New Beer Friday 8/28/20

There's no need to scream. We've heard your cries, and in response we're giving you shloads of new beers to end your work week – along with some favorites that are making a return.

Toasted Barrel - Huckleberry Cream Ale: The aroma is mostly dominated by huckleberry. The taste starts again with the berries, some minor sourness and sweet malt. Slight nuttiness in the finish.  Light body, it's an overall enjoyable ale. 5.0% - Available at Toasted Barrel.

Saltfire - Master Control Program: Sadly, no notes on this one. This is being canned this morning and it goes on sale today. Super fresh! 7.1% ....end of line.

RoHa - Barrel Aged Porter: If there is ever such thing as a summertime oak-aged aged porter, this would be the one. Aromas of wood and whiskey. The taste begins with roasted malts and cocoa. Hints of bourbon and vanilla come next with a very nice oak finish rounding it out. 5.0% - in crowlers to-go only.  RoHa is now open for sit down business, with added outdoor seating and limited indoor seating. Check it out.

Fisher - Roating IPA: This week's new IPA is actually a double IPA and it probably Fisher biggest beer yet at 10.1%. This is a west coast style IPA, with big chewy malts and tangerine peel dominating at first. Grapefruit then joins in adding some pithy flavors. The end is mostly resinous pine with a bit of alcohol heat. There is a chance that this may be delayed today, so a phone call may be in order before heading over.

Fisher - Post Office Pale: The hop profile in this pale ale generates big flavor with assertive bitterness, adding significant citrus zest and cantaloupe fruit character. Lemongrass and herbal tea. Bitterness round it out. Nice pale ale. 5.0% - Available at Fisher.

Fisher - Recession Rye: This rye ale has a nice dose of rye that slightly spicy with malts that are on the lighter side. Hops are mostly floral with a hint of citrus. Very nice. 5.0% - Available at Fisher.

Bewilder - Schwartzbier: Dark body with huge roasty aroma and flavor with hints of coffee bean, subtle dark chocolate along with clean and crisp  biscuity malts. A slight hint of floral hops in the finish. 5.0% - Available at Bewilder.

Lone Pine - Crush Puppie: Missed this one. Spotted at Maveriks in Davis County. If you've seen it elsewhere please share! 5.0%

Returning Favorites––––––––––––––––––––––––––

TF - Corduroy: This sold out in hours in its initial release. If you missed it, you get another chance.

Epic - Barrel Aged Pumpkin: One of the worlds best pumpkin beers, in my opinion. The whiskey makes it.

Epic - Imperial Pumpkin Porter: The original big, dark pumpkin ale.

Red Rock - Otto: A brilliant new world lager.

Shades Peach Cobbler Kveik: It's uncanny how they duplicated the pie flavor.

Hopkins Brewing has a new selection a very limited small batch beers for you to enjoy this weekend.

Cheers!

American Craft Beer Week in Utah 2020

In a normal year I would have a big calendar of event to help you plan your American Craft Beer Week attack. What's that? You didn't know it was Craft Beer Week? Well, I'm not surprised. Dur to the state of the world as it is, Most breweries that I talk to had no plans to hold any events – then in pur Utah style a few stalwarts emerged to keep Utah's craft beer week hopes alive.

I should point out that none of the social distancing rules have changed; all of the current interaction rules still apply. So keep that in mind when visiting any of the following breweries or brew pub

The RoHa Brewing Project:

RoHa Craft Beer Bingo - for craft beer week they've made a fun bingo card to help support buying local beer and local breweries. The card is on RoHa's website, along with the rules.

  • RoHa is also supporting a Utah Craft Beer Festi-GO - we have put this out to all breweries to promote on their own, and do their own activities.  We are having live music in the parking lot while you pick-up beer to-to on Saturday from 12 -3.  You can check out our Facebook event for more info on individual breweries.
  • And finally - RoHa has put together two really cool 12-packs, available only at RoHa.  One is a true RoHa mix pack, we currently have 12-beers out on the market, so this pack includes one of each.  The second is an IPA 12-pack, it has 3 of each of our four IPA's, including the new High on the Hop.  Our newsletter that was sent out yesterday summarizes those two packs as well.

    Unita Brewing:

In celebration of American Craft Beer Week, Uinta is giving you a chance to upgrade your backyard bar situation. When you stop by the General Store for supplies this week, you can enter for a chance to win one of two stand-up patio coolers or Uinta Brewing LED signs!
As an added bonus, mention Uinta's Facebook post when you visit any day this week for a free gift. Tues-Sat 12pm-6pm

If I missed something, please hit me up so I can add it to the week's list.

    Cheers!

