New Beer - Brewery Friday 2/28/20

Utah, you are getting your first brewery of 2020 this week, though the beers are in extremely limited availability. Grid City debuted three of their beers last night at a "Tap Takeover" over at the Commonwealth Room last night. Grid City's tap room and kitchen still has a couple of weeks to go before it's ready for customers, but I did get your first preview of what they have.

Grid City - Honey Cream Ale: This is loaded with local honey and you can definitely taste it. The hops are floral and light and the whole beer finishes quite dry. If you're a fan of honey ales, this one may go straight to the top of your list. 5.0%

Grid City - Pale Ale: A biscuity pale with caramel malts generating a filling malt profile and the hop profile that covers an equally profound bitterness. Flavors of pine resins, fruit and pepper. Finishes with a lingering fruity and spicy hop profile and moderate bitterness. 4.6%

Grid City - English Brown Ale: The taste here is pumpernickel, burnt malts: chocolate, caramel and molasses with roasted nuts and a touch of dark fruit. A floral hop smack rides in the back. Aftertaste is malty and toasty. This was probably my favorite. 4.2%

The Rest of your New Beer Friday is quite stellar. There's quite a few new local option and some very tasty out of market stuff.

Epic - Super IPA Me: This big ass IPA is made with apricots, Citra and two of the hottest new hops on the market Grüngeist and Styrian Dragon. The  Grüngeist hops add flavors of Passion Fruit, Melon, Berries, Fleshy Fruit and Sweet Pepper. Styrian Dragon offer intense floral character and moderate herbal and citrus tones. All of this is wrapped up in a hearty 12.0% IPA. This one goes on sale Leap Day (2/29) and will available in 32 ounce crowlers. Very limited availability in SLC. So, don't wait too long to snag this one.

Hoppers - Burnout Brown: This is a German-style lager made with Utah grown Solstice barley malt, German Munich and dark caramelized malt. Well hopped at 24 IBUs, and late hopped with US Sterling hops and German Perle hops. A nice combination of spicy and floral hops with toasted and caramel malt. Dark but drinks light.

RoHa - Millennium Falcon: This is a red ale dry hopped with Falconers Flight hops. It has a slight tropical nose with malty notes. The flavor is toasted malt up front with a slight lemon finish. This is the first in series of dry hopped reds that will be available on draft at RoHa. 5.0%

Proper - Belgo-Blitz: Tropical flavors abound in this Belgian-esque NEIPA. You get some citrus peel as well with the slightest amount of clove from the yeast. Generally not my style, but I did enjoy this one. 5.0% - Available at Proper.

Proper- Plum Sour Ranger: The sourness of the version seems slightly tuned down to allow the tartness and sweetness from the plum to shine. It all comes off as nice balanced drinkable fruit sour.  5.0% - Available at Proper.

Proper - Guava Lamp: The guava is potent, but it’s not being a dick about it. There’s not a lot of wheat, but what is there is nice and biscuity. 🤘 5.0% - Available at Proper.

Bewilder Kellerbier: Missed out on this one, but I'll post an update later this afternoon. on Utah Beer's Instagram 5.0%

Uinta - Blueberry Unicorn Glitter Ale: Missed out on this one, but I'll post an update later this afternoon. on Utah Beer's Instagram 5.0%

Salt Flats -  Bombshell Belgian Red Sour: Missed out on this one, but I'll post an update later this afternoon. on Utah Beer's Instagram 5.0%

Hopkins - Black Sesame Stout: Roasty stout profile with a toasted sesame finish. 5.0% -Available at Hopkins.

Hopkins Small Batch Friday Beers:

Raspberry Wine Ale

Root amBeer

Autobahn Ale

Strawberry Peach Saison

WTF Jalapeño/Garlic ESB

House Roadhouse Rye

Horchata Cream Ale

Chocolate Peanu butter Stout

Revision/Shoe Tree - Disco Ninja: This collaboration beer between two of Northern Nevada's favorite breweries is a NEIPA. The nose is very mild with melon and citrus along with floral hops. The taste follows with more grassy hops, mango and peppery orange peel. Very little bitterness. 7.0% - Found at Slackwater (Sandy) and Angry Goat.

