New Beer Friday 10/17/25

Yeah, it's the big rivalry Saturday and you're gunna need some fresh new beers to tailgate, pub watch or chill at home. Nothing in this New Beer Friday will keep you down, though the game might.

Saltire's new head brewer Don Moore is in the radio pub we'll get into Don's history along with some of his newest creations with Saltfire. we begin at 2pm every damn Friday at 99.9fm KUAA or at KUAAfm.org/

Level Crossing - Unknown Legend: There’s something about a Czech lager that speaks volumes over others the pils family. That hop profile, here it’s classic with a hint of Hallertau Blanc and X-14. These give it that fruity/fuller body that lovers of CZs expect. Love this style and lager. 6.2% - Available starting today at Level Crossing.

Chappell - D-Bag Series (Ozzy): The second beer in Chappell's barrel-aged series of beers features their War Pig Black Ale that has been aging in bourbon barrels from Fray Ranch Distillery for over a year. Very subtle flavors. A good dose of roasty malt & piney hops too. The barrel is a whole other thing. Excellent bourbon & oak sweetness counters the above mentioned flavors to create an American BA session stout that gives a sessionable BA ale depth. 7.0% - Only at Chappell.

Offset - DAMP 25.04: Offset's final fresh hop beer features 20lb/bbl of wet Gooding Mosaic and wet Jackson Krush with some added Cashmere and Citra. Oh my, the 25.04 really sings to me compared to 25.03. The flavors are so much more broad. I loved the .03 full body; but oh my F’n G! This is at a whole new level. Chewy, citrus zest, hop resin, flowery, tropical and berry notes. This is f’n witchcraft in beer form. 8.0% - Available at Offset, found at the Bayou.

RoHa - Recession Proof: This Hazy Pale Ale Nice has a nice combo of toasty malt and citrus. Reminds me of a nice mid 2000s pale with a great hop profile. The mouthfeel is all 2025 though. A nice combo of the two Generational flavors. Yup it’s Recession Proof! 5.0% - Available at RoHa.

Grid City - Drunken Kitchen Rice Lager: A massive amount of pils malt and jasmine rice with a salad of Huel Melon and Saaz hops. Big lemon zest nose, with toasty grains. There’s a crazy body here that’s light but “fortified”. The rice/hop bill is magic here. A unique, softly sweet, but dry finish wraps it up. 5.0% - Available now at Grid City.

Uinta - Tropical Staycation: This ale was made with a theorized yeast, which adds a huge amount of fruitiness to beer. Whoa! Those thiols are really pop’n in the nose. Can smell this at arm length. Full of pineapple, bitter orange peel and strawberry. Drinks very well. The hops add a punch of stone-fruit and the finish is lingering and dry. I’ve missed bitter pales. 5.0% - Available now at Uinta.

Proper - Wet Hopped Gungan Sith Lord: This wet hopped Dark Czech lager Debuts today. 5.0% at Proper on Main Street.

Proper - Vier Lager: A wet hopped German pale lager. Debuts today. 5.0% at Proper on Main Street.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 10/10/25

A new Tron flick is out and the timing could't be better, as Saltfire releases their long mothballed Master Control Program IPA on the same day. Not to be outdone; it's Big Bad Baptist Day at Epic brewing where all 6 of 2025 variants are being released today. It's going to be a "big' New Beer Friday in more ways than one.

Epic's Big Bad Baptist release is taking over the radio pub this afternoon as well. Head Brewer Clay Turnbow and Head of Sales, Ryan Kluh will be in studio as we work our way through this year's unique variants which are listed below. Don't miss it, today (Friday) at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA  or stream us at KUAAfm.org/

Saltfire - Master Control Program: Back after nearly 4 years This hazy IPA feature a mostly citrus driven profile with a good dose of tropical flavors from the hops. medium/light bitter finish. 7.1% - Available now at Saltfire.

Park City - Pales for ALS: The 2025 blend features Simcoe, Krush, Mosaic, HBC 522 and HBC 1019. Moderate bitterness and body in this American pale ale. Some piney dankness rounded out with a touch of tropical fruit. $1 from every pint gets donated back to the ALS foundation. 5.0% - on draft at PCB.

