New Beer Friday 2/28/25

It's a short 'n sweet New beer Friday. Enjoy your weekend!

Shades Brewing is just days away from opening its new SLC Brewpub/Distillery. Shades' Grand Poobah, Trent Fargher returns to the Radio Pub at KUAA radio to fill us in on what you can expect at 2pm on Friday. You can also stream us on KUAAFM.org.

Chappell - Excommunicated: This is a new-school North West style Double IPA. The "new school" part of this beer is the use of 2 experimental hops and a new hop extract. Hop HBC522 is essentially new along with Cascade that is far less pithy bitterness and a mixed aroma of floral pine and citrus with a strong pop of orange. Look for strong aromas of fresh citrus and summer pine that gives way to hoppy flavors of cantaloupe and dried mango with a mellow pine-like bitterness. All the hops are balanced out with a semi-sweet malt bill with hints of honey and biscuits. 8.0% To Go Only.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

New Beer Friday 2/21/25

Happy New Beer Friday. Need some thing to help reinvigorate you after a very damp few days? Our brewers this week have the perfects options to help you find your happy place.

Beer Nerd Radio this week is Wine Nerd Radio! After more than two and a half years of covering all manner of fermented beverages, it time to "class-up" the radio pub with Blue Sky Auberge's Sommelier, Natalie Hamilton. We're lucky to have her stop by. Steph and Mikey get things rolling at 2pm every damn Friday at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Chappell - Garbage Pale: Nelson provides gooseberry, grassy, tropical fruit character with a little dankness and the Motueka adds some beautiful lemon/lime character. Tasty Pale Ale, 5.0% - Only at Chapell.

RoHa - We Love L.A.: Proceeds go to Greater LA United Way wildlife relief fund. Nice hop profile. Nelson Savin hops pop at first, then the cryo citra hit bringing back home. Clean tasty, finishes dry with a hint of melon. Tasty stuff. 5.0% - Available now at RoHa.

Uinta - Barrely Brown: Aged on Brazilian Amburana won chips. A nice combo of wood and ale. The toasty caramel of the brown ale is the perfect bed for this Amburana wood. It’s full of vanilla, nutmeg and hints of cinnamon. You’d think this was a spiced beer, but it’s only the wood chips. Nitro is creamy smoove šŸ¤¤ Mikey Likey!

Proper - A Kiss From A Rose: This wheat beer features cranberry and jalapeƱo. Both the cranberry and chilis are subtle in this wheat ale. Tartness is low as well, as is the heat from the jalapeƱo. Though after it warms the scratchiness from the pepper becomes more pronounced. 5.0% Available now at Proper.

Prodigy - Black Serenade: The is the first beer in Prodigy's new small batch series. Look for prominent but restrained coconut up front, dark, bitter and roasty with a subtle chocolatey sweetness. 5.0% - Only at Prodigy.

New Beer Friday 2/14/25

Happy New Beer Valentine Friday!

No sappy Valentines Day shenanigans happening in today's Beer Nerd Radio as we have the "queen of the collaboration", the "buddy of the brewers", the "lady of the lagers" Ogden Beer's own, Jacquie King.

Bewilder - Miami Ice: This Cold IPA was lagered & hopped w/ CENTENNIAL, MOTUEKA & ENIGMA. Nice melon/berry aroma. Big, chewy hops start it off w/ more melon & a slight hint of diesel. The berry pops in next with grapefruit peel rounding it out. Dank-ish finish. 7.4% - Available at Bewilder today.

Bewilder - Side Hugs: This session ale is chasing the low ABV market. Very fragrant orange & pineapple. Tastes follows with floral notes. The Sabro, Strata & Motueka keep it interesting even though the body is in the basement. A tasty session IPA. I’d have another. 3.0% - Available at Bewilder today.

