New Beer Friday 8/11/17

In today's New Beer Friday we have some "out of the box" stuff to help you find your weekend groove.

Avenues Proper's Brett Pale Ale -  The nose has musty leather and funk with some tangerine and lemon notes. No tartness as expected. The flavor is tangerine peel with yeasty bread dough. some leather as well. Not a lot of sweetness, mostly hops and Brett. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, on the lighter and drier side. Mild hoppy bite in the finish. Tasty for sure and easy to drink. Brett pales aren't for everyone, gives this a try and let me know what you think. 4.0% ABV @ Avenues Proper (only)

Proper's Redrum - Red Ale. Not tried this one yet. 4.0% ABV @ Proper

Hopworks Urban Brewery's HUB Cider - Mostly tart apples with some sweet apple juice rounding out the back end. Not quite Jolly Rancher tart, but in that neighborhood. Nice cider. 6.8% ABV @ Beer Bar.

What did I miss? Please let us know.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 4/14/17

I hope your holiday break is nice and relaxing. You can tell spring is in the air by looking at the beverages we have today. Enjoy!

Epic's Oak and Orchard Syrah: Blueberry, Boysenberry and Black Currant - Haven't had this yet, it comes out today. Look for big berry flavors backed by tart vinous fruits. Can't wait! 8.5% ABV @ Epic

Mountain West Cider's  Desolation Prickly Pear Hard Cider - The nose has fresh apple skins and nondescript flower petals. The taste has tart apple, some apple tannins along with a vague citrus snap. It finishes with some botanical bitterness. Alcohol is very well hidden. Slightly sweeter and more tart than Ruby. Another highly drinkable cider from Mountain West. 6.9% ABV @ Mountain West Hard Cider. This goes on sale 3/15/17 at 11am.

HUB's Ferocious Citrus IPA -This must be very good, because it came and went before I had a chance to try it at Beer Bar. I assume more is coming. If you come across any, please let the rest of us know please! 6.2% ABV

Ninkasi's Velocihoptor - The nose has herbal hop, some orange peel and berries. The taste is much the same with caramel, berries, herbal hops, and an earthy finish. There is a high amount of bitterness on the palate as well. It's okay, didn't blow me away. 8.4% ABV @ Beer Bar

Ninkasi's Pacific Rain - The nose has lemon, tangerine and pine. The tastes is full of lemon and tangerine zest and is backed up with a perfect balance of caramel malts. Finishes crisp and refreshing. Highly drinkable. 5.4% ABV @ Beer Bar

New Beer Friday

Sorry New Beer Friday is a little late today, two homicides this morning have been messing with my blog time. Anyway, here ya go!

Hopworks Long Root Ale - It has a musty tangerine peel aroma with a taste that is semi-malty with a spiciness that may be the kernza. There's a nice mellow fruity taste as well with a bit of mosaic like hops. Nice pale ale. 5.5% ABV @ Beer Bar

2 Row Mosaic Random - The nose is full of melon, grapefruit, berries and pine. The taste is tropical and citrus. I get a little bit of malt, and touch of piney bitterness at the end but it's mainly juicy tropical hops and a little tartness, lemon peel. Another winner from Utah's IPA Machine. 8.5% ABV @ 2 Row, soon to better beer bars.

Stone Jindia Double IPA - The nose has Juniper, vague berries, grapefruit, and caramel. The taste is a muddled mash up of ginger, lemon and juniper with a bit of citrus peel to balance it out. You definitely get a gin feel from the juniper, but the ginger and lemon grass turn it into a spice bomb. If you love ginger? I'd give this a try. It's not quite my jam. 8.7% ABV @ Beerhive

Stone Pataskala Red IPA- The nose has a lot of malt and toffee with pine and orange peel. The taste is very malt forward as well, with a bit of spicy hops and big dry maltiness. Pine dominates the hop profile with a bit of citrus underneath. Finishes fairly dry. This may be more IPA than a Red. It's okay. 7.3% ABV @ BeerHive

Stone Give Me IPA or Give Me Death - The nose has berries mixed with citrus fruits and earthy tones. The taste starts bitter up front with a nice blend of raspberries, blackberries, pine, and herbal hops. The fruit is subtle but present, it works very well with the hops. The malts are spot on and provide a nice balance to this beer. Finishes semi-dry. My favorite of the new Stone releases. 8.0% ABV. @ BeerHive

Cheers!