    New Beer Friday 5/1/20

There will be a lot of releases in the coming days, so plan your brewery trips well this weekend. Happy New Beer Friday.

Shades - Cherry Pistachio Golden Sour: There's some sour stone fruit aromas with a good dose of nuttiness. That taste follows with tart pie cherries taking hold immediately, and just as fast as those  came in the pistachio enters. The nuttiness is medium and they play off the perceived nuttiness you can get from some cherries. Quite different and nice. 5.7% - available at Shades.

Fisher - Pink Boots Pale Ale: Aroma is a mix of grapefruit, orange, tropical, and citrus hops with some sweet caramel and biscuit malts. Taste starts off with a mix of grapefruit, tropical, and citrus hops with some bitterness and some sweet caramel malts. Through the middle, some light floral hops come through with a bit more bitterness and some biscuit malts. The finish is a mix of grapefruit and citrus hops with a hint of pine, some mild bitterness, and some sweet bready malts. 5.0% - Available at Fisher to-go in crowlers.

RoHa - High on the Hop Lazy IPA: The aroma is of tropical hops with notes of mango and papaya. I'm tasting more along the realm of piney to tropical hops and light malt and it's very well balanced, at that. The light malt is at the forefront and the tropical to piney hops appear at the back of the palate. The mouth is smooth and delicate. 5.0% - Available Saturday at Noon. Only at RoHa Brewing Project.

Talisman - Aerith: This sour ale is infused with mango and hibiscus and is a very limited release. This goes on sale today at noon. 5.0% - only at Talisman.

Saltfire - A Series of Singularities Lemon Drop: Made with Lemon Drop hops, this hits today at 11am. 6.9% ABV. Only at Saltfire.

Toasted Barrel - Coffee Brown Ale: Some nutty coffee aromas. The taste is somewhat cola like with some sugary sweetness and percolated coffee. Some vanilla towards the end with a slightly tart finish. 5.0% - Available now at toasted barrel.

Toasted Barrel - Cranberry Cherry Sour: This was aged in red wine barrels. I have no real info on this one, but it is set to be released Saturday. I'll hopefully have more info by then.

Red Rock - Nuevo Leon: This is their Lime Gose aged in Tequila Barrels. This will be a limited release and will go on sale May 5th for Cinco de Mayo. I'll have notes on this before then for sure.

Upslope Experimental IPA: Made with orange blossom honey. Missed this one but it's popping up at select DABC stores. I know the Avenues liquor store has some. 6.5%

    Salude!

    New Beer Friday 4/3/20

Without missing a beat, Utah's brewers keep crank'n out the suds at steady pace. This week's New Beer Friday offerings are all damn tasty and perfect for your video conferencing parties.

2 Row - Quarantine Buddy: Love this name! Slightly hazy, orange-light amber color with some fluffy head and spotty lingering lacing. Smells really good - fresh citrus fruity hops, a little piney hops and a touch of vanilla. Tastes of loads of fruit - grapefruit, orange, mango, passion fruit, peach, lemon. Also has great notes of piney hop bitterness, vanilla, malt and a little biscuit. Mild bitterness is very well-balanced by the malt backbone. Smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel, a little sticky with good carbonation. 6.8% - Only at 2 Row.

Roosters - High Desert Hazy IPA: Pours like orange juice, with a frothy head. Aroma doesn't really catch my interest, though it has a bit of citrus. Orange and grapefruit juice flavor on the first sip gives me just a hint that there's a massive load of hops, and makes my palate anticipate a much more bitter, conventional NEIPA. But that immediate subsides and what's actually here is a juicy, balanced, non-bitter session hazy. Delicious, and shockingly drinkable. 5.0% At all three Roosters Locations.

RoHa - Transom Dark Pale Ale: Pours out a deep dark brown, almost black, with ruby highlights and a thin khaki head. Smells of toasted and burnt grain along with resinous and citrusy hops. Flavor has a caramel malt backbone with tinges of roasted malts. Fruity esters are present. Hops are big on citrus peel and have an earthy character. Finishes bone dry with a balanced bitterness. Mouthfeel is moderate in weight, with a soft and lightly carbonation. 5.0% - Only at RoHa.

Templin Family - At Wits End: Pours a cloudy bright straw colored yellow. Thin velvety white head with excellent retention. Surprisingly effervescent even through the haziness. Aroma has notes of wheat, pepper, coriander, nutmeg and a hint of citrus. Taste has notes of wheat, a hint of orange peel, coriander and spicy pepper. Chamomile then punches out, adding a pleasant herbal quality that carries on through the finish. Its a great beer and worth having. 5.0% - Only at TF Brewing.