Slaapmutske - (FLOSS) Kriek: The aroma is subtle with cherry, vinegar, lemon and oak. Some sweet malts up front in the taste, with sour fruit notes of blackberry, cherry and apple cider. Finishes quite dry with 'oaky tannins' (the name of of my bluegrass band). 5.0% - Exclusively on draft at the Bayou.

De la Senne Narrenvat: This is a brown ale, aged for 10 months in oak barrels with Brettanomyces. It is inspired by the English beers of the past. Look for flavors of red fruits (alcohol preserved cherries) and notes of malt (biscuit, brown candied sugar, caramel, and roasted hazelnuts). It's lightly bitter and sour, with wine accents. 5.8% - Exclusively at the Bayou.

Garden Path - The Curious Mix Methods: Missed this one. 6.9% found at the Bayou.

Cigar City - Margarita Gose: Missed this one. MAde with orange peel and lime essence. 4.2% Found at the Bayou.

New Beer Friday 11/22/19

This week's new beers offer plenty of quality time. How you use it is up to you.

Saltfire - Putin on the Fritz: The aroma is dark charred malt and a little bakers dark chocolate. The taste is roasty malts up front, then some dark fruits and molasses. Finishes with a good amount of   semisweet chocolate. Nice round mouthfeel with a hint of booze. 9.4% - Available at Saltfire

Toasted Barrel Strawberry Stout: There's a good amount of chocolate happening here, it's not overpowering, more like dry cocoa. The strawberry is noticable and pleasant and gives the beer an almost holiday like feel. 9.0% - Available at Toasted Barrel.

Kiitos - Egyptian Honey Wit: This beer with made with Egyptian purple barely from local Solstice Malt and local honey. It starts with bubblegum and clove. Clover comes next with a smidgen of lemon peel which drags you into a thankful dry finish. This one is pretty yeast driven with a lot of phenolic pepperiness.Very limited batch size. 5.0% - Available at Kiitos

Salt Flats Barrel Aged  Kilted Harley: Right off the bat this Scotch Ale offers great toffee and fruity esters from the yeast. From there you get a bit of dark fruit and rum soaked cake. The barrel adds more dark rum & bourbon - rounding out the sweet maltiness of the beer. Quite tasty. 9.0% - Available starting today at Salt Flats.

Roadhouse - Mountain Jam Vol 5: Missed out on this new NEIPA. 6.5% - found at DABC

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 10/25/19

No need to hide Pierre, this week's beers are absolutely "Delcto".

TF Brewing - Jellyfish: This Hazy IPA features 3 different dry hops of Mosaic, Citra and Amarillo. All were added post boil, kepping the bitterness low and and the fruitiness high. Look for big tropical fruitiness with a huge explosive aroma. However when it warms that triple hop does begin to shows itself. 7.7% - Available at TF Brewing Saturday at Noon.

Red Rock - Buffalo Point: There's another new hazy IPA out there for you weekend enjoyment. Red Rock first hazy starts with orange peel, tropical citrus and some dripping pine resins. Fresh peach sweetness, pineapple and some cantaloupe brings that tropical and berry-like fruitiness. Light bitterness of wet orange peels finishes it out. It's lighter ABV adds to the enjoyment. 6.2% - Available at Red Rock locations starting today at 11am.

SaltFire - Punk as F*ck: This beast of a Triple IPA is a collaboration beer brewed with SLC staple Raunch Records. One aspect of the brew that the Raunch crew wanted to showcase is the blood red color of this IPA; That on top of the huge ABV and the massive amount of hops that went into it. Punk as Fuck? could aldo be called "dank as fuck"! There’s also some berry notes and “herb” flavors as well. Finishes dry & bitter. 11.5% - Available at Saltfire.

SaltFire - Wet Hop Lupulin Dew-Idaho 7: This is the second version of Lupulin Dew - Saltfire's wet hop series. This version features over 70 lbs. of fresh and green Idaho 7 hops. The malt profile is a little subtle, it's missing some of the maltiness that you’d expect from a pale ale. The hop profile starts with a good dose of citrus peel adds in some berry notes and finishes with grassy/herbal bitters. It kinda takes this into IPA territory. 5.6% - Available starting today at Saltfire.

