Salt Lake City AHA Rally

Do you home brew beer? If you love good craft beer you should, it's the next logical step in your obsession. Not only does it gives you a better understanding of what's involved in it's making but it also aids in the enhancement of your pallet; to help you identify flaws in beer and what caused them.

The American Homebrewers Association is a great resource to aid you in the pursuit of Zymurgy. The AHA is committed to promoting the community of homebrewers and empowering homebrewers to make the best beers in the world.

If you'd like to explore the world of homebrewing or are just looking to build a tighter connection with our local homebrew community, the AHA is having a rally next month at Uinta Brewing Co. The AHA rally is free to current AHA members. Non-members can join now or sign up at a discounted rate at the door.

AHA Founder, Charlie Papazian will be on hand as well. If your not familiar with Charlie, he has done more for the craft beer movement in the United States than any other single individual. Charlie founded the Association of Brewers as well as Great American Beer Festival, and wrote The Complete Joy of Home Brewing.

Steve Kuftinec, Uinta Brewing's Co-Owner will also be on hand, as well as a special beer release and prizes from the AHA and Uinta Brewing Company.

2009 Beehive Brew-Off

If your thinking about entering your special beer in Utah's very first homebrew competition, here's all the info you'll need.

The Beehive Brew-off is an AHA & BJCP sanctioned event.

Entries will be accepted from July 5 through July 20. Homebrew entry form, fee & beer deadline is Monday, July 20 .

Entry fees are $6.00 for the first entry and $3.00 for each additional entry. (Checks should be made payable to The Beer Nut) All entries must include the entry form and payment, and all bottles must have labels attached with rubber bands only. Improperly submitted entries, or entries received after July 20, may be disqualified. Entry forms can be found here and labels can be found here.

One entry consists of three (2) bottles. To assure the anonymity of brewer, bottles must be standardized to the current AHA competition requirements: 10-14 oz bottles with no paper or inked labels, raised glass brand-name designs or any identifying or distinguishing marks on the bottle or cap identifying the brewer. Be sure that you enter your beer into the proper style category. Styles accepted include all styles listed in 2008 AHA Category Descriptions. Entries become property of The Beer Nut and will not be returned.

The Beehive Brew-Off is open to all recognized beer categories. The 2008 edition of the BJCP Style Guidelines will be used to judge entries. It is the brewer's responsibility to determine the correct category/subcategory to enter their beers, and to provide additional information where required.

Depending on the number of entries and category distribution, categories and subcategories may be combined or separated for judging and awards purposes. These judging table breakdowns will not be available prior to the competition and will be determined by the competition committee once all the entries have been processed.

Utah's Home Brew Bill Latest & Rêve Returns

The Utah Senate Business & Labor Committee passed HB51 unanimously yesterday!

American Homebrewers Association Director Gary Glass flew in to Salt Lake to testified for the bill during the Senate Committee hearing on homebrew legalization efforts.

The bill's next stop is to go before the Senate floor for a vote.

Also, RedRock's Rêve a Belgian Style Triple is finally back. The Award winning brew's second edition was released yesterday at RedRock's two locations and select bars. The brew is a limited edition and won't be around long, so don't procrastinate on this one.

Also, also... if your bumpin' around Squatters today wish The Queen of Beers: Jennifer Talley a Happy Birthday! I won't say how old she is, but I think 28 is a nice round number.
