New Beer Friday 7/25/25

Did you survive Pie & Beer Day? If not, a lil hair of the dog may be in order. Here's this week's list of newest locals to hit drafts and cans.

Beer Nerd Radio welcome Sam Sisk and Jacob Cobb fro TF Brewing. They're part of the dynamic team that keeps Beer Nerds happy with their award winning suds. Join Mikey and guest co-pilot Jamie Aslett today at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Kiitos - NZ Pils: This NZ pilsner features Motueka, Nelson Sauvin, and Riwaka hops. It’s super toasty. Berries & melon are out front with some citrus peel & caramel corn rounding it out. 5.0% Available now at Kiitos in cans and on draft.

Desert Edge - Rhinland Gold Kolsch: Toasty crackers, hint of fruity yeast sweetness. Finished crispy & dry. Tasty stuff. 5.0% - Available at Desert Edge.

Desert Edge - Fjord Explorer: A nice farmhouse ale that has a light phenolic yeast profile with light crispy malts that have an almost fruity character. 5.0% - Available at Desert Edge.

Ogden Beer - Activities Pils: This super crusher is made with Pils malt and rice with a hop bill featuring Vista. Look for nice melon, tropical and stone fruit flavors. 5.0% - Available at Ogden Beer.

Fisher - Velvet Waltz: Loves me some Nelson Sauvin hops! Nice bits of berry & tangerine. A tiny bit of melon rounds it out. Some Strata hops add an herbal bite & a slightly bitter finish.

Salt Lake Brewing - New Moon: The Alt/Dunkel has a nice toasty aroma, like dark bread crust. Taste follows with a light amount of malt and bit of black tea. Clean with a nice fry finish of grass & pine. Tasty!

RoHa - My Neck and My Bock: Dry and toasty. It’s quite nice, but it’s a wee dry for a Maibock. This would kill with some pecan pie! 5.0% - Available at RoHa.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 7/18/25

Happy New Beer Friday!

Beer Nerd Radio is excited to have Phil Chou, former Director of Brewing Solutions at Haas Hop Products join us in the Radio Pub. Phil's resume reads like an encyclopedia of the brewing arts and we're damn excited to hear his story. Join Mikey along with guest host Jamie Kearns (Kittos Brewing) at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Home Range - Crispy By Nature: This West Coast Pilsner is a light and crispy Pilsner with a unique hop character of peach, red apple, and a hint of bitterness.

Home Range - Crystal Visions: This English Golden Ale is served via Home Range's Beer Engine. Exactly what you want from an English ale in the summer.  A delightfully light malt forward ale with hints of light biscuit and a subtle orange character. Some might even say orange crumpet.

Proper - Green Tea Rice LagerOkay, just to be clear. This beer is sooo new it doesn’t have a name. So don’t give me any shit if you can't find it on the menu board. That being said, super crisp & clean. There’s an herbal component that likely the green tea. It jives well, and is absolutely crushable. Nice job! 5.0% Available at Proper.

Epic - Pie and Beer Day (Key Lime Pie)It may come across as a typical lactose sour, but it’s actually a cream ale base with a shload of Keylime. Look at the photo clearly shows very malty base(Vienna malt?) regardless, the amount of citrus combined with the cream ale wurks so well. No lactose in here if I failed to make that clear. 7.0% - Available at Epic.

Uinta - Woahhh: This amber lager has a good amount of toasty grain with a light caramel maltiness. It’s fairly hoppy with a lot of mostly pine & flowery bitterness. Finishes dry for the most part. Not too lingering bitter finish. Whoa! 5.0% - available at Uinta.

RoHa - All Hail the Ale: Missed this new DIPA, but we will profile it live on today's episode of Beer Nerd Radio. Check us out.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 7/11/25

We here at New Beer Friday Motion Pictures hope you have a super weekend.

In the radio pub today, we welcome Ryan Murphy to the KUAA studio. Ryan is the guy in charge of Uinta Brewing's Research and Development Department. Not a bad gig to have, eh? We'll get into what makes his job unique and how you can get your hands on some of his experimental beers. Beer Nerd Radio starts at 2pm sharp every Friday on 99.9fm or stream us here KUAA and you can even check out past episodes here at the BNR Archive.