Salt Flats - Lowrider:  This chocolate milk stout is brewed with cocoa nibs that combined with the  robust roasted malts creates a flavor that rich and dessert like with a velvety chocolate milk finish.
7.5% - Available at Salt Flats and the Garage Grill.

Salt Flats -  Tankslapper: This Double Rye Pale Ale features spicy rye caramel base with a great hop character that features notes citrus and stone fruit. Finishes with a medium amount of piney bitterness. 9.0% - Available at Salt Flats and the Garage Grill.

Salt Flats - Landspeed:  I missed this one. This is a Belgian style Witbier that is made with orange peel and Coriander. 5.5%  - Available at Salt Flats and the Garage Grill.
Toasted Barrel - Grodziskie: This is a polish style smoked wheat ale. I missed this one, but I'm geeked to try it as only a few local brewers have attempted to make this obscure beer style. Available at Toasted Barrel today.

UTOG - Synergy Coffee Lager: Missed this one. Brewed with coffee from Wasatch Roasting Company. It's a lager which retains its color and relative clarity. These are kind of a mind fuk because of the intense coffee flavors coming from such a light beverage. 4.0% - Available at UTOG

Indeed Brewing - Lavender Sunflower and Honey Dates: New to our market - Very little bitterness with lavender and prominent honey flavors. Some dark fruits notes as well coming from the dates. An itersteding beer but the lack of bitterness brings the drinkabilty down a bit.7.2% Found at the Bayou.

Cheers!

Uinta - Experimental IPA: I haven't had this one yet, it will debut this morning. This IPA is loaded with Citra & El Dorado Hops. 6.5%. In an effort to raise more money for the Sierra Nevada Campfire Relief Fund. Uinta is also donating 100% of of the money from this beer as well.

Epic - Experimental NEIPA: from Epic’s R&D department. The aroma is a blend of mango, peach, and other tropical fruit. On the tongue you get mandarin oranges, bananas, and peaches. It's like a sort of tropical fruit punch. The mouth is resinous and sticky. Available in Epic's high point growlers until they last.

Squatters - Outer Daarrgness: This Rum Barrel aged version of Outer Darkness has a nose of cherry, chocolate, rum and maple. The taste is a nice mix of rum, maple syrup, dark fruits, molasses, and milk chocolate. Mouth is nice and full. Overall, an outstanding stout. 11.6%. Available at the Beer Store

Fisher - The Great White: It smells of bitter, and slightly dank pine needles, peppy orange and white grapefruit rind. Crackers and doughy pale malt come next with the addition of leafy and tropical fruit hops. The finish has leafy pine resins. 6.7%. Available at Fisher starting today at 10am. Very Limited.

Proper - Coffee Pale Ale: Definitely starts with big coffee upfront, immediately it transitions into dry malts with floral/piney hops. It’s like having two beers in one glass. Finishes quite dry. Love the coffee selection. 4.0%. Available at Proper.

Zólupez Stout: This malty stout is spiced with three chile peppers (pasilla, del arbol, habanero) each leaving different hints of bitter herbs and citrus. It’s spicy hot and unfiltered, so best to enjoy with food, not alone. Brewed with actual chocolate- your palate with recognize it. Bottle condition fermentation. 6.97%. Available Saturday at Cerveza Zolupez.

Cheers and Hoppy Holidays!

Utah Breweries Brew Resilience IPA For "Camp Fire" Relief

Salt Flats and Uinta Brewing have joined in a nation-wide fundraising effort created by Sierra Nevada Brewery to support the impacted by the “The Camp Fire” in Paradise, California.

As you may know, on November 8th, the Camp Fire broke out near the town of Paradise, California, and within minutes raged through the community, obliterating a football field per second of everything in its path, destroying nearly 10,000 homes, killing many residents and leveling the town

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has created a beer called Resilience India Pale Ale, and asked other breweries to join in the effort; Utah's Own Salt Flats Brewing and Uinta Brewing have answered the call.
of 27,000 people. It is the most destructive wildfire in California's history.
Both breweries  have already brewed their versions of Resilience IPA and each brewery will allocate 100% of the total sales of this special IPA and donate to support those who have been impacted by
The Camp Fire.

