New Bayou App Lets You Order From Your Smartphone

The Bayou has just released the latest version of their iPhone and Android app. With the latest of The Bayou app you can now order beers right off your phone. You simply obtain a order code from your server, enter it into your phone and then click "Order Beer" on whatever beer you wish.  When you are ready for your check you can hit "Request Receipt" on the app and have your ticket brought right over.

With 490 beers currently in the app, this new ordering method should make ordering your next beer as easy as clicking a button.

Other new features are phone notifications for new beers and weekly firkins as well as other news. The app size was dramatically reduced (we are talking 10's of MB smaller) and there is apparently more robust error handling which should help out those of you with spotty connections.

They also figured out why some people were having problems loading beers into the app.  It was all due to issues between AT&T and The Bayou's DNS server.  They got that sorted out and AT&T people should no longer have any problems going forward.

I think this is pretty cool, I can't wait to give it a whirl!

Cheers!

New Beer Friday - Mother, May I??? Edition

I swear on my mother's coveted dolma recipe that the following New Beer Friday meme is purely coincidental and was not planned to coincide with the release of Not Your Mama's Imperial Milk Stout from Vernal Brewing Company. That being said, it is pretty fucking brilliant. Enjoy.

Vernal Brewing Not Your Mama's Imperial Milk Stout - The nose is sweet with light chocolate and coffee notes - like a rich coffee drink. The taste with huge sweet lactose and chocolate followed by some balancing roasted malts. After you get past the lactic sweetness the coffee notes become more assertive. The end has some bitter cocoa and hint of black malts. Damn! I was really taken aback by how damn drinkable this 8.5% beer is. It's so drinkable and smooth on the palate, you'd swear it was in the 6% range. Highly recommended. @ Vernal Brewing

Uinta Cucumber Farmhouse Ale - The nose has noticeable cucumber with the typical peppery  saison spiciness. The taste starts with light cucumber. The base beer itself is light and simple with some light peppery saison yeast character. The sasion base of the beer never gets lost. The end has a slight juniper berry tartness. Sadly the gin barrel this beer was aged in was blended-out a bit too much, would have liked to have tasted more of that aspect of the beer. It has some refreshing qualities that could make it work well as a summertime beer. 6.2% ABV @ Uinta Brewing and better beer bars

2 Row Nemesis Pale Ale - Has a juicy nose of orange peel and pine. The taste starts with tangerine and ruby red grapefruit - tropical notes, with some juicy melon, as well as some mango. Next comes pale malts and light bread - very clean. One of the best aspects of this beer and and most of 2 Row's beers is the lack of filtration. This stuff is like hop juice, dangerously easy to drink. Perfect balance and a wonderful showcase of how good Brian Coleman is at creating American pale ale styles that we all crave. A must for both IPA and PAle ale lovers alike. 6.3% ABV @ 2 Row Brewing, Beer Bar, BeerHive.

If you're a fan a Danish beers, The Bayou just replenished their stock of hard to find ales including:

Amager Batch One
Amager/Goose Island RyeKing
To Ol Jule Maelk
To Ol Black Malts and Body Salts Black Coffee IIPA

Nogne-O/Terrapin Imperial Rye Porte
Beer Here Ryehopper IPA

Cheers!

Congrats to the winners of the 2015 BeeHive Brew-off - the state's largest AHA sanctioned

I had the honor of judging some of these categories. There are some incredibly talented home brewers out there that are giving the Pros a run for their money. Here are the winners. Can't wait for next for next year!

New Beer Friday 5/1/15

Boulevard Love Child #5 - I haven't had a chance to try this one yet but it's composed of multiple vintages of a Flanders style sour red ale that has been resting in whiskey and wine barrels, stainless vessels and a foeder that held red wine in a former life. This release features soft lactic acidity punctuated with very slight acetic notes and a tart, fruity flavor. 8.2% ABV @ Beer Bar

Avenues Proper Avenues Annual Saison - It's described as having Pilsner malt, oats, raw barley and unrefined brown sugar, all combined with earthy European hops, and the peppery, fruity saison yeast make for a very complex beer. Unfiltered, raw and fresh with a healthy acidity from a sour fermentation and high level of carbonation make this traditional ale both refreshing and perfect for pairing with food. 4.0% ABV @Avenues Proper

