Spring is in the air and this week's beer selections are a fine example of that. If fruit is your literal jam, this will be a good weekend for you. Happy New Beer Friday
Grid City - Nitro Apricot Whole Flower Dry Hopped Pale Ale: Nobody can accuse the Grid City gang for being vague in their beer naming process. I am officially dubbing Head Brewer, Jeremy Gross the "Nitro Maestro" because he's hit another nitro beer out of the park. This is their classic pale ale with light tart apricot and a good dose of citrusy hops. Very nice stuff. 5.0% - Only at Grid City.
Kiitos - Strawberry Milkshake: It has a nice purple hue with a simple aroma of strawberry. Taste-wise it's much of the same with lightly tart strawberry and medium to light lactose sweetness. A wee bit jammy which is fine considering what it is. Not vegan friendly. 5.0% - Available at Kiitos.
Epic - Big Bad Baptist Reserve 2021: The Reserve is a blend of the choicest barrels of this year’s original version of Big Bad Baptist, plus beer from the best barrels from all of the Big Bad Baptist variants. It will be released this morning when the brewery opens. I hope to have some tasting notes later today. Keep an eye out on our social media. Only at Epic, soon to DABC.
Desert Edge - West Coast IPA: The nose is hoppy, malty, with a pretty nice citrus blend of orange, tangerine and grapefruit with some guava and mango mixed in. The taste is pretty nice, hoppy, malty, with a pretty nice citrus salad of tangerine, grapefruit and mango with some nice pineyness rounding out the back end. Medium body, ABV hidden pretty nicely, with a nice dry/bitter finish. Overall, a pretty tasty brew. 7.0% - Only at Desert Edge, Now in 16 ounce cans.
Wasatch - Strawberry Blonde Ale: Big aroma up front of unripe strawberries pops right away. Plenty of tartness, with a touch of sweetness. Some creamy malt character is picked up but this aroma is all about the strawberries. A round taste of strawberry sweetness hits first. A touch of tartness shows up mid body with continuing waves of well balanced sweetness. The blonde ale accents actually show up here with creamy bready malts on the back end. Finish is light sweetness. 5.0% Available at all Wasatch locations.
Strap Tank - Odin's Pale Ale: This is a Norwegian Style Pale Ale that I sadly missed. 5.0%
Strap Tank - Bunk Off: This is an Irish Red Ale that I'm also embarrassed to have missed. 5.0%
Shades - Hazy Brah!: Pours a hazy golden amber, peach coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and juicy tropical notes of mango, papaya and guava, with hints of citrus and grassy dankness as well. Taste is great balance of light biscuity malt, juicy tropical notes of mango, papaya and guava, lighter citrus notes of grapefruit and lime peel and hints of grassy dankness. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some tropical, dank notes lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. 7.0% - Only at Shades.
Talisman - Pretty Witty: Missed this one. Look for notes of herbal/white pepper, bubblegum and sweet earthy (real) blueberry. 5.0% - only at Talisman.
Cascade - Framblanc: This sour ale is made with 3,500 pounds golden raspberries and is a blend of sour blond ales aged for up to 14 months in oak wine barrels with fresh flavors of raspberries, green grapes, peaches and pears. 7.6% Found at Slackwater in Sandy
Cascade - Pear Mary: This pours a slightly hazy golden color with acidic pear and notes of vinegar, ginger and oaky pine. The taste starts pear forward with the ginger and pine bursting; vinous white wine elements emerge, in the middle, with the oak picking up the rear. 7.1% Found at Slackwater in Sandy
Modern Time - Fruitlands Strawberry Limeade: This has a clean lactic twang with natural strawberry and lime flavors. These flavors work well together and nearly neutralize the sodium snap from the Gose base beer. This will make it a perfect pool beer. 4.8% Found at Slackwater in Sandy.
Jolly Pumpkin - I thought I Was Special: This is listed as "retired", the last release was in 2019, so if you want to get a sip of this Wild Hazy IPA you'd better hit Slackwater in Sandy soon. I missed this, but I sure want to try it! 9.0%
Revision/Kohola - Owyhee: A hazy golden yellow with heavy tropical fruits and stone fruits in the nose. Pineapple starts off with some mango and papaya. The hop bitterness presence is minimal, but this is the epitome of a juicy NEIPA. Soft and smooth. Not as creamy as other offerings but it's one of the juiciest NEIPAs Revision/Kohola has made.
Cheers!