Shades - Shockwave Black Currant: Shades doesn't on fruit when it comes to their fruited beers this new beer is no exception. Pours a deep burgundy stained hue. Sorbet flavors build a creamy salad of dark fruits, light pastry, vanilla cream and a sour twinge of red wine. A moderately sweet taste leads with the simplicity of taffy, cobbler and sweet cream as the sour ale leads you towards the finish. Another winner from Shades. 5.7% - Only at Shades.

Toasted Barrel - BA Maple Stout: The nose is boozy, vinious and juicy, not quite forecasting the flavor profile to come. Complex and layered, with flavors of vanilla, oak and cherry that bounce off notes of yogurt and wine and a touch of funk. There a Balsamic vinegar twang that is weighty and somewhat puckery on the palate. The beer closes with a long finish, leaving distinct sweet and sour fruit residuals. Probably my favorite beer from Toasted Barrel. Get on this one. 9.7% - Only at Toasted Barrel.

Kiitos - Red is the New Pink (Pink Boots Beer): Pours a deep, dark, ruby red coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt and notes of citrus and red berries, with just a hint of pine. Taste follows the nose, with a great balance of bready, caramel malt and piney, bitter citrus hops as well as a good dose of red berries, with notes of toffee, grapefruit, currant and pine. Finishes with a strong bitterness and some citrus and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. Very nice. 5.0% - Only at Kiitos.

Red Rock - 25th Anniversary Begian Quad: Dark plum color. Aroma is sweet with cola - prune and plum, some vegital notes as well. Taste has some dark fruit flavors, mild phenol, cola, grape and plum. This wins with its late nutty finish, its malty base, its caramel sweetness, and an overblown 12.5% ABV that slowly uncoils its wallup. Only at RedRock.

    Cheers!

Shades - Imperial Lager: Quite fragrant for a lager. Strong malt/grain smell. A bit of orange peel, grass and pear. The taste showcases a sharp bitterness from the hops. Pipe Works - Blood of the Uincorn: Really fresh and aromatic. It opens with a surprisingly prominent malt body. Hints of citrus, grapefruit rind, cane sugar and grass. Big hop bite towards the end accents a brew that's mostly got great balance between citrus and resin. Real drinkable too. 6.5% - Found at Slackwater (Ogden)

Pipe Works - Select Schwartzbier: Missed this one. 6.3% - Found at Slackwater (Ogden)

Pipe Works Donut Soup:  This is an imperial stout. Lactose and vanilla are very evident on the nose, with periodic hits of coconut and coffee as it warms. topped with Kveik yeast, you could say it's as trendy as it gets.

New Beer - Brewery Friday 2/28/20

Utah, you are getting your first brewery of 2020 this week, though the beers are in extremely limited availability. Grid City debuted three of their beers last night at a "Tap Takeover" over at the Commonwealth Room last night. Grid City's tap room and kitchen still has a couple of weeks to go before it's ready for customers, but I did get your first preview of what they have.

Grid City - Honey Cream Ale: This is loaded with local honey and you can definitely taste it. The hops are floral and light and the whole beer finishes quite dry. If you're a fan of honey ales, this one may go straight to the top of your list. 5.0%

Grid City - Pale Ale: A biscuity pale with caramel malts generating a filling malt profile and the hop profile that covers an equally profound bitterness. Flavors of pine resins, fruit and pepper. Finishes with a lingering fruity and spicy hop profile and moderate bitterness. 4.6%

Grid City - English Brown Ale: The taste here is pumpernickel, burnt malts: chocolate, caramel and molasses with roasted nuts and a touch of dark fruit. A floral hop smack rides in the back. Aftertaste is malty and toasty. This was probably my favorite. 4.2%

The Rest of your New Beer Friday is quite stellar. There's quite a few new local option and some very tasty out of market stuff.

Epic - Super IPA Me: This big ass IPA is made with apricots, Citra and two of the hottest new hops on the market GrĂ¼ngeist and Styrian Dragon. The  GrĂ¼ngeist hops add flavors of Passion Fruit, Melon, Berries, Fleshy Fruit and Sweet Pepper. Styrian Dragon offer intense floral character and moderate herbal and citrus tones. All of this is wrapped up in a hearty 12.0% IPA. This one goes on sale Leap Day (2/29) and will available in 32 ounce crowlers. Very limited availability in SLC. So, don't wait too long to snag this one.

Hoppers - Burnout Brown: This is a German-style lager made with Utah grown Solstice barley malt, German Munich and dark caramelized malt. Well hopped at 24 IBUs, and late hopped with US Sterling hops and German Perle hops. A nice combination of spicy and floral hops with toasted and caramel malt. Dark but drinks light.

