New Beer Friday - Beer Camp Edition

Many of you (including me) have been screaming for the Beer Camp brews from Sierra Nevada, they're final here! but in very limited supply and locations. You can find the following Beer Camps at the Bayou and the Beer Bar. Sadly I've not had a chance to try any of these new beers. I hear good things about all of them.

Beer Camp - Alt Route
Beer Camp - CANfusion Rye Bock
Beer Camp - Chico King
Beer Camp - Double Latte
Beer Camp - Electric Ray
Beer Camp - Maillard's Odyssey
Beer Camp - Myron's Walk
Beer Camp - Tater Ridge
Beer Camp - There And Back
Beer Camp - Torpedo Pilsner
Beer Camp - Yonder Bock
Beer Camp - Yvan The Great

Deschutes - Dopple Dinkle Bock: Havn't tried yet. 10.5% ABV @ Beer Bar

RedRock Fröhlich Pils: This beer has a great floral and grassy nose that full of toasty grains and dry herbal grassy bitterness. The finish is dry and lingering with a hint of sulfur. 5.5% ABV @ RedRock Locations now. Wide release soon.

The Annex is getting into the Firkin fun and will be offering firkins of Epic/Annex beer every Friday starting at 4:30 pm. Their first offering will be the Annex's Schwarzbier Coffee firkin for $4 a pint.

Another Annex beer is also be served via Firkin today at the Bayou. The Brett Pale Ale collaboration with the Lauter Day Homebrew Club is being offered up. This is the same beer that was served-up last month at the Annex, just conditioned for the firkin. Tapping is at 3pm.

And a reminder that this weekend is the Beehive Brew-off Homebrew Competition. The Awards will be held Sunday around 5pm at the Bayou. We will post the results here as soon as all of the awards are given out.

Prost!

Squatters Emerson Avenue Pale Ale

Today, Squatters is releasing this year's entry for the the Great American Beer Festival's Pro/Am Competition. Emerson Avenue American Pale Ale is the Gold medal winning entry from the 2012 Beehive Brew-Off, brewed by home brewers Tommy and Gabi Lopresto.

Pours a murky deep amber color with a sturdy two & a half fingers of beige foam. The nose is floral with light citrus and berry notes - clean toasty malts also present. The taste starts bitter with grapefruit/citrus rind notes. The toasty malts pop through for just a bit, but then the bitterness comes back to linger in the finish atop biscuity malts. 6% abv. Available at Squatters locations. Good luck in the competition!

Cheers!

The 5th Annual Beehive Brew-Off

Even though it's nine months away it's time to start thinking about getting your home brew ready for the 5th Annual Beehive Brew-Off. This year's competition will be held Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18 with awards given out around 5pm on the 18th.

Competition is fierce, it will likely take all of the allotted time to hone your recipes. From my personal observations at the judges table, while creativity drives the competition it's technical prowess that get the awards. More info as the comp gets closer.

Cheers!

2010 Beehive Brew-Off Announced

Get your recipes ready. The date for the 2010 Beehive Brew-Off has been announced. August 21-22 will be the judging days with awards being given out on the 22nd.

I don't have the exact dates for entries yet but as per last year's competition entries were accepted the first three weeks of July with final entries due a month before the competition. I'm giving you this vague info now so you can start planning.

Beehive Brew-Off Winners

First off let me say that for a first attempt at a Homebrew competition Mark, Jamie, Mike and everyone else involved did an incredible job of putting on a well organized, detail oriented BJCP sanctioned competition.

Besides running smoothly, I gotta say the quality of the beers entered really blew the judges away. We're talking about professional brewers, industry professionals and certified judges. It really made me sink back in my chair and think to myself, "man... my homebrew really blows".

At one point Saturday afternoon I thought that we were going to "go to blows" over which IPA was the overall winner. Luckily the final result kept everyone happy. I hope.

Entries wern't limited to Utah homebrewers, entries came from as far away as California, Texas and Nebraska. Check out the Beernut's website for more details. Also, check out the news coverage from Fox13.

Cheers to all the winners. Nicely done!
