Welcome Toasted Barrel to Utah's Craft Brewing Community

That's right, this morning Sage and Lynn got the official okie-dokie from from the state's beer mafia just a couple of hours ago and are now making wort. The Toasted Barrel Brewery is Utah's 26th independent brewery and it's 31st all around beer production space.

To get things started Toasted Barrel will hit the ground with a few IPAs and a saison. Barrel aged beers will be going into wood soon after. Utah's next brewery on deck looks to be Saint George Brewing Company in you guessed it, Saint George. They will likely go online later this year.  Big congrats to Sage and Lynn!

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/25/18

It looks like an all local New Beer Friday and I'm confident that you'll find something for every taste this week.

2 Row Chasing Haze: It looks like OJ. The nose is super aromatic and fresh with citrus, mango, papaya and melon. The taste opens with clementine, mango and overripe cantaloupe. It's super juicy but not overly sweet. Finishes dry with a subtle orange and grapefruit peel bitterness. Probably one of 2 Row's most well rounded hazy IPAs. 6.5% ABV. Available at 2 Row, Beer Bar, Dick n' Dixie's and The Bayou.

2 Row Dubbelicious: The nose is malty sweet with a hint of clove. The flavors here a burnt caramel, some toffee and bubblegum. Very little in the way of hop bitterness and alcohol. I really loved this one. It kinda reminds me of an old English ale with Begian yeast. The lower ABV really drives up the beer's drinkability factor. 6.7%. A very limited run on this one! Available at 2 Row and Beer Bar.

Bohemian Lagerpalooza Best of Show Pre-Prohibition Lager: This beer was developed by award winning home brewery Sasha Taddie and brewed in collaboration with Salt City Brew Supply and the fellas at Bohemian. It has an aroma of malt and cereal with some earthy yeast notes. The hops Hops are earthy, grassy. The taste is bready with dry crackers, red apple skin and Cheerios. Backing it up are  leafy, grassy, and herbal verdant hops. BoHo only brewed about 80 cases, don't wait! 6.0% ABV. Available at Bohemian

Roosters Limited Release Double IPA: Fresh hops dominate with grassy and floral bitterness. The malts have a butterscotch perfume. Big malt sweetness opens the show mostly floral and pine to counter. A hint of citrus in the back. Finishes semi dry. This seems like more of a throwback IPA; typical to the early 2000s. 8.0%. Available at Roosters Ogden/Layton.

Fisher Galaska Pale Ale: It has a nice peachy hue with a lot of citrus peel on the nose. The flavor is also very citrus like with a good dose of citrus pith. It tastes like it was actually made with citrus peel. in reality it's all Galaxy and Denali hops. This beer won't be tapped until later this afternoon and the name listed above may or may not be correct. 4.0%. Available at Fisher.

Zion Paradox Session IPA: This isn't exactly new but it's relatively new to SLC. The aroma has citrus, pine and grass. The taste has toasted malt with a touch of light caramel up front. The back end is all hops - full of grapefruit peel and pine. This is a super crushable session IPA. 4.0%. Available at Zion Canyon and Beer Bar.

Squatters Black Rifle Coffee Cream: The nose has biscuit malts and coffee. The flavor follows with an almost nutty café cream sweetness. The coffee flavors are nice and fresh. 4.0%. Available at Squatters Brewpub.

Cheers!

Along with these we also have a shload of sour beers to talk about; combine all this with Craft Beer Week and you have a damn full weekend. Check out the updated craft beer week calendar here.

Epic Oak and Orchard Strawberry Rhubarb: The nose has a strong, dry sourness that is masking a bit of  funky strawberry. The taste is berry tart with darker berries and some strawberry sweetness. Finishes bone dry. 6.9%. Available at Epic.

Kiitos American Lager: Light spicy herbal nose with an even lighter touch of bready to grainy malts. The taste starts light and bready with bitter, but mellow, herbal hops jumping in.  Some light yeast flavor and graininess in the finish. 6.0%. Available at Kiitos.

SaltFire Dirty Chai Stout: Releases 5/19 - 6.7%. Available at Saltfire

SaltFire Fury Kolsch: : Releases 5/19 - 6.0%. Available at Saltfire

SaltFire A Series of Singularities Idaho 7: Releases 5/19 - 6.9%. Available at Saltfire

SaltFire A Series of Singularities: Releases 2:  5/19 - 6.9%.  Available at Saltfire

The RoHa Brewing Project - Red Ace: Sweeter berry-like malts with hops that have a bit of lemon peel bitterness. 4.0% ABV. Available at RoHa.

Squatters Meteor Shower: This is being released on Sunday at Squatters' Brewer's Brunch. I'll have tasting notes later today at 3;30pm with Mick and Allen on KBER 101.

Talisman Anniversary Ale: I havn't tried this Belgian style ale aged in Pino Noir barrels. 9.5% Available at Talisman.

8 Wired Cosmic Chaos: This Sour Black IPA is a bit tart with cola, some raisins + chocolate, slight char with some orange peel bitterness. 7.5% Available exclusively at the Bayou.

8 Wired Fistful of Cherries: This Wild Ale has a nose of tart cherries, grass and vinious oak. The wine barrels are surprisingly pronounced  - pushing through the tartness. Tart cherries and Brett yeast complete the flavor profile. 7.6% Available exclusively at the Bayou.

8 Wired Gypsy Funk: I havn't tried this American style Wild Ale yet. 7.5% Available exclusively at the Bayou.

8 Wired Lord of the Atlas: This American style Barely Wine has a nose of Toffee, vanilla and booze. The taste is more toffee, with marmalade and bitter pine rounding it out. 12.0%. Available exclusively at the Bayou.