RoHa - Millennium Falcon: This is a red ale dry hopped with Falconers Flight hops. It has a slight tropical nose with malty notes. The flavor is toasted malt up front with a slight lemon finish. This is the first in series of dry hopped reds that will be available on draft at RoHa. 5.0%

Proper- Plum Sour Ranger: The sourness of the version seems slightly tuned down to allow the tartness and sweetness from the plum to shine. It all comes off as nice balanced drinkable fruit sour.  5.0% - Available at Proper.

Proper - Guava Lamp: The guava is potent, but it’s not being a dick about it. There’s not a lot of wheat, but what is there is nice and biscuity. đŸ¤˜ 5.0% - Available at Proper.

    New Beer Friday 2/7/20

I think you'll find these New Beer Friday options agreeable to most beer nerds. If you're into stouts and porters this will be a good weekend for you.

Wasatch - Cerveza Molé (Mexican Red): Mexico was the inspiration for this beer. Brewed with corn, dried chilies, peanuts, cocoa, cinnamon, allspice, cumin and coriander. for such a busy beer it comes together quite nicely with mole flavors that take advantage of the caramel malt base. Quite nice. 5.0% On tap now, only at Wasatch Brewpub Sugar House, and only for a limited time!

2 Row - Smoked  Jalapeño Porter: The aroma has a faint hint of chilies and roasted malt. In the mouth you get a nice dose of cocoa and dark roast coffee. The jalapeño heat is pretty subtle and is mostly limited to a scratchiness on the back of the throat, with little fire. A solid chile beer. 7.5% Available at 2 Row, I also found it a Beer Bar.

Policy Kings- Imperial Stout: Missed this one. Look for flavors and aromas of dried fruit, coffee, and dark chocolate in this new offering from the Cedar City brewery. ABV N/A. Only available at the brewery.

Policy Kings - Juiced Up: Missed this one. This a citrus forward pale ale featuring notes of grapfruit. ABV N/A. Only available at the brewery.

Roosters - Untamed Juicy IPA: This new IPA is very cirtus forward along with big tropical notes. It only has about 20 IBUs, so the bitterness is pretty low. This just went on sale and shout be at all Roosters locations soon (if it isn't already) 7.0%

Squatters - Strawberry Kolsch: This new 5% version has in-house made strawberry puree. It punches up the fruitiness, but not in an obnoxious way. It's clean, fruity and highly drinkable. Very nice. Available at Squatters Downtown.

RoHa - Barrel Aged Porter: This is RoHa's project porter aged on oak. Look for vanilla undertones with robust malts and a slight bourbon aroma. 5.0% - This is very limited and only available at RoHa.

Kiitos - Oatmeal Stout: This is a straight-up oatmeal stout. Lots of cocoa and chocolate notes here with a slight bit of coffee. It's silky smooth and perfect for a rainy day. 5.0% - On Draft now at Kiitos.

Deschutes - Planéte Rouge:This is a somewhat vinegary take on the oud bruin style. Notes of dark malts, cherry and apple. The 10.2% ABV is a bit overwhelming; combine that with the acidic vinegar and you get an overly aggressive sour that's just average. Available at Slackwater Sandy and select DABC stores.

    Returning

Shades - Kveik Thai Tom Kah: Shades' 2019 gold medal winning herb and spice beer is back in limited release. The coconut is strong enough to be noticed, Ginger is pretty subtle and the lemon grass gets a little lost. All n’ all it’s damn delish. 6.5% At Shades.

    New Berer Friday 12/27/19

I hope the holidays treated you well. It's not like you were suffering from lack of beer this week, but just in case you're jonesing for something new, I did manage to find a few new things to keep the end of the decade fresh.

RoHa - Project Porter: Roasty malt is strong on the nose. There's a lot of chocolate in the taste, and there's a rich creaminess, too. A touch of hop bitterness to balance (or is it char?). Its body is rich and substantial, a lot like a stout. 5.0% - Available at RoHa.

Kiitos - West Coast IPA: The aroma started with citrus peel somewhat bitter with an underlying sweet to bitter pine to blend. The taste was moderately bitter with an underscore of bitter piney-ness. There’s a lingering bitter piney aftertaste leading into a slight dry sweet citrus finish. 5.0% - only on draft at Kiitos.

Pipeworks - Close Encounters: This Black IPA has a bright citrusy nose with subtle cocoa and roasty malts. The taste is bitter up front with citrus rind and earthy notes. The roasted malt followed closely behind with coffee, char , and a hint of licorice. I've kinda fallen off of the BIPA bandwagon, due to a lack of well executed recipes. This one is pretty solid. If you're a fan of the style, check this one out. 6.0% - Found at Slackwater.

