Fresh Cask Friday: KellerAlt

Today at Hoppers we have a single firkin for Fresh Cask Friday. 'Out of Bounds KellerAlt' is Brewer & Secret Agent Donovan Steele's traditional styled Altbier made with German Munich and pilsener malts. This particular version was, late hopped with German Hallertau Mittlefruh. Fermented initially at 58 F and left unfiltered for a secondary re-fermentation in the cask. It has a nice copper amber color, rich full flavor, 40+ IBU's, natural carbonation, and served directly from the cask.

Next week look for another version of the Altbier, this time with a bit of wood aging.

Last night's Barley's Angels Chocolate/Beer Pairing was a huge success. The all female event had ladies packed into the Beerhive's basement while wishful men sat sulking upstairs, cursing their damn y chromosomes. Some of us "tripods" muddled through as we had secret agents sneaking up samples of the cacao delights. Nice job on a great event ladies!

Cheers!

I spotted several bottles of Firestone Walker XVI Anniversary at the Foothill liquor store. $25/bottle.

Thanks Chris! I'm on it

Also, the new Samuel Adams Latitude 48 IPA 2013 - Mosaic hop brew is there. It's not the same as the Lat 48 we had before.

So does it say "Mosaic" on the label? I picked up a bottle of Latitude today--I'm assuming it's just the standard one...

Ed, It does say Mosaic in the copy on the neck label. At the Foothill store, they had the old version mixed in with the new Mosaic version, so they would be easy to mix up...but it does say Mosaic on it.

The beer was good, but I it isn't the best beer to showcase this hop. I feel that using Sam Adam's yeast and the blend of other hops in this beer, the Mosaic hops were a bit muted. It is not a bad beer, but I wish there was more hop character.

Awesome... Thanks, Chris. This bottle (from the 3rd West store) doesn't name any specific variety--so there you go.

Mosaic sounds interesting, so I was excited to try it... But maybe I'll still just have to make a batch with it ;)