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Manhattan)definitely Cherry in the nose. Working with the Coco in the stout, you get a definite holiday cherry cordial thing happening when the whiskey barrel kicks in. Citrus peel kicks in at the very end. A very nice representation of the cocktail in stout form. 13.1% - Available now at Epic Brewing.

Epic - Big bad Baptist (Macaron)More Macaroon (probably a typo). Subtle coconut with some nuttiness and “sugar cookie”. There’s cocoa/coffee thing underneath with that signature whiskey/oaky/vanilla profile that wraps it all up in a bow. Probably my least favorite of the BBB sextuplets. 13.5% - Available now at Epic Brewing.

Epic - Big bad Baptist (Lucha Libre) aroma is peppery, with some subtle cinnamon. There’s a  creamy sweetness here, but there’s no lactose at all. The cinnamon remains light throughout. Light vanilla (to me) gives it that round mouthfeel. 12.5% - Available now at Epic Brewing.

Epic - Big bad Baptist (Solstice)“that’s a spicy meatball”. Lotsa anise/licorice in the nose -a hint of berries too. Tastes  middle eastern to me. It’s part of my heritage and damn it, the flavors are familiar. The Anise is so different from fernet or Amaros, if you know the flavors of that region of the Mediterranean, you’ll know what I mean. 13.2% - Available now at Epic Brewing.

Epic - Big bad Baptist (Samurai)coffee pops for sure. Some whiskey as well, but there’s an apple-esque thing happening as well. Combine that with the heavy malt Roast it works quite well. As it warms the Sake is all over the finish. Kampai! 13.0% - Available now at Epic Brewing.

Epic - Big bad Baptist (The Godfather)heavy roast, medium amount of char - some cocoa. Coffee is slightly more pronounced. The whiskey barrel is also pretty subtle. Given the hammer that this Version wields. It’s wonderfully balanced & doesn’t taste the 15.2% that it is. Incredible coffee, toffee & bourbon happening here. - Available now at Epic Brewing.

TF - Ricky HoppySuper fresh and pungent smelling. There’s a whole lotta cone action happening here. Super flowery up front with a bit of citrus following it up. Resiny from there to the finish. Not too lingering, but enough to remind you that it’s a fresh/wet hop IPA. 5.0% - Only at TF.

Offset - DAMP 25.03: Offset's third wet hop beer is out–this one features Citra and Mosaic with some freshly kilned Chinook. They boast, "We hopped the living hell out of this" and that looks about right. This IPA has over 20lb/bbl of wet Citra and Mosaic, followed by some dried Chinook and Mosaic in the pressurized hopback on the way to the fermenter. That's not all: Then It was dry hopped with Lupocore Mosaic and Citra with some amazing Simcoe T90. Whoa! Pungent AF. I’m excited. Massive citrus & papaya. Pineapple too. Tastes of stone fruit, melon & some vague nectar. This has a huge creamy mouthfeel. The amount of above mentioned flavors here are so fresh I wish the flavors equaled the freshness. Tasty stuff! 6.5% - Available at Offset - Found at the Bayou.

Fisher - Devil's HopA Belgian Ale hopped with Mosaic and Citra. It will remind you of a hoppy biscuit!5.0% - Available at Fisher

Heber Valley - Canyon Country IPA: Missed this new wet hop IPA that features Mosaic and Comet hops. Look for aromas of tangerine peel, sweet tropical fruits with some dank herbal notes. medium bitterness. 5.0% - only at Heber Valley Brewing.

Uinta - Dentober: Very nice. Great malt profile. Nice caramel & vanilla. Grassy hops for balance. Excellent. 5.0% - Available at Uinta.

End of line....

RoHa - Brewers Select (Game Blouses): This is a Hazy IPA features Citra and Mosaic, Big citrus peel flavors here with some strawberry as well. It’s simple and effective. It’s well hopped with some resiny smack towards the finish. Excellent hop combo… always. 7.0% - Available today (Friday).