Pipeworks - Normcore: This brown ale has a good amount of roasty and toasted malts for a nutty caramel flavor that feels just right for this time of the year; not to sweet, just enough to compliment the toast. It's balanced by a restrained dose of Bramling Cross hops - an obscure U.K. variety that adds fruity notes of lemon, blackcurrant and pear. A solid English style brown ale. 6.0% - Found at Slackwater.

    Cheers!

I had to get all of my homework done before I left for the great American Beer Festival this week; hope I didn't miss anything. Have an excellent weekend!

Roosters - Cosmic Autumn Rebellion: Pumpkin spice aroma with cocoa. The taste is pumpkin spices dough and chocolates. Reminds me very much of those chocolate chip pumpkin cookies.

Epic - Sour Brainless on Guava & Habanero: Barrel aged sour with a nice guava fruitiness. Habanero is subtle and it comes off more scratchy than hot. Nice sour.

RoHa - Plum Sour: There’s definitely brett in the nose. Taste confirms it! Some lacto sour in it too. Plum tartness is prominent. Nice beer. 4.0% - only at  RoHa.

Welcome to August! It looks like you need a beer. New Beer Friday 2/1/19

Many of the out of state craft beers that you enjoy were made possible by the efforts of a hand full of beer pubs that dot downtown Salt Lake. Breweries like Cascade, Mother Earth and Brewery Ommegang likely wouldn't have distribution here, if it wasn't for the efforts of the Beerhive, Bayou and Beer Bar. The Newest acquisition comes to us from SLC's Beer Bar, and I think this one will make many of you happy. As of Wednesday a half dozen of AleSmith Brewing Company's beers hit the Beer Bar's fridges. And if you think that's great news, just wait 'til next week so stay tuned for that announcement. Happy New Beer Friday!

T.F. Brewing - Dry Hopped Passion Fruit Berliner: The aroma has a tartness with tropical hops. The taste starts with a good dose of passion fruit sweetness. It's a nice balance with the lemony tartness from the base beer. It's pretty subtle. The end is fairly hoppy. 4.0% - Available at T.F. Brewing.

Uinta - Clear Daze IPA: The aroma starts off with tropical fruit-driven hops; pineapple, mango and tangerine smells swirl around. Taste wise tropical fruits get it started again with pineapple and mango flavors; the tangerine and big, fleshy orange show up in the middle, but not before that softly sweet, almost lactic, sugar-cookie sweetness hits. Quite light and tasty. 6.0% - Available at Uinta and better beer pubs

RoHa - Stewpid Sexy Flanders: This is basically a sour pale ale with a slight dose of tartness from acidulated malts. This slight tartness plays well off of the sweet malts and gives it an almost berry like fruitiness. The end is noticeably bitter. Finishes slightly dry. 4.0% - Available at RoHa

Fisher - Kitchen Sink Rye Pale Ale: Missed this one. 4.0% - Available only at Fisher

Talisman - Adventures in IPA: This beer was created using a Special limited release Blend of hops called “The Veterans Blend” that was created by Yakima Chief Hops. A percentage of the proceeds from the purchase of this blend were given the the Semper Fi Fund. The Semper Fi Fund is dedicated to providing urgently needed resources and support for post 9/11 combat wounded, critically ill and catastrophically injured members of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

Adventures in IPA pours a light copper orange color with big frothy slight off white head. You will get lots of aroma including earthy pine and resin complimented with big fruity notes like papaya, passion fruit, strawberry, pineapple and mango. The taste is very similar to the nose with ripe fresh fruit on the front balanced with an earthy pine dankness on the finish followed by a mild but assertive bitterness. Great mouth feel, creamy and effervescent with excellent lacing."

Toasted Barrel - Mango Tart: Missed this one. I'm guessing the name says it all. 6.5% - Available at Toasted Barrel

Epic - Maximum Cowbell NE IPA: This is part of Epic's Thursday Growler program. Cloudy orange with a fat finger of creamy off-white head. Peach, mango and orange in the nose. Same in the taste with a definite sweetness but light citrus bitterness and distinct yeast character, too. Full bodied with nice soft carbonation. An excellent IPA. 7.0% - Limited availability at Epic Brewing.

Wasatch - NE Style Double IPA: I missed this one. This part of Wasatch's new Kick-Back Series that are brewed in at the source brewery in Park City. 8.0% - It can only be purchased to-go at Wasatch's Park City brewery; however, it can be enjoyed in-house at most Wasatch and Squatters locations.

Red Rock - Peaches and Steam: I was expecting a good dose of peach flavor in this beer and was happily surprised to find the fruit here very subtle. The taste is doughy and caramel-like with lightly toasted malt and grassy, floral hops that turn more herbal towards the end. Mild notes of peach and berries round it out. Finishes with some lingering toasted grains. 4.0%. Available at Red Rock locations and at Harmon's Grocery.