Avenues Proper Sam Dogger Lager – (Zwickel) Helles Lager. Helles lagers are famed for their balance and drinkability. They are considered the lager style of Bavaria and Munich especially (If you go there and order “ein bier,” that’s what they’ll give you. The style is less bitter than its cousin the Pilsner, but still light in color. Crisp, with a slight pilsner malt sweetness to the body and just enough German Hallertauer hops to balance, notes of pear, cereal grains, and creamy lager yeast abound. “Zwickel” (which you may or may not use to describe), just means “unfiltered” and can connote some cloudiness. 4.0% ABV @Avenues Proper

Lagunitas Equinox Pale Oat Ale - Described as a creamy, pale oat ale hopped up with a huge charge of Equinox and Simcoe hops for a piney, eucalyptusy, cedary, sprucey, foresty blast. 8.0% ABV @ Slackwater Pizza

Ninkasi Maiden the Shade - It's described as a summer IPA. Big powerful combinations of many different kinds of hops give a big hop profile. We added flaked barley to the beer to make for the smooth body and lighter summer-style IPA.

For Firkin Friday at the Bayou, Uinta has Wyld Child: Salted Orange IPA. Sea Salt, dry hopped w/ Amarillo + Ahtanum & Seville Orange Zest.

Cheers!

Beer Camp - CANfusion Rye Bock
Beer Camp - Chico King
Beer Camp - Double Latte
Beer Camp - Electric Ray
Beer Camp - Maillard's Odyssey
Beer Camp - Myron's Walk
Beer Camp - Tater Ridge
Beer Camp - There And Back
Beer Camp - Torpedo Pilsner
Beer Camp - Yonder Bock
Beer Camp - Yvan The Great

Deschutes - Dopple Dinkle Bock: Havn't tried yet. 10.5% ABV @ Beer Bar

RedRock Fröhlich Pils: This beer has a great floral and grassy nose that full of toasty grains and dry herbal grassy bitterness. The finish is dry and lingering with a hint of sulfur. 5.5% ABV @ RedRock Locations now. Wide release soon.

The Annex is getting into the Firkin fun and will be offering firkins of Epic/Annex beer every Friday starting at 4:30 pm. Their first offering will be the Annex's Schwarzbier Coffee firkin for $4 a pint.

Another Annex beer is also be served via Firkin today at the Bayou. The Brett Pale Ale collaboration with the Lauter Day Homebrew Club is being offered up. This is the same beer that was served-up last month at the Annex, just conditioned for the firkin. Tapping is at 3pm.

And a reminder that this weekend is the Beehive Brew-off Homebrew Competition. The Awards will be held Sunday around 5pm at the Bayou. We will post the results here as soon as all of the awards are given out.

Prost!

New Beer Friday: Summer Solstice Edition

The longest day of the year is upon us. The list of today New Beer Friday offering reflect summer and a strong sense of diversity. All of these beers emulate our local brewers passion, from the traditional to the cutting edge.

Bohemian Bohemian Sommer Landbier: Landbier (“lunt”-bier) is a German designation for beers that are made to be refreshing and sessionable. They trace their origins back to the necessity for isolated farmsteads to produce their own beer from what was on hand.  It’s for these reasons Landbiers are not a style, as each would be very different from their neighbors. Taking these rustic origins to heart Bohemian’s Landbier is a simple beer for extreme crushability. This straw colored beer was left unfilitered to reflect the simplicity of their origins with pale wheat and a touch of smoked malt to add fullness to Kolsch barley for a smooth grainy malt character.  Single hopped using Hallertau Tradition adds subtle floral notes with hints of lemon grass. This beer is not scheduled to be be tapped until Saturday or Sunday, so call ahead or watch social media. 4.0% ABV @ Bohemian

The Annex Brett Pale Ale: fermented with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis, a unique “wild” yeast associated with the Brussels region of Belgium. The complex aroma is reminiscent of a rustic agrarian setting, combining pine, dandelion, hay, and wool. As a counterpoint to the aroma, the taste is bright and sharp with tangy orange-citrus and spice. The malt is short and upfront with hints of dark rye and crust and is balanced by a crisp well rounded bitterness on the finish. 4.0% ABV This will be tapped at today at 5pm @ The Annex.