New Beer Friday - Blue Hair Edition

As I'm going to the grocery store to pick up some of these new Selkirk Abby beers, I noticed that an AARP bus must have broken or something because I was by far the freshest face on the block by at least fifty years. The entire parking lot is full of "blue hairs" driving only Cadillacs, Buicks and Oldsmobiles. I try to park in the first stall I come to but was denied - due to a lady unloading her shopping cart with the speed and movement of C-3PO with a low battery.

So, I move on to the next row. There I find a massive, primer red El Dorado and newer taupe Buick Regal doing some kind of automotive ballet - as one lady tries to fine-tune her massive Detroit made vessel into one tiny stall as another tries to back out of the opposing stall. After this "dance of dragons" has ended I pull in to the recently vacated stall to find an older gentleman with his door swung wide open blocking the stall. He can't hear me yell, "excuse me"! because he's blasting a tirade from Rush Limbaugh on the radio about how "Hillary is gunna take all your health care" and "make you gay marry". So I honk, he gives me a shitty look, shuts his door and I finally move on into the store.

Or so I thought. As I try to enter the store through the single automated door - I arrive right behind two more members of the greatest generation as they try to figure out how to unplug the complimentary scooter - that they are apparently going to share because there was only one left. Now I'm finally inside and I remember. Fucking Dick's Market doesn't sell beer!

I work hard for New Beer Friday...

Hopworks Galactic Imperial Red Ale - It has an earthy ruby color with a strong caramel nose along with some grassy pine and a bit of citrusy floral notes. The taste is quite earthy and dank with a lot of  cake, caramel and molasses. Next comes a strong pine component with tropical hops backing it up.  Somewhat boozy but not overpowering. There's a lot going on here. 9.3% ABV @Beer Bar

Bohemian Oaked Amber Lager - The nose is malty with dry wood components. The taste has notes of toffee and butterscotch overlapping with milder notes of apple and leafy hops. The oak start to dominate by the back end, imparting flavors of woody vanilla that last through the finish and into the aftertaste. 4.0% ABV @ Bohemian

Selkirk Abbey Chapel - Pale golden color with a nose of clove, florals and banana. The taste follows with bready wheat, clove and coriander. The end is rounded out with a bit grassy and lemony hops. Finishes clean and somewhat dry. 4.0% ABV @ Grocery C-Stores.

Selkirk Abby IV Patersbier - malty nose to this, along with spicy, Belgian yeast notes. The taste starts with sweet, bready malts, caramel and clove. Tea and apple flavors come next backing up a bit of spicy, fruity Belgian yeast flavors. Mildly dry in the finish. Believe it or not, at 4% this may be too "full bodied" for the style. Still, a nice drinking table beer. @Grocery C-Stores.

Don't forget New Beer Friday is on KBER 101 at 3:30pm with Mick and Allen. Tune in if you can.

Prost!

New Beer Friday 3/4/16

This guy is making my brain hurt. Luckily New Beer Friday will numb us from the dumb.

The taste has roasted malt, chocolate, some slight coffee, and a bit of vanilla. Finishes on the bitter side with hops and char. A nice stout. 6.5% ABV @ Bayou, Beer Bar, Beerhive

Boulder - Shake Chocolate Porter: The nose is is full-on milk chocolate not much else. The taste is slightly sweet chocolate syrup and roasted malts followed by coffee-like bitterness. Very creamy texture with a semi-sweet, piney bitter finish. 5.9% ABV @ Bayou, DABC

HUB - IPX El Dorado: This IPA is huge with floral and tangerine and tangerine both in the nose and in the taste. Malts are subtle and sweet with a moderate to strong bitter finish. Really nice an easy drinking beer. 6.0% ABV @BeerHive, BeerBar

Hive - Ghost town Dry Oaked Mead: described as having a bourbon nose with clover, sage and oak on the tongue. Sounds wonderful. No ABV listed @ Hive Winery

Cheers!

