New Beer Friday 1/27/23

There's no doubt that it's been a record snow year. The same goes for Utah's beer industry. So much new stuff keeps rolling out of the breweries; it can be overwhelming. Plan your New Beer Friday attack well and you'll be fine.

On today's Beer Nerd Radio, Epic Brewing is in the studio. Steph and I will get into Epic's history and their adios from Denver on top of all the beer. Look for us at 2pm today on 99.9fm KUAA or stream us at KUAAFM.org - Photo credit: Dr. Mckenzie Skiles

Silver Reef - Irish Dry Stout: Missed this one. 5.0% - Available at Silver Reef's brewery.

RoHa - Hazy IPA: Beer poured a slightly clouded orange with a smallish white head that has some okay hang time. Nose was a moderate combination of oranges and mango. Taste follows the nose, a nice blend of orange and mango over a moderate malt base. Finish was more balanced with trace bitterness. 5.0% - Available at RoHa today.

Bewilder - Low Hanging PHruit: This is a NZ style pils made with Moutere, Nelson Savin & Nectaron hops with thiolized Lunar Crush yeast and house blended lager yeast with Phantasm powder! Between this NZ hop blend, the thiolized yeast & the Phantasm; I can promise you you’ve never had a Pils, (NZ or otherwise) like this. Big citrus peel & vague berries. Damn tasty. 5.0% - Releases today on draft and in cans.

Bewilder - Spelt Lager: This small batch beer debuts today. No notes on this. 5.0% - At Bewilder.

Strap Tank/Proper - Buggy No.9/Thunder Cougar: Just to be clear, this collaboration has two different names. The Strap Tank is called Buggy No. 9 and Proper's is Thunder Cougar. Anyway, this Australian Sparkling Ale is brightly carbonated with a light grassy aroma. Malts are toasty and sweet with some fruitiness from the yeast. Hop again are grassy and herbal which comes from the imported Pride of Ringwood Hops. An effervescent brew that creates big hoppy burps. 5.0% - Available at Strap Tank's locations, Proper Brewing and Slackwater.

Park City - Limoncello Sour: More lemon than lactic tartness here, which creates a lemon forward beer that's not abrasively sour. Fresh tasting for sure. 5.0%

Offset Bier Company - Slarve: A modern approach to brewing pilsner that explores the concept of thiols and their unique tropical flavors and aromas. 5.0%

2 Row - Spring Fever IIPA: Missed this Impy IPA that features Citra, Galaxy and Motueka hops. 8.1% - At 2 Row today in 12 ounce bottles and Growlers.

Proper - Snake Jazz: This is the same basic recipe as the collaboration Aussie Sparkling Ale above, but hopped with Ruwaka and Motueka. Look for a slightly fruitier and less dry version than the Thunder Cougar. 5.0% - Only at Proper.

Beer Zombies - Zombie HWhip: This "smoothie" beer features Passion Fruit, Papaya, Peach and Pineapple. This shit is THICK. Smells like a fruit salad, tastes the same with papaya leading the way. This doesn’t taste terrible, but holy shit, Jamba Juice doesn’t make anything as sweet & fruit forward as this. 8.0% - Only at Beer Zombies.

New Beer Friday 1/20/23

Hops reign this week, if you're not a fan of aggressively hopped beers, you should probably sit this weekend out. If you're still good to go, it looks like you're all heard to beer nerd heaven.

This afternoon on Beer Nerd Radio, Steph and I talk with Eric Beaner, Head Brewer at Salt Flats Brewing. Eric is relatively new at Salt Flats and is shaking things up at the SLC brewery. That at 2pm today on 99.9FM KUAA or you can stream us live at KUAAFM.org/

Offset - So Out It's In: This Mosaic/Simcoe IPA features hops that were flash froze, fresh from the bine and then cryogenically pelletize them so that the delicious fresh hop character can be available any time of the year. 7.0% - Available at Offset and The Bayou.

Park City Brewing - Kickturn Double IPA: This is PCB's first packaged beer made in-house that's above 5.0%. The beer was co-pitched with two thiolized yeast strains that pack an absolute fruit bomb of an aroma. Tasting notes of peach, papaya, and melon rind are backed by a soft bitterness and go down far too easy for a 8.1% abv. A generous amount of Mosaic, Strata, Cashmere, and Chinook dry hops make for quite sensory experience when cracking this. Only available at Park City Brewing.

Saltfire - Series of Singularities (Azacca)Mildly hazy gold with a finger’s worth of off-white head that has average retention. A good amount of visible carbonation. Biscuit malts, citrus rind hops, and herbal/grassy hops. Not a huge amount of aroma. Bitter citrus, grassy, and a bit brassy. Biscuit malt sweetness. Some tangerines and melon as well. This comes off as closer to balanced than expected. Moderate bitterness in the finish. 7.3% - Available at Saltfire.

Fisher - Long Shot Timmy: Another Mosaic/Simcoe beer, this one is a pale ale though. Tropical fruit hints of orange peel, mango, grapefruit, lemon, papaya, and pineapple. Earthy hop hints of grass, pine resin, and cannabis. Malt hints of caramel, grains, and cracker along with yeast. Tastes like it smells, a juicy and grassy hop forward taste with notes of citrus fruit and grass. Upfront tropical fruit notes of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, papaya, lemon, and pineapple. 5.0% - Only at Fisher.

