lime; next come the spicy ginger component. At first the ginger comes across as sweet cherry and cinnamon, once the tastebuds adjust to the tartness the ginger flavor becomes more pronounced. Finish tart & dry with lingering lime zest. No hint of the 6.0% ABV. Only in cans at Bewilder.

Revision - Glitter Moon: Dominated by Vic Secret and Galaxy hops; this hazy smells of pineapple, grapefruit, orange and mango with malt and vanilla. Taste follows and the higher ABV was definitely well hidden. 8.5% - Found at Slackwater.

Revision - Through the Veil:This is a modern West Coast-style Triple IPA that bridges the flavor realities of two IPA styles. With big juicy notes of ripe pineapple, mango, and candied citrus with a hint of pine and resin from a massive dry hop of Kohatu, CRYO Mosaic, and Citra, these flavors are further elevated by a clean malt bill of two-row, pilsner, and wheat. 10.5% Found at Slackwater.

Firestone Walker - Gold Rider: This is like a fortified barleywine that has a fairly clear dark amber color with a small white head. A toffee aroma with lemon, cognac, vanilla, some oak, touch of oranges, hints of dark fruits. This beer is not sour. The lemon, and orange bitter create a zesty tartness. The added lemon juice to throw it out if balance and adds an odd cocktail feel. This is a sipper at 11.0% - Found at Slackwater.

Rogue - Gumberoo: Another citrus forward IPA for you. It has a nice amount of citrus and a good strong bitterness. The orange character dominates, so for those looking for something focused on orange-like hops this would be a good one to try out. 6.80% - Found at the Bayou.

Oskar Blues - Western Mutant: This West Coast style IPA features Nelson Sauvin and Simcoe leading the way with mango, white wine, and slight resinous pine. All of this harmonized with two German varieties as well: Akoya and Saphir hops, push the floral notes to the brim. 7.0% - Found at the Bayou.

Ciders/Mead

Mountain West - Little Orchard Series (Colada Be Kidding Me): Medium tart apples along with pineapple and coconut create a well balanced take on the tropical cocktail. 6.0% Limited amount available to-go in growlers or enjoy at Mountain West Hard Cider.

Scion/Etta Place - Azacca Hop Cider: This collaboration cider is  made with Azacca hops & saison yeast. Tannic & dry not as sweet as you might think. Hints of rack spices & heirloom apples explode. The finish has an almost an overripe (apple) graininess. 8.0% only available at Scion (on draft) & Etta Place.

Etta Place - Fig Mead: Holy shit! This tastes like fig newtons and fortified wine. I anticipated a sugar bomb, but this is so balanced and rich tasting. Alcohol is fairly subdued which creates high drinkability. If you're looking to experiment with mead this would be a good jumping off point. 14.0% - Found at Scion Cider Bar.

Highpoint Cider - Tram Line: This Mosaic dry-hopped cider is actually quite nice. The Hops really pop in a cider that has medium/low sweetness and a hop profile beer lovers want. 6.0% - Found at Scion Cider Bar.

Highpoint Cider - Transplant: A traditional semi-dry modern New England style cider. The Transplant is a smooth, slightly cloudy, and unfiltered. 6.0% - Found at Scion Cider Bar.

Highpoint Cider - Spur: A session cider, infused with ginger, quickly gives a kick while maintaining a clean, crisp finish. 6.0% - Found at Scion Cider Bar.

Cheers!

American Craft Beer Week Friday 5/20

Typically we'd be doing New Beer Friday today. But, let's face it, this whole week has been day after day of new beer, so we'll continue on with the theme and insert some of the other new beers we've found. Today we have some new beers and plenty of other American Craft Beer Week events and specials. Feel free to visit our past posts from earlier in the week to check out some of this week's other new beers. Have an excellent weekend!

Epic Brewing - Release of Big Bad Baptist. Reserve 2022: This year's special blend has a nose that is at dessert levels of rich, roasted malts, milk chocolate, a touch of vanilla and molasses. Taste matches up, with additional bourbon barrel sweetness, coffee, light vanilla, and a balancing hint of bitterness. Feels is super chewy, with medium thickness and a lasting aftertaste. Overall another great entry into the Big Bad Baptist lineup.

TF Brewing - You’re Too Shallow: This is an IPA features Idaho 7, Strata and Citra hops. Kevin Templin simply refers to this as an "American IPA". As it debuts today, we'll let you decide which camp you think it belongs. Proceeds from beer sales will go to Friends of GSL. 6.8% - Only at TF.

