New Beer Friday 06/07/19

Boy, you miss one New Beer Friday and people start sending out the rescue dogs. Thanks for the concern though, everything is fine, I just went on vacation. This week we're back - big as ever with new suds to help get your weekend rolling.

Kiitos - Barrel Select Imperial Stout: Starts off with the sweet bourbon over roasted coffee and cocoa bean. The taste replicates the aroma boozy bourbon sweetness that slides into the finish. On the palate, this one sits at about a medium body with a great sipping quality about it.This is a beast at 13.2% - Available at Kiitos.

Kiitos - Huell Melon Pale: Named for the hops used, this pale ale starts with a grassy, euro-hop profile that then transitions into green melon rind. The malt sweetness is light and complimentary. Finishes quite bitter. 4.0% - Available at Kiitos.

2 Row - Extra: This copper hued lager has a light grain sweetness, that is also vaguely nutty and toasty. The hops are nice and floral with a hint of spice. This is super crushable and a highly drinkable lager. 5.0% - Available at  2 Row.

Fisher - Doc Sarvis: This pale ale has a grassy hop character, almost noble-like hop flavor with citrus peel and pineapple. It's got a nice hop flavor that turns a bit spicy towards the finish. 4.0% - Available at Fisher.

UTOG/Zolupez - Mandarina Kolsch: This new collaboration between Ogden's newest beer purveyors was just released yesterday, Sadly I missed it. Mandarina Bavaria hops have an intense pineapple, lemon and citrus flavors with a resinous, herbal followup. Should be tasty brew. 4.0% - Available at UTOG.

Talisman 3rd Anniversary Ale: This Flanders Red Wild Sour Ale was aged for 15 months in Pinot Noir Wine Barrels from Talisman Wines in Northern California. It will be released today at 11am in the brewery's bottle shop. 9.5% - Available at Talisman.

Toasted Barrel - Imperial Stout: This hit yesterday at the brewery and I missed it. 8.7% - Available at Toasted Barrel.

Elevation - Pineapple Acide: Mildly tart with mild pineapple notes and malts. There's some slight wheat cracker tones as well; finishing with a hint of spicy hop bitterness. 4.5% - Found at Bayou and DABC

Stone - Enjoy By 07/04/19: Piney, herbal and zesty up front with some sweet chewy malts backing it up. It's quite bitter in the finish, showcasing a huge hop bill. Probably not their best offering, but it's still pretty good. 9.4% - Found at Beerhive.

I'm sure I missed something, help us all out if I did. Cheers!

Utah's 2019 International Beer Awards Medalists

Last week I had the pleasure to participate in the International Beer Awards: a professional beer competition open to breweries from all over the world. For nearly a week we spent 8 hour combing over the some of the beers from all over North America (mostly the west) to find the best examples of craft and national brands. Utah's brewers did exceptionally well in the competition. Here's a list of Utah's medal winning beers, if you get a chance, get out and sample some of these brilliant lagers and ales. Click on the brewery for a better view and for the full list of winners, please click here.
Cheers!

New Beer Friday 5/24/19

This weather has me jonesing for barrel aged stouts. That's not ideal for the end of May; I'll persevere as I'm sure most of you will. Happy New Beer Friday.

Hopkins - Patchwork Pale Ale: This rotation beer will change periodically with various malts and hops. This version features pale malts from Solstice malts and the Pink Boots Society's hop blend. 4.0%. Available at Hopkins.

UTOG - Hazy Melon: This new high point offering features Huell Melon and Nugget hops, giving it notes of melon and strawberry. Oats are also added providing a nice silky mouthfeel. 5.5%. Available at UTOG.

Proper - Cool Runnings: Big guava aroma. Taste follows with a generous amount of fruit. It’s not dry, but appropriately sweet. Finishes with an herbal bite. Nice fruited pale. 4.0%. Available at Proper.

Epic - Tart & Hazy: This is a basically a Barrel Aged Sour IPA. This is NOT a kettle sour. Full funk is in play. Super fruity with balsamic, caramel & tangerine. It's Brett based sourness is nice and round with a slight vinegar finish. If you like barrel sours, your kick yourself if you miss this. 7.5%. Only available at Epic (Growlers to go).

Brewery Ommegang - Fruitanomyces: The fruits are vague; can't really tell too much about what's in here. Brett is prominent throughout with a nice subtle sourness. The gas is prickly and champagne-like. Nice beer. 5.3%. Found at Beer Bar.

Firestone - Mind Haze: Citrusy and tropical in the nose with a touch of earthy spice. Tastes pretty clean with notes of lemon, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, papaya, berry along with grainy malts and earthy spice. Overall a really nice smooth hazy IPA. 6.3%. Found at Beerhive.

