SB 314 Update

In committee this morning the legislators passed SB 314 unanimously. There with be a couple of amendments made in the Senate, but nothing that will affect consumers.

There was some clarification made in regards to beer and liquor purchasing times. The original wording gave the impression that all beer purchases would be pushed back from 10am to 11:30am and Liquor sales would move from noon to 11:30am.

This only affect restaurants with limited and full service liquor licenses. Not taverns or clubs. Everything stays the same with them.

I saw a lot of familiar faces in the crowd, thanks to you all for making the time.

Cheers!

Well this just blows.

I think we can look back to 2009-2010 as "the good old days" and tell our grandkids about the time we were treated like adults and not juvenile delinquents.

My assumption is that there will be no changes to the overall bill, so we will lose the ability to have a Beer Fest like last September and lose the 5 liter Chubbies? That is just a shame.

Is there any type of organized group dedicated to pushing for the normalizing of Utah's liquor laws? I imagine that the Utah Restaurant Association might be the biggest group pushing for this (at least I assume they would be).

Maybe it's time to start a lobbying organization called something like "Utahns For Normal Liquor Laws".

It seems the restaurant group only cares about getting a few more licenses available no matter the cost to anyone else like us. As long as that happens they don't care what other asinine crap is in the bill. This shit absolutely enrages me.

They're a lot of people working on the improvement of our liquor laws. Don't know about specific groups....but yes, the restaurant association pushes...yet alcohol manufactures are the biggest push followed by distributors,Out of State manufacturers, DABC license holders, THE DABC and retail outlets etc etc. The person responsible for the largest push to change our liquor/beer laws is non other than Greg Schirf, founder of Schirf Brewing Co and Wasatch Beers and Utah Brewers Co-op along with his partners Jeff Polycronis and Peter Cole of Squatters Pubs/Squatters Beers/Salt Lake Brewing Co and Utah Brewers Co-op with added help by our amazing lobbyist. These men are the ones who brought/wrote Utah the type 5 package agency, dining club license, Chubbies.....the first brew pub to ever exist in Utah etc etc...
If you want to help try and change laws yourself...first you have to understand how legislation works. It's a game and you have to be very smart, respectful, and open to the give and take of politics (especially in Utah ssssshhh theocracy). It's a bitch and with SB 314 we really won! You have no idea what other amendments were being proposed and it will stay that way since they have been crushed due to the help of our Co-op, distributors union and especially our lobbyist. That's the give and take. Gotta give up Chubby's for the integrity of other current laws not being manipulated in this bill.It is a shame yet we'll keep pushing toward the alcohol happiness for everyone! Sometimes you eat the bar...and sometimes the bar eats you!

Oh...and awesome to see you Mikey!!!! and PS utahbeer crew, I'm a bit sided when it comes to a lot of this stuff since I do work for the best damn company on the planet. There are more people to give thanks to than just my bosses yet that's where my interest lies. I'll sleep in the grave i dig...and my grave is lined with Squatters Full Suspension Pale Ale. Oh, and Kevin Crompton (Epic Brewing)...nice TV shot this morning on FOX. Your beard looks fantastic!

The media coverage is all suggesting this is a liberalization of Utah's liquor laws. Even a normalization. Which is it?

I haven't seen the media coverage yet....there are good things in this bill that specifically apply to DABC staff and the regulations placed upon them in their "outside of work" jobs....bribery staff stuff.....etc which is a wonderful thing to discuss since the rules placed on employee's beyond seated chair people (man or woman..trying to be PC) and heads of DABC are harsh and could be harsher but it's in the discussion faze still=cool=cuz of the bill, so win? some other stuff too that doesn't apply to the populous but alcohol related. Normalization shouldn't be something stated about Utah because it clearly isn't and is very proud of claiming the separation....ludicrous description. Yet it's like Santa...if you're good...then you'll get presents................once a year.

From what I've seen in the media it's portrayed as a positive step simply because it's providing a few more restaurant licenses even though they will just be gone quickly and are just converted tavern licenses. The beer angle is barely being mentioned and nobody seems to give a shit. The local media is really dropping the ball here, valentine should be getting raked over the coals by real reporters for being such a complete moron and asshole and not only hurting local beer lovers but also hurting the economy for not coming up with a real solution to the license issue and keeping utah's backward image intact, but of course he likes it that way.

Wow,i felt like i read a novel/watched a commercial after a few of those comments.
Really, OG Schirf and his employees should just quit the Holy Rolling High Horse We Changed Everything & Have the Best Beer in the World bullshit and stop pissing the right wing republican mormons off.
Chubbies were a gimmick to begin with like piercings, lame tattoos, and loud mouths.

Before we had chubbies and beer fest's we had private clubs! I guess 5 liters of beer seems better than 5 bucks a bar. I will enjoy my bloody mary at 11:30 on Sunday and my beer right after work. Either way, are we that desperate for alcohol? Cause I have enough.

Wow Ruby, you sound like a total asshole. Go flame on the KSL boards or something.

Rubies right on the money there, they really are obnoxious. I get it, Flaming "punk" rockers is just more fun than flaming the same posers on ksl.

Can't we all just get a bong?
Sorry, couldn't help it, just drank a Dubhe.

Chubby's aren't a gimmick. 5 litre cans are everywhere, just not here. But I sure am...i do have lame piercings and lame tattoo's and I'm certainly loud! Big whoop....but Greg Schirf being OG is a fact. If you don't want to hear that then don't pay attention to factual Utah beer history. And by pushing boundaries and "pissing off" republican moromons.....he creates change so.....you don't want change? cool....stay home and fight battles online.

Other than reviewing the entire SB 314 document, is there a summary of what changes were made by the passing of this bill?

Mentioned was:
-The serving time changes to 11:30? Is that only restaurants licenses? Are currant license holders grandfathered in?
-No more Chubbies
-Beer Fest? What restrictions were made to this? Tokens for drinks etc?

Didn't know if you guys saw this post I put up today. But there is a one word change in SB314 that will make it so bars can't offer daily beer specials anymore. This to curb "overconsumption"

Curious to know what you guys think.

I really wish the people who make these laws and idiots like Valentine who push their mormonistic views would actually get a job at a bar/restaurant and or start drinking to see what ass backward thinkers they are. Taking away drink specials? We already can't have happy hour, and what is happy hour in most states? A pub close to work where a bunch of coworkers meet after to work to get to know each other outside of work. Because mormons don't do this, they then view this as evil. Drink specials for the day are a good way to bring in a little business on what would be a very slow night. They are also designed to move product that is sitting stagnant on a shelf, or to promote a new product. If all this passes, here is the solution. Example; you can no longer have a discounted draft for the night, it has to be permanent, so you carry Bud Light on draft for $2 a pint. Every Tuesday, you get your shipment of one keg, and when the keg is done, you're out until next Tuesday. Same with Jack Daniels. Wednesday is $2 JD and coke night, you only carry one bottle and get it in on Wednesday, when the bottle is out, then the bar is out until next Wednesday. There will always be loopholes in idiotic ideas, Valentine needs start chasing chickens across the freeway during rush hour.
