New Beer Friday 8/20/21

It's a Utah Beer Festival weekend on top of New Beer Friday. There will be some local breweries debut stuff at the festival along with a bunch of new to the market beers, ciders, hard kombuchas and craft cocktails. The ticket go up in price tomorrow, so if you want to save a few quatloos, I'd follow this link for tickets.

Grid City - IPA #2: This new IPA features a variety of cryo-hops that include Cascade, Simcoe, Centenial and Galaxy. The aroma is mostly orange/grapefruit driven that heavy on with peel/rind. The taste starts similar with the addition of caramel malts and a good dose of pine wrapping it up. It has a long and substancial bitter finish.   7.8%

Squatters - U-DA-HO: This was pale ale was brewed with fresh home grown hops and Idaho Gem Hops. It starts herbal and grassy with some orange peel. The malt profile medium sweet with some nice cracker qualities. A nice wet-hopped pale. 5.0% - Available at Squatters, Squatters Airport pub and I believe the West Side Tavern.

Squatters - Melling’s Cream Ale: I missed this one, as it's being tapped today. This will be a classic English Cream Ale inspired by Stuart Melling, founder of Gastronomic SLC. 5.0%  - Available at Squatters downtown.

Bewilder - Mimosa IPA: This is a sour IPA made with Mandarina Bavaria hops, Cara Cara Orange, and Tangerine. You can tell when IPAs are dose with citrus juice because they really light-up the salivary glads. This does that nicely. With a medium/light tartness and fresh citrus.

Ogden River - Zone 3: Missed this citrus forward IPA. This is the second canned IPA from OG River. If you haven't had a chance to check these guys out, you really owe it to yourself. Hit them up at the beer fest. It's available in 16 ounce cans. Only at Ogden River Brewing. 6.9%

Talisman - Japanese Rice Lager: I love a nice, dry lager. Look for a soft biscuity aroma with similar flavors that are less sweet with lemony and herbal hops. I can't wait. 5.0% - Only at Talisman.

Heber Valley - Single Hop Series (Heull Melon): These hops have notes of strawberry and honeydew. They're a wonderful German varietal of hop that make a great IPA.  5.0%

Moab - Johnny's FrUTah: This berry forward IPA features a lot of tropical hop flavors, but it's the fruit that dominates the show here. 5.0% - Available at Moab, grocery and C-stores.

Hopkins - Friendly Introduction Pale Ale #14: This version  is brewed with locally grown and malted Solstice Mild Malt, then dry-hopped with Veteran’s Hop Blend (Idaho 7, Sabro, Mosaic, Talus, and experimental hop HBC 630). Citrus and stone fruit aromas and flavors are the highlight of this pale ale while allowing a delicate malty backbone with minimal bitterness and a dry finish. 5.0% - Only at Hopkins Brewing.

Hopkins - Pico Rico: Missed this new Mexican-style lager that features a beautiful but light malty profile with a delicate floral hop bouquet. 5.0% - Only at Hopkins Brewing.

RoadHouse Brewing - Set Break Belgian Wit: True to Roadhouse roots, this Wit is brewed with Belgian tradition in mind.  Spiced with ample amounts of coriander, orange and lemon peel and brewed with oats and wheat to provide the quintessential mouth feel and slightly hazy appearance.  This beer beckons for a lemon wedge as garnish and a basket of frites on the side. 5.0% - Found at The Pines

RoadHouse Brewing - OG Kush Pacific Sunrise Lager: This traditional Lager is hopped with a new, New Zealand grown varietal called Pacific Sunrise. Notes of fresh passionfruit and pineapple. This is the best of both the IPA and Lager worlds in one beer. 5.0% - Found at The Pines

RoadHouse Brewing - Dad Bod / Dualistic Axiom: This is a traditional English Style Bitter - the original session beers. A beautiful light ruby hue is formed by the use of traditional English malts which also impart a medium bodied, malt forward beer. Don't let the word Bitter fool you - the hops are present just enough to balance out the malty sweetness. 5.0% - Found at The Pines

RoadHouse Brewing - Family Vacation: This ale is approachable, delicately hopped and brewed with local malts.  Light in color and crisp in flavor, this vacation in a can is a year-round thirst quencher with just enough "oomph" to get you holiday dreaming in no time. 5.0% - Found at The Pines

RoadHouse Brewing - Trout Whistle Pale Ale: Sometimes when the fish aren't biting, you just give a whistle and things turn out alright.  Like the fickle dancing incubus, this pale ale confounds.  Pungently tropical, a bit cantankerous. 5.0% - Found at The Pines