Offset - Nothing But Numbers: Taking the DIPA base recipe from Nothing But Lasers, Connor swapped out the NZ hops and used nothing but experimental varieties that haven't been named yet. No one has ever used this hop combo and Offset won't be able to make it again either as two of these varieties never made it to full commercial production. Mostly hops NZH104 and HBC1019 were used and were followed by a large two stage dry hop of more 1019, a new variety called D5-055, and NZH105. Look for saturated flavors of over ripe tropical fruit, orange creamsicle, and bright lemon zest with even a hint of rum barrel from the 1019. Available at Offset, Found at The Bayou also - 8.0%

Offset - Manilita: This new single hop Pale Ale showcases a new hop variety called Manilita.

Manilita is still in an experimental phase, so very little of it is grown. Offset is part of the Freestyle Hop Research Collective which gives them access to some hop varieties before they make it to full scale production. Look for papaya and ruby red grapefruit aroma with hints of pink starburst candy. There are familiar flavors but they're hard to pick out. More customer research is required! 5.0% - Draft is available now at the brewery. Cans will be ready when the labels arrive. Call ahead

Proper - North West Pale Ale: This pale ale is well attenuated, resulting in a crisp, dry body with a very subdued malt backbone. Notes of grapefruit and pine dominate what flavor is there. It's a clean and technically sound beer, but it lacks the depth by itself. It would be a nice beer-back for a nice Rye Whiskey though. 5.0% - Available at Proper.

In other news: Our Mutual Friend Brewing out of Denver hit the market this week, with a quartette of IPAs look for OMF's Inner Light, Neon Nail, Time's Arrow and Stingray Jesus. So far I've just seen them at Slackwater and Beer Bar.

Cheers!

New Beer (Independence Day) Friday 7/4/25

Even though it's a holiday, the New Beer Friday assault team still shows up to provide you the best-ish weekly round up of new beers for you.

Though we show up, for New Beer Friday, we will be taking a break from Beer Nerd Radio this week. It's hard to find guests to play on a holiday, plus Steph and Mikey love having an extra day off. See you next week with a new show from the radio pub!

Salt Lake Brewing - Amburana ESB on Nitro: It says, “brewed with barrel aged malt”. I’m thinking the malts were aged in the Amburana Barrels? Regardless: this nitro ESB is on point. The Amburana is subtle w/ just a hint of nutmeg-like spice. Everything else is text book happiness. 5.0% - Only at SL Brewing.

Chappell - Tomorrow Problem: This Imperial Amber Ale comes across more like an Imperial Red Ale. There's a nice malt profile, that has some English ale copper influence. Well hopped and the ABV is well hidden. A nice Imperial English Ale. 9.0% - Only at Chappell.

Handle Bar/Saltfire - 7 Year Beer: Happy Anniversary Handle Bar! Sadly I missed this new beer. it's described as a IPA meets Shandy. 5.0% - Only at Handle Bar.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 6/27/25

Feel'n good about the choices you've made this week? You should be, it's not easy being you. A beer nerd like yourself deserves a fine ale or lager to close out the week. We've got a fine list of suds designed to make you strut or sway your way into the weekend.

What happens when whiskey, bitters and cider collide? The Beer Nerd's become "whiskey, cider and bitters nerds" on a special afterschool episode of Beer Nerd Radio. Sugarhouse Distilling's James Fowler and Rio Connelly of Scion Cider join Mikey and Steph in the Radio Pub starting at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA. or stream us here at KUAAFM.org/

Miss an episode of Beer Nerd Radio? we're streaming now at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556948953647

Grid City - 5th Anniversary Dry Hopped Saison: Im curious to try a saison hopped w/ Saaz, Nectaron, Nelson & Galaxy. It’s somewhat phenolic, but I gotta say, these hops give this a whole other dimension. Some peach & citrus for sure, combined with clove & a hint of berries. Malty & dry toward the end. Saisons hadn’t been my thing lately, but there’s enough happening here to take my mind off the peppery yeast. 9.5% - Available now at Grid City.

Kiitos - Fonio Fusion: Fonio is a West African grain, that is full of Lychee-like flavors. This is 50/50 Fonio and Pilsner malt. Citra and Vera hops drive it, so it’s absolutely citrus forward. From there it’s all American IPA. It’s actually quite tasty. This folio grain is perfect for IPAs!

Home Range - Don't I Know You?: Missed this new Hazy IPA. 6.7% - Only available at Home Range.

Offset/New Image Brewing - Menzo: This West Coast "Lie" IPA features Simcoe, Simcoe Cryo, Hollingberry, Centennial, Crosby CGX and Nectaron. It's a blend of some classic WC IPA hops, but selected for a depth of nuanced flavors that go beyond just hitting the high notes that these hops are known for. This beer combines the aromas of fresh hop harvest with notes of grapefruit, alpine conifer, peach ring candy and subtle cannabis. It's everything you could ever want from an IPA but with a gentler 5.0% ABV. Available at Offset and New Image Brewing.

