Beer festival season is upon us, and there is no better way to get things rolling here in the mountain west than the North American Brewers Association's Mountain Brewers Festival. Droves of Utahans flock across the Idaho boarder ever year for this annual event that many consider Utah's best beer festival.
If you've never been, just ask someone that has attended, you'll find a festival with a small town feel with big time brewery representation. Look for 70 plus breweries pouring a variety of their beers with many food vendors and it all goes to charity.
The festival takes place June 1st from 12-5pm at Sandy Down Race Track in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Tickets are available online or can be purchased locally at Uinta, Roosters & Bohemian Breweries. $25 Advanced | $30 at the gate. Note you'll need cash or check to purchase tickets at the three Utah breweries.
We recommend getting a hotel for the night, there are many affordable hotels, motels & campgrounds in the area. we're happy to answer any questions about the fest.
Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/31/13
Where up in Idaho Falls this week judging the beer competition part of the Mountain Brewers Festival. I fyou've got nothing going on this weekend, you really need to get your asses up here, there will be a lot going on. If you can't there are some new beers for you, maybe you can have your own little beerfest?
Uinta Brewing has finally released their long awaited Pro/Am collaboration beer Cahoots Double Rye IPA, brewed in with decorated local homebrewer, Chris Detrick.
In the summer of 2012, Uinta head brewer Kevin Ely
in cahoots with (see what they did there?) Chris Detrick, began the
research and development process for Uinta's first Cahoots. Together,
Detrick and Uinta developed a Double Rye IPA, a bigger, bolder, hoppier
version of Detrick's award winning Rye IPA recipe.
Two types of malted rye and loads of malted barley combine with CTZ and Chinook hop varieties to
create this subtly spicy and distinctly hoppy beer. Bold and rich,
Cahoots Double Rye IPA is bottle conditioned and has an ABV of 9.4%.
Scheduled to hit select shelves in early June, Cahoots is a limited
release beer, only 120bbls were produced. For sale only at the brewery for now, if your attending the Mountain Brewers Festival tomorrow you will also find it there.
Samuel Adams Chainbreaker White IPA: Citrus and fresh hops in the nose, light notes of spice and funk. Crackery malts on the tongue, citrus and piney hops, acidic wheat profile, and spicy yeast. Good for the style. Light-medium body and easily drinkable. @DABC
Don't forget there's also the new Avenues Proper beers are out. The Proper Beer, Patersbier & Slaintè Stout.
Cheers!

2009 Mountain Brewers Festival
Alright kids, it's time to start thinking "Beer". Well - we're always talking beer around here, but in thirty days the 15th annual Mountain Brewers Festival returns, and if you've never made the short roadie north to Idaho Falls your really missing-out. Besides being Utah's best beer festival MBF is also a sanctioned NABA Brewing competion.Judges at the annual event include brew masters from major national breweries as well as experts from small, independent breweries. Also judging are beer journalists and certified judges. Evaluation and judging of beers are conducted in blind tasting sessions which lead to the award of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.
Over eighty breweries will be offering hundreds of beers from all over the world for just one low price.
Tickets will be available in town shortly at local breweries and brewpubs as well as on line for around 20 bucks or 25 the day of. Even though it's not a terribly long drive I'd encourage picking up a hotel room. Trust me you'll be glad you did. Cheers!

The 2012 Mountain Brewers Festival
I was going to spend this time talking to you about the 2012 Mountain Brewers Festival, then I realized that there's really no need. If you've attended the annual event you know what it's all about and you've likely already made your plans and have made your reservation at the place that will shelter your hangover.
If for some strange reason you've missed one of my million posts on MBF, let me just say these four things. Approx 35 breweries, 140 different beers, less than 3 hours away & most importantly, no Utah bullshit! Yup, that right all that shit that pisses you off here, ain't happening in Idaho Falls. That right there is worth the price of admission.
Speaking of admission, tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the gate. Tickets will be available for purchase after April 20 at Bohemian Brewery, Rooster's Brewing & Uinta Brewing. This will get you access to unlimited 4 oz. pours from at least 35 breweries.
This is mostly a festival for western breweries, but look for offering from as far away as the eastern U.S., Germany and Belgium.
So save the date. June 2, 2012. Hope to see you there!
Cheers!