Red Rock - Nanu Nanu: People of a certain age with no doubt get the name of this new IPA from Red Rock. Chill hazed golden colored ale with a tall puffy white head. Strong with the hops and highly aromatic. Smells strongly of grapefruit and citrus. Lesser scents of pine and pine board. In other words it smells like you would expect a good IPA to smell. Tropical scents and the malt exists as a big scent of pineapple juice. Starts out dry and fruity citrus on the tongue backed by a pine tongue depressor taste. Mildly bitter and quite herbal in the mouth. A very nice DIPA that straddles the line of East and West Coast IPAs. 8.1% - Available at all Red Rock locations.

RoHa Brewing Project - Food and Beer Pairing with Toritos Tacos: 6pm, buy tickets in advance (almost sold out): https://roha-brewing-project.square.site/product/tasting-series-may-20th-toritos-tacos/163?cs=true&cst=custom

Shades Brewing - Collaboration day: Raspberry lager brewed in collaboration with Proximity Malt. This beer is a pilsner fermented with raspberries and lagered for 4 weeks. Amazing, fruity, crispy, dry. 5.0% - Available at both Shades locations.

Level Crossing - Northfarthing: This Nitro English Pub Ale has aromas of biscuit malt, caramel and light honey. Served on nitrogen, this pub ale has a light, yet creamy body with low hop bitterness and flavors of lightly toasted bread pudding. Northfarthing has a smooth and clean nitrogen finish. 5.0% - Only at Level Crossing.

West Side Tavern Firkin: Pineapple Habanero Hefeweizen.

Vendor: Brewer's Bread (pop up from 4-7pm)

Illuminated Brew Works - The Proper Glassware is an Empty Head: Missed this Double Dry Hopped Double IPA. It's Dry Hopped with 4 pounds per barrel. A  blend of Citra, Mosaic, Waimea, Sabro, and Vic’s Secret. 8.0% - Found at DABC.

New Beer Friday the 13th 5/13/22

"This New Beer Friday really ties the room together"... Don't you think?

Hopkins - Trifecta StoutThis American stout features three of the most loved dark beer adjuncts; coffee, chocolate, and flaked oat. Featuring a heavy coffee aroma with a balanced blend of chocolate and roasted malt character, all tied with a thick mouthfeel. Brewed with cold-brewed coffee provided by The Bean Whole. 5.0% - only at Hopkins.

Uinta - Watermelon Sour: This new sour features Philly Sour yeast. Nice unfiltered peach color. Gave it a hard pour, but very little head retention. Smells like vague sour tree fruit & lemon. To starts much the same with unripened peach and golden berries. The watermelon takes a backseat to the tartness from the Philly Sour Yeast. Once your palate adjusts to the tartness the watermelon becomes more apparent. 7.0% - Available at Uinta starting today.

Silver Reef - Down Winder: Missed this new West Coast IPA from Southern Utah's largest craft brewer. Look for heavy citrus and floral notes. 7.0% - available at Silver Reef Brewing.

Offset - Dopo (Nelson Savin):Tropical Haze: Nice hazed/unfiltered apricot color. Nice citrus, melon and berry profile. All of key favorites are present. The malt come across as wheaty, but there's no wheat malt added here. It finishes with medium to low bitterness, which adds to its drinkability. 5.0% - Available at Offset Bier and on draft at the Bayou.

Kiitos - Tropical Haze: This IPA features mango and guava. It’s extremely hazy, almost milky in appearance. The aroma has a hint of sweetness, with some tropical hops. Very earthy and herbal to begin with on the taste. The tropical fruits are there, but they definitely take a backseat to the hops. More to the point: the finish is like chewing on a hop cone, less the bitterness. 5.0% - Available on draft at Kiitos.

Shades - Sounds Gay, I'm In: This beer is an American sour ale brewed with prickly pear flavors. It lightly tart base lets the prickly pear do most of the heavy lifting. creating a tart and fruity beer that's very crushable. Made self proclaimed queer brewer and my Pal, Tanya Sapula. 6.5% - Available at Shades Brewing.

Allagash - White: One of my all-time favorite witbiers finally comes to Utah! Hints of clove spice and more prominent citrus notes over wheaty and cookie-dough malt. The flavor is a bit more intense than the nose, but still moderate for the style: bitterish, tangy citrus with hints of spice, a modest yeast presence and what seem to be faint Noble hop notes on the end- all over a prominent, cleanish wheat backbone. The finish is pretty clean, with a hint of wheat and spice remaining, and is very crisp followed by a slight citrus bitterness that lingers for a few minutes. 5.2% - Found at Slackwater.

Cascade - Pêche Fumé: This is a collaboration with Germany's Freigeist Bierkulturis. It's a wild, sour wheat ale brewed with smoked malt then fermented in open-top puncheon barrels with Northwest-grown peaches. 7.2% - Found at Slackwater.

