New Beer Friday!!! 12/14/12

Sierra Nevada Narwhal: This Imperial Stout pours dense black with about half a finger of espresso colored head. The nose is a rich blend of strong, dark roasted coffee, unsweetened chocolate, and roasted barley. There is also some earthy hops making its way into the mix. The taste begins with a big shot of strong coffee along with unsweetened chocolate and roasted barley. The end is full of bold, earthy hops and spicy hops. Full bodied with some noticeable alcohol. A very nice Impy Stout. @ Beerhive - DABC

Full Sail Session Fest: Pours a nice shiny copper color with just a bit of haze. Little bit of eggshell colored head makes a brief appearance. The nose is of toasted grain, slight caramel & floral hops in the background.  The taste starts with biscuits and toast alongside some caramel malty goodness make for a nice refreshing brew. Hops add just a bit to florals to balance things out. Mouthfeel is light, crisp, and refreshing. Flavors don't exactly 'wow' you but it's still got enough going on to keep it interesting. @ Beerhive - DABC

Pelican Bad Santa:  Pours a very dark redish brown color with a large, tight khaki head. The nose is hoppy with earthy spices, a bit of citrus and some sweet malt. The taste starts with dark, toasty malt and a blast of spicy & citrusy hops. A nice, coffee like astringency and lingering, bitterness round out the finish that flashes a hint of alcohol. Sorta has a cascadian dark ale feel to it. Quite nice. @ Beerhive

Fresh Cask Friday - This is the Pilsener: Today Donovan has an unfilteted version of his Bohemian-stye pils, one cask with loads of Belma hops and the other cask with a blend of Amarillo and Czech Saaz. Servered in imperial pint dimple steins at $2.50. Starts 5pm @ Hoppers.

Cheers!

100 internet points for everyone that posts which stores carry Narwhal.

I think Douglas spotted some at the 3300s. store. He gets the points.

I bought some at 3300 the other day.

Okay, points for Douglas and Chris. Don't spend them all in one place.

This is great news. I was really hoping to get some of the Narwhal, I am reading great reviews on it. To 33rd I will go this afternoon.

Cheers,
Scott

Stupid state stores with their random distribution.

When I went to 33rd, they had 7 bottles of Narwhal on the shelf. I only bought one because of the inflated 3.99 price. This is $9/4 pack in Vegas:
http://www.totalwine.com/eng/product/sierra-nevada-narwhal-imprl-stout/125722134

I have seen other listings around the country at 10 a 4 pack. Utah wants the equivalent of 16 a four pack.

I took three bottles with me to the counter with a different fourth bottle. I asked the cashier how much, my jaw dropped when he replied 3.99 (price had not been posted). I then took two of them back and chose some more reasonably priced bottles (I did not choose the Anderson Valley Summer Solstice). I have got to try it at least once. The cashier joked, "Welcome to Utah" after he told me the price. It took all that I have in me to not let a few choice words fly. All this after waiting six weeks more than the rest of the civilized states.

Some may argue that is just beer, and I should not get so worked up. It is so much more than beer. This is our freedom to choose the products we wish to legally consume.

I swear this state is going to drive me to home-brewing.

Cheers,
Scott

Just a little heads-up for everyone. Now that most breweries are required to have a distributor, the prices at liquor stores are gunna be higher for beer.

The distributors are not working for free, and the DABC is going to pass the cost on to you.

60% higher than the rest of the country? This does not jive. I will use Old Rasputin as an example. How is it that that one (I almost hate to say this publicly, I know what will happen) costs less than in other states? 1.58 a bottle retail is 6.32 a four pack, a great price for a great beer. On totalwine.com it is 8 in Las Vegas and I have seen threads on BA, where it is listed at about 10.

Saw the Narwhal at Foothill as well. It's probably getting a big distribution.
