New Beer Friday: A Beer is No One - Edition

There's quite a diverse crowd of beers this week. Plenty to keep a faceless man, well... um..."faced".

Samuel Adams Nitro Coffee Stout - The nose has nice espresso and roasted malts with a bit of dark chocolate. The tastes starts malty sweet with dark roast coffee and a bit of toffee and cocoa. Nice and creamy in the mouth, thanks to the nitro. Tasty. 5.8% ABV @ DABC, Bayou

Samuel Adams Nitro IPA - Pours a clear gold honey hue with a good two fingers of nitro head. The nose has subtle citrus hops. The taste light with grassy and citrus hop along with muted malts. Finishes fairly bitter and dry. Creamy mouthfeel. 7.5% ABV @ DABC, Bayou

Deschutes Pinot Suave - Pours black and opaque with little head. the nose has Port wine, prunes and alcohol. The taste is more mellow that the aroma, There are tons of tart dark fruit - like prune, dates and current. The wine notes from the barrels are very apparent and add a nice vinous tartness. Notes of char and dark cocoa round out the back. finishes slightly tart and dry. It's listed at 11.2% - mine listed it at 11.8% ABV. @Beer Bar, BeerHive

Coney Island Hard Orange Cream Ale - It's what you'd expect from a cream soda, very creamsicle-like, with a little alcohol bite. Best in small doses. 5.0% ABV @ Bayou, DABC

Samuel Smith's Organic Apricot - Not tried this one yet. I imagine there's apricot flavors somewhere in there. 5.1% ABV @Slackwater

What did I miss? please share!

Cheers!

Bohemian Helles Bock

This morning we have a your first preview of a new limited edition beer from Bohemian Brewing Company. BoHo's Helle Bock will be a 6.9% ABV lager that will be available at Bohemian's beer store in the coming weeks. Helles Bocks are lighter in color than traditional Bock Biers and have a much more assertive hop profile. They are typically made for Spring consumption - which is perfect, because I understand that we are in the midst of Spring.

Stay close for it's release date.

Utah County's Return of the Brewery

I write about beer a lot, but my day job has had me working in TV news for the past 26 years. It's always a pleasure when I can merge my love of craft beer and work. Luckily, my management at Fox13 saw something special in my latest project when the gave the reigns to write and film this story on Strap Tank Brewing Co. It's the first brewery to set up shop in Utah County since the 1880s. and from what I've seen, it looks to be a destination brewpub. The video is at the top of the page. I'll leave it up for week or so -  I'd love to hear your comments.

Cheers!

Squatters ~ Lucky Number SMASH -Not tried this yet. My pal, Craig described it as having a clear straw golden with a medium sized creamy white head, lots of lacing. Aroma is fruity, doughy and oranges. Flavor is fruity, pils malts, citrus, dry finish. This is very good. Light with lots of flavor. Served on the Nitro handle. 4.0% ABV @ Squatters Downtown

Epic ~ Brett Pale Ale - This beer is an nontraditional Pale Ale fermented with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis, a unique “wild” yeast associated with the Brussels region of Belgium. The complex aroma combines pine, dandelion, hay, and wool. As a counterpoint to the aroma, the taste is bright and sharp with tangy orange-citrus and spice with underlying hints of dark rye and crust.4.0% ABV @ The Annex

Epic ~ Utah Session Series Orchard Farmhouse Apple Ale - This new addition to the Utah Session Series highlights the bright sweet, bright flavors of apples, oats, and barley with a crisp dry finish that lifts quickly off the palate. 4.0% ABV @ The Annex.

Zion Canyon ~ Pomegranate Sour Ale - Sounds tasty and it debuts today. If anyone tries please share your thoughts. 4.0% ABV @ Zion Canyon's Brewpub.

Boulevard Brewing ~ Love Child #7 - Yeah, it's finally here! The nose is sour with malt, tart cherry  and funky wood.. Taste is much the same with sour unripe cherry, acidic, and funky yeast flavors. Finishes dry boozy and acidic. Not their best vintage, but it's still pretty good. 9.2% ABV @ BeerHive

American Craft Beer Week: Nation-Wide Toast!

