House Bill 51, legislation to make it "officially" legal to home brew in Utah passed Unanimously in the House Business and Labor Committee yesterday.
At least a dozen or so home brew advocates attended the meeting (myself included) and faced surprisingly no opposition to the legislation's third time on the hill. The Bill will now move to both the House& Senate floors for official votes.
This should be a slam dunk. Through both committees the proposed legislation only met with one "No" vote. Keep-on your lawmakers back, and make sure he or she votes "yes" when it comes up.
Besides making home brewing legal the passage of this legislation could open the door to all kinds of home brew activities including home brew competitions and a category for it at the State Fair. Thanks to all who show'd-up and spoke in support. Cheers!

Very nice. Lets get this done quickly. Of course, little will change since it is basically legal anyway. But it's still a good move. When does the legislative session end again?

It was nice to see such a good showing from the home brewing community. I wish I would have known more or you by face and name.
Hopefully once this has passed, we can have more competitions and home brew festivals to bring Utah home brewers together.

This is excellent news. At the AHA dinner that was hosted by Squatters not long ago, Jenny said she'd love to be able to host competitions. This should make that a possibility I would think.
As a new homebrewer in Florida it completely mystifies me that this would be illegal ANYWHERE. Good luck with this legislation!

I have to apologize if you have covered this topic already...I've only just now stumbled, drunkenly, upon your site, and haven't had time to absorb all the info yet.
Last time I checked (late 2005 when moving from Alaska to Utah with one of those cute little "no effort necessary" beer-machines) it was legal to homebrew, but not more than 5 gallons at a time, or at least that was my understanding. I also read that it was not legal to store more than 5 gallons of alcoholic beverage in a single container. Has this changed? Was my old info incorrect? How much can I brew now? How large of a container may I store my beer in? Are kegs going to be legal? I am interested in home-brewing, but I already tried homegrowing and am on probation, so whatever I do going forward has to be legit, get it?
Theicidalmaniac, Homebrewing in Utah is illeagal and will remain so until the governor signs it into law within the next few weeks. Once signed the new law allowing homebrewing in Utah will go into effect june 2009. As far as quantities - You can brew up to one hundred gallons per year, per person(Max two adults per household).