Hoppers - . Viennese Lager: A light amber colored lager with flavors of premium German malts, hops and lager yeast. Made with toasty Vienna malt and Munich malt. AleSmith - IPA: Pours a hazy golden color with a thick foamy head. Head retention is good. Lacing is great. Has a grapefruit aroma with a good piney hop. There is a hint of caramel. Not as fresh as I would like it but still good. Nice juicy taste with grapefruit and a good transition to a piney hop. There is a mild lemon tartness at the end. 7.2% - Available exclusively at Beer Bar.

    New Beer Friday 1/11/19

Was it a long weeek for you? It sure as shit was for me. It kinda makes you yearn for a slower, simpler time. This week’s New Beer Friday selections are mostly local, which is always a good thing.

Wasatch - American Craft Lager: This lager is rich and grainy up front with a snappy, crisp drying bitter finish backed with herbal hops. The beer has a clean fermentation character with a trace of tartness and is lightly dry. 4.8% - Available at Wasatch Park City (to go/stay) West Side Tavern (to stay).

Wasatch - Oatmeal Stout: This stout smells of roasted malts and a nice dark chocolate. There is also a perceived sweetness of vanilla. The beer also has a vanilla-like  character followed by the richness or oats and roasted malts. The beer is very smooth and has hints of chocolate in it as well. Very Nice.  6.0% - Available at Wasatch Park City (to go/stay) West Side Tavern (to stay).

    New Beer Friday 12/7/18

You won't want to leave your beer unattended this week; as we have great selection of local beers that cover damn near every flavor profile a beer nerd could hope for. Have a great weekend!

Avenues Proper - Ivar the Boneless: This is a Sahti; it's an old world beer style that hails from Finland and normally uses no hops. This beer has a pilsner like feel with hints of must rye and toast. Instead of hop bittereness your met with subtle notes of licorice and anise. As far as I know nobody in the market has ever made a Sahti; It's a beer worth getting to know. 4.0% - Available only at Avenues Proper

RoHa - Millennium Falcon Pale Ale: The taste is malt-forward - sweet with a roasty touch. A subtle touch of hops give the finish an herbal/leafy dryness to balance the sweetness and the mild roast. 4.0% - Available at RoHa.

2 Row - Jalapeno Sour: A lot of people have been cocking their heads when they hear about this beer. It actually came together just fine. The flavor starts lemony tart; not too bracing as to not be quite so acidic. The pepper element is fairly subtle with the Jalapeno's meat driving the show flavor wise. On a heat scale I'd put this at a solid 4 out of 10. Worth checking out. 5.3% - Available at better beer pubs and of course at 2 Row.

T.F. Brewing - Schwartzbier: Super dark black body, fluffy off white bubbly head that lingers. Huge roasty aroma and flavor with hints of coffee bean, subtle dark chocolate along with clean and crisp  biscuity malts. A slight hint of floral hops in the finish. A damn tasty black bier. 4.0% - Available at T.F. Brewing.

Fisher - Ledge Hole IPL: The nose was dominated by citrus hops - grapefruit stood out. The taste copies the nose with citrusy and piney flavors - grapefruit and lemon. Mouth feel is light-medium bodied with a lingering hoppy aftertaste - but not too bitter. Very Nice. 4.0% - Available at Fisher.

Wasatch - Chocolate Coffee Cream: The aroma features wheat crackers and mild coffee. The flavor has notes of milk chocolate, wheat thins, mild coffee and toffee. The mouthfeel is very light with spritzy carbonation. Overall this is a really tasty beer - quite light in body, but with nice layers of flavor, enjoyable like a light coffee drink. 4.0% - Available in cans at the Utah Brewers Cooperative.

Tune in to KBER 101 as we discuss these and other beers with Mick and Allenat at 3:30pm today.

    Cheers!

    New Beer Friday 11/30/18

New Beer Friday this week is brought to you by Utah's Solstice Malts. For no other reason than their grains are all up in your beers this week.

*Just Added Uinta - Migrator: This Beer is a dopplebock aged in Bourbon barrels. Right off the bat you get rich caramel and toffee. Next up you get a hint of roasted malts, then the bourbon kicks in adding complex vanilla and wood flavors. Finishes a tad sweet with not too much heat. Medium mouthfeel. 8.0% - Available at Uinta.

RoHa - Shambo Juicy IPA: The nose has pungent citrus peel and vague tropical fruits. The taste follows with sweet malts more orange and grapefruit flavors. Finishes with a hint of bitterness. 6.5% - available starting today at RoHa.