RoadHouse Brewing - Highwayman Pilsner:  A classic German-style pilsner created for swiggin' or sippin'.  Crisp with hints of grass, sweet bread dough and balanced hops, this sessionable 110 calorie pale lager tastes like a cool spring morning in a glass.  Brewed in memory of our friend Joe Casey in reverence to his passion and spirit. 5.0% - Found at The Pines.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 8/12/21

The incomparable Loretta Fudge was commissioned to create a sound track for our upcoming and untitled New Beer Friday documentary. Sadly, the "Fudge-meister" was involved in what was described as a "bloody flautist incident" while touring in Uzbekistan with her band, Stirring Soup. The Fudge family has gone dark and is no longer taking my calls in regards to her music catalog. Until I hear from her estate, I'm offering up these tasty new Friday beers to placate you until the project resumes. #FingeringandPrayingForLoretta

TF - Where's Barry:  Tons of pineapple & mango in the nose. Taste follows with a big dose of pineapple, mango & passion fruit. This beer has a tart base, but it’s hard to tell where the tart fruits start and the sour beer begins. There’s lactose, but it’s only enough to cut the more acid parts of the pineapple. The finish is puckering & you can really feel it in the back of your jaw. 6.8%  not vegan friendly

Epic - Munich Mayhem: I think this may be the first Märzen of the season, which is fine by me, I love those damn lagers. It pours a clear amber with copper hues. It smells of dark bread, nuts, spice, and a whiff of caramel. The taste is sweeter than the smell with abundant caramel, bready malt, nuts, spice, and a slight raisin fruitiness towards the end. It is medium-bodied with pleasant carbonation, and the alcohol is barely noticeable. Overall, it is a delightful Marzen that is perfect for summer drinking or on a crisp autumn afternoon. 5.0% - In 16 ounce cans, only at Epic Brewing, starting today.

Talisman - Anniversary Ale: This saison was aged in Pinot Noir barrels. Look for notes of white grape, pear and oak. Of course it will have all of the spicy yeast character you'd expect from a saison, with some bubblegum and clove. This one debuts today. Only at Talisman.

Level Crossing - Honey Rye: This has a nice unfiltered honey color with some musty rye and orange peel aroma. The honey comes through very nice and it works well with the rye. It’s quite flowery & botanical. Can’t tell if it’s the honey or the hops. Definitely some orange peel essence in the finish. 5.0% - A small batch, only at Level Crossing.

Fisher - Space Gold: Nice aroma of mostly tangerine peel and pine. Taste-wise There's great rye character with light melon, berry & citrus from the hops. If you're into rye pales like me you'll love this one. 5.0% - Only at Fisher.

Bewilder - Hoppy Agave Amber: This a deep garnet color with toast and pine in the nose. It starts out with firm caramel and toasty malts. That being said: it is quite dry, probably from the agave that fermented out. It actually comes across a lot like a lager. Super clean & dry. 5.0% - Only at Bewilder.

Shades - Tropical Rain: This new sour features pineapple, strawberry and pomegranate with a hint of lactose. I haven't tried this one yet, it's set to debut Saturday at the brewery. 6.5%.

E9 - Starbreaker: An unfiltered light orange with a fruity aroma typical of most hazy IPAs. Flavor-wise  this starts-off with peach, fresh pine and gin botanicals. The tropical flavors come next with papaya and pineapple; balanced but not overdone. The hops are only mildly bitter, nothing green and vegetal about them, the pine element creates an east coast meets west vibe. Pretty clean finish. 6.4% - Found at Slackwater

E9 - 2+2=IPA: One thing I'm loving about E2 is their lower ABV IPAs. Any IPA in the 6 percent range is A-Okay with me. This one is hazy but not overly so. Straw yellow with a nice aroma of melon and citrus zest, fresh and lush. The flavor is also fruity, with some nice peach and guava, but the moderate bitterness runs throughout. It's not just a hop bomb. juicy berries and generic citrus to finish. 6.2% - Found at the Bayou

Cascade - Oregon Summer: I missed this one. It's a sour wheat ale aged in oak barrels for 10 months with Oregon grown blackberries, boysenberries and lavender. 5.7% - Found at the Bayou.

Kasteel - Rouge: is a blend of Kasteel Donker (Quad) and cherry liquor. Huge tart cherry on the nose with faint bready toasty caramel underneath. The flavor is huge tart cherry syrup with faint tartness and light caramel maltiness. It's quite wonderful. 8.0% - Found at the Bayou.

Flensburger - Winterbock: Lots of sweet overripe alcohol soaked plums, raisins, apples and cherries. Malts scream marzipan and almond notes with some light holiday spices. The taste has a lot of sweet bready and grainy malts, with spicy raisins, currents and figs. Honey sweetness comes next with some metallic notes and more marzipan. Some peppery and grassy notes round out a sweet dark sugar finish. This lager is definitely a winter warmer. 7.0% - Found at the Bayou.

