New Beer Friday the 13th 9/13/24

New Beer Friday does not advocate for the eating of pets in Spingfield, Ohio or in Utah for that matter. Please eat and drink WITH your pets, you'll find it more rewarding. Speaking of "drink", the New Beer Friday "research" team found barrels, barrels and more barrels of new brews for you and companion animals.

Oktoberfest season is already underway, and Beer Nerd Radio is already on it, starting with Bewilder Brewing week-long festival. Tune in Friday at 2pm As we welcome back Cody McKendrick to fill us in on all of the newly brewed fest biers along with other popular suds. Stream us at KUAAFM.org/ or terrestrially at 99.9fm KUAA.

To Celebrate Offset Bier's 3rd Anniversary The gang in Park City has been releasing a bunch of new beers this week ahead of today's big bash in City Park. It all starts at 3pm and goes to 9pm.

Offset - London Style Brown Porter: Missed this Porter.

Offset - Fist Full of Death: This NZ IPA is the next installment in Offset's Spaghetti Western inspired series of Modern WC/NZ beers. This beer features a blend of Simcoe, Mosaic, and Nectaron in the boil. Columbus Cryo in the first dry hop, followed it up with an addition of Mosaic that's bringing more funk and some nice blueberry accents. Then another dry hop with Motueka along with some 24 Harvest Nectaron. Look for notes of honeydew, blueberry and funky pineapple fruit salad with a nice sticky resinous finish. 6.66% - Available at Offset.

Offset/Level Crossing - Just Me, One More (Hallertau): Big, pungent, grassy, herbal notes with a biscuity malt aroma, all of which comes forth in a sort of perfume. Explosive flavor to start, huge hit of hops that go from fruity to bitter and resiny. The malt character is solid enough to hold its own, even though the balance is off to the hoppy side. Bitterness comes in waves and eventually takes over as the palate dries. 5.0% - Available at Offset.

Offset - Barrel Aged Dopplebock: Brewed in May 2023 this doppelbock spent a little over 13 months in Alpine Distilling's Vanilla Toast wheated whiskey barrels. It was then lagered for an additional month before bottling. I haven't had this one yet, it's described as having present whiskey character in flavor and aroma with notes of caramel and dried fruit are complimented by soft flavors or vanilla and baking spice. 10.5% - Available at Offset.

Red Rock - Primal PonderingLotsa citrus all around. Well hopped with doses of melon, berries & a little diesel action from NZ. A Tasty pale with a great malt backbone. 5.0% - Available at Red Rock Downtown

Helper - AltbierAroma is of darkly toasted brown bread, toasted walnuts and hazelnuts, slight black tea, very faint herbal European hops, and malty sweetness. Front of palate picks up toasted dark bread and nuts, cocoa, even a bit of coffee. Mid-palate features spicy European hops and tannins similar to black tea. Spicy European hops alongside decreased toasted bread, nut, and cocoa round out the backend with a lingering aftertastes of toasted bread and nuts. It has a nice dry finish. 4.7%  - Available at Helper Beer, Found at The Bayou.

Kiitos - Chinchilla: This New Mexican style lager was lagered for a whole 7 weeks. Pale yellow bubbly pour with a white cap. Corn, flowers, grass, lemon zest, bright cracker, and lager malt make up the nose. Taste is much the same plus some honey and pear in the middle of the corn. The end is sneaky grass dominated. Feel is light and bright with good carbonation, malt transcends this however to provide enough backbone to not thin out the body, crushable. Really nice Mexican lager. 5.0% - Draft and cans at Kiitos starting today.

RoHa - Locals Only: This NZ Pils pours a clear golden color with off-white head. Aroma has a bit of diesel herbs and citrus. Taste has nice herbal hops with some citrus poking around in back, quite resiny with medium bitterness on the finish. Light body. 5.0% - Only at RoHa.

Salt Flats - Open Road Series (Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale): Big whiskey aroma. The brewers tell me these barrels were emptied on the distillery side & immediately filled with this Scotch Ale. You’d think this would be super boozy. nope. All toffee, vanilla & oak. This a barrel strength ale. No blending! Brilliant! 9.8% - Available at Salt Flats locations.

