Bewilder Brewing's dynamic brewing duo, AKA Steven Engel and Brian Best visit the radio pub, to discuss the changing landscape in Utah's beer scene. We'll also talk about their newest small batch barrel releases. Dial-us-in today (Friday) at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.Epic - Matsumoto Rice Lager: This beer was brewed and named in tribute to Salt Lake City’s sister city in Matsumoto, Japan. Brewed using Japanese rice and historical Japanese brewing mash and decoction techniques. The slightest hint of lemon in the nose. Palate-wise there’s a good amount of malt toastiness with a super clean dinner roll profile. Then it all dries out. Kinda like Rice Krispies but finishes with a light lemon-grass like hop profile. 5.7% - Available starting today at Epic.
Saltfire - Punch a Nazi: Citrus peel, grass & pine start it off. There’s some nice malt character backing it up too. The end basically rides an herbal hop slide til the end. Bitter finish but not lingering. Love the name!
Park City - Exit 145: This new West Coast IPA features Citra, Simcoe and Centennial hops. Look for a bright citrus aroma with herbal notes, light tropical fruit, and caramel malts. Tastes of floral, bright citrus, lemon, grapefruit, a little orange, light tropical notes, passion fruit, a touch of spice, and some caramel malt sweetness. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Very nice brew. Tons of flavor and a very reasonable 7.5% ABV. Refreshing, just what I needed.
Bewilder - The Notorious BDG: This limited run Biere de Garde was aged in a rye whiskey barrel that previously had bitters aged in it. Previous to that it held gin that was aged for 7 years. This blend of spirits creates a surprisingly fruity nose, notes of whiskey-lotsa fig and currant. Similar taste with the addition of bitters, but it’s not bitter. Make sense? Some of the gin starts to show next with juniper and oak rounding it out. Finish slightly herbal prob from bitters. The biters from the barrel really start to become more pronounced the more the beer warms. 10.4% - Available starting today at Bewilder.
RoHa - Born This Way Hazy IPA: Brewed to celebrate Pride Day. There's a great tangerine and nectarine profile. Probably should have called this Beervarine? Naaa. A solid flavor profile that just fires on all cylinders. Just a hint a bitterness to keep things from getting boring. Creamy overall and immensely drinkable. 5.0% - Available starting today at RoHa.
UTOG - Ales for ALS: This beer is part of a fundraiser project for Ales for ALS. Beer lovers from around the world coming together to end ALS through this unique hop blend. A portion of the proceeds from this beer will go to Ales for ALS. The hop blend for this year's release has Krush, Simcoe, Mosaic, HBC522 and HBC 1019.
Helper - Lime Gose: Missed this one. 5.0% - Available at Helper Brewing.
Hopkins - Dunkelweiz-up: This German-style beer, a is fusion of Dunkel and Hefeweizen, offers pleasant esters of banana and cloves from the weizen ale yeast, complemented by the sweet maltiness and chocolate notes. 5.0% - Available now at Hopkins.