Proper SMaSH Lager with GrĂ¼ngeist Hops: This is a nice bitter lager made with Solstice malts. The malt Profile is on the toasty side with minimal sweetness. The GrĂ¼ngeist hops are grassy and herbal with a slight citrus quality. If you love a dry lager, you’ll dig this. 4.0% - available at Proper.

Squatters - SMaSH Kölsch: This beer is made with Solstice malts also. It’s light and toasty with more pronounced malt sweetness. The hops are more subtle making this a more malt forward Kölsch. Light and refreshing. 4.0% - available at Squatters downtown.

    New Beer Friday 10/12/18

I don't see what the big deal is. I mean brewers are artists; they create works of art that are immediately put through our own personal shredders, which are then (usually) discarded unceremoniously away from prying eyes. I submit to you the following works of art for you to do as you will. I'd recommend drinking them.

*Just added  Uinta Saddleback Brut IPA: light hay in color very clear with a hint of chill haze. The aroma is mostly light tangerine peel with floral notes. Very little in the way of malt sweetness, but you can tell it’s there. The bitterness is mostly citrus peel with more herbaceous hops and a hint of pine in the finish. Very dry, with prickly carbonation. 4.0%. Just released at Uinta’s pub in cans and on draft.

Toasted Barrel - Fresh Hop IPA: Sadly I missed this new fresh hop. I guess they used four pounds of fresh local hops in the whirlpool plus a healthy dose in dry hopping. The hops were provided and grown by James at Solstice Malt. It's described as a "very light, fresh and hoppy ale". 4.0%. Available at Toasted Barrel.

Toasted Barrel - Young Bruin: This sour brown ale is not your typical Oud Bruin, hence the name. The tartness has a lemony citrus twang with a moderate dose of toasted and caramel malts. It's not as fruity as you'd expect, but it does provide an adequate balance of tart malt. 5.9%. Available at Toasted Barrel, Beer Bar.

RoHa - Fuzzy Pucker: I missed out on this one. This a peach sour ale. 4.0%. I will have tasting notes for you later today at 3:30pm on KBER101 with Mick and Allen.

RoHa - Tile of Life: This is RoHa's Pale ale with Mosaic hops. As with the Fuzzy Pucker I'll have tasting notes at 3:30pm on KBER101.

Talisman - Nut Brown Ale: Aroma is of toasted, nutty malt, chocolate, cacao and some piney hops. Body is light and slightly crisp. Taste is similar to aroma. Finish is long and semi-dry. Good session ale. Only on draft at Talisman

Squatters - Juicy IPA: I found this on draft at Beer Bar yesterday. It starts out like any other Juicy IPA with lots of nice tropical flavors then it switches gears with creamy milk sugars adding sweetness and body. I guess it's more of a milkshake IPA. Very tasty. 4.0%.

Shades - Kveik #4: This is similar to Shades' gold medal winning Kveik #1, however this one was made with Galaxy, Mosaic and Citra hops vs #1's Nelson Savin hops. It also slightly sweeter which gives it a little more balance between malt and tart. Very nice sour. 6.3%. Available at Shades.

Boulevard - Love Child #9: Peppery cherry with balsamic sourness mixed with a medley of various berries. It's semi-dry, puckering and nicely balanced with a good dose of oak in the finish. Sour fans will like. 8.4%. Available at Beerhive and Bayou.

Boulevard - Whiskey Barrel Stout: There’s a good dose of chocolate and roasted malt up front with slight coffee notes. The Barrel has a nice presences with complimenting vanilla. There is a bit of alcohol heat in the finish. Nice. 11.8%. Found at the Bayou.

Great Divide - Heyday Modern IPA: Citrus sweetness with a medium amount of caramel provide a nice platform for a generous amount of tropical and grapefruit bitterness. Finishes dry and slightly bitter with resinous pine. The alcohol is a comfortable 5.8%. Available at the Bayou.

    Cheers!

New Brews Soon For You: September 2018

In today's preview of new brews that are coming soon for your consumption we have what looks to be a shload of new IPAs; guaranteed to cuddle your inner hop fiend. The breweries creating these beers have not officially announced release dates on these, but trust I will let you know when they hit shelves/taps.

Saltfire We Hop - Lupulin Dew: That gorgeous label pictured above is for Salfires new Wet Hop Ale. Wet Hop IPAs require that hops hit the brew in less than 24 hours from the time they were picked. This can be expensive due to overnight shipping costs but the taste is well worth it.

Saltfire Frankly Mr. Shankly: This IPA is Saltfire's entry into the Hazy IPA game. Look for low bitterness, a high amount of tropical/fruity hops and alomg with a good dose of malts.