TF/Purpose Brewing - Tomatillo Sour: This Belgian Style Barrel-Aged Farmhouse lager is a collaboration between Templin Family and Peter Bouckaert of Purpose Brewing & Cellars. In August 2023 Bouckaert came to SLC to collaborate with the Templin's for yet another "limited-edition" barrel-aged sour. They went really far out this time with the recipe and Bouckaert even brought his own inoculated oak cask from Purpose Brewing to age in.

Cool color, kinda golden bronze. Mouthwatering aroma; dusty dry like a Geueze with some minor balsamic character and those brettanomyces "horse blanket" notes. Mostly citrus up front unripe tropical fruits too. Oak is next with a hint of that tomatillo twang. As it warms you do get some of those Prickly Ash–peppercorn notes, lightly scratching the back of the throat. Not overly tart, Brilliant, just brilliant. 6.2% - Available now at TF or at Purpose Brewing.

TF - Hoppy Invasion: This beer is from the award winning home brewer Zach Belles, This West Coast IPA features: Warrior CO2 hop extract (boil) Mosaic, Citra T-90, Citra, Citra Dyna-Boost  th en a dry-hopped with a lot of Mosaic-cryo and a Krush. This collab based on a recipe by Zach Belles is to be TF Pro Am entry at GABF. Big citrus all around. A massive amount of Citra here in many forms. Ironically, it’s the Mosaic-cryo and a Krush hops that explode here in a melon/citrus bomb! 7.5% - Available at TF starting today.

Offset - Damp 25.01: This Wet Hop "XPA" features Centennial, Organic Cascade, and Amarillo. Oh my f’n G! That aroma is fresh! So much floral and citrus notes. It tastes so fresh, but not overwhelming. This isn’t a slap of hops it’s more of a “ragu” if that makes any sense? It’s a simple salad of flavors, not gaudy or goche, just wet hop bliss. 6.0% Available at Offset - I found it at The Bayou.

Hopkins - Hopkins Pilsner: Hopkins' new flagship lager features Chinook and Cascade hop with Nova Lager yeast which adds a subtle fruit character. It's so nice & citrusy. The hop bill combined with that crazy fruity yeast, makes this super crushable. Oddly enough, it’s hopped enough to dry it out in the end. 5.0% Available at Hopkins.

I’m funny, but not too bright. 5.0% - Available on Nitro for a limited time at Kiitos. Co2 draft and cans available today.

Salt Flats - Dunkelweien: Super toasty but malty aroma. Tastes the same, however the yeast is in full play now. Lotsa cocoa & char with a slight bit of clove a medium amount of banana. The cocoa & char keeps it from becoming too sweet and it all seems to balance out.

TF - French Pilsner: This collaboration with Haas Hop Farm and PFriem Family Brewers was made with Aramis hops. Big grassy and herbal aroma. Mostly classic Nobel hops up front then it breaks off into a tiny amount of lemon zest & berry. From there It’s all herbal and a hint of white pepper in the finish. A very nice job hop bill in this pils. Mikey Likey. 5.0% - Available at TF.

Uinta - Clever Girl: Just a hint of spicy yeast in the nose. The beer is t overly sour which means you can still get some of the witbier hiding in the background never thought of a sour wit. Not bad. 5.0% on Uinta's R&D Tap.

New Beer Friday 8/22/25

Breaking: The New Beer Friday News-team is following this developing news situation. "New beers are Beneficial to weekend happiness". Sources close to Utah Beer media confirm that Offset, Red Rock, Bewilder and Grid City are all offering new beers starting today.

