New Beer Friday 3/21/25

If you've never seen Duck Dodgers in the 24th and ½ Century, you have homework this weekend. I promise it'll be worth it. If you've never tried any of these New Beer Friday suds, you have homework as well. In some cases you can do both assignments at the same time.

Beer Nerd Radio reaches back into the wayback machine to visit a land before time. 2023 it was a far more innocent age - we were oblivious.... meh, never mind. Today we present a Best of Show from the radio pub. Steph and I hope you'll check it out.

And while I have you: fans of Beer Nerd Radio have noticed that our option to stream past episodes is gone. Station management is working on it. It's a casualty of our growth as KUAA modifies our website. We hope it will be back soon. I have approximately 88% of the episodes saved and I'm working to get them to you all in podcast form soon. It's a lot of work, but we're working on it. Thanks for continuing to tune in. -Mikey

Uinta - Ryan Murphy's Irish StoutNamed for Ryan Murphy, head of Uinta’s R&D and creator of this beer. Roasty aroma. Nice roasty taste too. Not far into ash or char territory, but just enough. Finish has some slight char, finishes clean. I don’t think this it a true nitro pour. More like low gas co2. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Proper - Blarney StoneNice roasty stout. It comes across as an amped-up version of a traditional Irish stout. Slightly charred, with a good dry finish. ABV isn’t too noticeable, would pair well with a peanut butter whiskey…. Because it did. 7.0% - Available now at Proper.

Proper - Juicy Boots (2025 Pink Boots Blend)Possibly my favorite Pink Boots blend IPA so far for 2025. Citrus, peach and melon dominate for the most part. The finish is dry, it that seems to be a part of this hop blend. Nicely floral & slight herbal finish. Give this a shot.

Fisher - Hidden Peak Pale AleThis pale ale features Cashmere hops. Look for a light bodied, big fruity aromatics and taste with a mild bitter finish to make this beer the perfect crusher after a day on the slopes. A portion of proceeds from this entire batch of beer will benefit the Todd Greenfield memorial scholarship. 5.0% - Available at Fisher.

Salt Flats - English Brown Ale: Nice malt profile, plenty of toasty grains with caramel-like sweetness. The whole package is quite nice. If I had a driver I would have made that a beer back to pair with a Bonneville Bourbon. 5.0% - Available now at salt Flats.

Red Rock Wit and WisdomKicks off with tangerine melon and kiwi that start to unpack as mango and berries creep in and join. Berries and tropical fruit showcase well in the middle as pineapple and tangerines weave in and out of frame and closes like it started. Another winner from Red Rock. 7.0% - Available now at all RR locations.

2 Row Coastal CollisionA malty IPA, straight outta the west coast IPA playbook. Lotsa citrus peel, some pineapple, peach & berries. At 11.1% there’s plenty of heat backing it up. It’s a beastly WC TrIPA.

Heber Valley - Yōtei: Missed this new Japanese Rice Lager. 5.0% - Available at Heber Valley Brewing.

Talisman - El Guapo Dorado: Missed this "Golden Mexican Lager". 5.0% - Only at Talisman.

Level Crossing - Fruit Bat (Peach, Mango & Cara Cara Orange): Missed this one yesterday. This is available on nitro and an additional keg with be added to the Co2 tap at the main brewery this weekend. 5.0%

New Beer Friday 3/14/25

Pink Boots beers be are slowly rolling in, and this week one managed to slip into New Beer Friday's "research" schedule. On top of that it's another diverse offering this week, including a ton of St. Patrick's Day themed suds at practically every damn brewery out there.

There's a new brewery on the horizon and Beer nerd radio has 'em in studio today (Friday). Wolf Dog's Derik DeBoard will be in to fill us in on all what's happening now and what to expect in the coming months. The Radio Pub goes live at 2pm every Friday on 99.9FM KUAA.

UTOG - Shreddin' Yeti: Missed this new his American Lager. 5.0% - Available at UTOG.

