New Beer Friday/Utah Beer Challenge Winner

Happy Cinco De Mayo and Nueva Cerveza Viernes (New Beer Friday)! If you're looking for some locally made beer with some south of the boarder flare - Epic's Los Locos or Beerito from Oskar Blues/Utah Brewers Cooperativeare just a couple of the many options out there for you to try. If not? I found five new brews that I think will make you happy.

Roosters Femintation American Ale - Full of char and roasted malt. Piney hops back it up with subtle alcohol. Very clean finish. Probably my favorite Roosters beer ever.7.5% ABV @ Rooster, Slackwater

Stone Enjoy By 5/29/17 - Tangerine/Grapefruit and mango mostly with a good dose of malts - nice balance. Nice body with a fairly dry finish. Surprisingly drinkable for a 9.4 % ABV DIPA.It's Fresh, fresh, fresh! @ Bayou, Beer Bar, Slackwater, Beerhive

Stone Dayslayer IPL - This one is a winner. Citrus peel, melon, berries & herbal hops dominate. Some Vienna malts backing it up. Spicy & dry in the finish. Quite tasty, you should try this.7.5% ABV @ Beer Bar, Slackwater, Bayou

Talisman Saison - Missed out on trying this one. Look for earthy yeast tones, mild to moderate tartness. Lots of spice and with a medium bitterness. This is under their Season Ale label.

Proper Ragman Belgian IPA - This new higher alcohol version of their Belgo-IPA. The fruity and spicy esters from the yeast dominate the palate for the most part. The hop bill which comprises of some citrus peel flavors and botanicals play pretty well with these flavors. A fairly full bodied IPA. 6.0% ABV @ Proper Brewing

Today, you have declared that Shades of Pale's Grapefruit Revolution is the tastiest, locally made beer of them all. This sleeper, citrus bomb takes full advantage of it's name imparting huge citrus notes in a little IPA package. If you haven't had a chance to try this session-y dream you're really missing out. It's available at most grocery, C-stores and of course the brewery located at 2160 s. West Temple, Salt Lake City.

Trent/Alex/Marcio, I invite you to display this hastily crafted certificate of awesomeness wherever you see fit. Above the shitter comes to mind. Congrats again to Shades of Pale Brewing.

Thanks to everyone for participating in the High and Low Point Challenges. Feedback is always welcome.

Mikey's Citra IPL Returns

Last year about this time 2 Row's Brian Coleman and I were talking about beer. Yeah, shocking, right? Anywho, Brian was looking to brew something news and I was craving a not so typical, yet crushable lager for warm weather drinking. To my surprise, he liked my suggestion.

Basically I craved two of my favorite things, the clean drink ability of a Pilsner mixed with the citrusy smack of an American IPA. Within days our concept was in the tank and seven weeks later it
hit the shelves with much appreciated kudos from local beer nerds.

Last month, Brian and Assistant Beer Guru, Clay Turnbow put the Citra India Pale Lager back into the tank and decided to put a adequately handsome Hobbit on the label. The beer has that straight-up - 2 Row flavor punch and I'm honored to have my bobble-head adorned on it. Plus, I understand that Jason Stock was not available....

Mikey's Citra IPL is for sale right now at the brewery, Dick n' Dixies and The Bayou. Should be popping up today or tomorrow at Beer Bar, BeerHive and Slackwater.

Prost!

New beer Coming from Uinta and Proper Brewing

Some tasty, locally made treats will be headed your way in the coming weeks. First, from Uinta Brewing we have their new West Coast Style IPA. I got the opportunity to sample some of this - it emulates the style perfectly. Look for this sometime mid May.

Also coming to beer glass near you, Lei Effect. Akin to Proper's Lake Effect, this Gose style ale made with ancient Utah salt and Hawaiian Passion fruit should make this tart beer sing, and hopefully get those hips moving. Stay close for the release dates on both of these.

We've made it to the finals of the Utah Beer Challenge's Low Point Competition and it looks like session IPAs reign supreme. Shades of Pale's citrus bomb, Grapefruit Revolution goes up against RedRock's West Coast inspired IPA Junior.