Melvin - Cloudy 5000: Aromas of dank hops and citrus. The taste follows with broad malt sweetness, onion and a good dose of grapefruit and tropical flavors. Somewhat bitter finish. Not the best representation of the style, but it's ok. 8.5%. Found at Beerhive.

Special Acquisitions from the Bayou

These beers hail from Italy, Belgium and and England. Sorry no tastes on these yet.

Encircle Fundraiser at TF Brewing

Join us at Templin (TF) Brewing Company this Sunday May, 26th from Noon to 8pm for a fundraiser to support Encircle LGBTQ+ Family And Youth Resource Center.

Encircle seeks to deepen and enrich the conversation among communities of faith and LGBTQ+ people. By teaching individuals to love themselves and empowering families, Encircle helps cultivate an environment where LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive.

To help Encircle and their worthwhile cause we will beholding a silent auction with items donated from local business, TF beers of course, spirits and there will be a dunk tank. Yes, a dunk tank. Take this rare opportunity to send you favorite brewer, bartender and a smug beer writer into the murky depths while helping out this worthwhile cause.

If you can't (or can) attend, donations of bottle of water cans of soda and non-perishable snacks would be most welcome. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday and the Updated Craft Beer week Calendar for 5/17/19

What a huge week! There were a lot of small batches that were produced for craft beer week that may not have made it through to the end of the week, something that you may have tried didn't make it this far. That stuff that did was quite enjoyable. Here are your New Beer Friday options along with Friday's updated Craft Beer Week calendar. Prost!

Shades - Peach Cobbler: The nose is tart with peach, vanilla and graham crackers. The taste starts a little tart then, Bam! It tastes like peach cobbler. The peach takes on more unripened flavors due to the tartness, otherwise it's spot on flavor-wise. Great Beer! 6.3%. Available at Shades and Beerhive

2 Row - All About Apricot: This apricot sour leaps right out with musty stone fruit and tropical fragrances and funky brett. Looking much like fruit juice, the beer begins by layering the tongue with sweet, succulent apricot with hints of honey and sourdough mixed within. As the sweetness dissolves, its the tang of the apricot that lead the way. Juicy and slightly jammy, the sour ale underneath breaks through with its tart flavors of dry, peppery white wine, gooseberry and lemon. The barrels apply ample oak with hints of cork, cellar funk and a smack of horse blanket towards the finish. This is wonderful stuff, and one of the most audacious beers to come out of 2 Row in a while. 11.2% - Available at 2 Row this Saturday, currently for sale at Craft by Proper, Bayou, Beer Bar

Epic - Chasing Ghosts: This beer a nice hazy appearance, along with a nice, fruity nose featuring grapefruit, lemon peel, pineapple, and mango. The taste opens with lots of sweetness: melon, mango, and a hint of caramel, along with grapefruit and fresh pineapple. Towards the end, creamy caramel malts round out the perceived fruitiness It finishes sticky with low bitterness. This ale is light and crisp with lively carbonation and it drinks well below its 10.3% ABV. If you're a fan of this style (most of you are), this will make you extremely happy. At Epic and Bayou.

Shades - Light Lager: Surprisingly flavorful for a light beer, and it's drinkably smooth without veering into blandness, and little to no bitterness whatsoever. Nothing amazingly special, but you know that when you see the word "light." The colder, the better. A good alternative to the macro brands. 4.0%. Available at Shades and Dick n Dixie's

Kiitos - Mango and Pink Guava Milkshake: This one is super fruity; you can tell that a lot of mango and guava went into this. the lactose addition adds a good amount of sweetness, making it very desert like. A little bitterness in the finish would help its drinkability. Overall a solid brew. 4.0% - Available at Kiitos.

Bohemian - Kolschfusion: Aromas of pungent grassy hops, pine resin, pale bready malt and some light fruitiness. The taste starts with chewy malts and light fruitiness quickly giving way to the bright grassy hops, pine resin and some light sweetness. Finish is a little dry with plenty of hop bitterness that lingers on the palate.

UTOG Hefeweizen: This will be released later today at UTOG. Sorry, no notes. 4.0%.

New Beer Friday 5/3/19

Hopkins - Sugar House Pilsner: Bready and slightly grainy taste that is mixed with a little bit of a sweet harvest and stone fruit tastes with a little bit of caramel. As the taste advances more, grassy and herbal hops hit the tongue with a little bit of a floral hop coming in as well. Smooth and crisp; it leaves a zip of bitterness in the finish. 4.0%. Available at Hopkins.

