Squatters/Wasatch Release Cans

Remember this ad? It contained the aptly named slogan, "Nice Cans"! It was for the old St. Provo Girl brand from Squatters (now just Provo Girl) that had to go away in 2001 because tiny micro breweries were such a threat to international conglomerates. Yeah, we're talking about you St. Paulie Girl!

These were some of the first canned beers to feature products from the state of Utah since the 1960's. They were a little ahead of their time, while they sold - they never really caught on with beer snobs and they eventually went away.

Now craft cans are much more widely accepted with "reglar folk" and "beer dorks" alike. It's a better package for the product and it's much more conducive to Utah's active - high desert lifestyle.

Lead by Bohemian Brewing, Moab, Uinta and now the Utah Brewers Cooperative are now offering canned beer. Four local favorites (new & old) are (and will be) for sale now and ready for consumption. Hop Rising Double IPA and Full Suspension Pale Ale are the first beers from the Squatters camp and Ghostrider White IPA from the Wasatch side. Look for Wasatch's Apricot Hefeweizen in cans as well soon.

As of today, just Full Suspension and GhostRider are available and they're at the Beer Store - 1763 South 300 West, Salt Lake City. What do you think, Are you down with this canned beer trend?

We have more cool beer news set for tomorrow- Stay Tuned!

Cheers!

Two Oktoberfests - One Weekend - No Waiting

The Utah Beer Festival isn't the only option for the intermountain beer geek this weekend, a much older tradition also begins this weekend, Snowbird's Oktoberfest. I've been writing about the Bird's Oktoberfest for years, not much has changed, except for the beer. Every year the beer options get better and better.

So choose a day over the next dozen or so weekends get your ass up Little Cottonwood Canyon to enjoy one of the most picturesque festivals in the west. Oktoberfest is every Saturday and Sunday from noon to six.

Remember to bring your mug from previous years, they'll still fill 'em!

Also today, the Bohemian Brewery is releasing their seasonal Oktoberfest beer at the pub in Midvale. Get in on a Brewery tour and Bohemian Mug w/fill for $10 at 6:30pm. This beer will be poured at Oktoberfest as well.

Prost!

New Squatters Cans

If you go back a few years you may recall seeing Squatters Chasing Tail & Provo Girl in cans. They weren't around too long, they may have been ahead of the game or they may have been stuck with the old "can stigma". For whatever reason they're gone, but the Utah Brewers Cooperative will soon be breathing new life into the Squatters/Wasatch can program with the debut of the brewery's new canning line.

Look for two new canned brands to hit shelves sometime in the next few months Full Suspension Pale Ale & Hop Rising. I believe this is the first canning line at the UBC, the previous canning program was packaged out of state.

Uinta, Bohemian and Moab has all seen great success with their canning lines, what other Squatters/Wasatch brands would you like to see in cans?

Cheers!

Another "Can" Do Attitude

If you had any doubts, cans are the thing right now. Every local brewery that has embraced them has found success with the once shunned containers. Bohemian Brewing started with 'em, Moab Brewing came next, with Uinta close behind; now the Utah Brewers Cooperative is entering the game (again) with their own canning line.

The Wasatch/Squatters brands are no stranger to cans, it wasn't too long ago that you may remember seeing some of their canned products on grocery store shelves around the state. They may have been slightly ahead of the curve and people were likely hesitant to trust their craft brands to packaging that had a bad rep. Those canned beers were not packaged in Utah, these will be.

It looks like the new cans will have a new look and they'll be starting with two Squatters brands, Full Suspension Pale Ale and Hop Rising. What do you guys think of the new trend and what beers/breweries would you like to see in cans?

Cheers!

New Beer Friday! 5/17/13

Nothing really new today, but one of my favorite Epic seasonals, Hop Syndrome returns today. Release #11 is a little different this time. It's hopped with whole leaf Aramis hops that lends a spicy aroma. The addition of  Lemon Drop hops add a light fruitiness and accentuate the clean pilsner finish, or so I'm told. Available at Epic's bottle shop today.

Deschutes' Fresh Squeeze IPA may or may not make an appearance at the Beerhive today. Del said, his distributor had some and it's on it's way to him, but this beer is not currently in production, so I don't know what the Hell to think, if it does show up we'll let you know. He also mention a shload of Lagunitas seasonal have returned and should be available late this afternoon.

And a reminder of today's Craft Beer Week Events:

Mountain Brewers Festival 2013

Beer festival season is upon us, and there is no better way to get things rolling here in the mountain west than the North American Brewers Association's Mountain Brewers Festival. Droves of Utahans flock across the Idaho boarder ever year for this annual event that many consider Utah's best beer festival.

If you've never been, just ask someone that has attended, you'll find a festival with a small town feel with big time brewery representation. Look for 70 plus breweries pouring a variety of their beers with many food vendors and it all goes to charity.