Redhook - Big Ballard: This IIPA has a great aroma that has resinous orange and pineapple, though it's subtle. The flavor goes deeper with the piney grapefruit and hits of tangerine peel. Reminds me that larger breweries still have some good game left in them. 8.6% - Found at DABC

Revision - Dr. Lupulin: This Tri-PA pours a hazy orange with an aroma of mango, tropical fruits, and dank hops. The taste follows, with a bit of caramel malt, citrus and piney hops. There's some light dankness, mango and guava next with orange and pineapple and pine resin slowly building into a quite resinous and lingering finish. 11.3% - Found at Angry Goat

New Beer Friday 8/6/21

Thinking about New Beer Friday always gets my tongue excited. If you're like me, I highly recommend checking out this week's list of 'lip smacking' suds. So much great beer out there that you've never tried!

Hopkins - Pray For Rain: Well, it worked. The day this "summer ale" was released the skies opened-up. That's the power of craft beer. Look for a bright ale ale that light with citrus peel and floral notes. 5.0%

Epic - Feel the Beat of the Tangerine: Fun story associated with this one. Some 20+ years ago when my daughter was a kiddo, we were driving in the car and she was singing along to ABBA's Dancing Queen. Not having a complete understanding of the lyrics in the chorus, she sang from the top of her lungs, "feel the beat of the tangerine" instead of "tambourine". You can imagine how much that made us laugh, and hence we tell that story every time that song comes on. Fast forward 20 plus years, Alex now works at Epic Brewing; her mom pitched the name for their next IPA and.... now you all know. That being said, this is a tangerine juice infused IPA that screams tangerine. It's got all of the IPA components that you love with a tart dose of Sunny Delight. You need this in your life. 7.0% - 16 ounce cans at Epic - 22 ounce bottle soon to DABC.

Roosters/Uinta - Jetway Juicy: This collaboration celebrates the opening of Roosters' new Airport bar that officially opened Wednesday. The beer is less juicy and more NZ Pale Ale. It's got the malt and hop bill that makes it an excellent pale, but it lacks the fruitiness of a juicy. That being said, it's one of the best pales I had from Roosters/Uinta. I'm told the "Juicy" is being amplified in version 2.0 that will be out as early as next week. 5.0% - Available at Roosters B Street, Layton, Airport and likely Uinta.

Heber Valley - Mojito Sour: This new ale was kettle soured and finished in the fermenter with key lime and mint.5.0%  - Only available at the source in Heber.

Grid City - Madagascar Vanilla & Blueberry Infused Nitro Honey Cream Ale: I missed this one this evening. However. If you haven't figured out what it's about from the very descriptive name, you probably should stay home this weekend. These nitros haven't let me down yet, I see no reason why they'd ruin my weekend now. 5.0% - Only at Grid City on nitro.

TF - Hazy IPA No. 4: I don't know if that the actual name. But I can tell you it's a citrus hopped bomb that has minimal bitterness and a huge Nelson Sauvin hop profile of berries and pine. One of the best IPAs from TF yet. 6.8% - Only in cans at TF Brewing.

Mason Ale Works - Cash: This coffee forward Imperial Stout has a heavy coffee bean and dark  cocoa powder aroma with a bit of toffee. Taste follows for the most part with some slight differences. Roasted coffee beans, bitter dark chocolate, char wood, cocoa powder and finishes with cold brew coffee. 9.4% - Found at Beer Zombies.

Mason Ale Works/Beer Zombies - Nelson Revengeance: The latest in the Revengeance series features Nelson Sauvin hops 8.0% - Found at Beer Zombies.

Mason Ale Works - One Man Riot: This NEIPA I found this to be a perfectly adequate example of the style. It doesn't explode with any huge flavor profiles, but it is satisfying to the standards for the style demands. is it good? Yes. will it change you complexion? fuck no, but it will make you happy. 6.7% - Found at Beer Zombies.

Beer Zombies Brewing - Zombie Aneurysm: Ordering an aneurysm at a bar is like ordering an enema in Antartica: You know it's probably going to be brutal, but hey, it's a bonafide option in the brochure, so why not? This double NEIPA is full flavored with big citrus and stone fruit. it's hazy but not on that insufferable douchy level. If this is the best option for an aneurysm.... It's tasty and I'd take it. 8.5% - Found at Beer Zombies.