Red Rock - Monkey Mind: Packing a ton of hops in this session IPA, Red Rock is offering this 16 ounce can of double dry-hopped citrus and tropical fruit beer. This is brand new and fresh-fresh! 5.0% - Available at all Red Rock locations and at Harmon's grocery stores.

New Beer Friday the 13th, 1/13/23

Happy New Beer Friday the 13th! It's an excellent weekend to be a beer lover. It's also a shitty weekend to be a beer lover who's abstaining from alcohol this month. So much delishishness awaits, including Utah's newest and strongest locally made beer.

Bewilder Brewing will be celebrating their 3rd Birthday tomorrow (1/14). To celebrate Bewilder will be offering special batch of Kolsch and a special batch of their Double ESB, aged in barrels that showcase Bourbon and Irish Whiskey.

On Beer Nerd Radio today Steph and I welcome in Tim Chappell from Utah's next craft brewery, Apex??? Yeah we'll get into everything happening at their South Salt Location, and when you can expect to have you first swigs. That's today at 2pm on KUAA 99.9fm in SLC, or you can stream us at KUAAFM.org/

Offset/Cellarmaker - Drawn To The Dark: This collaboration coffee infused oatmeal stout features intense coffee flavor and aroma from the Costa Rica beans from Blue Copper Coffee. With all of this, the finish remains soft and smooth inviting. 7.5% - Available at Offset, The Bayou.

Kiitos - Imperial Barleywine: Utah has a new, strongest, locally made beer. Kiitos says this has been lagered one year. I’m picking up on aromas of burnt caramel, orange marmalade, toffee, sweet honey, toasted oak, golden raisin, and lightly toasted malt. I’m glad this isn’t overly sweet like I thought it may be, and I’m surprised by the slight boozy bitterness present in this one year old ale. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting sweet toffee, brown bread, golden raisin, sweet vanilla, coconut, light oak, and a touch of bourbon. The swallow brings notes of sweet caramel, toasted oak, toasted coconut, earthy bourbon, light cherry, and honey. A medium full body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a hot and sweet beer. Finishes surprisingly dry for what it is. Only at Kiitos - 15.6%

Strap Tank - Seriously Citra: This Citra hop bomb features Bright and brilliant clarity, straw, white persistent head. Citrus aroma with orange peel, grapefruit peel, low lemon lime, hoppy. Flavor starts with bright citrus hops, moderate lingering bitterness, very light cracker. Dry, crisp, higher side of carbonation, quenching. 5.0% - Available at Strap Tank, Lehi.

TF - Angie Winter Sour: A playful spin on the classic Clover Club cocktail, this beer boasts notes of juniper, orange peel, and raspberry, perfectly aged in oak. 5.0% - Limited availability on draft at TF.

Firestone Walker - Cali Squeeze Blood Orange Hefeweizen: Missed this one, but I think you get the gist of this beer from its name. Made with real juice. 5.0% - Found at Slackwater.

Timmermans -Lambicus Blanche: Wheat added to a lambic? Its flavor is slightly tart and fairly rounded with a hint of lemon peel, slightly sweet but excellent as a thirst quencher. The addition of spices such as coriander and dried orange zest, creates a beer with a light, fruity flavor, deliberately cloudy and subtly spicy. 4.5% - Only at the Bayou.

Tynt - Meadow Ale: Mahogany colored, with a lasting beige head. Its aroma carries hints of dark chocolate, liquorice, and rich fruit flavors. The beer is full-bodied, gently balancing the taste of dark chocolate, pepper, and fig. It leaves a warm and dry finish. 7.4% - Only at the Bayou.

Delahunt - Salvatore: is a dry hopped Italian style pilsner brewers with Saphir and Tettnang hops. Giving it tasting notes of Buddha's Hand, ruby red grapefruit , aged cedar and fresh pine. 4.7% - On the guest tap at Talisman Brewing.

New Belgium - Oakspire (Four Roses)The aroma is mild with notes of sweet malt and wood. The taste is semisweet caramel and barrel char up front with spicy bourbon notes trailing into an earthy mildly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. No sign of the ABV in the taste or aroma, even approaching room temperature. Overall, enjoyable strong ale. 9.0% - Found at Beerhive

Avery - Electric Sunshine: Look for notes of papaya, pineapple, kiwi and huckleberry. It delivers a satisfying tart zap to your taste buds. 5.1% - Found at Slackwater.

Revision - Tahoe Haze: Said to contain 66.66% Citra and 33.33% Mosaic hops. Look for waves of orange and tangerine flavor. 6.5% - Found at The Bayou.

Lumberbeard - Batch One: Missed this one. This IPA features Sabro, El Dorado and Citra hops. 6.3% - Found at The Bayou.

Lumberbeard - Plumcran Zuff: This holiday ale is kettle soured with plum, cranberry, cinnamon and vanilla. 6.3% - Found at Slackwater.

Lumberbeard - Party Pants: Missed this session IPA. 4.8% - Found at the Bayou.

Bombastic - Chatter | Lime & Salt: Missed this Mexican style lager that features a good dose of lime lime and minimal salt. 4.7% - Found at Slackwater.
