R.I.P. Private Clubs

Suddenly you were gone. From all the lives you left your mark upon. - Neil Peart

Mikey, the picture you chose to represent this post has me giggling at my desk. Which is kinda sick, because I figure if the picture wasn't cropped, I would probably see the woman's 11 year old son dead and bloodied on the street in front of her, or something like that. But I still can't stop giggling.

Truly a red letter day.

Nice. I wonder how many places decided to keep the membership thing?

Mostley fraternal orginazations like VFW & The ELK's Club. Duffy's Tavern strangely is staying private.

That makes sense. Now, if we can only get rid of the stupid draft (4%) law.

Duffy's is in a somewhat shady area and they value their loyal, regular customer base. They keep out the riff-raff this way, keep their regulars. Or at least, that is the line of reasoning I have heard.

As a semi-regular at Duffy's, I've noticed that they get more then their share of vagrants wandering in at random. Can't really blame the owner for wanting to keep this good excuse to check people at the door.

For what it's worth: My "membership" has expired, probably a couple of years ago. Something tells me they won't give actual customers too hard of a time over it, now that they don't really have to by law.

You know Ed that got me thinking (which is a big deal for me). Do they have to be a private club all the time, or just some of the time?

They shouldn't be able to ping-pong back and forth from private to social at the owners/managers wim.

Not sure about that, Mike. I was assuming that the state is out of the business of regulating bars vs. "private clubs", and any enforcement of membership rules would be just a matter of the individual business' policy.

Could be wrong...
