New Beer Friday 11/18/11

Looks like the weekend weather is gunna be crap. So we've found a nice diverse selection to help you trudge through it.

Rogue: Good Chit Pilsner - The nose has a subtle note of pear and grass. The flavor is malty with a strong floral and grassy edge, a fair amount of bitterness, a metallic tang and a whisper of fruit. A good Czech style Pils. @Beerhive

Lagunitas: Dopple Weizen
- The nose is fruity, but dense. Lots of banana and peach. Some clove and pepper. Very nice. The taste follows suite with a healthy banana presence, as well as peach, apple, and fig. Herbal with a faint tart spiciness in the finish. Very nice! @Bayou, Beerhive

Deschutes: Fresh Hop Mirror Pond Pale Ale
- The nose is fruity, grainy, and deliciously hoppy. This is a well-balanced pale ale. All of the flavors are there. It's hoppy, but not too much, has a significant malted barley flavor, mango citrus, and pine notes. Delicious! @Beerhive

Shades of Pale: 4 Play Porter
- Just released. 4-Play Porter is a tribute to aviators across the ages for their courage and sense of adventure, especially friend of the brewery Marilyn, an acrobatic pilot, that flies a plane nick named 4-Play. It is a traditional English style porter right down to the top fermenting yeast. Brewed with high quality brown malts which gives this ale a light caramel, black liquorish, peat flavor porter fans love.. @412 Bistro, Park City.

Cheers!

Nice! I think the Mirror Pond Pale Ale and the Fresh Hop version are one and the same, just a renaming. The Dopple Weizen sounds cool.

Douglas,
Mirror Pond Pale ale is a year round offering from Deschutes, the Fresh Hop version is just what it says, a version of Mirror Pond where they use Fresh recently harvested hops. It is a different beer.

Cheers

Not to pile-on, but Geoff is right. It's different beer. Part of the Bond Street series.

Fresh hop was also available at the wine store on 3rd west at 1/person (first time I'd seen that). It is quite a bit grassier than the classic mirror pond.

Had some "Secale" tonight.
Being biased as a hophead I had some personal issues but my, what a tasty treat..initially bruised fruit nose and then a very complex malt/sweet/barrel toasty carmel taste. I wanted more bitterness for a moment but I let my selfishness go. Letting it warm up the aroma caught up to the flavor, matching it after a couple of minutes. As far as wood profile, well balanced, easy down the hatch, like I like..a tiny bit hot, fills the expectation though, being lagered in High West rye whiskey barrels.
Deff a doppelbock. one of these at a time, need to study some more, but this beers malt intrigues me.

As we've discussed previously, my criteria (based on Rate Beer's criteria) for what is and is not a 'new' beer is different that others perhaps. Certainly if the recipe is 100% the same, just using fresher hops of the same variety it is the same beer. Of course, every batch of every beer is slightly different, especially for craft beer, but slightly different doesn't make it a new beer.

Douglas,
Didn't say it was a "new" Beer, I said it was a "version" of Mirror Pond, and therefor a different beer. Regardless of what Rate Beer has to say on the matter. The Brewers intentions are to created a different version, which is truly what is important. We should not allow ourselves to become wrapped up in definitions created by online rating sites. In all my years of judging beers, I do not base my judgement on what some online rating site has to say on the matter. Beers are judged on the individual sample submitted and I can tell you that the fresh hop version of Mirror Pond tastes different than the normal year round offering. This version is more than just a "renaming" as you put it. Labeling it as such does a disservice to the brewers in my opinion.

Now back to the point at hand..ALL DOG PILE ON DOUGIE!!...LOL

Cheers
Geoff

What is this Dogpile? I am assuming it involves gay sex, and I'm considering it. Which public restroom will we be meeting in? And can I bring beer? Oh, and can someone wax Mikey's back please?

Woh, hold on there. I'm ok with a good "Brazilian". But the back is off limits!

This could actually be the most vapid, pointless argument in the history of the internet. No small feat! Way to go!