The 2010 Mountain Brewers Festival
For nearly the past decade we've been referring to the Mountain Brewers Beer Festival in Idaho Falls, Idaho as Utah's best beer festival. It really is. It's proximity to northern Utah and wide range of participating breweries makes it a great one-two punch. As if all that good beer wasn't enough to get you to IF, the Fest is also home to the The North American Beer Awards. The Awards are a unique event sanctioned by the North American Brewers Association. The competition provides an opportunity for the beers you love to be judged by qualified judges against the best beers in the country. Last year over 1,200 beers were judged!
This years beer fest will be held rain or shine on June 5th, 2010 at the Sandy Downs. Besides beer there will be tons of food, music and free shuttles to take you to and from the fest.
Advanced tickets for the beer fest are available now at the Bohemian Brewery, Uinta Brewing and Roosters Brewing. Tickets are $20 ($25 at the door) Also, the breweries have asked for cash only for ticket sales.
If you think your going to make it, post a yea or nay in the comments section or on the Forum. It's by no means an RSVP. I just thought it'd be nice to give people an idea of who to look for there.
Cheers!

Evanston's First Beer Festival
*****************click here for updated info************It's looking like mid 2009 will be known as the Summer of the Beerfest. The city of Evanston, Wyoming will be hold it's first ever beer festival on Saturday, July 11, 2009. The name, times, etc., are still to be decided on by the committee, but it looks like things are a go.
This is a great town to hold a beerfest. It's proximity to the Wasatch Front provides a quick & easy drive, the city has plenty of lodging, The town is full of bars and most importantly it doesn't have Utah's bullshit beer restrictions. You could actually get a high abv Utah beer on tap! Wahoo! Not to mention other great regional craft beers to sample. We'll keep you up to date on all the particulars, but for now just mark the date on your calendar.
Also coming this summer is the annual Mountain Brewers Festival in Idaho Falls, Idaho. A slightly longer drive(2.5 hours from my door) but well worth checking out.
And making it's triumphant return in late summer the Utah Brewers Festival. No details are available yet on exactly when, but organizers tell me it'll be more like it was in the Good ol' days (mid-early nineties) when it was less about music (Blues & Brews Festival) and more about beer.
Cheers!

The 2012 Utah Beer Festival
If the Mountain Brewers festival is too far of a drive for you or it doesn't quite satisfy your beerfest quota, the 2012 Utah Beer Festival should put you in your happy place.
In previous years the Utah Beer Festival has been held at Washington Square in downtown SLC. This year it's moving back to the newly remodeled Gallivan Center where most of our local beerfests have been held. This year the beerfest will be held on August 26.
This beerfest has sparked a lot of debate in the beer community. Many have called it unorganized and poorly planned. I personally don't think this is the case. Yes, the crowds are massive an the lines are brutally long, but in my opinion the festival as it is now is to small for the size of the Wasatch Front & Back. Here's my reasoning.
Too few breweries participate: Utah breweries are great, but the number of participating breweries can't possibly meet the publics demand unless each brewery triples or Quadruples their ability to serve.
Bring in out of state breweries: This would be nice and many out of state breweries would love to participate, but none are willing to endure the cost of bringing in thousands and thousands of bottles, when kegs are their preferred option. which they're not allowed to do by Utah Law.
Real estate: Washington Square was a full city block and it was never utilized. The Gallivan Center is much smaller and all of it will be utilized. This may cause more crowding and line problems if the numbers of tickets aren't greatly reduced.
The Number of Days: This in my opinion is the real key to making this a success. A two or three day festival would greatly reduces the burden on all parties involved. Brewers wouldn't need to increase their resources, crowd size could be limited and organizers could still make their bottom lines. Most everyone would be happy.
I've always had a great time at the UBF. I'd love to see it become life long tradition. What are your thought, anything I missed?
Cheers!

In Case You Need Some Incentive...
Here's the list of some of the breweries that will be pouring their fine suds at next week's Mountain Brewers Festival in Idaho Falls, Idaho. One of the great things about this festival is that most of the participating breweries are regional. These are places that your most likely to encounter on your travels throughout the mountain west. Luckily for you they're all in one place on Saturday June 7th. Hope to see you there!