Hoppers New Zealand Draught: Back by popular demand. The last time Hoppers had this one on they burned through the whole batch just over two weeks. Beautiful bright amber red color - The Rakau hops are so nice, with nice pine and tropical fruit notes. Nicely balanced and so easy to drink. Made with the same lager yeast as their award winning pilsener and helles. 4.0% ABV @ Hoppers.

Firkin Friday at the Bayou: The Annex's American Wheat made with dried lemon and hibiscus. Tapping is at 3pm.

Prost!

New Beer Friday 3/7/14

Hoppers Brewmaster and Secret Agent, Donovan Steele has stepped out of the box once again to deliver something new for us today.

Waikikamukau Draught (pron. Why-kick-a-moo-cow) is an interpretation on a mild ale that has it's roots in 19th century New Zealand. Immigrants from the U.K. back then craved the Mild Ales and Bitters they had back in England. Utilizing locally sourced grain and hops this beer evolved to become a lager. Made with lager malt, light caramel malt, and chocolate malted barley.

Hoppers' single hopped New Zealand-style Draught has an amber brown color, complex malts flavors balanced with juicy New Zealand Rakau hops. The Rakau hops have a pleasant tropical flavor and perfume aroma that sit nicely on top of the soft rich malts. It has a lager crispness, making for a very drinkable session lager. 4.0% ABV @Hoppers

Pelican Doryman's Ale - The nose smacks with sweet pumpernickel, coffee and spicy hops. The taste starts with roasted coffee and sweet toasted malts. The middle brings out some balance with citrus rind and pine. The finish is semi-toasty and dry. 6.2% ABV @Bayou

Pelican Tsunami Stout - Big nose, full of dark fruits, smokey/bitter chocolate and nice rich espresso. The tastes starts dry with slightly bitter coffee beans. Dark chocolate comes next adding some bitterness. Figs, dark wheat, raisins and graham crackers round out the middle with a dry dark chocolate powder finish. 7.0% ABV @Bayou

Roosters Deep Powder Dortmunder - The nose is grassy with a fair amount of citrus peel. The taste starts with strong grassy and herbal hops up front. An understated toasted malt presence comes next with a lingering earthiness. The end is slightly dry with a lasting bitterness. Nice, clean taste. Reminds me more of an Altbier than a Dortmunder - regardless, it's quite tasty. 4.0% ABV @Roosters, Beerhive

Firkin Friday at the Bayou this week is courtesy of Wasatch Brewing. Today we have Alta Ale hopped with Mosaic and Chinook hops. Looks to be a winner. 4.0% ABV

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 1/3/14

In today's New Beer Friday, Firestone Walkers continues with "strong" offerings and the first batch of beer from the Annex is on tap now and looking to fill your glass.

Annex Single Hop Golden Ale (Lemon Drop): The plan for this regular offing is to use different hops in every batch. Considering the size of the seven barrel brew system, this is likely to change quite often so stay on your toes. 4.0% ABV. @Annex

Firestone Walker Pivo Pils: A great, clean, simple lager with huge hop bitterness. Starts with peppery hops and biscuit. Toasted grain and crackers come next with subtle floral and lemonrass rounding it out. This is a really nice dryhopped pils. If you've stayed clear of Pilsners for a while it's time to come back. 5.3% ABV @Beerhive

Firestone Walker XVII Anniversary Ale: Big Bourbon up front. Toffee, chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla, , toffee, fig and molasses follow. It's got quite a full body and has a abv of 13.3%. It's a little young, could probably use a couple months in the bottle. @Beerhive and eventually Liquor stores

Roosters Up a Kriek: An interpretation on a light, tart cherry lambic. @Roosters

Today's Firkin at the Bayou is courtesy Unsacred Brewing. Today the are pouring their Unfaithful IPA dosed with Chipotles. Tapping is at 3pm.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 12/27/13

Sorry I'm late, I'm on vacation which means I get to sleep in, again my apologizes. We hope the Holidays are treating you all well, and if you didn't get enough cheer during the week we have some new beers that will go nicely with the weekend.