UTOG - Palm Tree Porter: Aged in Jamaican rum barrels, Palm Tree Porter this is packed with rich flavors of chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of smoke, all wrapped up in a smooth, dry finish. We crafted this porter to let the bold rum barrel character shine. 8.5% - Available at UTOG

Ogden Beer - Danger Pony: Missed this new Belgian-style Pale ale. 5.0% - Available at Ogden Beer.

Salt Flats - Fog Light: This is on the board as a Juicy IPA. It's mostly herbal aroma with some melon notes. Tastes the same more herbal/melon with some citrus way in the back. A nice IPA, but it ain’t "juicy" like the sign says. 5.0% - Available at Salt Flats and their restaurants.

Uinta - Good Luck Babe: Uinta's 2025 Pink Boots Beer is a Rye IPA and who loves a rye beer? This guy does! Great aroma, citrus and some coconut? Flavor is good too. More citrus with an herbal hop bite. That coconut is there too but closer to the finish. I’d like a lil more rye, but I could still crush a couple pints. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Uinta - Sinéad's Photograph: This Irish Red Ale is a damn perty beer. Lotsa Ruby highlights. Toasty grains and caramel up front. Hops seem fairly tradition, or maybe Cascade? Probably shoulda got a stein of this Irish Red. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Hopkins - The Hop, Belgian Pale Ale: Hopped with Chinook, Simcoe, Mosaic, Ahtanum, El Dorado, HBC 638, Idaho 7, Sabro. Some clove and malt in the nose. First swig has a tiny amount of clovy yeast , but the hops pushyou away from the clove notes. This ain’t my fav style, but I’m trying. The hop profile help overcome the yeast. If you like hoppy saisons? You’ll like this.

Hopkins - Orchard-House Fruited Sour (Key Lime and Guava): Even though the base beer has a nice medium tart base the Key Lime still pops, giving it a fresh taste. The guava has a tough time fighting its way through the tart onslaught though. That being said, I really enjoyed this sour. 5.0% - Available at Hopkins.

Chappell - Turning TrixMade with Trix “extract” this sour features no hops, just lemongrass. Super fruity, kinda reminds me of Smarties. There a mishmash of fruit flavors - just think about Trix berries or Smarties candy and it’ll all jive for you in this sour ale. 5.0% - only at Chappell.

2Row - Eclipse Eterno: I missed this new Dark Mexican-style lager. 5.0% On draft now at 2 Row.

New Beer Friday

There's plenty of New Beer Friday brews to get you through this snowy Friday. I'm Sure you'll find something to get you through the weekend.

Helper Beer is back. in the Radio Pub for an update. Hit us up at 2pm today (Friday) on 99.9FM KUAA.

Uinta - The Gust if a Thousand Winds: I’m not sure what style of pils this is. Probably WC Pils? It’s too busy in here to ask. It’s DDH, tap handle says “WCNENZ” West Coast - New England -New Zealand? Some melon, grassy, earthy & citrus hops with a toasty malt base. Tasty stuff. 4.0% - Only at Uinta

Uinta - Wyld Juicy: IPA: Toasty malt profile with some candy-like fruitiness. Somewhat berry forward. Doesn’t taste like an IPA much, more like a fruity pale. Wouldn’t call it “juicy” either. Maybe they’ll tweak it next batch. Meh. 5.0% - Available at Uinta.

RoHa - Pink Boots 2025 Dragon Fruit IPA: Available 3/8 (International Women’s Day): Dragon Fruit pops out front with some citrus & herbal hops sliding in. Nice bitterness - it’s not too strong but noticeable - balances out the dragon fruit well. 5.0% - Available at RoHa.

Salt Lake Brewing - Four Corners: This session IPA starts citrus and herbal with a hint of berries. Earthy too. Finishes clean & dry for the mist part - what I mean by that is that it’s fruity, with a minor lingering bitterness. Nice pale ale. 5.0% - Available at SL Brewing.