Proper Hopothetical: This experimental IPA series from Proper will feature - whatever the hell the
boys and girls at Proper want. This "mad scientist" beer will hit whenever with whatever. Hopefully sooner than later.

Vernal Autumn Harvest: I love Harvest ales! They're always so fresh and bright and they seem to add more flavor than the typical beers especially when the air outside tends to get a little crisp. This won't be your typical harvest beer. This one will dial in at a hefty 10%. Boom!

Talisman One-Off Ale: You're not going to get a lengthy description here. The name says it all; look for another whatever/whenever beer from high to low ABV. I do know that whatever these beers turn out to be, they'll be in 22 ounce bombers. Seriously, It's a great thing when breweries invest in experimental one off beers.

RoHa Shambo: Another New England style is headed our way. Shambo is a the RoHa brewing Project's ante into the hazy IPA poker game. This one will come in at 7.0% ABV and should feature a fruit salad of tropicaL and citrus delights. All that and a handy 12 ounce can.

Uinta Pack it Out: This new IPA from Uinta describes itself as being "unfiltered" not hazy so you can
take that to mean whatever the hell you want. Uinta does a pretty good job with their IPAs, even at session strength. They hope you'll take this 4.0% beer with you when recreating in the greatnewss that is Utah. Remeber to pack it out after you pack it in.

    Cheers!

    New Beer Friday 3/30/18

Congratulations, We're having a New Beer Friday!

Shades of Pale - Mojito:  The aroma here is full of citrus-like tartness and mint. The taste is slightly tart, with oaky white rum adding a little bite. Fresh mint then carries the beer's flavor profile to the end with a bit of rind bitterness in the finish. The beer's natural carbonation provides a nice spritz in the mouth, adding to its cocktail authenticity. Although the base is more lemon than lime, the rum and mint help sell its mock-abilty. 4% ABV. Available today at Shades of Pale - 11am.

Utah Pink Boots Society - Mash the Patriarchy: The Pink Boots Society is a beer industry group that is designed to inspire and educate women who work in the U.S. beer industry. On International Women's Day women from many of Utah's breweries gathered at Roosters in Ogden to collaborate on a new beer that will be served at participating and non participating breweries and brew pubs around the Wasatch Front, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Pink Boots scholarship fund. That beer is finally done and hitting brewery guest taps as speak. This Cascadian Dark Ale has a nose that is very roasty and somewhat fruity. The taste follows, but, here I'm getting dark cocoa and grapefruit grapefruit. There is also sweetness, brown bread crust, and mild bitterness, but the overriding flavors are of the cocoa and fruit. Mouthfeel is slick and medium. Finishes semi-dry and refreshing. Easily crushable. 4.0% ABV. Available at Kiitos, Fisher, Proper, RoHa, UBC Store, Uinta, Zion Canyon, Roosters, Beer Bar, Slackwater and Angry Goat.

RoHa Brewing Project - Nights Out:  This Belgian style stout has aromas with lots of dark chocolate and espresso with clove dark fruits coming through. The taste opens up with some dark candi sugar giving off notes of dark fruits. a dry and dark bakers chocolate comes in before being nudged by a breath of cloves. The phenols don't completely take over but they do help push that taste away from any usual stout flavors. It finishes with faint notes of espresso. Available at the RoHa Brewing Project. Soon to better beer pubs.

Epic/Odell - Double D’s Double IPA: This special beer was made for Colorado's Collaboration Beer Festival. It's only being served at the festival this Saturday (tomorrow). All of those tropical notes are present including pineapple, papaya and a shload of citrus notes. It's 9.5% ABV but drinks like 7%, so be careful. It's highly drinkable. Epic released a very limited amount of this beer yesterday, in growlers at the SLC brewery. Don't wait.

Roosters - Limited Release Amber Ale: This is a new high point amber ale. I havn't tried it yet as it is being bottled as I write this. It will be available this afternoon at both Roosters locations in Ogden and Layton. 7% ABV.

Hoppers - The Jenny: A hibiscus flower, rose hip and strawberry flavored ale. Lightly hopped with Hull Melon. Maris Otter and Vienna base malt. Tart and crisp with a fruity finish. Pours a hazy strawberry color. 4% ABV.  Just tapped at noon. Only at Hoppers.

Melvin - Chuck Morris: Tropical fruit aromas hit the nose first, mainly pineapple and alcohol soaked mango. There is also citrus fruit, grapefruit, orange and a good amount of pine. The taste pretty much follows. A good dose of resiny and oily hops give the juice its run for the money. Dry finish with a long bitter linger. 9.5% ABV. Available at Beerhive, Bayou, Dick n Dixie's, Slackwater

    Cheers!