Hopworks Strikes Utah Distrobution Deal

Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) has announced the expanded distribution of their world-class, sustainability brewed beer into Utah. Hopworks is partnering with General Distributing beginning this month to supply 16 oz. cans, 22 oz. bottles, and draft offerings throughout the Salt Lake City metropolitan region and outlying areas.

“General Distributing Company is very excited to partner with Hopworks Urban Brewery,” said General Distributing President Andy Zweber. “Their high-quality craft beer brewed in Portland, Oregon’s most sustainable brewery will be well-received by beer drinkers in environmentally-conscious Utah.”

Brands such as HUB’s award winning Organic Hopworks IPA and their seasonal Organic Abominable Winter Ale are available at bars, restaurants and liquor stores. HUB’s lower alcohol offerings, Organic Totally Radler and Nonstop Hef Hop, fall below Utah’s 4% alcohol limit and should be available in grocery stores served by General Distributing very soon.

Hopworks is no stranger to Salt Lake City. For years Beer Bar, a leading bar in identifying and bringing top craft brands to Salt Lake City, has sold a variety of Hopworks brands. “Hopworks holds a special place in our bar and our hearts,” says Duncan Burrell, Owner of Beer Bar. “I moved from Portland to Salt Lake City with a goal to get HUB’s beer here. Rich, the other owner, was on board immediately and the rest is history. We are excited to have their beer available on a regular basis.”

Cheers!

New Beer Friday- Seer Stone Edition

This week the Mormons released this image of what is said to be seer stone used by Joseph Smith to translate some "divine" texts into the Book of Mormon. As I look through this magic stone, all I can see is some serious New Beer Friday action and I think there's a peep show somewhere in there as well.... Yeah, I know - tough call, eh? Regardless, it's a pretty diverse New Beer Friday. Please enjoy!

Ballast Point - Habenero Sculpin: The nose has a bit of grapefruit and a hint of chille meat. The taste is where this one really shines. It begins with grapefruit peel and flesh, balanced by a light mango sweetness and pine. Next comes vegetal habanero with an increasing presence of grapefruit peel and more pine resin. Finish is highly spicy and modestly bitter with peppers, grapefruit peel and grainy malt. If you like pepper beers this one will be right up your zip code. There's a near perfect balance of west coast IPA and pepper heat. 7.0% ABV @ BeerHive, Beer Bar, Slackwater

Sierra Nevada - Harvest Newly Developed Hops IPA: Note: I've got a bit of a cold so my palate is off - please add a review in the comments if your experience is different with this one.  The nose is fruity and herbal - slightly dank as well. The taste follows, but not as fruity. Lots of dank hops with a hint of berry flavors. Light and refreshing. 6.5% ABV  @ BeerHive, Slackwater

Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) Abbey Ale: Me no try yet. It's described as having a nose of plums, raisins, caramel malt and Belgian spicing. Flavor is bitter light and dark dried fruit, sweet malt, finishing with an astringent sugary bitterness. Appropriate flavors here for a dark Belgian, but the spicing and bitterness overwhelm the malt body, unbalancing this ale. Medium bodied with some creaminess. 8.5% ABV @ Beer Bar

New Belgium - Long Table: Pours a hazy golden color with a thin foamy head. The nose is strong with coriander and rye malts. The taste starts on the hoppy side with Belgian yeast and spicy malts. Some citrus and berry notes come next with heavy coriander at the end. The finish has a bit of banana and very slight citrus. Good and refreshing. 6.2% ABV @Beer Bar, Slackwater, Bayou

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 2/27/15

First, let me preface this week's New Beer Friday by saying all of these beers will be available at the Beer Bar, later this (Friday) afternoon. Unless the DABC is unable to get them into their system on time, then they will be available Monday afternoon. Check back here or the Utah Beer Facebook page for updates on their availability.