Fisher - Zumo's First Kiss: Zumo is a New hop to me. Kinda reminds me of Zappa. Big herbal & earthy profile with a tiny bit of cites peel in the back. Slightly bitter finish. 5.0% - Only at Fisher.

TF - The Pasture: A spontaneously fermented ale that's described by having Big notes of apricot and lemon. Funky in all the right ways. The malt character is soft and bready, while the natural terroir profile is sharp and citrus forward. There is a subtle oak character, a hint of clove and spice, but a ton of fruit and funk. A true labor of love and patience. 6.8% - Only at TF starting today.

Also this week, Maui Brewing entered the market for the first time you can some of their beers at Slackwater locations.

New Beer Friday 2/28/25

It's a short 'n sweet New beer Friday. Enjoy your weekend!

Shades Brewing is just days away from opening its new SLC Brewpub/Distillery. Shades' Grand Poobah, Trent Fargher returns to the Radio Pub at KUAA radio to fill us in on what you can expect at 2pm on Friday. You can also stream us on KUAAFM.org.

Chappell - Excommunicated: This is a new-school North West style Double IPA. The "new school" part of this beer is the use of 2 experimental hops and a new hop extract. Hop HBC522 is essentially new along with Cascade that is far less pithy bitterness and a mixed aroma of floral pine and citrus with a strong pop of orange. Look for strong aromas of fresh citrus and summer pine that gives way to hoppy flavors of cantaloupe and dried mango with a mellow pine-like bitterness. All the hops are balanced out with a semi-sweet malt bill with hints of honey and biscuits. 8.0% To Go Only.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

New Beer Friday 2/21/25

Happy New Beer Friday. Need some thing to help reinvigorate you after a very damp few days? Our brewers this week have the perfects options to help you find your happy place.

Beer Nerd Radio this week is Wine Nerd Radio! After more than two and a half years of covering all manner of fermented beverages, it time to "class-up" the radio pub with Blue Sky Auberge's Sommelier, Natalie Hamilton. We're lucky to have her stop by. Steph and Mikey get things rolling at 2pm every damn Friday at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Chappell - Garbage Pale: Nelson provides gooseberry, grassy, tropical fruit character with a little dankness and the Motueka adds some beautiful lemon/lime character. Tasty Pale Ale, 5.0% - Only at Chapell.

RoHa - We Love L.A.: Proceeds go to Greater LA United Way wildlife relief fund. Nice hop profile. Nelson Savin hops pop at first, then the cryo citra hit bringing back home. Clean tasty, finishes dry with a hint of melon. Tasty stuff. 5.0% - Available now at RoHa.

Uinta - Barrely Brown: Aged on Brazilian Amburana won chips. A nice combo of wood and ale. The toasty caramel of the brown ale is the perfect bed for this Amburana wood. It’s full of vanilla, nutmeg and hints of cinnamon. You’d think this was a spiced beer, but it’s only the wood chips. Nitro is creamy smoove 🤤 Mikey Likey!

Proper - A Kiss From A Rose: This wheat beer features cranberry and jalapeño. Both the cranberry and chilis are subtle in this wheat ale. Tartness is low as well, as is the heat from the jalapeño. Though after it warms the scratchiness from the pepper becomes more pronounced. 5.0% Available now at Proper.

Prodigy - Black Serenade: The is the first beer in Prodigy's new small batch series. Look for prominent but restrained coconut up front, dark, bitter and roasty with a subtle chocolatey sweetness. 5.0% - Only at Prodigy.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

New Beer Friday 2/14/25

Happy New Beer Valentine Friday!

No sappy Valentines Day shenanigans happening in today's Beer Nerd Radio as we have the "queen of the collaboration", the "buddy of the brewers", the "lady of the lagers" Ogden Beer's own, Jacquie King.