Revision - Smoke and Mirrors: I missed this double NEIPA. 8.0% - Found at The Bayou

Extraomnes - Tripel: I missed this Belgian Tripel  8.6% - Found at The Bayou

De Dolla - Dulle Teve: This is translated to "Mad Bitch" and I have no tasting notes because I missed this Belgian Tripel 10.0% - Found at The Bayou.

De Dolla - Boskeun: This Belgian strong golden ale sounds brilliant, but yet again I Let you down. Found at The Bayou  9.0%

Prairie - Spectrum 2021: Missed this spiced sour. 5.3% - Found at Slackwater.

Falling Knife Brewing - Rational Gaze: Missed this brand new brewery to our market. 8.9% - Found at Slackwater.

Falling Knife Brewing - Verbal Tip: Missed this new 7.3% NEIPA. Found at Slackwater.

Here are this week's Small Batch Beers from Hopkins Brewing. Do you know who else is doing small batch beers like this at this consistency? Nobody. Get your ass to Sugar House and experience some of these fine local brews.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 7/30/21

Level Crossing - VII XXV XVII Wheatwine Ale: The color is a hazy orange-amber with a one-finger milk-white head and thick lacing. It has a nice aroma of malt, butterscotch and dry, dark fruit. It tastes of malt, caramel, and raisin or fig. It starts out with the sweetness typical of a barley wine but the sweetness gives way to a hoppy bitterness and a strong alcohol burn at the finish. In fact, it seemed more hoppy and bitter as it warmed in the glass. It is a medium-bodied, somewhat syrupy ale and the 10.5% ABV is very noticeable. Overall, I enjoyed this wheat wine and would drink it again.

Bewilder - Nouveaux Houblons: For the French impaired "New Hops" is a Franco/Belgian IPA with an all Belgian grain bill, Belgian yeast, and a slew of new French hops, including: Barbe Rouge, Mistral, and Triskel!. I don't know these hops, but they are pretty interesting. There's combo of herbal, berry and citrus. The yeast drives this IPA with bubblegum and clove. This is a textbook Belgo-IPA. 7.3% - On sale today at Bewilder.

RoHa -  SubLemon: This lemon influenced ale is quite malty and toasty with subtle lemon flavor. The tartness is is light and pleasant but it's all quite busy with the contrasting malt tastiness.

2 Row - Hottest One Yet: Missed this new Mango Habanero Lager. Sounds tasty! 6.7% - Available today at 2 Row.

Revision - Hi Juno:  Pours a lovely bright straw yellow in color. Haze is evident but isn't a mud bomb. The aroma is really good. Smells like Citra.Tangerine and papaya doing the rounds. Mosaic adds some humid dank notes to the tropical and sweet citrus ones. Taste is classic citrus - grapefruit, orange and lemon. Flavors of mango, papaya, pineapple and apricot also present.  Finish is citrus, melony with slight floral properties. The lactose is sweet and somewhat vanilla-like. Found at The Bayou, Slackwater. 6.5% Not vegan friendly.

Revision/Mosaka - Unrelenting Mauistli: A collaboration with Moksa Brewing. This has attractive clarity with a glowing straw color. Nose is mild with tropical fruit and malt sweetness. Taste is more in line with the style with more fruit and a hint of pine. Finish leans toward dry. Overall: considering the hop bill,of Strata, Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic, this is pretty subdued. Still, pretty enjoyable. 8.5% - Found at The Bayou, Slackwater.

Prairie - Rainbow Sherbet: Looks like pear nectar with little to no head. Aroma is cherry forward rainbow sherbet, with some underlying mineral and yogurt sour notes. Flavor brings a flash of rainbow sherbet, followed by lime seltzer, orange tic-tac, smarties, and strawberry nerds. It's sour candy in a glass. quite tasty, they nailed the rainbow sherbet vibe. 5.2% - Found at The Bayou, Slackwater. Not vegan friendly.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 7/23/21

Level Crossing - Orange Pez Saison: I wouldn't immediately think Pez while drinking this, It's just an orange forward saison. It's quite phenolic with a decent floral hop bill. 5.0% Only at Level Crossing.

TF/Horus - Atlas: This collaboration beer with SanDiego's Horus Brewing is a Zwiklebier. It's made with Atlas Malts and should be a lager lover's dream. Atlas goes on sale today. 4.7% - Only at TF.

TF - Barrel Aged Grisette: Grisettes are crisp, medium/light-bodied, citrusy beers that hail from Belgium. I have no details on this one; since you're going to be grabbing some Atlas anyway, may as well get on this one too. The Barrel Aged Grisette will be released On Saturday the 24th.  5.0% - Only at TF.

Bombastic - Parliament: Missed this one. This is a peach Gose. 5.5% Found at Slackwater.

Bombastic - Dazzle: This is not a sour ale but there is some nice tartness from the raspberries that takes it in that direction. Quite nice.  6.5% Found at Beer Bar.