Voting for the finals will end Thursday Morning and the winner will be announced on Friday.

New Beer Friday 4/28/17

As we bid farewell to this soggy April, our hearts turn to... ah screw it. It's F'n Friday! None of you want to hear me wax poetic. So, let's just get to the new suds on the list. And just to be clear, New Beer Friday is NOT a bar... but it probably should be.

Golden Road's Tart Mango Cart - I've not tried this yet. It's described as being mostly mango and being slightly tart. 3.2% ABV - not ABW. @ Smith's, Harmon's

Desert Edge's - Belgian Enkel - Enkel, meaning "single" was used by Trappist breweries to label their lower ABV beers. These beers, also known as Patersbier or "father's beer", are Belgian session beers originally brewed for the monks themselves. This is a unfiltered golden ale with fruity banana and pear flavors from the yeast. Light bready malt flavor. Low bitterness and a Dry finish.

2 Row's Feeling Hazy N.E. Style Double IPA -This new beer from 2 Row is a tropical fruit salad. made with Mosaic and El Dorado Hops, it's huge with mango, pineapple grapefruit, tangerine and berry flavors with little bitterness. It's more murky than hazy, but that just adds to the perceived juiciness. It comes in at 9.0% ABV - which can be a problem. since it's hardly detectable. You need this! @ 2 Row, Bayou, Beerhive, Beer Bar, Slackwater

Fisher's Citra Bomb Tom -Missed out on this one yesterday, It's described as being a citra hopped pale ale. If you've had it please share your thoughts.

Tune in for more New Beer Friday as we discuss these and other beer related topics with Mick and Allen this afternoon at 3:30pm on KBER101.

Cheers!

Bohemian's Pro/Am Lagerpalooza IPL

Yesterday, I gave you some info on Lagerpalooza, Utah's preeminent lagered home brew competition. In that story I told you about Bohemian Brewing Company's plan to package and sell last year's winning beer Lagerpalooza entry. Today, I have a preview of this new beer.

This Pro/Am beer was brewed by home brewer, Don Robinson. It's an India Pale Lager that has an American citrus hop profile. The lagering will give the beer a nice clean feel on the tongue. 6.0% ABV - 60 IBUs. This beer will debut at the Lagerpalooza party at noon on Sunday, May 7th. It will be packaged in 12 ounce cans. Can't wait to try your IPL, Don!

Also today, We're down to our final four beer in the Low Point Utah Beer Challenge. Shades of Pale's Grapefruit Revolution goes up against Uinta's Baba Schwatrzbier and Epic's Sour IPA challenges RedRock's IPA Junior. These beers are all quite different, it could be anyone game. Please share the beer bracket love!

Voting ends Saturday morning. The finals will begin Monday morning. Good luck!

Prost!

Lagerpalooza 2017

It's time again for Lagerpalooza Utah's premier home brew competition that focuses on the art of lagering beer. This year, organizers have added a public event to go along with the actual competition. The Bohemian Brewery will be opening up their back lot for a food and drinking area where the public can enjoy not only the regular Bohemian fair, but also try the winning recipe from last years Lagerpalooza winner. This beer will also be canned by Bohemian and sold at the brewery.

Lagerpalooza also coincides with the National Homebrew Day and the Lauterday Brewers Home Brew Club will be there for the Big Brew event. The public can take tours of the Bohemian, but also see how home brewers accomplish the same thing on a much smaller scale.

This will probably be the biggest event in the area to celebrate National Homebrew Day - a real fusion of the amateur and professional brewers coming together to celebrate making beer.
If you have a lagered beer that you'd like to enter, there's still time. You have until April 30th. Here's the info page.

Judging Location and public festival:

Nitro Pumpkin Ale in Cans - Later This Year

Is it too early in the year to be talking about Pumpkin beers? Most definitely. Even though this beer won't be hitting shelves 'till later in the year, it seemed worth mentioning. Wasatch Beers - who is currently transitioning to all cans, will have nitro options of their popular Pumpkin Ale in widgetless cans and nitro taps. Imagine all of the possible black and tan combos that you could come up with.