Bewilder - Miami Ice: This Cold IPA was lagered & hopped w/ CENTENNIAL, MOTUEKA & ENIGMA. Nice melon/berry aroma. Big, chewy hops start it off w/ more melon & a slight hint of diesel. The berry pops in next with grapefruit peel rounding it out. Dank-ish finish. 7.4% - Available at Bewilder today.

Bewilder - Side Hugs: This session ale is chasing the low ABV market. Very fragrant orange & pineapple. Tastes follows with floral notes. The Sabro, Strata & Motueka keep it interesting even though the body is in the basement. A tasty session IPA. I’d have another. 3.0% - Available at Bewilder today.

Fisher - Monta Lou's Krush: Brewed with Zappa Hops. Have you ever seen a Zappa hop cone? It looks like a wet cat. However in this beer it tastes spicy with notes of mango, passion fruit, citrus, and pine. It’s not for everyone, but if you like a raw New Mexico native tasting pale ale, you have a pal here. 5.0% - only at Fisher.

SL Brewing - Castaway Coconut PorterOn Nitro! Aroma of roasted malt & light coconut. Oh baby! A light touch with the coconut creates an exquisite combo with coffee-esque roastiness. The nitro conditioning is velvety smooth & just helps this porter disappear in moments. Another Mikey Likey! 5.0% available at SL Brewing/Squatters

Stormbreaker - Steambreaker: Exclusive to Beer Bar in SLC. A nice toasty steam beer. Light malt that not too biscuity, combined with a good dose of floral/piney hops. It’s overall super crushable & an excellent steamer/Cali Common. 5.2%

Stormbreaker - Liquid Hot Enigma: Um yeah, this features Enigma hops. Another Cold IPA for ya. This one is much lighter & drier than the previous. It’s more traditionally “lager”. Light malt profile & body with a tasty blend of herbal & citrus hops. I dig it. It’s a wee dry for princess Mikey though. Love the name! 6.3% - Only at Beer Bar.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

New Beer Friday 2/7/25

Happy New Beer Friday. We have a round selection of beers this week, with most of the food groups represented.

RoHa - Snow God IPA: This West Coast IPA features Galaxy, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops. Galaxy, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops. Big West coast DIPA hop profile with a dry-hopped herbal bite. You can tell there’s a lotta leafy parts here bringing it to an almost dank place. Finishes dry and doesn’t feel 8.0% - Available now at RoHa Brewing Project.

Uinta - The Juice is LooseFits the name. Super fruity with a solid malt backbone. Little to no bitterness with hop profile that throws out peach, berries and light citrus. Prickly co2 which keeps it from feeling too sweet. Some toasty crackers towards the finishes. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Red Rock - Ono (Coffee and Coconut): Aged in bourbon barrels 24 months and conditioned on toasted and raw coconut. Jack Mormon Coffee provided a blend of Typica, Catuai and Caturra coffee beans. The barrel for the most part is subtle giving the the wonderful coffee blend plenty of room to shine the coconut is also subtle. There's a lot happening here, but it all seems to come together nicely. 10.5% - Available today at all Red Rock locations.

Proper - Kentucky Common: Nice and toasty up front. It’s not without a bit of caramel malt, but the two jive well. I don’t know the Ky Style as well as the Ca style, but this is an overall great beer. Reminds me of a more malty Kolsch. Absolutely crushable, anytime of the year. 5.0% - Available at Proper Brewing.

Proper - 1984: This American lager: Some adjunct flavors, mostly corn with some biscuit and herbal/floral hops. Bright co2 - great light lager. 5.0% - Available at Proper Brewing.

Proper - BBC ESBNice malt profile. Slightly lighter body for a lighter ale. Good amount of caramel-like malts with a medium amount of floral hops. This would kill on nitro! 5.0% - Available at Proper Brewing.

Proper - Cold and JuicyNice. Kinda spicy melon with some light citrus peel. I like the overall profile. It’s light but the hops are quite tasty. 5.0% - Available at Proper Brewing.