New Beer Friday 7/16/21

It was a fairly light week of "research" with just a few local freshies to enjoy. After you've tried this week's New Beer Friday offerings, there's plenty of new beers still floating around from previous weeks. Did I miss something? Please share if I did.

Bewilder - Altbier: This has a nice chestnut color with an aroma full of sweet grainy malt. This beer is malty with the flavors of light toast and bread crust with a good dose of spicy hops. Overall a toasty and malty German delight with assertive bitterness and dry finish. 5.0% - Available starting today at Bewilder.

Fisher - Yet unnamed hazy pale ale: Was unable to try this as it's still in the bright tank. Ask 'em for the stuff. 5.0% at Fisher Today.

Fisher - Yet unnamed pale ale: Was unable to try this as it's still in the bright tank. Ask 'em for the stuff. 5.0% at Fisher Today.

Shades - Double Trub'l: This is a new addition. This double IPA has large fruit hop overtones and is light on the bitterness. It pours light orange with a light head and medium mouth feel. 10.0% Available at Shades.

Surly - And The Devil makes Three: This TRIPA pours mostly clear with a muted but boozy nose. The taste follows with more heavy alcohol some citrus peel and pine. For such a big beer it seems to lack the characteristics that you'd expect from a Triple IPA. 10.6% - Found at Slackwater

Surly - Mapping the Multiverse: This Hazy IPA punches out with citrus, pineapple, vague stone fruit and kiwi. Mild grass and herbal hop notes toward the end. A bit of booze warmth in the finish. This is a fine hazy, but not great. 7.3% - Found at Slackwater.

Robinson - Old Tom: Missed this one. It's described as being rich and warming with a cherry brandy like color and character. This strong ale has a booming balance of ripe malt, and peppery hops combined with roasted nut and chocolate flavours with a smoky richness. A distinctive deep port wine finish with bitter hops balance complemented by heady, vinous aromas of dark fruit. 8.5% - Found at the Bayou.

Robinson - Chocolate Tom: This chocolate version is a rich combination of Robinsons’ Old Tom and the cocoa. It's a full bodied strong ale filled with the flavor of sweet malt and velvety smooth chocolate teased together with an inspired touch of Madagascan bourbon vanilla. 6.0% - Found at the Bayou.

New Beer Friday 7/9/21

Toasted Barrel - Our Beer: Brewed to help the support the families of fallen local firefighters. So, get your butts over to Toasted Barrel because a portion of every bottle and draft will help a family who lost a hero. This double dry-hopped Czech Pilsner is crackery with some slight cereal sweetness. Snappy herbal hoppiness rounds it out. 5.0% - Only at Toasted Barrel.

Proper - Well Rested: This Mexican style lager with lime was aged in Reposado barrels. There's a nice fruity lime character in the nose that leads you to believe that this will citrusy. In fact it's quite earthy. The barrel provides nice oak and tequila notes with a fair amount of maltiness. This is a very, very limited batch, so don't wait too long on this one.  8.0% Available at Proper starting today.

Proper - Hop Things with Mr. Talus: This is a hazy IPA that has many of the tried and true flavors of melon citrus and pith. However the finish has a bit of bitterness that gives it "poundability". Nice NE Pale Ale. 5.0% - Available at Proper starting today.

Avenues Proper - City of Gold: This is a classic old school American Pale Ale that features a generous amount of El Dorado Hops. A good dose of citrus peel, flowery notes and pine. 5.0% -Available at Avenues Proper and Proper Brewing starting today.

Grid City - Pineapple Passion Fruit Whole Flower Dr-hopped Nitro Pale Ale: I wish I got paid by the word, the name of Grid City's nitro beers would be easily be paying for that new boat. Apart from the descriptive name, this pale features Cryo-Citra, Cryo-Mosaic along with whole flower Simcoe, Mosaic and Citra. Pineapple for sure in the aroma, but I'm surprised by how much passion fruit is there too - along with black tea. Defiantly fruit forward, but less than I was expecting. The hops balance it all out with orange peel. Bitter finish, but it takes awhile to notice it. Another hit from the Nitro Maestro! 5.0% Only at Grid City.

Kiitos - Michelada: This tomato forward beer has notes of chili powder and lime side-by-side with a light body that finishes semi-dry and is very easy drinking. A little celery salt and a dash of tabasco and it'd be perfect. 5.0% - Very limited at Kiitos.

Here are this week's Small Batch beer from Hopkins Brewing. Cheers!

The taste is more of the earthy and floral hops. Light notes of sweet citrus with a fair amount of malt flavor. Grainy. Finishes with more floral and grassy hops. Floral aftertaste. Light bodied and slightly oily. Very little alcohol presence. Available today at Bewilder.