The votes are in on the tie breaker - Utah Pale Ale moves on. Now we have eight beers left. We have two IPAs, a Pale, a Schwartz, two Pilsners, a Sour IPA and a Red. Voting ends Thursday morning.

Barrel Aged Dubhe is Coming Your Way

If you missed out on drinking any Dubhe on 4/20, this news will make it all better. Uinta Brewing will be producing a special Barrel aged version of the hemp seed infused Imperial Black IPA. This barrels selection will feature Bourbon whiskey, which should make for a tasty brew. Keep checking back for it's release.

It looks like we had a tie in the last round of the Utah Beer Challenge. This has never happened before. It was apparently a pretty tough call for y'all to choose between these two fine ales. So, we're going to do a quick little tie breaker. Over the next 24 hours we will push one of these forward before continuing to the elite eight round. If there's another tie? I will break it.

New Beer and Brewery Friday 4/21/17

I love it when a new brewery hits on Friday. It's like Pie and Beer Day got all freaky with Christmas! So we'll start this special New Beer Friday off with all the new suds the RoHa Brewing Project which will officially open at 11am today.

The RoHa Brewing Project - Back Porch Pale Ale: Clear ruby color. The nose is mostly bready malts, with a bit of pine and citrus peel. The taste starts malty with caramel and butterscotch which quickly slides into an herbal hop bite combined with pine and orange peel. 4.0% ABV @ RoHa

The RoHa Brewing Project - Big Green Couch DIPA: Clear ruby color. The nose has caramel, toffee, grapefruit and light orange. The taste starts with toffee and caramel along with light melon notes. Grapefruit comes next with a bolder and lingering finish of caramel sweetness, some light alcohol, some grapefruit and light citrus flavors, as well as some healthy hop bitterness. Plenty of sweetness up front here as well. 8.0% ABV @ RoHa

The RoHa Brewing Project - Kensington Grand Saison: Clear ruby color. The nose is grainy and fruity with some light yeast phenols and spice. The taste is less grainy than aroma, not much biscuit or wheat, then sweeter esters with some light yeast byproducts. It's sweet, bready and lightly dry. Earthy hops round out the end. Very light dryness on the finish. 6.8% ABV @ RoHa

The RoHa Brewing Project - Three Deep American Ale: Clear ruby color. The nose is light with some biscuit malt and earthy/leafy hops. The taste has light earthy and leafy hops mixed with lightly sweet biscuit malt. Some citrus peel on the back end dries out the finish. 4.0% ABV @ RoHa

The RoHa Brewing Project - Thursday IPA:  Clear ruby color. The nose has slight citrus, pine and is a bit bready. The taste starts with lemon, pine and tangerine. Malt sweetness comes in next with some floral bitterness. Clean finish but the hops still lingers on the palate. 6.5% ABV @ RoHa

Wasatch - Snowbird Session IPA: This being released today at the Utah Brewers Cooperative. It's described as being North East Style Session IPA. 4.0% ABV @ UBC

Squatters - Aussie Hop Pale Ale: Grapefruit in the nose with some caramel. The taste has some berry qualities with vague sweet citrus flavors. Some pithy bitterness in the finish. Nice, super crushable. 4.0% ABV @ Squatters

Boulevard - Changeling: The nose is tart berries and not much else. The taste starts with a big tart punch. Plum and raspberries dark malts dominate. Not terribly complex but very tasty. Mouth feel is a little prickly but it works well. Medium body. Probably a little pricey for what it is. 7.3% ABV

Fisher - The Chocolate Conspiracy Nitro Stout: . Faint milk chocolate and hints of roasted malt in the nose. The taste follows with subtle cocoa and roasted malts. Not super sweet but there is a hint of vague spices in the finish. On the light side. 4.0% ABV @ Fisher Brewing

Another highly drinkable cider from Mountain West. 6.9% ABV @ Mountain West Hard Cider. This goes on sale 3/15/17 at 11am.