The Utah Beer Year in Review
A lot of good and a little bad came to the Utah beer community in '07. Here's a brief review of high and low lights.
The year started appropriately enough our usual winter weather phenomena The Inversion. And Desert Edge Brewer ---- wasted no time in concocting a tasty companion to the murky winter air. Named coincidentally Inversion. It's a nice lite, moderately smokey Rauchbier with a nice bed of malt hops and a whole lotta smoke.
Another style out of the norm that made it's way into local brew pubs was the Flanders Brown Ale style that has it's origins from the Flemish region of Belgium. Jenny Talley from Squatters put together this authentic sour Belgian farmhouse ale with tart cherry accents. Cherry Luv is a seasonal and has no set production schedule.
In February Fifty-four Barley Wines and ninety judges from all over North America converged at the Toronado in San Fransisco to enjoy and select the continents best. Uinta's XI Anniversary Barley Wine tied for third in the annual high octane competition.
Author and beer geek Del Vance published Beer in the Beehive: a History of Brewing in Utah. The book documents Utah's earliest beer producers from past to the present and the cultures that influenced them.
Squatters officially became the largest brewpub in the state expanding to take over the entire three storey historical building it occupies.
We learned in 2007 that the word Merlot is so offensive that it had to be stricken from the licence plate of Glenn Eurick's Merlot colored 1996 Mercedes Benz. After having the plate for ten years he was forced to give it up because it offended the delicate sensibilities of an anonymous caller.
We also learned that were on can tear down, another can rebuild. For the first time since the start of Prohibition, a Utahn will be producing home grown hooch from the states first legal distillery. David Perkins has some pretty great plans for the P.C. distillery, like a top to bottom renovation of the proposed property and a tasting room for patrons to sample the various spirits produced.
Following a nation-wide trend Utah beer makers started producing certified organic beers. Squatters was the first to offer it's Organic Amber Ale at they're brew pub. Uinta's Wildfire Pale Ale was fist to be offered in stores and bars.
Statistics released by the Brewers Association, shown that even though Utahns drink less beer than the rest of the nation our breweries do very well in sales. Two of Utah's breweries ranked 47th & 49th out of just under 1400 craft breweries. Nearly 80% of all craft beer sales in the U.S. came from these 50 companies.
The Mountain Brewers Festival yielded many medals for Utah Breweries in June. Judges from all over the country, participated in blind tastings, awarding 18 medals to the most misunderstood beer producing state in the nation.
Some fresh blood (good & Bad) was injected into Uta's D.A.B.C. after three decades of stagnation.
In July we found that Utah loves Lions more that any other state. Lev Lion a Czech beer that has been in in Utah since the 1995 and is distributed in 12 states, Lev has, for some inexplicable reason, made its biggest splash in the Salt Lake City market. It sells better here than anywhere in the country since it was introduced. The state consumed 10,000 cases in '06.
Famed Beer Author and enthusiast Michael Jackson passed away at his home in London, England. He was arguably the foremost authority on beer and whiskey in the world.
The best reappearing & disappearing act of the year goes to the Utah Brewers Festival. After years of being on hiatus it's return was heralded as trip back to the good ol' days. But Mother Nature was nursing a hangover and it had to be cancelled due to weather. Bitch.
Zima, Smirnoff Ice, Mike's Hard Lemonade and the like were deemed to be too damn enticing for consumers by a member of the states booze patrol. The low alcohol beverages(4.0%abv) were to be moved to the state run liquor stores from grocery outlets so they would be harder to get and taxed at a much, much higher rate. After voting down the move. The Dabc council lost it's spine and decided it's a matter for the state legislature.
Utah scored big at the Great American Beer Festival. Three breweries won eight medals. As well as The Large Brew Pub & Brewer of the Year, going to RedRock and its Brewer Kevin Templin. Other beers awarded were Hopper's Lil' Pip's Mild(gold), Squatters' IPA(gold) & Their Organic Amber(silver).
The last quarter of '07 saw a influx of new imports to the state. Most from Belgium!
Finally, South Salt Lake City blames it's crime rate on the number of bars in their town. So no new licenses are to be issued and bar owners cannot sell their business with liquor licenses included.
All in all it was a good year. People are slowly getting it. Utah got some game!

