The Innagural Utah Brewers Guild Festival

This Saturday The Utah Brewers Guild will be hosting a unique beer festival in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. There are a few things that make this beer festival unique: It's put on by the breweries to support brewery causes; such as independent beer festivals, beer gatherings and pro Utah beer causes.

Also, it's one of the first brew fests to take advantage of downtown SLC's urban settings by utilizing the seclusion and charm of the city's Regent Street.

Finally, this is a collaboration beer festival. All of the participating breweries have teamed up with one and other to make a special beer that will only be available at the festival. A part from the collaboration beers you will also have the opportunity to try other high and low point beers from the local attendees.

There are two ticket tiers:
VIP Admission includes a swag bag and early access to the event’s exclusive brews before the kegs kick! VIP is from 1-6 pm.
General Admission is from 2-6pm.

Each ticket includes 12, 3oz. tasters and can be purchased here. Feel free to purchase mor etickets if you feel that not enough.

It looks like there will be two Key Lime Milkshake IPAs going head to head. Which will prevail as the festival favorite? Keep track and let your opinion be known!

Food trucks and live music will also be on site.

Sorry kiddos, this is a 21+ only event.

If you'd like to volunteer for the event, sign up here!

McCarthey Plaza is on Regent Street (the alley parallel to State and and Main Streets, behind the Eccles theater in downtown Salt Lake City).

To the right is a list of the breweries and their collaboration beers. Hope to see you there.

Cheers!

The Utah Brewers Guild Needs You!

We are about to enter a critical time in Utah's craft beer evolution. The coming legislation from Utah's law makers over the next couple of years will have a massive impact on how Utah's beer industry will evolve over the foreseeable future.

I'm not trying to be overly dramatic when I say, the coming changes to Utah's beer laws will be the biggest since the end of prohibition. In all likely hood we will see the end of 3.2 beer, draft restrictions along with the implementation of new taxes. The Utah Brewers Guild is striving to get ahead of coming cluster f*** to help bring Utah into the 20th century. Yeah, I said 20th century.

Recent fund raisers have given the guild's coffers enough money to hire a dedicated lobbyists and to promote a positive perception about our beer industry's presence in the public eye. Another part of the Guild's budget has been set aside for an executive director to head the UBG. The current body is comprised of representatives from many of Utah's breweries. Their days are already full with their respective day-to-today operations and have limited time to devote to these critical, impending issues.

So the Utah Brewers Guild is looking for someone to take the reins and help move the guild forward into the new age of Utah beer. This isn't a voluntary, donate your time position. There is a part-time compensation package included; that could even become full time down the road.

The Utah Brewers’ Guild (UBG) is a 501 (c) 6 non-profit trade organization founded to provide a unified voice for Utah craft breweries and to help promote and educate its members and the local community regarding craft beer and the craft beer industry.

Here is the job listing. If you love craft beer and know your way around nonprofit management and/or the craft beer industry you could help us all have a better craft beer life. Please pass this along to any interested individuals.

Cheers!

SLUG Mag on Tap Happens this Saturday

This Saturday is SLUG Mag on Tap - a beer festival designed to celebrate SLUG Magazine's 10th Annual Local Beer Issue as well as being a fundraiser for the Utah Brewers Guild. This festival will take place at the Gateway and will feature only locally produced beers and ciders - both high and low point.

The fest will feature 22 breweries pouring 79 beers from breweries ranging from Vernal to Zion. Booths will also be set up showcasing some of Utah's newest "in planning" breweries, to give people an idea of what kind of new suds they can expect in the coming months.

This will be an adults only shindig, so please leave the kiddos with nanna.

When: 2–7 p.m. at The Gateway. Pre-sale tickets are available for $20 and will be $25 day-of. Each ticket includes 3 sample tokens and a full-sized commemorative mug. No chairs, coolers, umbrellas, strollers, wagons, dogs or tents are allowed. I have a feeling the Gateway's Fountain will be highly utilized. RSVP to the Facebook Event here.

The 2015 Utah Brewers Guild - Harvest Festival

The Utah Brewers Guild is having a party this Sunday!  If you're not familiar with the UBG - it's an organization comprised of all of Utah's breweries that focuses on beer appreciation and education. This event is a fundraiser for the guild, so that they can do more community oriented festivities like this.

The theme for this event is Harvest Festival. There will be limited amount a fresh, wet hopped beers for you to try. If you're not familiar with the term,  "wet hopped" It's process of taking fresh from the bine (not vine) hops and add them to the beer - less than 24 hours from picking. This process adds a new dimension to the hop profiles of the beer - giving them a fresher more accentuated than normal taste.

Everyone that has made a wet hopped beer will be bringing one to sample. there with also be other harvest style beers to try. The event will be held at The Beer Bar - in their back lot and goes from Noon - 4pm. The cost is $10 - that gets you three sample, you can purchase more after that. This a 21+ event - no children.  Hope to see you there!

The Utah Brewers Guild's Harvest Festival

Yesterday, we briefly got into the topic of "wet hopped" beers when discussing Uinta's seasonal Wet-n-Wyld Pale Ale. Basically brewers have taken on a trend to using the freshly harvested green - wet hops straight off the bine. These wet hops are literally dripping with the sticky delicoius yellow resins (lupulin), which carries with it all of the essential aromatic and bittering oils from the hop plant.

This technique can make for very unique/fresh tasting beers. Since the hop harvest only comes around once a year, it's the perfect time to showcase what brewers can do with the fresh hops they've purchased. Taking advantage of this situation the Utah Brewers Guild is going to hold their first annual Harvest Festival: a unique opportunity to showcase some freshest hoppy beers around.

The Harvest Festival will take place on October 11th from 2pm - 6pm at the The Avenues Proper Restaurant and Publick House. $5 gets you in the door - $2 for a 4 oz sample or $5 for a full glass. Participating Breweries include: Avenues Proper, Bohemian Brewing, Bonneville Brewing, Desert Edge Brewing, Epic Brewing, Hoppers Brewing, RedRock Brewing, Shades of Pale Brewing, Squatters Beers, Uinta Brewing, Vernal Brewing and Wasatch Beers. It goes without saying (but i'll say it anyway) this is a 21 year old + event.

Proceeds go to the Utah Brewers Guild so that they can continue to fund great community events like this. Hope to see you there!

Cheers!

In other beer news

Shades of Pale Brewing has a new home! Yesterday the Farghers signed a new lease in South Salt Lake (East Stabbington) on the corner of West Temple and Utopia (behind Pat's BBQ). Look for a new Tap room and Bottleshop.   With increased space, that means more capacity SOP will be able to release a whole line of new beers that have been on hold including a high point line, seasonals, and experimentals.

Another nice thing about the new location is it's proximity to Trax, less than a block away. No opening date yet, we'll keep you up to date. Congrats Trent and Alexandra!

Epic Brewing has officially announced that their 12 oz cans will soon be coming. The release of Escape to Colorado IPA and Hop Syndrome Pils will be the two debuting beers. Canning will commence in about a week or two in Denver with distribution in all 15 states where Epic's beers are sold. Look for cans in Utah sometime in June.

The festivities will run from 1:00pm - 6:00pm. Local food trucks will be there (I'm not sure which ones) serving up a wide varity of food. You must be 21 or older.