Strap Tank - Guavalution: This fruited wheat ale features big guava flavors with a nice biscuity backbone. 4.9% - Found at Strap Tank (Springville).

Uinta - Party Mansion: This fruited sour features peaches and blueberrie, it also utilizes "philly sour yeast". It's clean like Kevin yeast but slightly more tart. The peaches are a bit muted with the berries and the base sour beer running the show. A nice sour at 6.1% - Available at Uinta.

2 Row - Dank Nugs: This beastly TRIIPA lives up to its name with chewy, earthy and herbal dankness. Some citrus qualities emerge as well but this is all about the hops. There's a nice caramel base to keep it fro getting too dry. Oh, did I mention that it's 11.9%? Available at 2 Row and most of your better beer pubs and restaurants.

New Beer Friday 06/25/21

UTOG - Mother Puck'n Mango: Sour notes: wheaty, bready, and light mango. Definitely getting those traditional tart, sour and bready flavors. Nice mango flavor that doesn't overpower the base beer Overall: Nice sour with complimentary mango flavors. Looking forward to the next can I have in the fridge. 6.5% Available at UTOG

Epic - Rocky Mountain Chai: This is a cream ale at its base with chai spices. The nose is massive with Spicy botanicals, ginger, cardamon, white pepper, orange peel, cinnamon and clove. The taste follows with equal intensity as this spicy beast envelopes your senses. There's a lingering spicy finish. 5.5% Available at Epic

Desert Edge - Ete Saison: Pours golden in color with a finger worth of fluffy white head. Aroma has spicy citrus and clove with a hint of a honey-like sweetness. A bouquet of different spices -- so many it's almost hard to pick each one out. Taste is not overly sweet (a common complaint I have with these style interpretations), yet it's not overly dry. Citrus and spice rapidly cycle. A primarily dominant lemony-citrus flavor emerges, but it is then quickly cut by a varietal of different spices. A bit of spicy ginger finishes the sip. 6.1% Available at Desert Edge

Proper -Death in the Afternoon: This is a rum barrel aged Gose made with passion fruit, guava and coriander. The rum comes through nicely in the aroma along with lemon and guava. The taste starts with a briny bite that transitions into the passion fruit and then the barrel. There's a fair amount of wood that along with the sodium, mellows the tartness from the Gose. 7.5% Available at Proper.

Proper - Key Lime Ale on Nitro: The name says it all, and it delivers. The nitro conditioning gives this a nice creaminess that kinda pushes this into sorbet or gelato territory. It's not sweet at all, but the gas gives it a nice round feel. Tasty stuff. 5.0% Available at Proper

Wasatch/Three Weavers - Collaboration IPA: This IPA has a slightly hazy pale gold color, large frothy white head with good retention, nice lacing. Plenty of carbonation streaming as it sits. A nice aroma of pithy tangerine, grapefruit and lemon. The taste follows with pineapple, mango and papaya along with a little bit of stone fruit. Modest pine, dank, malt sweetness and grass notes. Solid malt backbone. Worth your time. 7.0% Available at

Bewilder - Blackberry Passion Fruit: A nice nose of mostly lemony yogurt and blackberry. The tastes starts with a bit of sulfur then transitions into lemon, then passion fruit with the blackberry rounding it out.  Nice berry profile. 5.0% Available at Bewilder.

Shades - Tropical Storm: Pouring a standard hazy appearance, the light goldenrod finish on the appearance is topped with an arid, cottony froth. A robust tropical perfume rolls off of the foam before a light and malty sweetness graces the tongue with sourdough, saltwater taffy and fruit juices. Then as the acidity washes away the sweetness, a quick middle palate of of passionfruit, crabapple, lime, lemon and white grape rise to the forefront and is backed with gooseberry, pineapple, grapefruit and papaya. High praise for its tropical fruit portrayal, the beer even quicker late palate is sour with the medley of citrus and orchard fruit directly behind the exotic tropical taste. 6.5% Available at Shades

Three Weavers - Cloud City: This hazy IPA has a fresh aroma of peaches, mangoes, and vague citrus fruits. Ripe mango and fresh pineapple start things off in the taste, with peach, apricot, orange, and pine running in the background. The bitterness is right upfront alongside the immediate citrus and tropical fruit flavor. 6.5% Available at UBC's West Side Tavern.

Deep Ellum - Manic Confidence: Pours a slightly hazy apricot color with pineapple, mango, peach wafting up. Sweet, sticky, hop punch out at first with light, citrus, orange, pineapple with a slightly dry finish. A  slight hint of alcohol in the finish. 8.0% Available at UBC's West Side Tavern.

