New Beer Friday 3/28/25

Yup this week's meme, pretty much sums up the staff here at Utah Beer Industries (me). That being said, excellent flavors await you this week with a varied scope of ABVs and styles. Make the trip to your favorite haunt, or one that has been off your radar for a while. It'll be time well spent.

BoHo is back in Radio Pub this week as Beer Nerd Radio gets ready for spring with Utah's original lager house. Kelly Schaefer always delivers the Bohemian goods as beer nerds from all over Utah prep for the warm weather. Check us out at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA.

Ogden Beer - Shadow Empress: This new Imperial stout has an aroma heavy with dark roasted malts, with some char, molasses and vanilla peeking out. The taste has a good balance between the dark malts and the piney, earthy hops. There is a note close to cherry, along with the char and molasses. Also has chocolate, coffee, and slight vanilla. Slight bitterness at the end. Full mouth feel, with a very creamy texture. Not complex, but made very well for Ogden Beer's first stab at this style. 9.5% - Available now at Ogden Beer.

Ogden Beer - Anchovy Krush: This one is self explanatory. A session IPA with Anchovy and Krush Hops. What a combo! 5.0% - Only at Ogden Beer.

Helper - Japanese Rice Lager: We will do a live analysts on this one live on Beer Nerd Radio, today at 2pm. 5.0%

Bewilder/Slackwater - Czech PilsnerSuper dry and hoppy notes start-off this collab beer. The hops are the definite star of the show here. Some slight berry skin tanginess wayyy in the background, kinda Kölsch-esque, but it compliments the overall dryness of this lager. Malt profile is bready & toasty with Saaz hoppiness. A great lager a see a stein of this in my future today. 5.0% - Available only at Bewilder and all Slackwater locations.

UTOG - Bar DownMy first swigs of this Session IPA were so long, forgot how thirsty a warm day will make you. Hops are spot on just enough citrus peel, berries and herbal bite to make it sing. Worth snagging this freshie ASAP. 5.0% - Available at UTOG now.

UTOG - Anniversary Ale VI: Happy 6th Anniversary to UTOG! This barrel aged version of Redeye imperial Red Ale is well hopped. It’s starts nice and flowery with the whiskey barrel coming next. The base is malty, but not barleywine malty, more like IPA malty. The hops and barrel are neck-n-neck, with a good punch of alcohol rounding it out. Think: American-style, Barrel-aged Strong Ale. 10.3% - available at UTOG.

Talisman - Honey Badger: This was made with Honey from Talisman’s Family's Honey Farm. Very cool that both the Witbier and the Honey Cream Ale are both present at first swig. You get orange peel for sure, grains of paradise, then the honey and cream ale. Never had this combo before, it works quite well. Nice body too. 5.0% - Only at Talisman

Level Crossing's Space Oddity is back with a style change as the traditional NEIPA makes it move to the West Coast. Not much has really changed recipe wise. It was brewed with orange blossom honey and an outer space themed blend of Comet, Galaxy, Apollo, Ekuanot, Strata and Enigma hops. You get a very explosive aroma, full of citrus peach and pineapple. The taste follows with the addition of grapefruit pith and some hints of mango. the pith carries into the finish creating some lingering bitterness at the end. 8.8% - This returns for Level Crossing's Anniversary party on Saturday.

New Beer Friday 3/21/25

If you've never seen Duck Dodgers in the 24th and ½ Century, you have homework this weekend. I promise it'll be worth it. If you've never tried any of these New Beer Friday suds, you have homework as well. In some cases you can do both assignments at the same time.

Beer Nerd Radio reaches back into the wayback machine to visit a land before time. 2023 it was a far more innocent age - we were oblivious.... meh, never mind. Today we present a Best of Show from the radio pub. Steph and I hope you'll check it out.