Also, Hobbled Dog Cidery opens this weekend.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

Cheers!

Midsummer New Beer Friday 6/20/25

Happy Summer Solstice! Thank Thor that this is the longest day of the year, 'cause you're gunna need all that extra time to enjoy all of these wonderful beers that have come our way. Have an excellent weekend!

The Beer Nerds host another blind tasting in the Radio Pub. This Episode should be a lot of fun; because Mikey has decided to keep as much info from our guest tasters (Aaron Saxon and Mark Alston) as possible. The final reveal should be fun. Check us out today (Friday) at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA or stream us at KUAAFM.org/

Offset - Life Before Insanity: This West Coast Simcoe IPA is a collaboration beer was made with Cellarmaker Brewing and New Image Brewing. The three breweries used every form of Simcoe they could get their hands on. T90, Cryo, Co2 extract, Dynaboost, Hyperboost, and whole leaf were layered in staggering quantities at every opportunity. The best part is the T90 and Cryo lots were the hand selected lots from Cellarmaker and New Image. This is a Simcoe dream. This reminds me of why I fell in love with hop all those years ago. Strawberry, melon and citrus like I’ve not tasted since before COVID. A brilliant single hop WCIPA! Mikey Likey!  6.8% - Available at Offset, found at the Bayou.

Offset - Thiols Terps and Love: This new version was brewed with Offset’s Kölsch yeast. This is an NZ bomb. Crazy amounts of NZ Cascade, Peacharine and fresh Nectaron hops. This is complex. The terps and thiols lead with stone fruit and cannabis. Citrus peel is next. Too many flavors for…a 6.0% IPA. The body and experience here is intense. This fun to drink and it tastes expensive. It’s a full throttle sensory experience. 6.0% - Available at Offset, found at the Bayou.

Home Range - Good News Saison: This HR's house saison. Brewed with their in-house Saison yeast culture and locally grown barley from Cache County along with rye and oats all from Utah. Then aged in an oak foeder for way too long, and naturally carbonated with local Slide Ridge honey. Look for big notes of lemon zest on the nose, with undertones of spices like nutmeg and white pepper. Flavors of lemon curd, sourdough bread, and again some light spice which finishes things nice and dry. 5.0% - Only at Home Range.

Heber Valley - The Grunge: Missed this new IPA featuring Strata hops. 6.5% - Available at Heber Brewing.

Bewilder - Weizenbock (Aged on Amburana Wood): The name reveals it all. Once you get it out of the can your met with something that has bread crust hues. That “sweet wheat” lager base still shine as it did in the original version; full of banana and clove. Now amplified layers of nutmeg & cinnamon pop-out from the Amburana wood staves. This is an entirely new beer, full of rack spices and deep complexity. Crazy wood flavor! 8.4%

Salt Lake Brewing - Go Easy: This super session IPA features Citra and Mosaic. What else could you ask for? This one dials in at a quaffable 2.9% strength a perfect table beer.

Chappell - Craft Beer Sucks: Missed this new "pub ale". 7.0% - Only available at Chappell Brewing.

Scion - Piecycle: This new cider was made with Granny Smith apples, tart cherries, molasses, nutmeg, cinnamon and Star Anise. The color doesn’t scream, Granny Smith, apple. Once you get your nose into it, you can tell the color is from the spices added. This cider definitely has more of an autumn feel. Round and spicy. Might even do well mulled. Quite tasty. 6.3% - only at Scion.

This Saturday (6/21) in South Salt Lake, The Summer Shandy Fest is happening. This is a free to participate event, that is designed for bicycling, but you can make your way through it any way you want. Tour de Brewtah is putting this on and have partnered with all of the SSL breweries to develop their own spin on the Shandy, a classic, thirst quenching beer that incorporates fruit juice and is often served to cyclists out conquering the mountains of Europe during the summer. So, grab your friends, lube those chains and head out to any of the participating breweries to see what they've whipped up! You can get started as early as 11am.

Roosters is also celebrating 30 years on Saturday 6/21. The party goes from Noon to 4 pm
with a patio party next to the 25th Street location. look for games, live music, small bites, community partners, giveaways and more.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

New Beer Friday the 13th - 6/13/25

Friday the 13th may be considered to be unlucky, but New Beer Friday the 13th is lucky AF!

Beer Nerd Radio has a conversation with Jack Rabbit Brewing today (Friday) at 2pm. Where did they come from? Where are they? What kind of beers will they have? All excellent questions. And we'll get into it all, a little later on 99.9fm KUAA.