There is a special Nation Wide event happening today for American Craft Beer Week. If you're able, please consider joining in! Information follows.

Thursday May 19

RedRock Brewing
 Nation-Wide Toast!

Join Red Rock Brewing as they participate in Craft Beer Week's National Toast - an event where the whole nation salutes our favorite beverage. The official beer of the Nation-Wide Toast is the specially produced "The Biggest Small Beer Ever Made". This beer was made specifically for this toast - it will happen this evening at 6pm (mountain) - 8pm (eastern) at all RedRock locations.

We believe it’s a damn shame big beer still owns a lion’s share of the American palate. So we’re helping to put craft beer in the spotlight and give it the recognition it deserves by joining small and independent brewers from around the country in a unified movement to ‪#‎MakeSmallBeerBig‬.

Introducing "The Biggest Small Beer Ever Made—craft beer’s biggest collaboration in history."

Get yours at all Red Rock locations: Downtown, Fashion Place, Park City. Also, the Beer Store is pouring growlers of this special beer throughout the week for $6.50 per 64 oz. (plus $3 if you need the growler glass).

They're also featuring 'Daily Brewer's Select Pints' for just $2. Whoa!

Coming Soon: White Rainbow WHite IPA and Day 2 of Craft Beer Week

I found the label for this extremely happy looking seasonal ale that will soon be coming from RedRock Brewing Company.

White Rainbow will be a White IPA that is set to dial in at 6.2% and will be packaged in RedRock's familiar 500 ml. bottles. I know many of you are big fans of RRs Elephino Double IPA - the enjoyable hop profile that the brewers impart on that beer will likely translate nicely to this new edition to the family.

You'll know about it here as soon as it's ready for purchase.

It's day 2 of American Craft Beer Week - I hope your taking advantage of the events that have planned by our breweries. It's tough to hit them all, I managed to try the Bottle vs. Can sensory at Squatters last night - it was a lot of fun and I learned that I suck. Go Team Mikey! Thanks to Erika Palmer and David Mckean for the good time!

Here's what's happening on today's calendar.

The 2016 Mountain Brewers Festival and Craft Beer Week Begins

It's time for you to start thinking about getting your plans together for this year's Mountain Brewers Festival in Idaho Falls, Idaho. This is one of the biggest regional beer festivals in the west and one that many consider to be one of the best.

Previous years have seen upward of 70 participating breweries - pouring multiple beers from all over North America and Europe. Tickets this year are only sold in advance - they are available at Uinta Brewing, Bohemian Brewing and Rooster Brewing. You can also purchase online at www.mbbf.org - They are $30.

The festival takes place on Saturday June, 4th at the Sandy Downs Racetrack and is a 21+ event, so bring your I.D.s and leave the kids home. There are free shuttles to and from the hotels - you should use them.

Hope to see you there!

Also, today is the first day of American Craft Beer Week. I have the full week's schedule here - but will be posting the daily events with updates every day as well. Here is what is on tap for today.

New Beer Friday the 13th!

It's a Wee New Beer Friday this week. The two beers that I was able to scrounge up this week both hail from out of state, but are dialed in with the grocery store and tap handles in mind.

Upslope Belgian Style Blonde with Guava - The nose has honey and apple with some hints of clove. The taste starts a little vinious with some tropical flavors backing it up. Coriander and some doughy spices round out the back end. A pleasant beer with a fruity character that's not overdone. 4.0% ABV @ Grocery/C-Stores

10 Barrel Cucumber Crush - The nose is dry with lemon and pepper. The taste starts with lemon tartness which continues on to the end. Midway you get subtle cucumber mixing with wheat crackers.
It's a beer that doesn't seem like it should work, but it strangely does. Think summer salad. 4.0% ABV. @ Beer Bar

Pelican Dirty Bird IPA - I havsn't tried this one yet. It's described a being mildly sweet with caramel, mild hop bitterness with a shade of resin and a nice hop flavor. There's tangerine, pine a little grapefruit present as well. 6.5% ABV. @ The Bayou

Don't forget New Beer Friday continues this afternoon on KBER 101 at 3:30pm with Mick and Allen.