Cascade - Ruby Lime: Look for a sour wheat ale aged in oak barrels and foudres for up to 10 months with late infusions of hibiscus tea and lime leaves. Pouring a deep ruby hue, this mild and refreshing sour ale captures notes of pomegranate and cranberry from the hibiscus tea complemented by the lime leaves’ sweet citrus and floral aromas. 5.5% - Found at Slackwater.

Offshoot - Coast Pale Ale: Missed this one. Look for typical haze with juicy, fruity flavor thanks to generous dry hopping with Mosaic, Strata, Citra, and Cashmere. 5.2% - Found at Slackwater.

Denver Beer Co. - Tart Delight: Missed this Lime sour. 5.0% - Found at Slackwater.

Bombastic - Puddle: Missed this Citra pale ale. 5.0% - Found at Maverik Stores in Weber and Davis County. Very Limited.

Revision - Leafy Greens: This one is dry and dank with lots of CTZ hops. The whole enchilada comes across as chewy, with an ABV of 7.2 keeping everything in check. Found at the Bayou and Slackwater.

Revision - 87 Knots: Not sure where my loyalties lie concerning this one. Between the cryo Mosaic, Motueka and Kashmir hops, this is a wonderful, leafy hop salad. Heavy on the citrus peel with some minor tropical flavors. 6.7% - found at the Bayou and Slackwater.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/6/22

If this week was a epic cinematic masterpiece, consider New Beer Friday to be the intermission for that Lawrence of the Arabia-esque flick. The concession stand has an excellent assortment of cold snacks to get you across the finish line to those coveted post-credit scenes that are the weekend.

Bohemian - Nala’s Lager: From the mind of Chaz Smith come 2021’s winner of Lagerpalooza: Utah’s only lager home-brew competition. This special pale lager was brewed utilizing unmalted rye, wheat, spalt and barley. The lager also features honey and Laurel hops. I need a stein of this! See you At Lagerpalooza tomorrow (5/7)! Oh, congrats Chaz!!!

Offset - Nectaron: This single hop pale ale showcases another new New Zealand hop. Peach in color, not really hazy, more unfiltered in appearance. This new hop is called Nectaron. The aroma in this one exploded with Passion Fruit, White Peach, and Pineapple. The taste follows with the addition of lime and grapefruit coming along toward the end. Bitterness is medium/low. 5.0% - Available (for now) at Offset Bier.

Bewilder - Chick Flip: Even without looking at the label, you can tell that this is a West Coast double IPA. Great clarity in color with decent retention. The aroma is incredible; Spent way too long just hovering over it. This year‘s pink boots blend doesn’t disappoint. Lots of orange and bitter grapefruit peel along with some mango and herbal teas. The finish Is long and bitter with 90 IBUs punching you in the tongue. Great stuff!

Offshoot - Secret: This west coast double IPA pours a bright, clear orange color with was made with copious amounts of Citra, Mosaic, and Cashmere hops, imparting aromas and flavors of bright citrus, mango, and soft melon. fresh, clean, and crisp. 8.1% - Found at Slackwater.

Squatters - El Cobre: Really toasty nose. Taste is similar, more toasted grain and cereal. This one isn’t super hoppy but I like what’s happening with this one. Kinda reminds me of a English mild that’s been lagered, minus the English hops. Excellent stuff!

The Bruery - Ruekeller Dunkel: Aroma of dark caramel malts. Very bready, like with pumpernickel and hints of toffee. Some dark chocolate and dark fruits as well. 6.3% - Found at Slackwater.

Hess - Eazy Drankin': Missed this one. It's described as a summer Honey Ale that's light and crisp,  brewed with 2-row barley, white wheat, and a splash of caramel malts. Each batch is brewed with 60 lbs of Orange Blossom Honey so it has a big honey aroma and flavor. Mild bitterness. 5.7% - Found at Slackwater.

Revision/Moonraker - 87 Knots: Pours on the darker-side of orange with a hazy body. Notes of Mango, passionfruit, lime and dank hops. This crusher is loaded with Mosaic Cryo, Motueka and Cashmere hops. Full of tropical fruit, grapefruit, mango, and hop oil. Damn Tasty. 6.7% - Found at Angry Goat.

Bootstrap - Chillax Pineapple Gold: Aroma of pineapple and popcorn. Taste starts sweet with malt, the pineapple adds some tartness. Not much in the way of hops. A little on the sweet side for me, but I can see many crushing this. 4.5% - Found at Angry Goat.

Here are this Week's Small Batch Beer from Hopkins

Cheers!