Bohemian Smoked Helles: Mesquite-esque smokiness in the nose with hints of biscuit beneath. The taste is full of sweet malt, and smoke with a hint of spicy hops. The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium. A very nice smoke beer. I could easily drink this on a regular basis. @Bohemian

Epic Old Sage Brett:
This is Epic's Utah Sage Saison aged in Brett dosed barrels for about 6-7 months. The Sage is quite prominent with nice smack of sour to accompany it. This is a very limited release. @Epic

Hoppers has the Cask for Firkin Friday at the Bayou: Pale Morning Ale dry hopped with New Zealand Rakau hops. The Rakau hops have a nice perfumy blossom bouquet, mango and pine apple like tropical fruit, and a hint pine resin. The base pale ale has cascade as a late kettle hop.

Raspberry Stinger Hard Apple Cider: The Hive Winery's Stinger hard cider which is partially sweetened with real Utah raspberry juice. The result is a lightly carbonated cider, with the prefect amount of fresh raspberry to blend beautifully with the rich apple flavor. Watch out, it is easy to get “stung” by this cider’s 6.95% alcohol content. Bottle (22 fl oz) - $8.95 Now Available at The Hive Winery.

Cheers!

Beer Geek Social Media

In an effort to better incorporate beer geek social media with their selection of beers the Bayou in SLC has added individual beer link on their website for users of Rate Beer and Untappd on thier mobile devices. The new features on the Bayou's website are simple enough - just identify the beer from the huge list of offerings tap the specific site you wish to be linked to and voilà, no searching or miss-spelled error notifications. It's just another thing to expand my beer geek reach while annoying my wife.

And if your indecisive like me, there is also a random beer generator to help you consider something from the menu that you may never thought of.

If your not using any beer related social media and want to give it a whirl and try me on Untappd - user name "utahbeer". from there you'll be able to hook-up with many like minded beer dorks.

Cheers!

New Beer/Firkin Friday 7/5/13

You can tell it's hot outside because all of our New Beer Friday beers are designed to quench!

Boulevard 80-Acre: The nose is full of lemon rind, grapefruit, and orange. The tastes is fresh with citrus, lemon, grapefruit and grape, moderately bitter, Not much for malt character, a hint of wheat. Finishes dry with faint pine. Definitely not your typical wheat beer. @ Liquor Stores

Zion Canyon 360 Ale: Don't have much info on this one. All I  know is that it's a light citrusy session ale. Anyone tried it yet? @ Zion Canyon Brewing

Zion North Rim Hefeweizen: Again, not much info, I'm thinking it's a wheat beer? Please help if you've had it! @ Zion Canyon Brewing

Budweiser 3.5: Apparently this version of Bud was made for the Swedish market, starting a few years ago.  It comes in at a whopping 3.5% ABV. Makes the local stuff (4%) look like malt liquor. I guess they figured, why not sell it in Utah & Oklahoma? they won't know the difference. @ Grocery/Convenience Stores

For Firkin Friday at the Bayou, RedRock 'be represent'n with an old school pale ale, infused with juniper, bitter orange peel, and if that doesn't peak your interest, it's dry hopped with simcoe hops. Yum!
tapping's are usually at 3pm.

Hoppy Beerday, Bryan!

Cheers!

Attack of the Firkins & No Spaten For You!

It looks like Friday is the day for cask conditioned beers along the Wasatch front. Hoppers started it, the Bayou embraced it now the Poplar Street Pub is providing firkin casks for their patrons. The owners of Poplar Street Pub have set up an agreement with Squatters & Wasatch to provide some of their cask conditioned beers from 3-7pm . Every Friday. We will try to get you the specifics on what is being tapped asap.

Also in local beer news, the state is experiencing a Spatten drought. Mark Alston from the Bayou has been looking into why the chain of supply has dried up, here's what he came up with'

"Nobody knows who is distributing Spaten right now. I have talked to the old U.S. Importer, many Utah distributors and a purchaser at the state. It has simply gone into limbo. The state wants to get it but can't. That is weird enough but I also learned that Utah has a crazy law that if the beer importer dropped the Utah distributor then the beer cannot be sold in state for at least a year before another distributor can sell the beer. So, we might be out of Spaten for a while".
Until Spatten returns, there are plenty of great German imports to satisfy including:
Ayinger
Warsteiner
Pinkus
Stiegl
Becks
St. Pauli Girl
Kostritzer
Celebrator
Aventinus

Prost!

Firkin Friday for 6/14/13

There's a fresh Kolschbier available today at Hoppers. The filtered and lagered version of the cask that Hoppers was pouring on cask in Idaho at the Mountain Brewers Fest. The same beer has been tweaked for the Bayou's Firkin Friday. It's described as a Weiss Kolsch.