SL Brewing - Glinda's Blackberry: It has a ruby red grapefruit color. Smells of fresh blackberries. Lightly tart! It gives the fresh berries the ability to taste like fresh berries. Drinks really well. Not a lacto sour FYI. 5.0% - Available at SL Brewing/Squatters

TF - N/A Hazy Pale Ale: Not sure what the actual name is for Templin Family's debut N/A beer, but look for a Citra and Mosaic hopped beer with notes of lemon and raspberry. 0.0% - at TF starting today.

New Beer Friday 1/24/25

Short n' sweet best describes this week's New Beer Friday.

Slackwater's Beer seeker Joey Cardaccio joins Steph and Mikey in the radio pub today (Friday). Joey's procurement skills have turned Slackwater into a beer powerhouse in Utah. Check us out today at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA.

Kiitos - FonioFonio is a drought tolerant grass/grain that hails from West Africa. Kiitos is the only brewery in the western hemisphere to make a 100% Fonio beer. It pours completely clear. Some slight sake-esque fruit notes like apple, not tannic. Yuzu flavors make a big appearance here too along with some pleasant white peach flavors. The citrus qualities are strong and upfront. No hops here, it’s all the Fonio grain. 5.0% - Only at Kiitos.

Hopkins - Cole's "Helles" Kitchen: This smoked Helles was brewed with 100% local Solstice malt that was smoked with Beechwood sourced from outside of Logan, UT. It pours a crisp golden color with a nice head. The nose is dominated by pilsner malt, noble hops and light smoke. The taste has a light touch of smoky flavor to it as well as the hops. Good drinkability if you're a fan of mild bodied smoke beers. 5.0% - Only at Hopkins.

New Beer Friday 1/17/25

We here at New Beer Friday Industries will not be left behind regarding the acquisition of bodies of water. From this day forward, the Great Salt Lake will now be known as the "Gulf of New Beer Friday". Yes, we are aware lakes are not gulfs. So while visiting The Gulf of New Beer Friday, we recommend checking out some of these Lake errr... Gulf worthy suds!

Beer Nerd Radio welcomes the whole damn brewery (well 3 brewers) from Level Crossing this afternoon at 2pm. It is rumored they have a special announcement. How's that for a tease? You'd better tune-in, lest you be uninformed. 99.9FM KUAA.

Hopkins - Belgian Tart Ale (Apricot): Lemony tart aroma with stonefruit. Subtle tartness lets the apricot shine. Moderate co2 keeps it slightly creamy creating a tasty fruit-sour… in that order. 5.0%

Fisher - Longevity Light Lager: A crisp, light lager with a hint of vanilla in the malt. Herbal/floral hops round this 2.99% crushable lager out. If you’re doing “Moist-uary”. It’s right-up your zip code.

Fisher - Fishington's: A play on "Boddington's" This new pub ale is creamy AF from the Nitro conditioning. Great malt character with subtle floral hops. Overall: it’s a brilliant ale. Worth all your hard earned quattloos.

2 Row - House Party: This Malt Liquor is clear as hell, with no aroma. Not as corny I as I thought it would be. It’s there, don’t get me wrong, but there’s still a sturdy amount of malt running the show. Hops are mostly floral & add balance. Papers bag not included. 9.2%

Offset - Just Me: Mt. Hood: Missed this single hop Pils, featuring Mt Hood hops. 5.0% - Available at Offset, also found at the Bayou.

New Beer Friday 1/10/25

Happy New Beer Friday. Dryuary isn't keeping local brewers down as we still have five new beers to enjoy the weekend and beyond.

Elisabeth Osmeloski of Scion Cider Bar will be visiting the Radio Pub today (Friday). We'll get into how one of the top cider bars in North America came about - along with some of their delicious in house ciders. We start at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA.

Prodigy - The Lite Owl Lager: Missed this one. 5.0% - Available at Prodigy and The White Owl.