Fisher - Monta Lou's Krush: Brewed with Zappa Hops. Have you ever seen a Zappa hop cone? It looks like a wet cat. However in this beer it tastes spicy with notes of mango, passion fruit, citrus, and pine. It’s not for everyone, but if you like a raw New Mexico native tasting pale ale, you have a pal here. 5.0% - only at Fisher.

SL Brewing - Castaway Coconut PorterOn Nitro! Aroma of roasted malt & light coconut. Oh baby! A light touch with the coconut creates an exquisite combo with coffee-esque roastiness. The nitro conditioning is velvety smooth & just helps this porter disappear in moments. Another Mikey Likey! 5.0% available at SL Brewing/Squatters

Stormbreaker - Steambreaker: Exclusive to Beer Bar in SLC. A nice toasty steam beer. Light malt that not too biscuity, combined with a good dose of floral/piney hops. It’s overall super crushable & an excellent steamer/Cali Common. 5.2%

Stormbreaker - Liquid Hot Enigma: Um yeah, this features Enigma hops. Another Cold IPA for ya. This one is much lighter & drier than the previous. It’s more traditionally “lager”. Light malt profile & body with a tasty blend of herbal & citrus hops. I dig it. It’s a wee dry for princess Mikey though. Love the name! 6.3% - Only at Beer Bar.

New Beer Friday 2/7/25

Happy New Beer Friday. We have a round selection of beers this week, with most of the food groups represented.

Ever had a Pocket Sake? They're new from Utah's Tsuki Sake and today we're going to get into them with Jill Watanabe and Ty Eldridge from Utah's home base for Sake. The Beer Nerd's Radio pub goes live at 2pm today (Friday) on 99.9FM KUAA.

RoHa - Snow God IPA: This West Coast IPA features Galaxy, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops. Galaxy, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops. Big West coast DIPA hop profile with a dry-hopped herbal bite. You can tell there’s a lotta leafy parts here bringing it to an almost dank place. Finishes dry and doesn’t feel 8.0% - Available now at RoHa Brewing Project.

Uinta - The Juice is LooseFits the name. Super fruity with a solid malt backbone. Little to no bitterness with hop profile that throws out peach, berries and light citrus. Prickly co2 which keeps it from feeling too sweet. Some toasty crackers towards the finishes. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Red Rock - Ono (Coffee and Coconut): Aged in bourbon barrels 24 months and conditioned on toasted and raw coconut. Jack Mormon Coffee provided a blend of Typica, Catuai and Caturra coffee beans. The barrel for the most part is subtle giving the the wonderful coffee blend plenty of room to shine the coconut is also subtle. There's a lot happening here, but it all seems to come together nicely. 10.5% - Available today at all Red Rock locations.

Proper - Kentucky Common: Nice and toasty up front. It’s not without a bit of caramel malt, but the two jive well. I don’t know the Ky Style as well as the Ca style, but this is an overall great beer. Reminds me of a more malty Kolsch. Absolutely crushable, anytime of the year. 5.0% - Available at Proper Brewing.

Proper - 1984: This American lager: Some adjunct flavors, mostly corn with some biscuit and herbal/floral hops. Bright co2 - great light lager. 5.0% - Available at Proper Brewing.

Proper - BBC ESBNice malt profile. Slightly lighter body for a lighter ale. Good amount of caramel-like malts with a medium amount of floral hops. This would kill on nitro! 5.0% - Available at Proper Brewing.

Proper - Cold and JuicyNice. Kinda spicy melon with some light citrus peel. I like the overall profile. It’s light but the hops are quite tasty. 5.0% - Available at Proper Brewing.

Melvin - Tues x 4: Crushable Session IPA version of the O.G. 5.0% - Found at Slackwater, Dick n Dixie's, Handlebar and many other beer pubs around the area.

Melvin - Blacksaw - Black Cold IPA: The winter beer you've always wanted. 5.0% - Found at Slackwater, Dick n Dixie's, Handlebar and many other beer pubs around the area.