Hopkins - Guava Goddess: I'm guessing this is golden ale? It has a clean malt base and it has some citrus, melon and grassy hops. The guava emerges next and it works pretty well with the hops; creating a nice, but subtle fruitiness. 4.0%. Available at Hopkins

Red Rock - Bier De Mars:  The aroma is a mix of Belgian yeast esters, candi sugar, clove, caramelized malts, with a touch of bread and citrus. Taste wise it starts off with some sweet caramelized malts with some candi sugar and a bit of fruity Belgian yeast esters. Through the middle, a bit of dark fruit comes through alongside some anise and some farmhouse flavors. The finish is a mix of anise, plum, a bit of bready and caramelized malts, and some Belgian yeast flavors. 7.0%. Available Saturday at Red Rock's Beer Store.

Policy Kings - Policy Sam IPA: Missed this one. 4.0%. Available at Policy Kings.

Bohemian - Lagerpalooza Baltic Porter: This beer smells big of freshly brewed black coffee with dark chocolate playing a part as well. The taste starts with big coffee upfront fades slightly and combines with the dark chocolate to create a great flavor combination. The doughy malts join the coffee and chocolate mid-palate and while all these flavors work through to the swallow dark fruit makes it's appearance. This is great representation of the style.7.3%. Available at Bohemian on Sunday, May 5th.

UTOG - Sour Time: Missed this one. 4.0%. Available at UTOG

Toasted Barrel - Barrel Aged Flanders Red: The smell is very subdued, almost faint. There are some tart cherries, some vinegar sour notes and maybe some soft grape skins way down deep.
The taste is much more bold than the smell. The tart vinegar, sweet/sharp cherries and grape skins hit with a nice sour blast, but not too sour. A nice sugared candy sweetness comes in briefly towards the end; before the sharp lemon zest and tart cherries boomerang back. The beer finishes on a nice dry sour note. One of my favorites from Toasted Barrel. 6.3%. Available at Toasted Barrel.

Cigar City - Oatmeal Raisin Stout: Do you like oatmeal raisin cookies? If you do, this is a no brainer. My only description for you is that it tastes like oatmeal raisin cookies. It's simply scrumptious. 5.5%. Available at DABC and Bayou

Besides these wonderful brews, there's a shload of beer related events to occupy your time this weekend as well.

Not only is it Star Wars Day on Saturday, but it's also the 10th Annual Tour De Brewtah! Take bicycles and beers combined them with a wonderful day and you get one of the best social events of the year. And if that's not enough, there's a beerfest afterwards to at the Gateway downtown. Get setup at https://www.tourdebrewtah.com/ (must be 21+)  Beer fest is all ages.

No matter if you're on you bike or not Red Rock's beer store will be releasing their newest brew, Bier De Mars. If that's not enough, Red Rock is also re-releasing their White Rainbow, White IPA. 443 n. 400 w. at 11am.

Fisher Brewing will be having a bash at the historic Fisher Mansion Saturday and Sunday. Look for pints of Fisher beer, music, bike valet, food trucks and it's free to enter. 1206 w. 200 s. Starts at Noon both days.

Lagerpalooza is happening at Bohemian Brewing Company. This is Utah's lager only homebrew competition. The judging will be completed and awards handed out May 5th during the Lagerpalooza event with last year's winning beer being served, as well as food, music and games. Local homebrewers will be there brewing also, so if you love beer, this is a great place to be.

Fleet Nights begins in SLC. Every Saturday night from May through September, rotating craft brewers will be pouring beers along with food trucks to fill your belly. Look for the shipping containers in the vacant lot at 855 s. 400 w.

Don't forget it's also the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Hit up the No Name Saloon's derby party where Mint Juleps, derby food, swag and a hat contest will be happening. They're off at 4:50 p.m. See (must be 21+).

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 4/26/19

Our New Beer Friday family may not be traditional, but we are interesting AF! This week's selection may not be huge but it's diverse a hell. Have an excellent weekend!

Proper - Hopothetical: This New England style IPA has a descent fruity/tropical nose that's full of the aromas most of you love. The taste has an Orange Julius vibe that is creamy, fruity and juicy. Very little bitterness; the 'juice' is really all that lingers. Crisp, medium body. 6.1% - Available at Proper and Craft.

UTOG Scottish Ale: This seems to be like a "wee peat" style of Scotch Ale. The aroma is malty with a bit of smoke, with little in the way of hops (which is appropriate). The taste starts lightly malty with toffee notes then transitions to a more smokey profile. The smoke comes of as phenolic and medicinal - sort of like a Band-Aid. 4.0% - Available at UTOG.