Beer Nerd radio will be delving into what you can expect from the DABS regarding locally produced beer, cider, spirits, wine and mead. Certified Pommelier and Ibantik Beverage's Matthew Ostrander will be in KUAA's Radio Pub to give us the lowdown on what all of that means to you and we'll work in some cider news and sensory as well. Were live and streaming at 2pm on 99.9fm in SLC - KUAAFM.org/

Offset - Krushing on Vera: This is the first beer in a new series of 6.3% WCIPAs that are designed to explore Krush Hops. Krush is probably the most exciting hop to come out of the Northwest since Mosaic. It offers a beautiful mix of bright topical fruit, melon, and floral notes that are different than any other hop out there. The plan is to mix Krush at a 50:50 ratio with a different hop each time. It has a really unique, almost nostalgic, candy note to it combined with floral/spicy aspect that really separates it from any other hop. Krushing On Vera is packed with hop flavor and aroma but finishes dry and at 6.3% audits in a 12 ounce can! Available now at Offset

Red Rock - YoYo: This is a blend of Chinook, Simcoe, Citra, Strata, Idaho-7, and Nelson Sauvin hops. New Zealand is represented well here with a burst of Melon and a hint of diesel. Some big herbal notes blur into strawberry, then it kicks into WCIPA mode with chewy grapefruit peel & a punch of piney hops. Yeah, kinda like a yo-yo I guess. Aptly named. 8.2% - Available at all Red Rock locations.

Bewilder - LeichtbierPronounced "Lyesht-beer" this highly attenuated, but light bodied German lager has a toast & lemony aroma. First swig was loooong. Damn it, the first swig of the day is often the best, but this? Sublime. More toasty biscuits and lemony hops. Just a bit of herbal hoppiness next. This is simple, light and crazily crushable. Mikey Likey! 4.7% - Available today at Bewilder.

Grid City - Coyote Elvis Kolsch: Brewed for the Grid City Music Fest, But this ain’t last year’s Grid City Fest Beer. This year we get a Kölsch! There’s a good dose of wheat here, biscuits for sure. Not as yeast fruity as I was expecting. Some herbal hops and grainy bread for sure. Great warm weather, music listening beer. 5.0% - Only at Grid City.

Grid City Hazy IPA #6: The 6th iteration of the Hazy IPA series is kind of a hybrid between WC and NE IPAs. This is fruity and tropical with the yeast adding vine flavors. The hop bitterness leans toward the WC-style having a lingering bitter finish. Tasty stuff. 7.5% - Only at Grid City.

Saltfire - Strawberry Rhubarb Farmhouse Ale: This mixed fermentation ale features a mix of foeder beer and Saltfire's saison. It's got a nice blend of strawberry and rhubarb combined with that great vine funkiness from the foeder sour. It really is nice and light. I'll be drinking the hell out of these in the coming days. 5.0% - Only on draft at Saltfire.

Beer Zombies - Nightmare on Haze Street 2The Zombie train appears to still be making stops in SLC. This DIPA is a solid WCIPA. Citrusy and pithy with sappy/piney hops. It’s got some of that hazy peachy color, but tastes all West Coast. Some tropical fruits in the end. Solid, but not mind blowing. 8.0% - Only at the bar formerly known as Beer Zombies.

RoHa - Kensington Street Festival IPA: Brewed for Saturday's Kensington Street Festival (see below), This new IPA features Citra, Idaho 7 and Simco hops. It's toasty up front. From there it’s all citrus hops. Mostly orange and tangerine. Hints of peach in the back with some of that Idaho 7 herbal smack. 7.4% - Debuts 8/16

Park City - Pray for Rain: This session IPA features a tried and true hop blend of Citra and Simcoe. 5.0% - On draft now at PC Brewing.

Salt Lake Brewing - Lil' R&R: This new ale is a Rye beer was made with strawberries. Look for a solid malt bill the rye qualities get a lil lost behind the subtle raspberry, but all in all, this is a nice refreshing fruit beer. 5.0% - on now at SL Brewing Downtown.

New Beer Friday 8/1/25

We're starting off August right with the New Beer Friday theme, "a pint with a pal". I think you'll find this week's offering will go great with catching-up or a simple, "hey stranger".