Uinta - Mimosa Super Nova: This has a sour base. From there it's all orange. The main flavors are lactic tartness combined with citric acid. These flavors duke it out for the most part and make it quite drinkable if you're into citrus. 5.0% - Available at Uinta.

Uinta - Sanchez's SnakePit: Mostly citrus & melon aroma - some berries too. Tastes more herbally up front. It’s well hopped for sure. The melon, citrus & berry come next, in that order. Tastes like there’s some NZ hops in there. Perty damn tasty. On the R&D handle. 5.0% - Available at Uinta.

RoHa - Mustache Mercury: Somewhat herbal, vegital & citrusy. Some berry notes back it up with a near dankness. There’s a lot of hops in here and it just dials-in at DIPA strungth. 8.1% Available at RoHA.

Offset - German Saaz: Missed this new lager. 5.0% - Available at Offset Bier.

Fisher - Zumo's First Divorce: Missed this new pale ale featuring Zumo hops. 5.0% - Available on draft at Fisher.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/30/25

Tired of those other beer release days leaving your body dazed and confused? Try New Beer Friday! Our patented weekend release schedule keeps you body primed for your weekend adventures.

You may also need something a little stronger. That's why Beer Nerd Radio has invited Salt Flats' Head Distiller, Trent Moore to join Steph and Mikey in the radio pub. Salt Flats has recently received international praise for their whiskey! we'll tell you which one this afternoon at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA.

Shades - Coyote UgliGreat citrus aroma, it’s vague but enticing. The flavor is basically Sunny Delight. A great citrus cocktail with a good amount of malt & citrus forward hops. The overall vibe is fresh & silky, with a great mouthfeel and ABV punch that’s not boozy. 8.0% - Available now at Shades.

Uinta - Liminal Space: This Thiolized Lager is super dank smelling, maybe grapefruit? A lil more fruitiness coming from the thiols in the taste. Berries? It’s still vague to me but it’s pleasant. Base is toasty with herbal hops. Overall, it's nicely crushable - yet chewy lager. 5.0% - Available at Uinta.

Uinta - Wasánjeles Familiar: This Mexican-style lager take on the WasAngeles lager seems to have a bit of corn added for that Cerveza feel. Kinda like it a lil more than WasAngeles. Add the lime and it's really tasty. Not exactly a “crispy boi” but it’ll do. 5.0% - Available at Uinta.

Fisher - Triticale Blues: This beer was made with Triticale, a grain that's kind of a mix between Wheat and Rye. Look for crackery and toasty elements, the whole thing finishes nice and dry. If you are a fan of American Wheat Beer, this is the one for you. 5.0% - Available at Fisher.

Chappell - Barrel Aged Series (Soak On - The First Date) I won't be here next week, so I'm giving you the info on this beer now. Look for it only at Chappell Brewing on FRIDAY JUNE, 6TH! This sour ale was made with White Miso, Yuzu And Ginger. It was aged in Sake Barrels.

Also of Interest: Chappell Brewing now has a bar license. So your beverage options just got a whole lot bigger over there.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/23/25

Whoa! So many diverse flavors are in store for you this weekend. The New Beer Friday "research" team, put in a ton of overtime to get you the best plan of attack for your weekend enjoyment. Also happening today Policy King's SLC Brewery opens for the first time at their new Central Ninth location. See you there!

Bewilder Brewing's dynamic brewing duo, AKA Steven Engel and Brian Best visit the radio pub, to discuss the changing landscape in Utah's beer scene. We'll also talk about their newest small batch barrel releases. Dial-us-in today (Friday) at 2pm on 99.9fm KUAA.

Epic - Matsumoto Rice LagerThis beer was brewed and named in tribute to Salt Lake City’s sister city in Matsumoto, Japan. Brewed using Japanese rice and historical Japanese brewing mash and decoction techniques. The slightest hint of lemon in the nose. Palate-wise there’s a good amount of malt toastiness with a super clean dinner roll profile. Then it all dries out. Kinda like Rice Krispies but finishes with a light lemon-grass like hop profile. 5.7% - Available starting today at Epic.

Saltfire - Punch a NaziCitrus peel, grass & pine start it off. There’s some nice malt character backing it up too. The end basically rides an herbal hop slide til the end. Bitter finish but not lingering. Love the name!

Park City - Exit 145: This new West Coast IPA features Citra, Simcoe and Centennial hops. Look for a bright citrus aroma with herbal notes, light tropical fruit, and caramel malts. Tastes of floral, bright citrus, lemon, grapefruit, a little orange, light tropical notes, passion fruit, a touch of spice, and some caramel malt sweetness. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Very nice brew. Tons of flavor and a very reasonable 7.5% ABV. Refreshing, just what I needed.