The festival takes place June 1st from 12-5pm at Sandy Down Race Track in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Tickets are available online or can be purchased locally at Uinta, Roosters & Bohemian Breweries. $25 Advanced | $30 at the gate. Note you'll need cash or check to purchase tickets at the three Utah breweries.

We recommend getting a hotel for the night, there are many affordable hotels, motels & campgrounds in the area. we're happy to answer any questions about the fest.

Cheers!

If your going to be out of town and want to find out what's happening nationally, follow this link.

You thought I forgot that it's New Beer Friday, didn't you? Bohemian Brewing has something new to help ring in the warm weather

Noble Hefeweizen is a Bavarian-style hefeweizen. White wheat and Munich malts give this beer a rich, sweet body while staying light and easy to drink. But the star of the beer is the traditional yeast, originating from the Bavarian monastery of Andechs, adding banana, clove, and bubble gum characters. It's going to be hot this weekend, sounds like the perfect beer to enjoy in the sun!

Cheers!

Bohemian Munich Dark Lager

A lot of B.S. has occupied our time over the last few days, you could probably use a beer, something new? We have what the doctor ordered. Bohemian Munich Dark Lager is Bohemian Brewing's newest seasonal. This classic lager traditionally hails from the Bavarian city of Munich. It pours a brilliant dark brown with flavors of toast and sweet malt. A touch of hops adds the perfect balance for a crisp, smooth finish. Only Available at The Bohemian Brewery.
Prost!

New Beer Friday: 2/22/13

This weekend's storm may have us all on interlodge alert. If that's the case, it's a good thing that there are some great new beer options to help us get through our cabin fever.

Bohemian Brewery Dunkelweizen: Bohemian’s latest seasonal is a Dunkelweizen,
or dark wheat beer, brewed with yeast from the Bavarian monastery of Andechs. The banana and
clove characters of the yeast meld perfectly with the bready, sweet caramel of the wheat malts to create
this delicious wheat beer.

These Samuel Adams beers have been floating around for the last couple of weeks.

Samuel Adams Latitude 48 IPA 2013 - Mosaic: The nose is of  pine, tropical fruits &berries. The taste starts with some initial citrus notes then trabsition to a smack of pine and earth. Some nice caramel and toffee flavors round out the end and go well with the hops. Bitterness is moderate with a slightly sticky finish. A surprisingly nice IPA.

Samuel Adams Alpine Spring: The nose is of grass, lemon, & white pepper. The taste starts with an  herbal bitterness against some clean, almost honey-sweet malt. Light sulfur notes round out the finish. Quite a nice Zwiklebier.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 1/25/13

As you've probably noticed there hasn't been much action happening on the beer front lately. Luckily we still have New Beer Friday!

Bohemian Kleinbock: you may have noticed that there has been a bit of a Renaissance at the Bohemian Brewery lately. Seasonal beer have been hitting the taps like crazy, their latest offering is called Kleinbock.  Bock beers are rich malty beers traditionally stronger in alcohol and brewed during winter and spring.  Bohemians Kleinbock, or wee bock, tries to capture the fantastic character of these beers but stay within Utah’s draft laws.  It pours a bright, deep golden color with a nice white head.  It has smooth bready malt sweetness with a clean finish and balanced hop flavor but minimal aroma.  Available exclusively at the Bohemian Brewery.

RedRock Chili Porter: I have not had this one yet but here's one readers description. The spice and chocolate balance each other out perfectly. Chocolate first followed by spice.

Ovila Belgian Style Golden: The nose is full of biscuit malt, with a dose of Belgian yeast and citrus with a little bit of cinnamon and coriander. The flavor has a lot of malt and yeast character, as well as some sugar, lemons and oranges. The alcohol is noticeable but the beer is still easy to drink.

Returning Favorites

Sierra Nevada Tumbler:  Heavily roasted with a hint of the campfire charcoal, the nutty blend is sweet and slightly dark at the same time.

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye: The nose is earthy and malty with piney resins. The flavor starts piney with a complex grainy malt character. Next comes hints of cocoa and a mild rye spiciness. The finish is dry and piney. This is very much like a spicy SN Celebration in that it’s got good hop character, its solidly built and very dense for the 6.6% ABV. Very clean and balanced.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 12/28/12

There's one new beer today. It's local & made with rye. Your gunna love it!

Bohemian's Keller Rye: This is Bohemian’s latest seasonal. Keller Rye is an unfiltered rye lager.  Brewed with Köln and Munich malts it pours an orange, copper color and has a smooth sweet malt character up front with hints of spicy rye in the back end. German Hallertau Hersbrucker hops dry out the finish to bring crisp balance to this very drinkable lager.

Returning Favorite.