UTOG - Kolsch: This unfiltered Kolsch a hazy golden yellow appearance. The aroma is mostly light, toasted grains.

Shades Kveik #6: Apricot and peach are the featured flavors here. Of course the kveik base is nicely tart but the stone fruits used here pretty much run the show. Though the flavors can be somewhat similar, the apricots to me steal the show. Very fruity and tasty with zero bitterness. 6.3% - Available at Shades and most beer pubs.

Mother Earth - Four Seasons Imperial Stout: Missed this one; and it makes me sad, because it sounds delicious. This imperial stout is aged in bourbon barrels and was brewed with tart cherries and liquid cocoa. Sounds tasty, eh? 11.7% - Available at Beerhive, Slackwater.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday: 4/19/19

You don't have to appreciate everything in your life, but please don't abuse your New Beer Friday.

Saltfire - Gin Barrel Aged IPA:  Nice juniper aroma.  Right off the bat, the barrel pops with more generous berry notes. Then the spruce part comes in, it is more subdued, but it swirls around the berries like a Christmas tornado. Tangerine peel and orange zest round out the end. This is the second gin barrel aged IPA to come from a local brewery (shades had the first). You wouldn’t think a gin barrel aged IPA would work very well, but the juniper aspect is perfect with the hops used. 8.0% - Available at SaltFire starting today.

Uinta - "Get in Looser, We're Going Hopping": This Kolsch is hopped with the same blend that the recently released Pink Boots beer was made with. The hops dominate this beer. There’s lots of melon, grapefruit and berries. It reminds me a lot of a session brut IPA. Quite tasty! 4.0% - Only available at Uinta.

Desert Edge - Pro Tem Pale Ale 2:  This unfiltered pale ale has a hazy copper color. It features Idaho 7 and Kashmir hops. These bring forth a piney, floral and citrusy flavor. Light malt flavor, with high bitterness. It finishes dry. 4.0% -  Available at Desert Edge.

Firestone Walker - 805: This copper colored ale has an aroma of malt and hay. Flavor wise it has light mulch combined with floral hops with a grassy aftertaste.  It’s a pretty basic beer, nothing too spectacular. I will point out that it skunked after about a minute in the sun yesterday, so beware of that. 4.7% - Available at DABC, Beer Bar, Garage on Beck

Craft by Proper officially opens today! Sugar House's newest pub is billed as "Utah's only - Utah only - beer pub". Look for 36 taps and 80 to 90 different bottles and cans of all sizes to satify your Utah beer cravings.

Cheers!

New Brews Soon For You Bohemian, Red Rock, T.F. Brewing and Uinta

On a dreary Monday morning, I thought a little sunshine in the form of new brews, coming soon for you would be a simple way to cut through this soggy weather spell spell that we've had to endure. All of these beers are NOT out yet, but are are their respective schedules for release in the coming weeks or months.

Red Rock - Biere De Mars: [Pictures Above] Literally meaning “March Beer”, This French/Belgian ale is a type of low-alcohol lambic beer that was made from the second and/or third runnings from the lauter tun during the production of lambic beer. This beer looks to be less tart and more malt driven. ThisSpringtime ale will hopefully be coming our way soon. Hell, were halfway through April already. Look for this in Red Rock's 16 ounce bottles.

T.F. Brewing - Squirrel Juicy IPA: This high point IPA will follow the the New England IPA style by being high in tropical fruitiness and low on bitterness. In will hit in 16 ounce cans and dial in alcohol wise at 6.5%. This should be a big hit for those who aren't exactly big on traditional IPAs.

Level Crossing Soul Rex: This Double IPA will likely be around, sooner than later. Look for an IPA
driven by hops that lean towards tropical fruits, melon and citrus. This one will also hit in 16 ounce cans and have a respectable 8.6% alcohol content. So far Level Crossing has just offered up low point beers to get themselves established. This will likely be one of the first of many high points to make you swoon.

Uinta - Tu Meke Tart: This new beer part of Uinta's "Limited Release Series" will a variety of (as of yet undisclosed) New Zealand hops. The base beer will be a kettle sour, so look for a nice lemony tartness with a fair amount dry-hopping. I'd guess it will be close to a sour IPA. This beer will pop up at 6.5% and will be in uinta's 12 ounce cans.

Keep checking back, when these are official the where and when will show up here as soon as I get the word. Any thoughts on these new beers?

Prost!

New Beer Friday 4/12/19

Since all of the brewers in the area were busy out of town; attending the Craft Brewers Conference    there's not a lot happening this week. I did manage to find a few beers though. It's tough work, but someone got to do it.

