New Beer Friday 4/28/22

There's a huge amount of new beers this week. The Bayou received a cargo ship full of beer yesterday that is definitely worth checking out.

SaltFire - Series of Singularities (Strata Hops)This beer pours a dull gold with a moderate head. The aroma is unusual, with a combo of berry and stonefruit notes and an undercurrent of cannabis, black tea, and cranberry. The flavor is super juicy upfront, with strawberry, rose wine, cranberry, raspberry, white grape, cannabis, fruit loops, and a solid amount of bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall this is a really excellent beer - utterly unique in my experience of hop flavors, with a tasty based and solid bitterness.

Hopkins - The Hunter: This Kolsch is rich with grains and malts. Along with sweetness and mild hops. Between the look and smell this is one inviting brew. The taste is Bold with flavors. You first pick up on the sweet grains and malts. Then a mild hop bitterness at the end. There is alot going on in this Kolsch. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a super nice balance to it. 5.0% - Only at Hopkins.

Hopkins - Apricot Wheat: This American wheat brewed with apricot showcases the fruit’s heavy aroma, although the aroma is powerful, the apricot delicately balances between tons of malt bread notes, and rounded out with a thick mouthfeel. Brewed with 100% local malt from Solstice Malt.

TF - The After Party: Made with Nelson Sauvin, Sabro and Ekuanot hops. Has a hazy appearance for sure with a nice citrus and stone fruit aroma. The flavor starts the the same with nice citrus peel and some dull berry qualities. Some melon and herbal flavors come next. the overall malt profile and finish is on the dry-side. 5.0% - Only on draft at TF.

Red Rock - Ginger Gose: Missed this one. 5.0% - Available at all Red Rock locations.

Red Rock - Viva la Hatu: Missed this Mexican Lager. 5.0% - Available at all Red Rock locations.

Aecht Schlenkerla - Weizen RauchbierAroma is smoke, smoked meat, wood, banana, cloves and wheat malt. The taste is sweet and dry with strong smoke notes. Typical weizen notes with banana and cloves that is nicely ballanced with the smoke notes. Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a medium carbonation and a medium body. A tasty rauchbier 5.10% - Found at the Bayou.

Aecht Schlenkerla - Urbock RauchbierNose of smoky malt, oak, and brown bread crust. Flavor starts with sweet malt followed by a beautiful smokiness, charred oak and pork, brown bread, molasses, dates, and a hint of black licorice on the finish that lingers with a bit of smokiness. 6.6% Found at the Bayou.

Aecht Schlenkerla - Marzen RauchbierPours a deep red-brown color, with a medium top of beige head. This aroma is truly something. Full of smoked ham with wood and some hints of coffee and leather. The flavor is malty and sweet with a lot of smoke. Roasted malts, caramel, smoked ham and firewood. It finishes off dry with smoke in the back. The flavors are really balanced and the smoke never get too overwhelming. The aftertaste has a good lenght and the smoke is hanging in there for a good time. Smooth and silky mouthfeel with medium carbonation and a medium body. 5.4% Found at the Bayou.

Cascade Brewing - Sang RoyalPours a dark purple-brown body, one finger white head with good retention. Nice lacing and moderately sized film that sticks around a while. Smells of cherries, dark fruit, acetic acid, oak, raisins, fig. Quite acidic. Flavor is similarly acidic; lots of oak, a moderate contribution of cherry and dark fruit, not quite a true Kriek but the cherries are here to supplement the acidity and oak. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, on the thinner side of the spectrum, good carbonation, hefty dose of acetic acid makes it a bit tough to swig. Overall, a very sour ale with a nice cherry presence. 9.40% Found at the Bayou.

New Beer Friday 4/22/22

If You're looking for subtle IPAs this week, you can keep on look'n. None of that weak-ass shit is happening here this week. We have Terpenes, Sours, Bretts and extreme dry-hops.

Grid City - Spanish Cedar Infused Whole Floor Dry-Hopped Nitro Pale Ale: Made with Cryo-Citra, Cry-Mosaic and whole flowers of the before mentioned hops. This was also aged on Spanish cedar spirals, which add wonderful wood notes. The hops are nice and citrusy with low bitterness. The nitro gives it a silky feel. I love this one. 4.8% - Only at Grid City.

TF - Speaking TerpaneseHerbal, citrus, vegetal nose. Whoa! That chewy. I’m picking up some wasabi I think? Na....Citrus peel for sure along with pine and pipe tobacco. Pineapple and ginger next with that dank nug envelope coating the mouth. There’s a lot going on here. The flavor assault covers the booze pretty well, That being said, you'll still get quite hammered. 13.0% - Available at TF.