I've added some new events to the Craft Beer Week Calendar. There will likely be more coming so keep checking back.

Ritual Brewing Coming to Utah

Ritual Brewing out of Redlands, California has inked a deal to start sending their suds to the Beehive State. Ritual is a production brewery that concentrates on distribution and has a dozen-plus beers in their portfolio - including multiple takes on IPAs, Stouts and Belgian styles.

I got to meet co-owner, Steve Dunkerken a few months back while he was visiting Utah. Steve spends a lot of time in Salt lake, he tells me and would like to share his beers with his new found friends along the Wasatch Front.

Look for Ritual beers to start popping up at better beer bars in the coming weeks - then to DABC Stores.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/6/16

New Belgium ~ Heavy Melon - Pleasant watermelon flavors that are almost at Jolly Rancher levels. Lime comes next adding some balance to the sweetness. The finishes is quenching and fruity. If you have a sensitivity to cucumber these watermelon flavored beers my remind you of just how closely related these two gourds are. 5.0% ABV @ Slackwater

Proper ~ Leisurebrau India Vienna Lager - The nose is floral, grassy with some dry cracker aromas. The taste is bitter up front, with pithy citrus peels, grass and pine. Cracker-y malts with some mild caramel sweetness provides a nice bed underneath. This is a very hoppy lager forward with a strong bitterness throughout. Probably my favorite new brew from Proper Brewing. 5.0% ABV @ Proper Brewing, Beer Bar

Squatters ~ El Niño - Haven't tried this yet. This unfiltered Mexican style lager. 4.0% ABV @ Squatters

We will discus these beers and other beer related topics this afternoon on KBER 101 with Mick and Allen at 3:30pm.

Cheer!

Accelerator IPA's New Look

Soon you'll be seeing this bright new label adorning bottles of 2 Row's wonderful Accelerator IPA. This new look definitely has more presence and fits theme of the beer better. These labels will be popping up in the next couple of weeks.

If you haven't tried this yet it's worth your time. Pours a light amber with a large collar of foam. The nose was very sweet with big plunges of tropical/citrus fruits. The taste is much of the same. Some mild spicy hops with more tropical fruitiness. Malts balance nicely. The finish is semi dry and super clean. The body is thin to medium, with great carbonation giving it a light creaminess. 7.0% ABV

It's Cinco de Mayo, get out of your comfort zone and find a nice Mexican style lager to enjoy today.

Salude!

May the Fourth - Star Wars Beer Pairings

Watch some Star Wars - drink a fine beer. That's your assignment for today. I think I'll be pairing 2 Row  Brewing Company's Nemesis Pale Ale with The Empire Strikes Back tonight. What's your pairing?

Epic Release Los Locos for Cinco de Mayo

Thursday is Cinco de Mayo. To celebrate Epic Brewing will be releasing their Los Locos Mexican Lager at The Annex and at Epic's Salt Lake City "Tapless" Taproom. There will be $2 10oz pours (while supplies last) or you can snag Growlers for $16 + $6 deposit (brewery only). If you have your empties be sure to exchange them.

This isn't the typical Corona-esque, Mexican lager that you're used to. The addition of lime and sea salt really sets this summer lager apart. You'll be able to find Los Locos in the coming months at DABC stores, Epic's bottleshop and the Annex.

Salude!

The Shorter Porter from 2 Row

Here's your first look for 2 Row's porter. The Porter was originally released as a seasonal beer using a collective label design. Along with  the new label a new name, Shorter Porter. I imagine you'll start seeing these labels hitting the street when during Shorter Porter's next rotation.

The nose has rich roasted malt, coffee and light chocolate. The flavors are similar, but not quite as sweet as the nose. Dark roasted coffee, roasted and blackened malt, smoky notes and a touch of toffee. The body is medium/full and the carbonation is prickly. 7.1% ABV

Cheers!