Speaking of pals, I'd like to thank Jamie Aslett for stepping-in for the globetrotting Steph B. For the last 3 weeks Kiitos was cool enough cut her loose for a couple hours to help Mikey out for the Beer Nerd Radio Hour. Thanks Jamie! For Jamie's last show we're bring back one of our most popular guest James "jimmy" Weed, The brains behind Solstice Malting Co. James' enthusiasm is contagious and always makes for a great hour of beer nerding. See you at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

2 Row - Patiently Waiting Dopplebock: Look for a nose of sweet malt, molasses, toffee, caramel, rich biscuity brown malts, some toasted sweet bread, nutty, hint of fruit. Taste more rich sweet malt, touch syrupy but good, little caramel, nutty toffee, biscuity toasted brown malts, home of fig date like fruit, fair bitterness with light herbal hop, semi sweet finish. Full body, fairly rich almost chewy, hint syrupy, med carb, touch of smooth alcohol. 9.0% - Available now at 2 Row.

Uinta - Sad Astonomer: I may not be a “Sad Astronomer”, but I am a happy “beer connoisseur”. Yeah? See what I did there? Anyway… This is a lil phenolic and peppery, I like the malt bill, but this is a lil close to saison for me. More orange peel & grains of paradise, please! 5.0% - Available on Uinta's R&D tap.

Uinta - She Doesn't Even Gosé Here: This lime Gosé isn’t as sour as I was anticipating. You know, these things are already lemon forward, then pile on the lime, and well, you know? But this is nicely fruited, you get all of the lime. Not too briny, but a little sodium is noticeable. 5.0% - Available on Uinta's R&D tap.

Salt Lake Brewing - A Beer With No Name: Great tropical nose. Solid hop profile, wish there was a tad bit more rye though. But the hops are a “clinic” of flavor. Melon, strawberry, tangerine all wrapped up on a nice session IPA bow. Some bitterness, not too lingering. Think American Pale Ale and you’ll drool. 5.0% - Available now at SL Brewing.

Top of Main - Blurry Mountain: This new Extra Pale ale has a pale straw-gold with a brilliant white head. The aroma is vibrant with resinous pine and citrus. This is followed by a softer, sweeter whisper of mixed berries, adding a delightful layer of complexity. The taste follows suit, with a clean, crackery malt base allowing the hops to shine. A crisp, dry finish with lingering pine makes this an impeccably crafted and exceptionally refreshing beer. 6.0% - Available at Top of Main and SL Brewing locations.

New Beer Friday 7/25/25

Did you survive Pie & Beer Day? If not, a lil hair of the dog may be in order. Here's this week's list of newest locals to hit drafts and cans.

Beer Nerd Radio welcome Sam Sisk and Jacob Cobb fro TF Brewing. They're part of the dynamic team that keeps Beer Nerds happy with their award winning suds. Join Mikey and guest co-pilot Jamie Aslett today at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Kiitos - NZ Pils: This NZ pilsner features Motueka, Nelson Sauvin, and Riwaka hops. It’s super toasty. Berries & melon are out front with some citrus peel & caramel corn rounding it out. 5.0% Available now at Kiitos in cans and on draft.

Desert Edge - Rhinland Gold Kolsch: Toasty crackers, hint of fruity yeast sweetness. Finished crispy & dry. Tasty stuff. 5.0% - Available at Desert Edge.

Desert Edge - Fjord Explorer: A nice farmhouse ale that has a light phenolic yeast profile with light crispy malts that have an almost fruity character. 5.0% - Available at Desert Edge.

Ogden Beer - Activities Pils: This super crusher is made with Pils malt and rice with a hop bill featuring Vista. Look for nice melon, tropical and stone fruit flavors. 5.0% - Available at Ogden Beer.

Fisher - Velvet Waltz: Loves me some Nelson Sauvin hops! Nice bits of berry & tangerine. A tiny bit of melon rounds it out. Some Strata hops add an herbal bite & a slightly bitter finish.

Salt Lake Brewing - New Moon: The Alt/Dunkel has a nice toasty aroma, like dark bread crust. Taste follows with a light amount of malt and bit of black tea. Clean with a nice fry finish of grass & pine. Tasty!

RoHa - My Neck and My Bock: Dry and toasty. It’s quite nice, but it’s a wee dry for a Maibock. This would kill with some pecan pie! 5.0% - Available at RoHa.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 7/18/25

Happy New Beer Friday!