Fisher Hayduke: This new pale ale has a nice citrus aroma and features a taste reminiscent of tangelo and lime with a healthy dose of bitter rind. Super drinkable. 4.0% - Available at Fisher

Proper Sour Rangers: This soured saison has a nice purple color with pink highlights. The aroma has a vague berry smell that is pleasing. The taste is tart for the most part, due to the sour base base beer. The blackberries used pile on, adding a little sweetness to counter. Some saison yeast is detected. If you like tart berries, you'll love this. 4.0% - Available at Proper.

Dogfish Head Dragons and Yum Yums: This tart ale is a collaboration with the Flaming Lips. Brewed with dragonfruit, yumberry, passion fruit, pear juice and black carrot juice. Sounds yummy. 6.5% - Available at DABC

Sierra Nevada Sierraveza: Biscuit forward with some grain sweetness. The hops are floral and grassy. Nice dry finish. A nice Mexican Style Lager. 5.0% - Available at Beer Bar, DABC

All of these JW Lees are available at the Bayou starting today. I have not tried any of these. They look damn tasty though, look at those vintages!

JW Lees - Harvest Ale 2002:

JW Lees - Harvest Ale ‘08:

JW Lees - Harvest Calvados 2012:

JW Lees - Harvest Calvados 2017:

JW Lees - Harvest  Lagavulin Cask:

JW Lees - Harvest Port 2013:

JW Lees - Harvest Sherry 2012:

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 4/5/19

After last week's massive New Beer/Brewery Friday, it was nice to have a chill beer "research" day. This week we have another solid, all local beer showing to end the work week.

Bohemian Ode to Solstice: This beer is made with malt from local maltster “Solstice Malt”. It is unfiltered and amber in color, using healthy amounts applewood smoked malt to provide an apparent yet subdued smoke character. Bready and biscuit notes add complexity for a beer that is smoked out and loc’ed out. 4.0% - Available at Bohemian

Avenues Proper - Blackcurrant and Blueberry Brett beer: The nose has currents, with tart brett funk and a light spice. Taste is full with complex red berry notes, and yeasty spice. The addition of the blueberry works well, as they are fairly light and add an additional flavor rather than take over the beer. The Brett is strong and very flavorful. Great stuff. There aren't many local breweries that are willing to put brettanomyces beers on draft, take advantage of this special beer. 4.0% only at Avenues Proper.

Proper Brewing - Apricot SkittleBrau: Missed this one yesterday. I hope to have tasting notes for you when New Beer Friday continues this afternoon at 3:30 on KBER 101 with Mick and Allen. Please tune in.

Level Crossing - Unfiltered Kölsch: A nice toasty aroma with hints of green melon. The taste follows with some toasty grains and biscuit flavors. The hops come in late and add citrus peel and honeydew flavors. Not exactly to style, due to the hops but it's damn tasty. 4.0% - Available later this afternoon at Level Crossing.

Fisher - Yet unnamed Sour beer with blood orange and black currents: Yogurt and berry aroma with a sharp tartness on the tongue. the berries are subtle at first but begin to pop through the tartness towards the end. Finishes dry. 4.0% - Available at Fisher.

Cheers!

The 10th Annual Tour De Brewtah

It's time to start thinking about the 10th Annual Tour De Brewtah, Salt Lake's best bicycle based bar crawl ever. If you've never had the pleasure, the Tour De Brewtah  is a one-day event open to cyclists of all abilities to tour local Salt Lake breweries and taste the finest craft beverages they have to offer.

In honor of the Tour's 10th anniversary, organizers have created a total of 10 routes, of varying difficulties to visit breweries both old and new throughout Salt Lake County and the City of Ogden. Yes you heard that right, this year has an Ogden route. This year's theme is "A Cosmic Experience" and just happens to fall on May the 4th which has commonly become known as Star Wars Day. Riders are encouraged to attend dressed in your most creative, out of this world costumes (that are bicycle friendly) and spend the afternoon enjoying the best of what Utah's craft brewers have to offer.

This year the Tour De Brewtah has also added the Local Beer Festival, where patrons who are unable to make the ride can still sample all of the finest products from our local craft producers in one spot. This year the event will call The Gateway home, both as the starting/finishing point as well as the spot for the beer fest.

Now for a little friendly advice: don't wait too long to register! This event has a set number of tickets and always sells out before the day of the event. Different routes have different price points and all routes include one drink ticket per stop; you are more than welcome to buy extra food and drink along the way, so don't forget some extra cash. For info on tickets and the route that's best for you follow this link to start your adventure.

The Tour De Brewtah also donates a percentage of the ticket purchase price to support local non-profits.

Looking forward to seeing you there, and Cheers! errr.....May the Force be With You!