Cigar City - Fancy Papers:  Light amber hazy body with a nose of mango, pineapple and orange and biscuit. Although this is well hopped, at no point is it bitter in a traditonal sense. Passionfruit, lime, grapefruit, kiwi and honeydew hit first. Mango, guava and orange play secondary rolls ahead of a fairly bitter late palate of tea and hay. Alcohol is well hidden. 6.5% Available at UBC's West Side Tavern.

Note: The West Side Tavern is no longer a full service bar. It is a literal tavern now. You can still buy "high point" beers to go though.

St. Feuillien - FIVE: Missed this one.  5.0% Found at the Bayou on draft.

New Beer Friday 6/18/21

Sorry I missed you all last week. I was lacking a pesky thing called the internet, and well.... I guess that's kinda important for content like this nowa days. Here's some of the stuff from last week and some new stuff from this week. Don't forget that Canfest is happening up in Ogden this Saturday. Support our local  brewers up north as they pour us some tasty suds in this crazy era warm weather. Happy New Beer Friday.

Toasted Barrel - Rose: Very Raspberry forward. The base Sour beer give it a very “green” flavor. Think: golden raspberries. It has a nice puckering dry finish. 5.0% - available at Toasted Barrel.

2 Row - Back to the Rind: If all the citrus forward IPAs to come out of 2 Row, this has to be the most citrus like.   Everything about this beer scream citrus , from presentation, to aroma & taste - this is the citrus beer you crave, less the actual fruit  Dont wait, this one is disappearing fast

Desert Edge - Trolley Rye IPA: Tthe spiciness from the rye, which is different from the peppery effect of "spice" beers, is on full display, with a bit of heft and spiciness coming through as well. Balancing with the heft of the rye are the bitter profiles of the hops, some faint burnt caramel sweetness, and some notes of citrus rind and dandelion. Some faint lingering bitterness on the finish.

Ogden River - Strawberries and Cream: Missed this one  try it when you head up to Ogden for Canfest this weekend  5.0% - at Ogden River Brewing.

Uinta - Driftwood: This coconut lager is mage with Wakatu hops. The coconut is very subtle; not in your face at all. The dry hopping helps compliment the coconut as well. Lemon grass and lime peel round out the end. The finish is long but not lingering.  6.5%

Shades - Spaghetti Dinner: Itdoesn’t look like marinara. It does however smell exactly like marinara. Flavor wise the beers sour base, influences the otherwise accurate marinara flavors. It’s a little tart, but you get the basic idea of what they were shooting for. The only thing missing is the starchy noodle aftertaste. If that is important to you (like it was to me), I suggest a neutral cracker or a Keebler club cracker to keep things authentic. 6.2% - at Shades and various beer pubs around the Wasatch Front.

Shades - Watermelon Sour Patch: Made watermelon & sour patch gummies, this is a faithful representation of the beloved,  jaw locking treat. 6.2% Found at Shades Brewing.

Epic - Black Forest Cake Stout: I know what you’re thinking. Why do I want a damn imperial, barrel-aged, coffee infused dark beer, right now, in this heat? Well, smart ass. I’ll tell you why. This experimental, one of a kind beer was made specifically for the labs at Epic. You have the opportunity to try this barrel aged one-off for just a short time. Take heed, this is danger that doesn’t taste dangerous. The coconut is light, as is the cherry. Polled the patrons droning it, 7.5% was the option on this 11.0% beer. With that knowledge, you can now proceed. Only at Epic in SLC.

Bewilder - Cherry Mother Pucker: Brewed to honor the winner of the Utah Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s winning beer - a competition put on by Jamie Burnham & Bewilder Brewing Co. This recipe by Curt McCuistion is a traditional German Berlinerweiss made with tart cherries. It comes across as soft & sweet with a good dose of tart pie cherries rounding it out. It literally hits in that order. 6.6%

Never Valley - Berry Pour: missed this one. Made with blackberry & blueberry purée. 5.0%

Ogden River - Hit the Grit: missed this IPA  5.0% - Available at Ogden River.

Prairie - Spicy Pickle Monster: Missed this one  I think you get the idea. Found at Bayou & Slackwater

Prairie - Just the Juice: Mussed this one. 7.4% Bayou, Slackwater

Bombastic - Wisdom: Mussed this one  Found at Bayou & Slackwater  7.0%

Melvin - Boom Shakazacca: Missed this DIPA  8.4% - found at Bayou & Slackwater.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday

Well, May is off to a warm start; better get on some of these summer forward beers this weekend. Also, if you're looking for some great beers to pair with your Pride celebrations we have a list of the local themed beers as well. Happy Pride and New Beer Friday!