And while I have you: fans of Beer Nerd Radio have noticed that our option to stream past episodes is gone. Station management is working on it. It's a casualty of our growth as KUAA modifies our website. We hope it will be back soon. I have approximately 88% of the episodes saved and I'm working to get them to you all in podcast form soon. It's a lot of work, but we're working on it. Thanks for continuing to tune in. -Mikey

Uinta - Ryan Murphy's Irish StoutNamed for Ryan Murphy, head of Uinta’s R&D and creator of this beer. Roasty aroma. Nice roasty taste too. Not far into ash or char territory, but just enough. Finish has some slight char, finishes clean. I don’t think this it a true nitro pour. More like low gas co2. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Proper - Blarney StoneNice roasty stout. It comes across as an amped-up version of a traditional Irish stout. Slightly charred, with a good dry finish. ABV isn’t too noticeable, would pair well with a peanut butter whiskey…. Because it did. 7.0% - Available now at Proper.

Proper - Juicy Boots (2025 Pink Boots Blend)Possibly my favorite Pink Boots blend IPA so far for 2025. Citrus, peach and melon dominate for the most part. The finish is dry, it that seems to be a part of this hop blend. Nicely floral & slight herbal finish. Give this a shot.

Fisher - Hidden Peak Pale AleThis pale ale features Cashmere hops. Look for a light bodied, big fruity aromatics and taste with a mild bitter finish to make this beer the perfect crusher after a day on the slopes. A portion of proceeds from this entire batch of beer will benefit the Todd Greenfield memorial scholarship. 5.0% - Available at Fisher.

Salt Flats - English Brown Ale: Nice malt profile, plenty of toasty grains with caramel-like sweetness. The whole package is quite nice. If I had a driver I would have made that a beer back to pair with a Bonneville Bourbon. 5.0% - Available now at salt Flats.

Red Rock Wit and WisdomKicks off with tangerine melon and kiwi that start to unpack as mango and berries creep in and join. Berries and tropical fruit showcase well in the middle as pineapple and tangerines weave in and out of frame and closes like it started. Another winner from Red Rock. 7.0% - Available now at all RR locations.

2 Row Coastal CollisionA malty IPA, straight outta the west coast IPA playbook. Lotsa citrus peel, some pineapple, peach & berries. At 11.1% there’s plenty of heat backing it up. It’s a beastly WC TrIPA.

Heber Valley - Yōtei: Missed this new Japanese Rice Lager. 5.0% - Available at Heber Valley Brewing.

Talisman - El Guapo Dorado: Missed this "Golden Mexican Lager". 5.0% - Only at Talisman.

Level Crossing - Fruit Bat (Peach, Mango & Cara Cara Orange): Missed this one yesterday. This is available on nitro and an additional keg with be added to the Co2 tap at the main brewery this weekend. 5.0%

New Beer Friday 3/14/25

Pink Boots beers be are slowly rolling in, and this week one managed to slip into New Beer Friday's "research" schedule. On top of that it's another diverse offering this week, including a ton of St. Patrick's Day themed suds at practically every damn brewery out there.

There's a new brewery on the horizon and Beer nerd radio has 'em in studio today (Friday). Wolf Dog's Derik DeBoard will be in to fill us in on all what's happening now and what to expect in the coming months. The Radio Pub goes live at 2pm every Friday on 99.9FM KUAA.

UTOG - Shreddin' Yeti: Missed this new his American Lager. 5.0% - Available at UTOG.

UTOG - Palm Tree Porter: Aged in Jamaican rum barrels, Palm Tree Porter this is packed with rich flavors of chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of smoke, all wrapped up in a smooth, dry finish. We crafted this porter to let the bold rum barrel character shine. 8.5% - Available at UTOG

Ogden Beer - Danger Pony: Missed this new Belgian-style Pale ale. 5.0% - Available at Ogden Beer.

Salt Flats - Fog Light: This is on the board as a Juicy IPA. It's mostly herbal aroma with some melon notes. Tastes the same more herbal/melon with some citrus way in the back. A nice IPA, but it ain’t "juicy" like the sign says. 5.0% - Available at Salt Flats and their restaurants.