2 Row - Tropical Fruit Sour: Sweet fruity and wheat malt aromas. Light bodied with aggressive, yet soft carbonation. Tart tropical fruit flavors, dark melon, passion fruit and tart cherries. Malt follows the tartness that is assertive but not too aggressive. Finished dry and crisp. 5.0% - Available at 2 Row.

Kiitos - Sahti: This is a new interpretation on Kiitos’ Sahti. This Finnish-style farmhouse ale made from barley and rye and flavored with juniper instead of hops. The overall profile is fruity, malty & the juniper adds some of that great pine tar character with tannic apple peel.

Salt Lake Brewing - Rye of the Tiger: It has that great spiced rye body we rye lovers crave. Hops skew toward the piney side of the spectrum, giving it a nice old school feel. Great body for a 5% ale & would annihilate pints of this if on nitro. Available at SL Brewing.

Uinta - Dry January. Kolsch: On the R&D Tap: good amount of toasty crackers here. Overall malt profile is light, with slight yeast fruitiness. Solid Kölsch, I could easily crush a stein of this. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 1/3/25

We're Back! Hope you all had a great Holiday. After some time off we have a couple weeks worth of beers. There's plenty. If you're doing Dryuary, you should probably stock-up. Happy New Beer Friday.

Beer Nerd Radio has Slackwater's Mater of procurement, Joey Cardaccio. He's the guy keeping all of us current on all of the craft beer happenings from outside of our boarders. Check us out at 2pm today (Friday) on 99.9FM KUAA.

TF & Wild West Brewing (China) - (yet unnamed lager): This global collaboration lager with China's Wild West Brewing has a very botanical aroma with some peppery notes. Tastes very botanical. Green and red Sischuan peppercorns were brought in from China and are really the driving force to the flowery lager. Some citrus peel pops up as well, giving this a gin-like quality (without all the booziness). So bright and fresh tasting and it’s all driven by those damn peppercorns!

Grid City - IPA (West Coast Style #6): Unfiltered. Looks perfect. Great old school aroma of malty peach & citrus peel. Tastes same with big grapefruit, chewy malt & apricot. The bitterness is west coast firm. Not overwhelming, but not for the NEIPA crowd. A great WCIPA. 7.2% - Available at Grid City.

Heber Valley - The "Choice" IPA: This is the result of using Motueka and Nelson Sauvin hops. A healthy dose of Nectaron round out this New Zealand inspired hazy beer. Look for flavors and aromas of ripe mango, cara cara orange, papaya, pineapple and stone fruit. 7.1% - Available at Heber Valley.

Heber Valley - Dark Ages: This Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout was aged in High West Bourbon Barrels and blended it with blackberry puree and cacao nibs. Dark Ages showcases complex flavors and aromas of roasted malt, dark fruit, fudge, vanilla, bittersweet chocolate and an upfront punch of tart fermented blackberry. 12.2% - Available in 12oz & 19.2oz cans.

Fisher - Southern Scales: This NZ Pale Ale has a lot of citrus with a hint of peach and melon. Nice overall flavors that work well with evenly malty base. 5.0% - Available at Fisher.

Uinta - Corns Light: On the R&D tap. Mostly toasted malt aroma. Like you’d expect, there’s corn for sure, but there’s also a solid Pilsner malt backbone. Hops are floral & lightly herbal. Big co2. Not re-inventing the wheel or anything, just a solid light lager. 4.7% - Available at Uinta.

Ogden Beer & Uinta - Sup Bro: Missed this Sabro hopped Czech-style lager. 5.0% - Available at Ogden Beer now, Uinta next week.

Proper - Second Breakfast: This oatmeal stout has a thick, beige head and a dark-brown appearance, with ruby highlights. The aroma is of dark-roast coffee and brown bread. The favor is roasted coffee, brown bread, and bitterness. Light body and a dry finish. 5.0% - Available at Proper.

Melvin - Juice Oddity: Miss this Juicy DIPA. 8.8% - Found at Handlebar.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

Cheers!