Shades - Dank AF: This is more subtle than Speaking Terpanese. That being said, this is still quite chewy and dank. Mostly pine resin with some bitter orange peel. Some terpene flavors add to the full mouthfeel. It lives up to its name for sure. If you're in to Dank and chewy, you'll love this. 7.0% - Found at Shades, Bayou, Beerhive,

Epic - Horchata Cream Ale:Light cinnamon aroma. I was expecting a cinnamon bomb, it’s much more restrained. Light cinnamon, slight malt sweetness. Captures the intent for sure.5.0% - available at Epic today.

RoHa - Point Break Series (War child): This is a wild brett blend fermented on RoHa's Dog Tag IPA with added fresh pineapple. Funky/yeasty aroma with some vague fruitiness. Prob my fav Brett pale in many moons. 5.0% - Available today at Noon for RoHa's 5 year anniversary. A limited quantity of crowlers will be available, and will be pouring the remainder on Friday only until its gone.

Lagunitas - The WaldosA rich malt presence in the nose over a slightly boozy background with resiny hops. The taste is big on hop resins, sappy with some spicy and boozy notes. The finish is assertively bitter, but it fades into a tongue coating spicy and piney hop smear. 11.7% - Found at Beerhive, Slackwater

RoHa - Big Green Couch: This re-formulated Double IPA has a nose comprised caramel, lots of grapefruit, a touch of pine resin. New Beer Friday 4/8/22

Still pissed at me for my Pliny the Elder prank on April Fool's Day? Well, get in line; there are people way more important than you wanting to kick my ass. To make it up to you, I've compiled a massive list of local craft AND out of state brews, guaranteed to make you forget my (and any other) devilish pranks.

Proper - Ye Old Boi: There's whiskey in here for sure. Light caramel. Not quite the heavy body you’d expect from an 11% beer. Being an “English Strong” this has caramel corn, with bourbon accents and a sneaky hammer. It seems tame, but it’ll kick you in the pee-pee if you’re not paying attention. Available at Proper.

2 Row - Spring SaisonAroma is citrusy, yeasty, and very spicy. Perhaps a hint of a honey-like sweetness. Taste is not overly sweet, yet it's not overly dry. Citrus and spice rapidly cycle. A primarily dominant lemony-citrus flavor emerges, but it is then quickly cut by a varietal of different spices; clove being the most prominent, but others are definitely present. Quite phenolic as it warms. 6.3% - 2 Row, Slackwater.

2 Row - King Zeangland: This Triple IPA features Nelson, Motueka and Southern Cross hops. It's full of tangerine peel. the sweet malt gives it a more citrus feel. This will destroy you, if you thing you're better than it is. 13.0% - found at 2 Row.

Bonneville - Cool Fuzz: This NEIPA features Cashmere hops which provides a burst of citrusy lime flavor while flaked oats and barley create a pleasantly-round mouthfeel. 5.0% Only at Bonneville.

Wasatch - Pink Boots IPA: This debuts today. No tasting notes on this one. 5.0%

Pink Boots IPA finishes with a clean and refreshing hop presence. $1 from every pint sold will be donated to the Pink Boots Society Utah Chapter. 5.0% - only at Level Crossing.

Mason Ale Works - Gwion And the Witch: This is a Cinnamon Bun Style Pastry Stout. Cinnamon pretty much runs the show, it defiantly has that cinnamon roll vibe, but it also comes across as a holiday winter warmer. It's a bit too much cinnamon for this time of year... for me anyway. 13.5% - Found at Slackwater.

Mason Ale Works - Sweet Creams Are Made of These (Raspberry/Blueberry)This milkshake inspired ale has huge amounts of raspberries and blueberries added with vanilla and lactose. Thick body with tart raspberry and blueberry notes to finish. 8.0% - Found at Slackwater.

Returning Favorites

2 Row - Old Fence Wrecker: This beer is a colaboration on many fronts. Made from a recipe formulated by award winning home brewer Zach Belles, this barrel aged barleywine. Look for flavors of caramel and toffee, followed by a hit of bourbon barrel that provides woody oak, vanilla and more caramel. Mid-palate continues with bourbon, and brings out sweet dark fruit notes of fig & raisin . Named for Beehive bartender, Barry Strom who's love of barleywines has resulted in more that one accidental fence demolitions. 11.6% - available at 2 Row Brewing.

TF - Corduroy Looks like Sunny Delight! The aroma is extremely pungent, with pineapple, mango, guava, grapefruit. You can catch a whiff from the glass from a few feet away.