Bewilder - El Fruti Boi: This Pride themed Milkshake IPA was made with pineapple and guava. This is fruity but not too sweet. The guava is most prominent popping out early on with nice citrus notes from the hops backing it up. Pineapple tanginess brings up the back end. Tasty stuff. 6.0% At Bewilder and Mountain West Cider.

Bewilder American Zwickelbier: This lager was made with flaked corn which gives it a slight cereal character that is clean and grainy sweet. floral hops round it all out. 4.8% Available on draft at Bewilder.

Toasted Barrel - Double Juicy IPA: Really bright, fresh fruit aroma with mango and passionfruit. Flavor brings in pineapple and guava along with maybe a hint of spicy lemongrass. White peppercorn? Quite thin on body, malt, and mouthfeel, very much a wheat IPA kind of profile, but with less alpha bitterness. 8.5%

Salt Flats - Rainbow Road: This sour ale was made with banana and peach. The banana is subtle and adds a nice locto-ish sweetness without the actual milk sugars being present. The peach works well with the sour base and the whole package is quite pleasant. Available at Salt Flats and various beer pubs and restaurants around SLC.

Squatters - Kellerbier: The smell and taste are a lot on honey, floral and grassy hops, clover, orange zest. Very mellow and balanced. The hop, malt and yeast characterisrics are well integrated and bring a bold beer. The bitter sweet profile is enjoyable and the beer stays drinkable all the way. Its creamy mouthfeel goes well with the whole thing. 5.0% - Only at Squatters Downtown

Squatters - MMMM Hop: This pale ale is made with a shload of mosaic hops which makes it a perfect pale in my book. mmmm. 5.0% only at Squatters Downtown.

Melvin - Warrying Empires: Missed this. It's described as a luminous wheat ale dry-hopped with Lotus and finished with a touch of Buddha’s hand fruit. The soft wheat body lets the hops and fruit shine with bright citrus and tropical creamsicle flavors. 6.0% - Found at Bayou.

Rogue - Raspberry Tartlandia: Missed this. The name kinda says it all, eh? Found at Slackwater (Sandy).

Shoffenhofer - Passion fruit Hefeweizen: Missed this one too. 2.5% Found at Bayou.

I'm sure that I'll miss a few of these, but here's a list of beers and ciders that were designed around Utah's Pride celebrations. Consider enjoying some of these with your pride parties.

Level Crossing - White Salamander: This fruited Hazy Double IPA is dosed with Cara Cara Orange, Passion Fruit and Guava with a hop bill that features Lotus, Zappa and Bru-1. Passion fruit hits off the top with the mango coming in next. Malt profile is nice but mostly hidden behind the fruit. Orange juice rounds it out with a good dose of bitterness for balance. The finish is long & lingering. 8.2% - Available at Level Crossing.

Strap Tank - Orange Hopsicle: This is another beer that features Mandarina Bavaria hops along with vanilla and a small amount of lactose. 5.0% - Available Saturday Strap Tank Lehi.

RoHa - Barrel-aged Kensington: This imperial or "grand" saison was aged in Beehive Distilling's Jack Rabbit gin barrels. The botanicals from the gin work really well with the spiciness from the yeast. A nice well rounded beer. 6.8% Available in crowlers at RoHa.

New Beer Friday 5/21/21

Hops still rule this week but there are some mavericks out there keeping things interesting. The Bayou may have been
absent for a while, but they're back with a vengeance with a deep list of new beers that'll blow your mind.

Kiitos - West Coast IPA: This new IPA was brewed with Sabro, Citra and Cascade hops. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and tropical fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest, grapefruit juice, and tropical fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. 5.0% - Available at Kiitos now, and soon to grocery stores.

Kiitos - Nitro Rimando Pale Ale: This is a small batch pale ale on nitro that I believe was made with papaya. This is quite delicious: medium sweet malts with nice citrus peel notes. The fruit is complimentary without being too in your face. The Nitrogen is smooth and adds depth. 5.0% - Only at Kiitos.

Fisher - Dawn of the New Haze: Good citrusy, lightly tropical nose. Mild floral hops. The palate is lightly  bitter, but the interplay between grapefruit, pineapple, and hops really work. Especially for a 5.0% session IPA. Only at Fisher.

Ogden River - Cucumber Gose: Pours a nice golden color with a slight tint of green. Fresh cucumber invokes summer garden memories.  The taste reveals a bright and refreshing combination of lightly tart cucumber, salt, and citrus.  Finishes with a lightly bready malt note that reminds you it is still a beer.  Perfect for quenching your thirst after some fun in the sun! 5.0% - Only at Ogden River
