New Beer Friday: End of June Edition

There's no better way to say, adios to the month of June than with a little New Beer Friday action. It's not a massive NBF but it will satisfy. Today's beer meme is dedicated to Kirsten, who doesn't drink alcohol but loves her some New Beer Friday.

Oskar Blues Fugli - If you're not familiar with Yuzu and Ugli fruit, think Passion Fruit and that'll give you an idea of what's going on here. The Yuzu and Ugli fruit are subtle and just add a enough sweetness to balance out the bitter hops. 5.8% ABV @ Bayou

Upslope Citra Pale Ale - Orange peel pretty much dominates this beer. There is some hop bitterness and the malts are subtle, but if your not into orange peel? you will be sad. If you're a fan of Citra hop you won't taste 'em here. Not too bad for a fruit enhanced Pale Ale. 5.8% ABV

Sierra Nevada 3 Weight IPA - This new beer from Sierra Nevada was brewed especially for our market with input from local beer industry insiders, including Beer Bar's Rich Noel and Duncan Burrell. The Boys actually went to the Chico Brewery and help design the beer. The malts are light and somewhat cracker like. The hops have a dankness to them along with some citrus smack. Right now it's just on draft at Beer Bar, but it will start popping up in grocery and c-stores [12oz. bottles] in the coming weeks. 4.0% ABV

Strap Tank Dampfbier - This one is akin to steam beer. Lots of toasted malts, biscuit caramel. hops are mostly piney and herbal. The big difference here is the banana/clove flavors that you get from the yeast. A nice "change of pace" beer. 4.0% ABV.

Don't forget about tomorrow's SLUG Mag On-Tap Beerfest that's in support of the Utah Brewers Guild. I'm hearing there will be a DUI Blitz tomorrow, PLEASE USE PUBLIC TRANSIT.

Slainte!

SLUG Mag on Tap Happens this Saturday

This Saturday is SLUG Mag on Tap - a beer festival designed to celebrate SLUG Magazine's 10th Annual Local Beer Issue as well as being a fundraiser for the Utah Brewers Guild. This festival will take place at the Gateway and will feature only locally produced beers and ciders - both high and low point.

The fest will feature 22 breweries pouring 79 beers from breweries ranging from Vernal to Zion. Booths will also be set up showcasing some of Utah's newest "in planning" breweries, to give people an idea of what kind of new suds they can expect in the coming months.

This will be an adults only shindig, so please leave the kiddos with nanna.

When: 2–7 p.m. at The Gateway. Pre-sale tickets are available for $20 and will be $25 day-of. Each ticket includes 3 sample tokens and a full-sized commemorative mug. No chairs, coolers, umbrellas, strollers, wagons, dogs or tents are allowed. I have a feeling the Gateway's Fountain will be highly utilized. RSVP to the Facebook Event here.

Note: Front Runner and Trax are excellent option to get you to and from the fest.

  Prost!

Half Assed New Beer Friday

If you're not familiar with my day job (why would you), Fox13 News pays my bills. Basically I'm a camera money and my jungle this week is in Panguitch, Utah covering the massive wildfire out here. The interwebs has been scarce out here and since I managed to find a patch of WiFi, I thought I'd try and get some New Beer Friday info out to you.

Hoppers El Norteño - This light colored lager is influenced after the great brewing traditions brought to Mexico by the Austrian and German immigrants. Lighter in color than the Viennese amber colored lagers brewed in Mexico, it stays true to the art of crafting a clean crisp refreshing lager. Made from North American grown Pilsener malt, Vienna malt and a small amount of corn, floral German Hallertau Mittlefräh hops, and a Mexican Lager yeast. 4.0% ABV

Lagunitas Dark Swan - Mikey no try this wild ale. 8.7% ABV @ BeerHive

Stone RuinTen - Mikey no try this Triple IPA. 10.8% ABV @ BeerHive

Stone Ghost Hammer - Mikey no try this IPA 6.7% ABV @ Bayou, BeerHive

Bohemian Brewer's Stache Copper Lager - Pours a bright deep copper color and has aromas of toasted bread and biscuit that lead into a caramel malt backbone with a touch of smoke and roast in the finish. Perle hops lend a spicy balance to the array of malts used in Bohemian's new unique lager. While medium in body, this full flavored lager is a delightful alternative to the typical beers of summer. 4.0% ABV @ Bohemian

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 6/16/17

We have a broad choice of flavors for this week's New Beer Friday. We have a Bock, an Amber, a DIPA and a Belgian style Pale Ale. Plenty to keep your tongue occupied.

Stone Enjoy by 7/4/17 - This version has a nice nose of orange, lemon, peach and caramelized sugar.
The taste has bitter grapefruit peel and fruity malts. Lots of citrus here. Bitterness dominates here. Was expecting more tropical fruits based on the nose but it's adequately fruity. Dry and bitter finish. 9.4% ABV @ Beer Bar, Dick n' Dixies

Brewery Ommegang Bend the Knee -  This is the latest in Ommegang's Game of Thrones series of beers. The nose is floral and spicy. The taste starts with fruity and spicy yeast along with a good dose of honey. Peppery notes and coriander come next with some vinious orange and lemon. Bitter finish. This not my favorite style of beer but I found this pretty enjoyable. 9.0% ABV Bayou, Beer Bar

Desert Edge Hoppy Amber - The name says it all. This is an unfiltered amber ale featuring Simcoe, Centennial, and Wai-iti hops in the kettle and dry hopped with Mosaic. A nice toasty, caramel malt flavor balances the bright citrus from the hops for a small beer with big flavor. 4.0% ABV @ Desert Edge

Lagunitas Lagunator - I missed out on this one. This is a Bock, so look for a malt forward beer with a moderate amount of hops. 7.7% ABV @ DABC

See anything that I missed? Please share!

We'll be discussing these beers and other local beer news this afternoon at 3:30pm on KBER 101, with Mick and Allen

Cheers!

Great Basin Brewing Coming to Utah

Nevada’s oldest craft brewery is will soon be bring their beers to the beehive state. Great Basin Brewing Company, maker of beers like Ichthyosaur "Icky" IPA and 385 Scytale Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout will be debuting a handful of their Reno made beers to bars and restaurants along the Wasatch Front and Back.

Opening in 1993, Great Basin became the go to place for beer in the Reno/Tahoe area. To help with rising demand of great local craft beer, Great Basin opened the second location in Reno in July 2010 -  Great Basin then opened their Taps & Tanks location in 2012 as a production facility and taproom.

It looks like all the deals have been signed, well probably start seeing some of their beers in the coming months. Stay close for their debut locations.

Cheers!

Coming Soon: Proper Brewing's Revenge

There's been a drought of sorts in Utah's beer community - an info drought. For some reason there just not a lot happening in our corner of the beer universe, hopefully that's coming to an end soon.

To fill the void, I did come across this new beer that's coming from Proper Brewing Co. This is their Revenge Double IPA. This beer looks to be a hop bomb, that will likely contain a variety of hops. No word yet on when it will be released, but trust I'll fill you in soon.

Cheers!

Oakshire Citrafonix - Haven't tried this one yet. it's described as having deep citrus zest and piney hop nose. It is a light bodied American Pale ale with a balanced bitterness and a mildly tangy finish. We used a mélange of citrus including, orange Peel, lemon peel, lime peel, grapefruit zest, and a splash of grapefruit juice in both the kettle and the fermenter to give a citrusy fruit character that perfectly compliments the American hops. 5.5% ABV @ Beer Bar

Oakshire Sun Made Cucumber - Haven't tried this one yet. 4.0% ABV @ Beer Bar