Beer Nerd Radio is excited to have Phil Chou, former Director of Brewing Solutions at Haas Hop Products join us in the Radio Pub. Phil's resume reads like an encyclopedia of the brewing arts and we're damn excited to hear his story. Join Mikey along with guest host Jamie Kearns (Kittos Brewing) at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Home Range - Crispy By Nature: This West Coast Pilsner is a light and crispy Pilsner with a unique hop character of peach, red apple, and a hint of bitterness.

Home Range - Crystal Visions: This English Golden Ale is served via Home Range's Beer Engine. Exactly what you want from an English ale in the summer.  A delightfully light malt forward ale with hints of light biscuit and a subtle orange character. Some might even say orange crumpet.

Proper - Green Tea Rice LagerOkay, just to be clear. This beer is sooo new it doesn’t have a name. So don’t give me any shit if you can't find it on the menu board. That being said, super crisp & clean. There’s an herbal component that likely the green tea. It jives well, and is absolutely crushable. Nice job! 5.0% Available at Proper.

Epic - Pie and Beer Day (Key Lime Pie)It may come across as a typical lactose sour, but it’s actually a cream ale base with a shload of Keylime. Look at the photo clearly shows very malty base(Vienna malt?) regardless, the amount of citrus combined with the cream ale wurks so well. No lactose in here if I failed to make that clear. 7.0% - Available at Epic.

Uinta - Woahhh: This amber lager has a good amount of toasty grain with a light caramel maltiness. It’s fairly hoppy with a lot of mostly pine & flowery bitterness. Finishes dry for the most part. Not too lingering bitter finish. Whoa! 5.0% - available at Uinta.

RoHa - All Hail the Ale: Missed this new DIPA, but we will profile it live on today's episode of Beer Nerd Radio. Check us out.

New Beer Friday 7/11/25

We here at New Beer Friday Motion Pictures hope you have a super weekend.

In the radio pub today, we welcome Ryan Murphy to the KUAA studio. Ryan is the guy in charge of Uinta Brewing's Research and Development Department. Not a bad gig to have, eh? We'll get into what makes his job unique and how you can get your hands on some of his experimental beers. Beer Nerd Radio starts at 2pm sharp every Friday on 99.9fm or stream us here KUAA and you can even check out past episodes here at the BNR Archive.

Offset - Nothing But Numbers: Taking the DIPA base recipe from Nothing But Lasers, Connor swapped out the NZ hops and used nothing but experimental varieties that haven't been named yet. No one has ever used this hop combo and Offset won't be able to make it again either as two of these varieties never made it to full commercial production. Mostly hops NZH104 and HBC1019 were used and were followed by a large two stage dry hop of more 1019, a new variety called D5-055, and NZH105. Look for saturated flavors of over ripe tropical fruit, orange creamsicle, and bright lemon zest with even a hint of rum barrel from the 1019. Available at Offset, Found at The Bayou also - 8.0%

Offset - Manilita: This new single hop Pale Ale showcases a new hop variety called Manilita.

Manilita is still in an experimental phase, so very little of it is grown. Offset is part of the Freestyle Hop Research Collective which gives them access to some hop varieties before they make it to full scale production. Look for papaya and ruby red grapefruit aroma with hints of pink starburst candy. There are familiar flavors but they're hard to pick out. More customer research is required! 5.0% - Draft is available now at the brewery. Cans will be ready when the labels arrive. Call ahead

Proper - North West Pale Ale: This pale ale is well attenuated, resulting in a crisp, dry body with a very subdued malt backbone. Notes of grapefruit and pine dominate what flavor is there. It's a clean and technically sound beer, but it lacks the depth by itself. It would be a nice beer-back for a nice Rye Whiskey though. 5.0% - Available at Proper.

In other news: Our Mutual Friend Brewing out of Denver hit the market this week, with a quartette of IPAs look for OMF's Inner Light, Neon Nail, Time's Arrow and Stingray Jesus. So far I've just seen them at Slackwater and Beer Bar.

Cheers!
