New Beer Friday 10/25/24

In this "Too Much Damn Beer" edition of New Beer Friday, we have the 2024 Big Bad Baptist release from Epic Brewing, Four releases from Proper Brewing, a trio from Uinta and a pair of newbies from Wasatch/Squatters. On top of that, there's a massive amount of Lambics, Spon/Wilds and Abby ales at The Bayou. Please plan you attack carefully.

Desert Edge's Matt Burdick returns to the radio pub on this week's Beer Nerd Radio. We'll catch up on what's new at one of Utah's oldest brewpubs while getting familiar with some of Burdick's newest creations. We're there every Friday at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA.

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Chocolate Covered Banana): Whiskey and banana aroma. More subtle is the taste. Banana starts it off with bourbon/rye second. Cocoa comes next it’s light and complimentary. The overall body is quite light, medium/light. Could get you into trouble if you’re not paying attention. 10.1%

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Old Fashioned): Whiskey and orange peel aroma. Taste starts with chocolate covered orange. It’s bright and citrusy. The overall mimic of the cocktail is pretty close. The whiskey/citrus combo rocks. The cherry gets a lil lost, overall a nice take of an Old Fashioned. 11.8%

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Cherry Bliss): Very cherry aroma. It’s very dark & maraschino-like. Tastes more like chocolate/cherry cordial. The cherry pretty much drives the whole beer. It tastes fresh & natural, but it IS the whole beer. 11.8%

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Salted Maple): Nice maple & cocoa aroma. Whiskey pops towards the end. Taste has less maple, but has a nice bourbon quality. Very smooth, the salt mostly provides balance and no real brine or biting flavors. Quite tasty. 10.1%

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Cinnamon Roll): Big maple AND doughy aroma. Taste is slightly more cinnamon forward. The base is full of cocoa & light whiskey. I like the overall profile and the coffee aspects represent mostly in the finish. Surprisingly, the alcohol is very well hidden. A nice example of a cinnamon roll like beer. 9.8%

Epic - Big Bad Baptist (Black Gold): Ending light? Not me. You can always count on me to go sideways on a big session like this. Epic’s premium barrel selection BBB brings a non-boozy nose, full of cocoa/coffee. Whoa, simple cocoa, cofffee, whiskey with light char & no heat. Sublime. 114.7%

TF - Three Sisters 2023 Reserve: Notes of cantaloupe and peach. This round is a bit more crackey. Almost white bread malt with a soft barrel character finish. 6.8% - Very limited amount, available today at noon.

Proper - Guav Ross: Guava aroma toasted grains. A nice approachable fruit beer. The guava isn’t in your face, but you get the drift the brewers were going for. Beer with fruit accents. Easy peasy. 5.0%

Proper - Concerning Hops: Nice citrus & melon aroma. Whoa, nice hop punch after that Dunkel. Great citrus, berry & melon wallop. The overall body is light, but it takes advantage of the hop bill. Quite enjoyable. 5.0%

Proper - Dunkel Buck: Very nice clarity & color. Toasty aroma with a similar taste. Full of toasty grains with a nice caramel base. Hop profile is fairly traditional & the overall vibe is spot on. Really loving this. Mikey Likey. 5.0%

Proper - Pineapple Wheat: This is not the the name this beer will eventually have, because it is yet unnamed. Nice pineapple character that's not to overpowering. Nice pillowy and toasty wheat base. quite pleasant. 5.0%

Wasatch/Squatters - Wolves of London: This English Power was made with Earl Grey Tea. Cocoa aroma, slight hint of herbs. Believe it or not the Earl Grey tea in here actually comes through the roastiness. It almost comes across as hops, but it all seems to work. 5.0%

Wasatch/Squatters - Snappy Buttons: Missed this Vienna Lager, should be on tap sometime today. 5.0%

RoHa - Brewer's Select (Zamboni Hazy IPA): An NZ Dream. Full of melon, citrus and some diesel up front. The malt adds some stone fruit and a slight herbal bite in the finish. Tasty NZ IPA. 7.0%