2009 Utah Beer Year in Review - Part 2
May: The Hb51 Beer became reality. All of the brewpubs that participated in the brewing of the HB51 beer, kegged their individual interpretations on the collaboration amber ale. And as promised they were all very different. Four+
released a new beer Sum'r; made with lemony Sorachi Ace hops. Park City got a boost in the beer dept with the opening of Lindzee O' Michaels Park city's new place for top tier beers. Bohemian brewery's recreation of the original 1842 Czech Pilsner came to fruition and the boys nailed it with an incredible effort.
June: Utah Brewers received a shload of awards at the North American Brewers Association's - Mountain Brewers Festival In Idaho Falls, Idaho. Including six gold medals. Slug Magazine released it's second annual Beer Issue as the Logan Municipal Council repealed a law that restricted the sale of beer at city retail stores on Sundays. We also had a small beer festival in Snowbird. The Grill on the Hill featured a variety of locally made suds along with some killer BBQ. Local beer lover/craftsman Bryan Perkins, customized a Randalizer for the Bayou. It's basically a organoleptic hop transducer module (a hop cone filter) that grabs the oils off the hops in the Randall on the way from the keg to the tap/faucet transferring all the hoppy goodness into the beer, providing a pungent and fresh hop boost to the selected beer.
July: The Private Club system finally went the way of the Dodo and gave Utah citizens their dignity back. The Beerhive made it's long awaited debut after months and months of bureaucratic delays. Moab debuted and scored with it's Black IPA, the first in a trio of high ABV releases known as the Desert Select Series. Another new beer, Hop Rising came to liquor store shelves becoming Utah best selling high ABV beer. And frenzy and confusion surrounded the release of Uinta Brewing's first batch of their experimental Bourbon Barrel Barley Wine.
August: Thanks to the legalization of homebrewing in Utah, we were able to have our first ever BJC sanctioned home brew competition. Entries came from as far away as California, Texas and Nebraska. Craft beer options in St. George got thinner. Ruby River Steakhouse had closed it's St. George location as well as their Idaho Falls & Boise restaurants. On the heels of it's successful Black IPA debut Moab Brewing started selling the second beer in their Desert Select Series - The Moab Triple. Snowbird’s 37th Annual Oktoberfest returned, Attracting over 70,000 visitors over the sixteen-day celebration. August ended with The Book of Brew. RedRock Brewing Company's bible, per say. It chronicles most every one of the 40+ beers that Red Rock has brewed over the past 15 years.
We're in the home stretch. Hang in there with me!
Cheers

The 2008 Utah Beer Year in Review
January started with a new brew and and a new way of thinking for Wasatch Brewers. Greg Shcirf and his clan debuted the first in a new line of high gravity beers. Devistator Double Bock was an immediate hit, both with it's flavor and punch; as well as it's typical Schirf-esque label. Sam Adams Utopias made it's first appearance in Utah as well. This amped-up-super-uber-beer has it's own cult following. Some love it, some hate it. If your able to pony up the coin for the two-hundred-plus-dollar bottle you can decide for yourself.
Every year a local legislative douche-bag rears his or her's head and does their best to "protect the children" from whatever the Ivory Pulpit deems fit. It's usually the tiniest squeak from the previous Sundays sermon. January's douche-bag wanted to do-away with... and I'm not joking... ALL COLD BEER. Luckily, the bad man was dismissed. What an ass!
In February, McCools in South Jordan, Utah, became the 500th establishment in the US selling cask ales. This is the 3rd McCools in Utah, and all have cask beer engines. Also in February, the home brew bill died due to lack of time in the legislative session... more later.
March was rather quiet. However it provide the world with a shit-load of ammo for their ridicule Utah guns. Some "culture victim" decided that they would put together a "Root Beer" Pong league. Really! Root Beer Pong! These are the same types of people that concoct so called "Mock-tail" parties to experience a social tradition that's denied to them because of some primitive superstitions. If your going to set yourself apart, great! Just do it with a little integrity. Faux cussing, faux indecent attire (rolling up the magic jammies so they don't show), and now faux drinking of alcohol? Appearance and intention is just as important as the act. What's next a smoking section for bubble gum cigars or snorting lines of Fun Dip?
April saw the Utah Brewers Coop retain a place in America's top 50 breweries. Even though Utah is dead last in U.S. for beer consumption.
Utah's brewers had another great showing in The World Beer Cup. Local brewers entered 56 beers and came back with 6 medals. Two gold, three silver and a bronze. That may not sound like a lot, but it gave Utah's beers the fourth highest winning percentage by states entered.
In May, Four+ Brewing debuted a new beer. Rype a Belgian style wheat beer brewed with orange peel and spices. It tastes a lot like a Belgian Style Witbier but looks nothing like one. No matter, it's damn tasty!
Jon Lee one of the brewers at the Utah Brewer's Coop, had brewed a special, one-time beer in celebration of his first child. The Ava Lee Triple dials in at 9% ABV, but was only available in bottles at Squatters' three locations. This was a one time batch and will never be brewed again(maybe).
June brought with it warmer weather and Big Sky...Brewing, that is. Big Sky Brewing out of Missoula, Montana started shipping Moose Drool Brown Ale, Scape Goat Pale Ale and it's Big Sky IPA. And there was much rejoicing...Yehhhh!
Salt Lake Under ground Magazine(SLUG) reached new highs and lows. While they published their first ever issue devoted to beer(HIGH), They tapped me as Guest Contributor(LOW). They may never recover. On the heels of the SLUG issue, the 12th annual Mountain Brewers Fest: Salt Lake's Best Beer Festival(except it's in Idaho) was held in Idaho Falls. Utah's brewers shined, bringing home 19 medals and giving me the worst hangover in a decade.