Wasatch/Squatters - Love Local Series (Polyamory Pilsner): This Imperial Pilsner debuts today (9/13) at 3pm at which time Wasatch/Squatters will have a release party to celebrate this new beer. The beer pours bright golden straw yellow with nearly white head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is mild with lemon, honey and grass. The taste is lightly sweet malt with earthy, slight lemon hops and slight bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. The event goes until 9pm, there will be food and games as well.

Wasatch/Squatters - Plumber's Crack: This “copper ale” has a light caramel malt profile that that is very easy and approachable. It’s like super, super light Barleywine, almost like a small beer. It is a small beer! Very nice. I love the easy drinkability of this.5.0% - Only at Wasatch/Squatters

Wasatch/Squatters - Staircase WitbierCoriander aroma fer sure. Spicy at first, sorta peppery with more coriander. Some orange peel too. For a 5.0% Witbier this has a ton of character. A little spice forward for me, but overall an excellent interpretation on the style. Only at Wasatch/Squatters

Wasatch/Squatters - Bulletproof Zest: This Lemon Kölsch is infused with citrus zest qualities that toward lime & lemon. Good yeasty fruity flavors still manage to make their way past the zest - combined with toasty grains. This is damn light, tasty and  flavorful. 5.0% - Only at Wasatch/Squatters

Wasatch/Squatters - El CornholioThis Mexican lager hits all the classic notes. Light corn tortillas with pils malt. Classic Euro hops are herbal and spicy. Great Latin Lager. 5.0%

Wasatch/Squatters - Hazel Nutty Buddy: Toasty and nutty aroma. Taste follows, but it’s a little more like cake, or maybe muffins? Yeah, muffins with light nuts sprinkled on top. I dig it. Not so much hazelnut, but it’s nutty for sure. A tasty malty ale. 5.0% - Only at Wasatch/Squatters

New Beer Friday 9/6/24

Not much happening this New Beer Friday, most locals brewers are prepping their Oktoberfest beers along with fresh and wet hop beers. in the next week you'll likely see and explosion of lagers, pales and IPAs. But what we do have this week is money, so seek these beers out.

Joe Mastorocco, Beer Nerd Radio's go-to hop expert, returns to talk about the new hops along with what's hot this autumn. We'll have some examples of the new freshness that'll be hitting the market this weekend. The radio pub goes live at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA or stream us at KUAAFM.ORG

Salt Lake Brewing - 89 Barleywine: Brewed to celebrate 35 years in business as Squatters/Salt Lake Brewing Company,  Long time Head Brewer of Salt Lake's original brewpub, Jason Stock crafted this English style barleywine as a thank you to the generations of customers who have hoisted many pints over the past three and a half decades.

Packaged in a special 750 ml. bottle the 89 Barleywine pours a mostly clear amber with an average head. The aroma features toffee, maple, raisins, wheat bread, and some light pine. The flavor leads with caramel and toffee. Raisins and maple syrup rollin next with a delicate sweetness. It maintains a good balance. The mouthfeel is medium to light bodied for a barleywine with foamy carbonation. Overall this beer is a very direct exploration of malt with little in the way of hops – it is fruity and rich, and a joyous beer to drink. 8.0% - Available at SL Brewing Co.

Fisher - HellesNice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of light lemon, cracker, biscuit, herbal, straw, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, biscuit, herbal, straw, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish. 5.0% - Available today at Fisher.

Fisher - Simcoesaurus: Not sure of the spelling on this one, but this Simcoe hop driven pale ale starts with piney hops, then grapefruit, orange, and a touch of lemon. Just the right amount of light malts. Has a floral, bready, and a touch piney finish. Has medium body with a bit of creaminess. Crisp and clean finish. 5.0% - Available at Fisher now.

Chappell - Playground #12: This batch features Sultana and Sabro Hops. Pours a murky pale gold with a nice off-white head; great lacing. Initial impression is citrus, tropical fruits, pine resin, and a touch of caramel. Mouthfeel is almost but not quite juicy. Finish is fairly dry and clean, with more citrus. 5.0% - Available at Chappell.

UTOG - House Shot: Missed this Blonde Ale. 5.0% - Available at UTOG and select bowling alleys.