Both Salt Flats and Uinta brewed Resilience IPA on November 27th and will have it available on or around December 14, 2018.

Look for the Salt Flats version at Toscano, Garage Grill, and Salt Flats Taproom while Uinta's can be found at their Brew House Pub.

Kudos to the Salt Flats and Uinta for getting on board with this special brew.

Cheers!

New Brews Soon For You: Uinta, Vernal, Shades and Salt Flats

I came across a few beers that are coming soon to a brewery near you. Each of these beers have (as of today) an unknown release date. I promise to keep you in the loop as to when they hit the market.

Pictured above is Uinta's Alpenglow. Named for a unique phenomena that happens for those of us
that live in mountainous regions of the world. This new beer will be an golden American Wild Ale that is fermented with a combination of Lactobacillus and Brettanomyces that will also be blended with a two year old funky sour beer aged in oak. It will have an ABV of 9.4%.

Also from Uinta Brewing is their new Single Barrel Series. This label is described as being an outlet for Uinta's R&D department; it will feature beers that are new, different and experimental. A special section on Uinta's website will be created for feedback on these beers.

Coming soon from Vernal Brewing is their new Summer Ale. This
ale is just described as being brewed with herbs and spices. Look for it to hit cans in the coming weeks with a quenching ABV of  5.5%. No idea, as of yet if it will go to DABC stores. Keep checking back for info on this one.

Shades Brewing Company (formerly Shades of Pale) will be releasing a new Belgian Style Tripel Ale. This beer is described as having huge huge spicy and fruity flavors of coriander, peach and pear, while having a dry finish. It should come in around 10.0% ABV.

Salt Flats Brewing has a Mexican Ale coming soon. No info has been posted on this as yet, but look for it to fit the mold of hot weather, south of the border beers that are generally light and dry. As soon as the updates come in I'll share them will you. This ale will be a 4% beer.

That's it for this edition of New Brews Soon For You. What do you think of these impending beers?

Cheers!

New Brews, Soon for You: Uinta, Saltfire, 2 Row and Salt Flats

Today in New Brews Soon for You we have a diverse crowd of options coming from many different breweries. Some are coming quite soon while others are still a little ways down the road.

Pictured above is a collaboration beer from Saltfire Brewing and SLC's bad-ass ladies home brew club, the Hop Bombshells. The beer was brewed last weekend and will be one of Saltfire's initial offerings. It's nice to see Saltfire hitting the ground early with a collaboration beer. The beer will be a 6.0% Kolsch called 'Fury' and a portion of the proceeds will go towards the Pink Boots Society.

Uinta Brewing has a new 25th anniversary beer headed our way as well. In the past, Uinta has been releasing a series of fruited sour ales under their 'Birthday Suit' label. This beer will be an Imperial Pilsner that will clock in at 7.5% ABV. You may recall that Uinta made a 9.0% imperial pilsner a few years back called Tilted Smile. I doubt this is the same beer. Look for it in 22 ounce bottles.

2 Row Brewing will soon be releasing a barrel aged version of their Dangereux Farmhouse Ale. This incarnation will be brett soured and aged in white wine barrels. Luckily for you, this beer will be coming sooner than later, with release scheduled in the next 30 days. This will be a very limited release. 10.4% ABV.

Finally we have a new Belgian style ale from Salt Flats Brewing. Midnight Run will be a Belgian Dubble Ale. Look for a rich malty beer with some spicy / phenolic yeast notes and mild alcoholic characteristics. This beer will have a wholly appropriate ABV of  9.0%.

All of these beers are still in their development phases and like all beers will be ready - when they're ready. As always I'll give you a heads up on when they'll hit.

Speaking of  a 'heads-up" I promised release dates for previous New Brews Soon for You beers. Today, Epic Brewing will be releasing their RiNo Pale Ale in SLC. This beer will debut here in 22 ounce bottle at first then transition into 12 cans by the end of May.

Also from Epic: Big Bad Baptist Reserve will go on sale this Friday. This beer is a special blend of the previous releases of Big Bad Baptist, Big Bad Baptista and Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist. This will be a very limited release. I'll have tasting notes on both beers in this week's New Beer Friday.

Prost!
