New Beer Friday 3/25/22

You're probably going to need to snag a loan from your bank to afford this week's New Beer Friday list. There's a lot of damn beer out there this weekend, thankfully it's pretty spread out. Enjoy this picture perfect weekend.

Hopkins - Victory; For Peace
This experimental dry-hopped farmhouse ale features a heavy bubble gum/banana presence, tailing with it is a moderate hop bitterness. With a malt forward body, but still maintaining a dry finish. Proceeds go towards Razom, an organization that helps supply critical materials such as medical supplies, food, and clothing to the people of Ukraine during emergencies. To learn more about this organization and how to donate, please visit https://razomforukraine.org/.

New Beer Friday 3/18/22

It's Not easy doing New Beer Friday research on Saint Patrick's
Day. Too many enthusiastic beer nerds clamoring through my once quiet afternoon watering holes, screwing up Princess Mikey's sensory beer smorgasbord for hours upon end! Luckily, I'm sort of a professional and forgone my typical beer diva hissy-fit, so that I could stay up to the wee hours of the morning and deliver this most important part of your week, so bright and early this fine Friday morning. Truth be told, not much writing will be happening this morning, as I enjoyed too many beers and whiskies Thursday afternoon. Trust Me when I say, the stuff that I had was brilliant and worth you're hard earned quatloos. Cheers.

Uinta - Belgian-style Golden StrongAged in rum barrels: big bubblegum aroma with orange and berries. Taste is Sweet up front, with a medium amount of clove and berries. Uinta - Birthday Suit: This version of Uinta's anniversary sour features apricot. The aroma has that lemony lactic tartness, with just a hint of stone fruit. The taste is quite pleasant. Uinta - Sum'r: You may know this beer as lager that has a nice lemony hop profile. This year however the brand is undergoing a change. The malts are fruity with mostly peach flavors emerging. There is some hop bitterness for balance in the finish. 9.5% - Available at Bewilder in 16 ounce cans starting today.

New Beer Friday 2/25/22

Today Fisher Brewing is going to be celebrating five years of making beer at the resurrected brewery. To celebrate, three new beers were created and all be released one a day over a three day period (Thursday - Saturday). Happy number five and thanks for making Utah a much better place.

Also this week: Park City Brewery's new brewpub in Kimball Junction is in the midst of their soft opening. Since it's a soft opening, check the hours before making the trip. Congrats, PC Brewing!

Fisher - Batch 723Smell is melon, pineapple, and grapefruit peel. Taste is a bit different. Sweet pale malts and white bread, along with honey dew melon, and maybe some pineapple and orangey notes. Floral and pale malt sweetness are center stage with literally no bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and there is no detection of the 9.0%

Fisher - Mysterious Something: Green apple, grainy malt character, hints of whole wheat bread crust, citrus notes, light notes of apricot, fresh cut hay, subtle earthy spiciness, and some Brett funk. Overall the nose is a bit subdued, but makes up for it with it's complexity. Following the nose I get a touch of green apple, red grapefruit, apricot, grainy and bready malt notes lending sweetness, some fresh cut hay mixing with a light floral character, light notes of a dark earthy spiciness with hints of clove and subtle cardamom, and a medium bitterness on the back end that has aspects of citrus, funk, and floral notes. Brett funk character permeates the whole palate. 7.3% - Only at Fisher starting today.

Fisher - Gose: Lightly briny, grapefruit citrusy, mild muffin wheat note... great potency overall, inviting vibrant grapefruit tart flavor and rather potent but hardly off-putting yogurt-y lactic bite... subtle nutty yeast note at the end of some sips - very faint... coriander slowly builds until it's the dominant note in the aftertaste. 5.0% - Available at Fisher on Saturday.

Offset - Riwaka: Single Hop • Pale AleRiwaka is arguably the hardest to grow and hardest to source hop in the world. As recently as 2017 there was only one or two breweries in the US who even had contracts for it. There would be years where none of it even left the country of NZ where it's grown on the northern tip of the South Island. The Brewers who had been able to use it raved about its qualities and incredibly unique profile. 5.0%

Hopkins - Autobahn HefeweizenThis German weiss beer features a robust banana aroma and flavor from traditional Hefeweizen yeast complemented with a light velvety mouthfeel and delicate toasted bread notes from malt. The Granite Bock is then matured for several months on the cool cellars under the brewery. 7.3% - Only at the Bayou.

In the 18th century Jan De Lichte was the leader of an infamous gang of robbers in the region of Aalst, Zottegem. He was executed in Aalst at the age of 25. Barley and wheat are used of course, but there is also oats and buckwheat. Jan De Lichte is the only Glazen Toren beer to which spices are added. Following the Belgian tradition of wheat beer brewing. The use of coriander and curaçoa (Bitter Orange) makes for the extremely fresh, citrus-like taste. 7.0% - Only at the Bayou.

New Beer Friday 2/18/22

Level Crossing - Timpanator: This dopplebock's  aroma has toasted bread crusts and a bit of caramel malt, dried dates, and figs. Better than average, but not particularly expressive aside from the bread crust and caramel malt sweetness.

Flavor is toasty and toffee forward with dense toasted bread crust, light caramel, dried dates, brown dried figs, and mild German hop herbal and bitter qualities. Front of palate picks up toasted bread crusts with light caramel and dried dates, perhaps a bit of German hop herbal and woodsy qualities, though I may be imagining it. Mid-palate of toasted bread crusts, caramel malt, substantial sweetness, dried dates and lesser brown dried figs; there is also a German hop herbal/woodsiness that lingers in the background. Back of palate finds toasted bread crust and caramel-like sweetness fixed to a mild German hop bitterness and woodsiness. Aftertaste of toasted bread crusts, slight caramel and nuts, and a more than modest slightly Germanic hop-driven bitterness.