Uinta - Good Luck Babe: Uinta's 2025 Pink Boots Beer is a Rye IPA and who loves a rye beer? This guy does! Great aroma, citrus and some coconut? Flavor is good too. More citrus with an herbal hop bite. That coconut is there too but closer to the finish. I’d like a lil more rye, but I could still crush a couple pints. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Uinta - Sinéad's Photograph: This Irish Red Ale is a damn perty beer. Lotsa Ruby highlights. Toasty grains and caramel up front. Hops seem fairly tradition, or maybe Cascade? Probably shoulda got a stein of this Irish Red. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Hopkins - The Hop, Belgian Pale Ale: Hopped with Chinook, Simcoe, Mosaic, Ahtanum, El Dorado, HBC 638, Idaho 7, Sabro. Some clove and malt in the nose. First swig has a tiny amount of clovy yeast , but the hops pushyou away from the clove notes. This ain’t my fav style, but I’m trying. The hop profile help overcome the yeast. If you like hoppy saisons? You’ll like this.

Hopkins - Orchard-House Fruited Sour (Key Lime and Guava): Even though the base beer has a nice medium tart base the Key Lime still pops, giving it a fresh taste. The guava has a tough time fighting its way through the tart onslaught though. That being said, I really enjoyed this sour. 5.0% - Available at Hopkins.

Chappell - Turning TrixMade with Trix “extract” this sour features no hops, just lemongrass. Super fruity, kinda reminds me of Smarties. There a mishmash of fruit flavors - just think about Trix berries or Smarties candy and it’ll all jive for you in this sour ale. 5.0% - only at Chappell.

2Row - Eclipse Eterno: I missed this new Dark Mexican-style lager. 5.0% On draft now at 2 Row.

New Beer Friday

There's plenty of New Beer Friday brews to get you through this snowy Friday. I'm Sure you'll find something to get you through the weekend.

Helper Beer is back. in the Radio Pub for an update. Hit us up at 2pm today (Friday) on 99.9FM KUAA.

Uinta - The Gust if a Thousand Winds: I’m not sure what style of pils this is. Probably WC Pils? It’s too busy in here to ask. It’s DDH, tap handle says “WCNENZ” West Coast - New England -New Zealand? Some melon, grassy, earthy & citrus hops with a toasty malt base. Tasty stuff. 4.0% - Only at Uinta

Uinta - Wyld Juicy: IPA: Toasty malt profile with some candy-like fruitiness. Somewhat berry forward. Doesn’t taste like an IPA much, more like a fruity pale. Wouldn’t call it “juicy” either. Maybe they’ll tweak it next batch. Meh. 5.0% - Available at Uinta.

RoHa - Pink Boots 2025 Dragon Fruit IPA: Available 3/8 (International Women’s Day): Dragon Fruit pops out front with some citrus & herbal hops sliding in. Nice bitterness - it’s not too strong but noticeable - balances out the dragon fruit well. 5.0% - Available at RoHa.

Salt Lake Brewing - Four Corners: This session IPA starts citrus and herbal with a hint of berries. Earthy too. Finishes clean & dry for the mist part - what I mean by that is that it’s fruity, with a minor lingering bitterness. Nice pale ale. 5.0% - Available at SL Brewing.

Fisher - Zumo's First Kiss: Zumo is a New hop to me. Kinda reminds me of Zappa. Big herbal & earthy profile with a tiny bit of cites peel in the back. Slightly bitter finish. 5.0% - Only at Fisher.

TF - The Pasture: A spontaneously fermented ale that's described by having Big notes of apricot and lemon. Funky in all the right ways. The malt character is soft and bready, while the natural terroir profile is sharp and citrus forward. There is a subtle oak character, a hint of clove and spice, but a ton of fruit and funk. A true labor of love and patience. 6.8% - Only at TF starting today.

Also this week, Maui Brewing entered the market for the first time you can some of their beers at Slackwater locations.