HUB's Ferocious Citrus IPA -This must be very good, because it came and went before I had a chance to try it at Beer Bar. I assume more is coming. If you come across any, please let the rest of us know please! 6.2% ABV

Ninkasi's Velocihoptor - The nose has herbal hop, some orange peel and berries. The taste is much the same with caramel, berries, herbal hops, and an earthy finish. There is a high amount of bitterness on the palate as well. It's okay, didn't blow me away. 8.4% ABV @ Beer Bar

Ninkasi's Pacific Rain - The nose has lemon, tangerine and pine. The tastes is full of lemon and tangerine zest and is backed up with a perfect balance of caramel malts. Finishes crisp and refreshing. Highly drinkable. 5.4% ABV @ Beer Bar

Desert Edge's Top Rope Rye - Not tried this one yet. It's described as being a light copper colored ale with low hop flavor and bitterness and a light spicy rye flavor. 4.0% ABV @ Desert Edge

Desert Edge's C.K.Kolsch -  Not tried this one yet. It's described as being a golden German ale with light bready malt and subtle hop flavor. 4.0% ABV @ Desert Edge

Did I miss something? Let me know please.

Round One of the Utah Beer Challenge's Low Point competition is over. There were a couple of very close races, some beer narrowly winning by just one point. The second round begins on Monday. The bracket above has been updated. Check it out. Comments are always welcome.

The RoHa Brewing Project Announces its Opening

(Salt Lake City, Utah) - RoHa Brewing Project’s new Tap Room, located at 30 East Kensington Avenue (1500 South), will open to the public on April 21, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m..
Patrons can expect a full lineup of current RoHa beers:
Back Porch Pale Ale - 4% ABV, a hop-forward, golden-colored ale with just a glint of amber. It is a precise balance of malt and bitter, the hallmark of a great Pale Ale. Your go-to beer for every occasion. Available on tap, in 12 oz cans, and in 22 oz bottles.
Three Deep American Ale - 4% ABV, in honor of RoHa’s three founders, our American Ale has a classic golden wheat color with light but pronounced malt flavors and a slightly hoppy finish. Available on tap and in 12 oz cans.
Thursday India Pale Ale - 6.5% ABV, an homage to our Thirsty Thursday tradition. Our rules required a new beer each Thursday to taste, dissect, and rate. But we hope you’ll enjoy this American IPA over and over. Brilliant gold with a dry, distinctive hop finish. Available in 12 oz cans.
Kensington Grand Saison - 6.8% ABV, this Saison is grand because it packs a bit more punch. Brilliantly red with a host of hops, spice, and malt. Effervescent, tart, and complex. Regal enough for a special occasion, yet versatile enough for a backyard BBQ. Available in 22 oz bottles.
The Big Green Couch Double India Pale Ale - 8% ABV, an IPA with enough malt character to stand up to the high alcohol, bitterness, and hops. Strong but balanced, this IPA is a brewing ode to life’s serendipitous twists. Available in 22 oz bottles.
All beers in our lineup will be available in the package store. RoHa also recently contracted with General Distributing and will begin introducing RoHa beer along the Wasatch Front.
Chris Haas, co-founder and Master Brewer, states “In the midst of an American craft beer revolution, there’s no room for another good beer. But there’s always a place for a great one.”
About RoHa Brewing Project:
At its core, RoHa is great beer done right for the beer drinker who demands that same level from his or her bikes, skis, jobs, and life.

RoHa was 10 years in the making, the dream of Rob (the Ro in RoHa) Phillips. Long before Rob was plotting breweries, Chris Haas was busy creating award-winning beer. Haas (the Ha in RoHa) is a Utah brewing pioneer with two decades in the business. The last piece of the RoHa puzzle Josh Stern, the Driver. Those three personality traits created the ideal triumvirate for an emerging brewery. Yet, it’s the similarities that define RoHa: a clear passion for beer and dedication to the craft balanced with a craving for a great life along with outdoor adventure — powder, single track and rivers.
RoHa Brewing Project looks to inspire and empower beer lovers. Seeking greatness with every beer, brewed with precision and without compromise. To learn more about RoHa Brewing Project, visit www.RoHaBrewing.com