Wasatch - UTX: This DIPA has a mostly clear body, with a pale amber orange color. Good amounts of fine carbonation at a moderate pace. Head creation is a bit minimal but sturdy, reaching just over two fingers and a bleach white appearance. Excellent ring lacing and swiss cheese fine bubbles in the head, with some staying power. Good solid dank and tropical hop notes permeate the nose. Aroma hits of sticky pineapple and melon primarily. 9.5% - Available at all Wasatch locations.

Very interesting palate. Good mix of pineapple notes, but definitely more attack with earth and spicy like hop bitterness to match. Peppery pineapple flavors mix in with light bitterness in the mid palate. Juiced warmth with good herbal bite on the finish that really lingers. A good malt coating as well that just adds a touch of sweetness but lets the hops do the talking.

RoHa - Dimple Pucker Blood Orange Sour:  blood orange and hibiscus dominate the nose, obscuring much subtler notes of grapefruit, grainy wheat and raspberry. There's also some very slight hints of lemon yogurt acidity.

It's quite a tasty sour, but it's also a restrained one, in that its acidity is kept to more of a low background hum vs. a puckering, in-your-face sort of deal. That being said, it starts off with a brief blast of lemon sourness, which is followed by big notes of blood orange and grapefruit, backed by a lightly wheaty pale malt sweetness. Citrus remains the focus through to the finish, where flowers and berries join the fray, lingering briefly into a mildly tart aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with middling carbonation levels that provide a proper, crisp bite to this somewhat smooth-feeling sour. I found this rather easy to toss back, but depending on your affinity for blood orange and kettle sours, your mileage may vary. 5.0% - Available today at RoHa.

Bewilder - Dark Patersbier: Missed this one. Look for mild clove, banana, raisin and mild caramel. 5.0% - Only at Bewilder on draft.

Bootstrap - Pickle Me Up: I missed this golden ale infused with pickle juice. 4.5% - Found at Salt and Hops.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 2/11/22

Kiitos - Hobble CreekIf you were to say, “this beer tastes like Utah”. This might be the one. This pale ale was made with sage, juniper & elderflowers. The result is an herbal ale with tons of character & local ingredients. Tasty stuff. 5.0% - On draft at Kiitos.

Bewilder - Cosmic Pop: Made with a special Cryo hop blend known as TRI 2304. This Bursts with citrus, both meat and peel - some melon as well. A pleasant bitter finish rounds it out. It's not crazy bitter but it lightly lingers. 6.8% - Available at Bewilder in 16 ounce cans starting today.

Epic - Experimental IPA #3This is mostly a throwback to the early 21st Century IPAs; Lots of Centennial and Amarillo with a sweet caramel base. Not a lot of breweries making old school shit right now. Give it a go. 6.8% - Only at Epic to-go in crowlers.

RoHa - False Profit Hazy IPAPours a light amber color with slight haze, typical, but the off-white head is thick and frothy and sticks around for a while. Aroma is fairly hoppy, if not strongly so, with an undertone of grapefruit and orange. Flavor is hoppy and woody, slightly bitter, a little fruity - mainly orange and grapefruit with light malt sweetness.Texture is fairly smooth, lively and fizzy, leaving a fairly persistent tingle. 7.0% - Available at RoHa in 16 ounce cans starting today.

Desert Edge - 1972 IPA: This came in late, sorry I missed it. 6.6% Available at Desert Edge.

Like a cozy cup of chamomile tea, Honey Mile offers a delicate floral flavor, vivacious citrus aroma and a kiss of honey sweetness. 5.5% - Found at Slackwater

Sierra Nevada - Powder DayThis is a classic WCIPA. Dank citrus nose with stone fruit and melon. Citrus is forward on the taste; picking up tangerine and grapefruit flavors, and there’s also a substantial berry note, which is absolutely delicious, with melon and some malt sweetness in the back for balance. 7.7% - Widely available.

Revision - Baggage Wagon: Missed this one. 8.5% - Found at Beerhive.

Lewis and Clark - Juicy ObSession: Missed this one. Citra and Mosaic hops are blended throughout the brew with lots of late additions and dry-hopping. 5.0% - Found at Salt and Hops.

This Sunday there will be a special firkin competition to celebrate the Super Bowl, featuring Kiitos and RoHa. The pin that's closest to empty by closing, wins the day.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing. Curious to try that Red Velvet Cake!

UTOG - Snapdragon: This is an Imperial Rice Lager brewed with ginger and lime. Look for a light, citrus forward beer with snappy and lightly spicy ginger. 5.0% - Available at UTOG in 16 ounce cans.

TF - Moxie Pale AleThis has that super turbid appearance with an aroma is full of wonderful citrus peel qualities (mostly grapefruit). Taste wise it follows the nose pretty close with addition of orange pith, mango and pineapple. There’s medium bitterness that comes off as dry ruby red grapefruit peel. Alcohol is well hidden. Very nice. 5.0% - Available at TF Brewing on draft.

Proper - Caracosa: When this Gruit debuted a year or so ago, it didn't have the funky barrel-aged treatment then; this however is an entirely different beast. It's herbal like a gruit should be with a bit of wild funk that gives it a light sour profile that is fruity and pleasant. 9.5% - Available starting today in 16 ounce cans at Proper.

Silver Reef - Tropical Thunder: This is categorized as a "tropical-style" IPA, made with passion fruit, orange and guava. The hop bill is comprised of Nugget, Amarillo, Moutere and Mosaic. Sounds delish. 7.0% - You can find this at Silver Reef.