The big news this week is Beer Bar's acquisition of Gigantic Brewing Company's brews. Gigantic makes a shload of highly regarded hoppy beers and is also known for their eye catching comic book style beer labels. Here's what made it to the market. I have no reviews for most of this week's new brews. Sorry.
Ginormous Imperial IPA
Gigantic IPA
Intensify Belgian IPA
Saboteur Baltic Porter
Catch 23 Experimental Pale Ale

Hopworks Urban Brewery Rise up Red - Pours a ruby/mahogany color with an fluffy off-white head filling top of the tulip glass. The nose is juicy with pineapple and grapefruit. some toffee sweetness as well. The taste starts with resiny grapefruit peel and juicy pineapple hops. Light caramel and toffee come next adding balance with a bit of berry fruitiness rounding out the back end. Moderately bitter finish. Not a brilliant red ale but quite tasty.

Hopworks Urban Brewery Organic Belgian Apple Ale - No review
Hopworks Urban Brewery Motherland Imperial Stout - No review
Hopworks Urban Brewery Nonstop Hefe Hop - No review

Base Camp Ultra Gnar Gnar IPA - No review

Oakshire The Perfect Storm Double IPA - No review. If this is half as good as their Watershed IPA we'll all be very happy hop heads.

This week the Annex has their Schwartz with Coffee bean and Cocoa Nibs in the firkin. Sounds damn yummy! Geoff tells me that last week's firkin was gone by 8pm, so don't procrastinate. Tapping is at 4:30pm. $3 Firkin Pints. Also look for a solid tap line up including Kettle Sour IPA, Berlinerweiss, Belgian Pale Ale, IPL single hopped with Centennial Hops and Milk Stout on Nitro.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday: Halloween Edition

Welcome to this special Halloween Edition of New Beer Friday! Today we have a new brews from local and out of state Booeries. See what I did there? I said, "booeries instead of "breweries".... because it's Halloween! ..... never mind, here are your beers.

Sadly, I've not had one of these beers. All descriptions are from the makers. The new beers from the Beer Bar are scheduled to arrive today and may not be available until after 5pm, so call first if your making a special trip.

Hoppers - Pumpkin Ale (Unspiced): Secret Agent and Hoppers Brewmaster Donovan Steele has a pumpkin ale - who doesn't, right? The difference is his has the pumpkin but no traditional pumpkin pie spices. The only spice like flavor is from the variety of hops used. The ale is made with fresh roasted pumpkin and pumpkin puree. Brown malt, caramel, honey malt, oats, and roasted barley to enhance the pumpkin flavors and texture. 4.0% ABV @ Hoppers

Base Camp - Northwest Fest
: Base Camp's take on the malt-forward fest biers of Bavaria. Extensive malt aroma and taste trials over the last two years led us in crafting this recipe, a subtly-hopped amber lager that walks the line between dry and full-bodied, not too sweet but definitely not lacking in malty goodness.  Lagered on our in-house toasted oak to round out this brew’s flavor profile. 5.6% ABV @ Beer Bar

Hopworks - Fuggle IPX: Fuggle hops are typically floral and grassy so look for that along with a bit of light caramel malt. 6.0% ABV @ Beer Bar

Hopworks - Abominable Winter Ale: This is described as a Winter IPA. Look for toasty Munich and light caramel malts with a medley of citrus fruit notes from the hops. @ Beer Bar

Woodchuck - Granny Smith Cider: Brilliantly clear golden hue. The nose is simply apple. The taste is tart green apple. Not jaw locking tart but enough to feel in your cheeks. The are some tannin notes in the end. Very drinkable. 5.0% ABV draft @ Beer Bar (This one is on right now)

By the way, Heretic Brewing did confirm that they are bringing their beers to SLC in early 2015.

Cheers!