8 Wired Big Smoked Porter: Not tried this one yet. 6.2%. Available exclusively at the Bayou.

8 Wired iStout: I havn't tried this Russian Imperial stout yet. It's described as having roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavors which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. 10.0%. Available exclusively at the Bayou.

8 Wired Wireless Black IPA: Missed out on this one too. 6.2%. Available exclusively at the Bayou.

Amager/Mikkeller - Frederiksen Væsel Brunch: Collaboration blend with Mikkeller/Amager. A blend of Hr.Fredriksens (Amager) and Beer Geek Brunch Weasel (Mikkeller) - then aged in bourbon barrels. 10.7%. Available exclusively at the Bayou.

Amager/Crooked Stave - Chad, the King of Wild Yeast: This sour ale has a strawberries nose with lemon zest, and herbal hops. The taste follows with lemon zest, strawberries, and melon with a touch of herbal hops in the back. 5.0%. Available exclusively at the Bayou.

Melvin Your IPA: This is possible the most bitter beer I've ever had. The aroma is danky, dank, dank herbal grass. The taste follows with dank pine resin and herbal hops. It finishes bone dry. If you're looking for an anti-haze bro beer, this is the one. 7.1%. I had it at Beerhive.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/11/18

Ummm... we have a lot of beers to deal with this week; the majority of these coming from new breweries entering the market. Both Double Mountain and Odell breweries hit the Wasatch Front this week - with them comes a great variety of tasty new suds. Buckle up for a lengthy read.

Kiitos Rye Pale Ale:  Nice spicy rye with a lot of orange peel bitterness. Some lemon and pine in the finish. 4.0%. Available at Kiitos.

Kiitos North east Style DIPA: Lots of citrus, pineapple and maybe a bit of papaya. The taste starts out a bit sweeter and finishes with just a bit of an alcohol kick. Definitely more complex than its more readily available younger brother.

2 Row Barrel Aged Dangeraux: This is a great pairing of saison and chardonnay. This isn't a sour beer, but the vinious qualities and the estery notes from the yeast trick the tongue into thinking your going down that road. I really loved this beer. 10.4% - Available at 2 Row, Slackwater

Double Mountain Hop Lion: Dank pine resin, generic citrus flesh, some muddled tropical fruitiness. The taste is pleasantly caramel like with some orange and grapefruit citrus peel. There’s an earthy quality as well with a mildly dank, leafy, :and piney hoppiness. 6.7% - Available exclusively at Beer Bar

Double Mountain Pale Death: Aroma of tropical fruits and Belgian esters. This taste has tropical hops up front with the yeast's fruity esters melding with the malt sweetness. 9.3% - Available exclusively at Beer Bar.

Double Mountain Aging Experimental 9 3/4 Sour: stout 9.0%

Double Mountain Oak Aged Cider: apple brandy and whiskey aged 9.7% - Available exclusively at Beer Bar.

Double Mountain Devil's Cuvee Kriek: Bing and Vann cherries create a tart, fruity aroma with hints of leather and a dry funk. The flavor is of course tart cherries with a nice level of low PH tartness. It finishes with a spicy/funky Belgian yeastiness. 9.5% - Available exclusively at Beer Bar.

Double Mountain No Collusion: This Imperial Stout is full of char, licorice and mild dark fruit. The back end is fairly bitter throwing the whole thing off. It's okay. 10.4% - Available exclusively at Beer Bar.

Double Mountain The Eleven: This English style Barley wine is full of burnt toffee cocoa and vanilla with a hint of citrus peel. This is probably the best barley wine I've had in months. You need this in your life. 13.2% - Available exclusively at Beer Bar.

Odell Green Coyote: I missed out on this Berliner weisse with tomatillios. I'm definitely seeking this one out today. 5.2% - Available at the Bayou, DABC .

Odell 90 Schilling: This is one of those beers that put Odell on the map. This amber ale is mildly malt with a moderate dose of floral and piney hops. 5.3% - Available at Beer Bar, Beerhive, DABC, Dick n' Dixie's

Odell IPA: In my opinion, one of the best IPAs ever. Big orange peel and malt aroma. The taste is bitter citrus right off the bat followed by a nice dose of caramel and tropical fruits. 7.0% - Available at Beer Bar, Beerhive, Dick n' Dixie's, DABC

Odell Rupture: They call this a "fresh grind ale". Juicy aroma with lots of grapefruit, orange peel and crackers. The taste has a big dose of pine resin, mango, orange juice and grapefruit peel. has a lingering resinous finish. 6.0% - Available at the Bayou

Odell Drumroll: This unfiltered American Pale Ale is a solid, easy drinking beer with great tropical fruit notes. 5.3% - Available at the Bayou

Odell Myrcenary: This DIPA has a nose full of pineapple, grapefruit and pine. The flavor follows with juicy grapefruit, booze and pine.

Odell Loose Leaf: Found this on draft at Beer Bar. The nose is piney with grapefruit. The taste has mild grapefruit, thin malts and pine. Some tart citrusy fruits round it out. 4.0%

Full Sail Summa' Time Lime Lager: Missed out on this one. 4.5% - Available at DABC

Wasatch Coconut Curry Kolsch: Reminds me of a vague Thai curry dish. Pleasant doses of both curry and coconut. 4.0% - Available at Wasatch's PC Brewpub and the UBC's West Side Tavern

Brewery Ommegang GOT Hand of the Queen: Missed out on this Game of Thrones Barley Wine 10.7% - Available at DABC.

Tune in to KBER 101 today at 3:30 as we discuss all of these beers and other beer topics.

Cheers!