It's an unfiltered Kolsch-style often just called weiss or white due to its hazy  appearance. Made with ale malt and a very small amount of Munich and wheat malt. Cool fermented in the high 50's F. Hopped with German Magnum for bittering, German Tettnanger late kettle - hopped, and dry hopped with Hallertau Mittlefruh. Cask re-fermented and conditioned. Only available today. Mark usually taps the firkin mid-afternoon, I'd call ahead.

Also Today, Uinta's Cahoots Double Rye IPA is now for sale (no really) at the brewery & Beerhive.

Cheers!

The Bayou Presents Firkin Fridays

Friday is good day for beer here in the SLC, we started New Beer Friday a few years back to give people a lil' sump in' extra to help find their weekend groove . Next came Fresh Cask Friday at Hoppers Brewpub. Secret Agent & Brewmaster, Donovan Steele has been putting together special versions of his beers on his casks for nearly a year, now we have a third entry to brighten your Fridays.

Firkin Fridays are being put on by the Bayou in order to promote our great local craft beer scene. The object of Firkin Fridays is to offer locally made beers with something unique added to them during the casking. Hops, spices, wood, chilies, etc...

Since this is a single night offering, the participating breweries are encouraged to go as crazy as they want in the cask. This will reduce the odds of repetition and promote the   crazy that exists in all brewers.

Firkin Fridays will begin on June 7, 2013. Here is the tentative schedule. Odds are the specifics of the firkins will not be made available 'til days before tapping.

Desert Edge 6/7/2013
Hoppers Brewing 6/14/2013
Epic Brewing 6/21/2013
Red Rock Brewing 6/28/2013
Wasatch Brewing 7/5/2013
Uinta Brewing 7/12/2013
Squatters Brewing 7/19/2013

The Bayou has also obtained a brand spank'n new Randalizer 3.0 Hop Infuser. This little unit is designed to filter dreft beer through hops or other mediums such as fruits or spices to enhance the flavor profile of a specific beer. Exsperiments are happening right now and as soon as the next "Randal Night" occurs we'll let you know.

Cheers!

National Drink a Beer Day

Yup. Would moi lie about something like that? Hell no! Since there is no new beer today, you must take it upon yourselves to enjoy at least one pint and try to convince the nearest Appletini enthusiast to try a beer instead. I'd recommend a Sour Apple Saison from epic or a Unibroue Éphémère to ease them into bliss.

I've always said, "There's a beer style for everyone, just identify what you don't like your beer to taste like and move on from there".

And if you need some extra help with something new?
Epic's Big Bad Baptist returns in all of its coffee/bourbon glory - Deadhorse Amber from Moab has been reborn in cans and Uinta's Wet 'n Wyld makes appearances on tap at Beerhive, Bayou & Brewvies.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 11/18/11

Looks like the weekend weather is gunna be crap. So we've found a nice diverse selection to help you trudge through it.

Rogue: Good Chit Pilsner - The nose has a subtle note of pear and grass. The flavor is malty with a strong floral and grassy edge, a fair amount of bitterness, a metallic tang and a whisper of fruit. A good Czech style Pils. @Beerhive

Lagunitas: Dopple Weizen
- The nose is fruity, but dense. Lots of banana and peach. Some clove and pepper. Very nice. The taste follows suite with a healthy banana presence, as well as peach, apple, and fig. Herbal with a faint tart spiciness in the finish. Very nice! @Bayou, Beerhive

Deschutes: Fresh Hop Mirror Pond Pale Ale
- The nose is fruity, grainy, and deliciously hoppy. This is a well-balanced pale ale. All of the flavors are there. It's hoppy, but not too much, has a significant malted barley flavor, mango citrus, and pine notes. Delicious! @Beerhive

Shades of Pale: 4 Play Porter
- Just released. 4-Play Porter is a tribute to aviators across the ages for their courage and sense of adventure, especially friend of the brewery Marilyn, an acrobatic pilot, that flies a plane nick named 4-Play. It is a traditional English style porter right down to the top fermenting yeast. Brewed with high quality brown malts which gives this ale a light caramel, black liquorish, peat flavor porter fans love.. @412 Bistro, Park City.

Cheers!