Epic's Santa Cruz: This "Brown IPA" is an interpret of the recent Black IPA trend. The Santa Cruz Brown Ale is a true hybrid. For this beer Epic combined the rich malty backbone and color of an American brown ale with piney, resinous American hops, creating a completely new and unique type of beer. Easily one of my favorite Epic beers.

Uinta's Sea Legs Baltic Porter is finally available for sale as well. @ Uinta's Bottleshop

Cheers!

The Fifth Beer o' Xmas 2012: Bohemian's Czech Pilsner

The fifth Beer o' Xmas that the Beer Gnerd pushed on thee? A brilliant Czech style Pilsner, courtesy of Bohemian Brewing.

Pours a hazy straw color with a nice, sturdy two fingers of foam. The nose is crisp and clean with nice spicy Saaz hop aromas. Toasted malts are also strong in the background. The taste is pleasantly crisp with a firm Pilsner malt body that lets the spicy hop notes shine in the finish. Well balanced. There are some peppery notes that hang in there for a short time but then leaves the palate clean. Light to medium body, but it does possess a sturdy mouthfeel. It's gentle carbonation makes it feel almost creamy.

Prost!

Bohemian's Fall Festbier

There's a new Autumn seasonal available at the Bohemian Brewery right now called, Fall Festbier.

This one is a Schwarzbier with nice, dark garnet and mahogany hues. The flavor profile is big and roasty with a nice malty character that balances nice with soft biscuit notes mid-palate. The finish has hints of caramel and toffee. Only available at the brewpub for a limited time.

Prost!

So Long, Joe

Sad news this morning. Friend and Bohemian Brewery owner, Joe Petras passed away in his sleep early yesterday morning at his home in Salt Lake City.

Joe's success was due in part to that which drives all immigrants to build a better life for themselves, a strong desire to take what they know, build upon it and make it their own. Joe knew beer, Czech beer. When he started the Bohemian Brewery some ten years ago many thought it would never fly, just like all the other failed breweries that had occupied the space previously.

With a narrow focus on lagered, European styles of beer, Petras using what many would call outdated methods, created some of the most enjoyable lagers in town. Lagers that helped me personally rediscover the joys of Pilseners. We'll miss you, Joe. Your laugh, your sometime grumpy disposition and the way you flirted with our girlfriends and wives. If you have the time, hoist a beer for Joe. Preferable a Pilsener.

Na zdraví!

New Beer Friday 9/21/12

RedRock Brewing has had a lot of luck with their Nut Brown Ale. I believe it is their most notable beer, winning dozens of awards over the last decade. Beer Yogi, Kevin Templin hopes lightening strikes twice with their newest release, Bobcat Brown Ale. It still has the same great malty/nutty profile with a bit more alcohol and hop smack.

The nose is roasty and nutty with notes of coffee and chocolate. It has a nice, roasted, nutty flavor that exhibits good balance with the abundant piny hop notes. There are notes of toffee and coffee in the end as well. It's very satisfying and drinkable with a soft medium body and dry finish. Very nice get some before it's gone.

The next beer has been around for a few weeks, but unless you've made it up to Snowbird's Oktoberfest you may not have tried it. Bohemian Brewing's Oktoberfest Bier is session marzen that has all the flavor of a tradition oktoberfest packed into a 4% package. The nose contains caramelized malts, fruit, some grassy hops and spices. The taste starts out sweet with flavors of fruit and caramel. Then some breadiness comes in from a hearty malt character and lager yeast. The hops presence is mild but brings some balance. Another excellent lager from Bohemian!

Now we have Fresh Cask Friday! Last month Hopper's Brewmaster and Secret Agent, Donovan Steele introduced us to his new cask program. Every month he'll take one of his beers,  alter it slightly - two different ways and present it to you for your impressions.

This month Donovan has selected his Madame X Stout. Both firkins (casks) have French Oak. One with Ethiopian Coffee added and the other with roasted Ghana Cacao nibs. Both will be tapped at 5pm today, so people can try them side-by-side or blend the two if desired. These cask beers are only available until they run dry. I seriously doubt they'll last past 10pm.

Prost!

Reminder: Beerfest This Saturday!

Remember the 18th Annual Mountain Brewers Festival is this Saturday (June, 2). I was given an update on the number of breweries participating this year event.... it's huge!!!

There will be 82 breweries participating and that doesn't include contributions from Idaho Falls' local distributors!
There could be upwards of 90 breweries represented. Look for beers from breweries such as Stone, 21st Amendment and Elysian. Plus a shload of  regional favorites.

The weather is looking to be perfect and I believe Utah's allotment of tickets are close to being sold out. Check with Uinta, Bohemian & Roosters to see if they still have any; if not? they can be purchased at the gate; the day of the fest. Who's going?

Cheers!