Bewilder - The Notorious BDG: This limited run Biere de Garde was aged in a rye whiskey barrel  that previously had bitters aged in it. Previous to that it held gin that was aged for 7 years. This blend of spirits creates a surprisingly fruity nose, notes of whiskey-lotsa fig and currant. Similar taste with the addition of bitters, but it’s not bitter. Make sense? Some of the gin starts to show next with juniper and oak rounding it out. Finish slightly herbal prob from bitters. The biters from the barrel really start to become more pronounced the more the beer warms. 10.4% - Available starting today at Bewilder.

RoHa - Born This Way Hazy IPA: Brewed to celebrate Pride Day. There's a great tangerine and nectarine profile. Probably should have called this Beervarine? Naaa. A solid flavor profile that just fires on all cylinders. Just a hint a bitterness to keep things from getting boring. Creamy overall and immensely drinkable. 5.0% - Available starting today at RoHa.

UTOG - Ales for ALSThis beer is part of a fundraiser project for Ales for ALS. Beer lovers from around the world coming together to end ALS through this unique hop blend.  A portion of the proceeds from this beer will go to Ales for ALS. The hop blend for this year's release has Krush, Simcoe, Mosaic, HBC522 and HBC 1019.

Helper - Lime Gose: Missed this one. 5.0% - Available at Helper Brewing.

Hopkins - Dunkelweiz-up: This German-style beer, a is fusion of Dunkel and Hefeweizen, offers pleasant esters of banana and cloves from the weizen ale yeast, complemented by the sweet maltiness and chocolate notes. 5.0% - Available now at Hopkins.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.

New Beer Friday 5/16/25

Excellent news! The New Beer Friday Party Plane was recently gifted to our readers by the American Temperance Society and boy are we excited. We can now airlift our readers to any brewery on the globe. But why would you go anywhere, when there's such a strong beer weekend ahead. Check out these new brews.

Also, did you know that Utah's first dedicated meadery is opening soon? Jeffery Walker of Mountain Meadery will be join us in the "radio pub" Friday to educate us about mead and how Mountain Meadery came about. check us out Fridays at 2pm on 99.9FM KUAA or stream us on KUAAFM.org.

Uinta - That Dawg In Me: Toasty grains, combine with citrus and melon up front. Next comes coconut? 🤔 woody and herbal hops. It wraps up with a firm bitter finish. Described as a “hoppy lager” on the R&D tap. 5.0% - Only at Uinta.

Uinta - Endankafication: This Imperial IPA was made with Pilsner and Munich malts and hopped with Strata Simcoe and Cascade. A big chewy nose - like me. The hops run the show, very much a WCIPA. Big citrus and pine flavors with an ample malty base. Great use of German malts! I really love how the brewers used German malts to recreate traditional “old school” crystal and 2 Row malt flavors. Nerding hard over here!!!! 8.9% - Available at Uinta

SaltFire - Devolved Amber: Dry aroma. Mostly floral/herbal hops. Taste has a lot of malt toastiness with light sweetness. On the edge of dry for an amber, but the dryness ups the drinkability. 5.0% - Available at Saltfire on draft.

Saltfire Series of Singularities - 2025 Pink Boots Blend: Great herbal start that pushes to citrus towards the end of the swig. A lil bit of pineapple pops - that’s soon overcome by a grassy herbal bite. I’m digg’n this un. 7.3% - Available at Saltfire.

Saltfire - Getts's Mojito BlondeThis Mojito enhanced blonde takes a great damn photo! Mint pops from the nose, with hints of lime. It tastes exactly like it smells, it’s not toothpaste, more Amalfi Lemon Sorbet with a sprig of mint. 5.0% - Available at Saltfire.

Shades - Send Temps Cold: This “Cold IPA” is herbal and citrusy at the same time. There’s definitely more citrus “twang” than herbaceous bite, but the overall profile is pleasant and it keeps your mind on the pint. 5.0% - Available at Shades.

Shades - Pineapple Upside Down Cake: Okay, big smoothie pineapple at first whiff - some pecan too. Damn, it is smoove. It’s all that’s described, nutty, pineapply and it is satisfying. It’s probably on the “smoothie” side of the spectrum. It offers a a nice dessert option that pops.

 6.5% - Available at Shades.

Shades - Spring Fever: Missed this grapefruit Radler 5.0% - Available at Shades.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing.
