Talisman and Ogden City Brew Supply Team Up

Talisman Brewing Company and Ogden City Brew Supply, have teamed together for a unique collaboration for beer makers in Utah, making a local craft beer recipe available for homebrewers to try brewing themselves at home.

Homebrewers always like to try and reproduce their favorite commercial beers, and while collaborations between craft breweries and homebrewers are nothing new, this is the first time Utah has seen a Brewery share it's recipe with the intent of others making it.“ said Ross Metzger, Co-Owner of Ogden City Brew Supply. “It's something we have thought of in the past, so when Dusty came in and suggested doing it, it seemed like a no-brainer.”

This kind of partnership isn't altogether unique. Brewcraft, a wholesale homebrew supplier, has been doing something similar with Rogue Brewery in Oregon for several years, but this idea is new to Utah. Dusty Williams, Owner and Head Brewer at Talisman said, “homebrewers are passionate craft beer drinkers as well, and after having customers asking me if they could get my recipe, I thought it made sense to make it available. I was a homebrewer too, and if people are finding inspiration in Talisman beers, then we want to encourage that. Partnering with Ogden City Brew Supply was an easy decision, since we were customers of Salt City Brew Supply before they even opened a location in Ogden.”

We have always believed that a local homebrew shop needs to be involved in its community in order for the community to support it..” According to Co-Owner Cody McKendrick, “Collaboration with Talisman will only help get people more excited about Talisman's beer as well as their own personal brewing process. Growing the overall Craft Beer community in Utah is the goal for both companies and good for the entire community. The craft beer scene in Ogden is growing and we're excited to be a part of that.” Home brewers are now able pick up the Talisman Dagda IPA beer recipe kit from Ogden City Brew Supply to try making on their own brewing equipment at home.
Ogden City Brew Supply has been servicing the Ogden community of homebrewers for two years and has grown their offerings from beer and wine ingredients to include kombucha, mead, hard cider, Kefir, yogurt and cheese cultures. They carry all of the equipment and ingredients needed to make fermented beverages and food at home.

Talisman Brewing Company opened 1.5 years ago and takes pride in community involvement. “We are very stoked to be apart of the craft beer community and culture as well as a collaboration with the good dudes at OCBS.“

Utah has been experiencing rapid growth in the Craft Beer market and now boasts 23 breweries with at least a half dozen or more in the process of opening. Similar to the rest of the country, one of the primary drivers behind the rapid growth in breweries is the growth and increased availability of home brewing supplies and equipment. Passionate home brewers across the country have been taking their hobby to the next level, seeking to share their favorite recipes with drinkers around the globe. Sharing the love of beer is what the homebrewing and craft beer industries are all about.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 8/18/17

Not only is it New Beer Friday, but it's also Utah Beer Fest weekend. There will be a ton of breweries and a shload of beers pouring at the state fairgrounds. Follow the links to get an idea of what to expect. Here's all of the other info you may need. Hope to see you there!

Full Sail Session - Watermelon Wheat: Pretty much as advertised. The nose has watermelon and the taste is subtle watermelon flavor with wheat. You already know if this is your thing or not. Proceed accordingly. 5.4% ABV @ DABC

Anchor - Coffee Porter: This beer is brand new practically everywhere and not many have had it yet, including me. Look for nice coffee notes that don't overwhelm the base porter. 6.7% ABV @ DABC

Kona - Lemongrass Luau: A lot of ginger in the nose with some hops. The taste is big with herbal, ginger, lemon peel, and grass. The lemongrass is most prominent in the end. The ginger is just too strong for me, but I'm not a huge ginger root guy. If your a fan? you'll probably love this light and crisp ale. 5.0% ABV

Ninkasi - Oktoberfest: This seems to be a new incarnation of their Festbier that hit this time last year. This version is heavily bitter for marzen (though they don't cal it that). Picking out the malts is a bit difficult which should be easy because this should be more malt driven. It does indicate that it is dry-hopped. It's not a bad beer but if you're looking for a tradition Oktoberfest Lager this may leave you wanting. 5.9% ABV @ Beer Bar

Wasatch - Nitro Pumpkin: Though it's technically not a new beer, it's nitrogen conditioning takes this beer into other dimensions. The pie spices are prominent and the bitterness is low. It's kinda cool to try this beer side-by-side with it's CO2 brother to see how different the same beer can taste with different gasses.  Which do you like better? 4.0% ABV @ Grocery, C-stores, Bayou

Don't forget to tune in to New Beer Friday on KBER 101 this afternoon at 3:30 as Mick, Allen and myself discuss these beers and other Utah beer related stuff.

The Shot-Ski Record Returns to Park City

In January of 2014 the Town of Breckenridge, Colorado set a world's record for the longest shot-ski at 219 skis and 666 people at 973 feet long. In case you're not sure what a shot-ski is, think of a traditional snow ski that has shot glasses glued to the plank. Now get a bunch of friends, fill the shot glasses with whatever and drink it down at the same time without spilling. That's basically it.

On October, 22nd Park City, Utah broke that record as people celebrated the 30th anniversary of Wasatch Brewery. 1,191 people lined up in the middle of Park City’s Main Street to throw back some of Wasatch’s Premium Ale with a 961-foot-long shot-ski. That record lasted for about three months as Breckenridge took it back in January of this year with 1,234 people drinking from the 1,997-foot shot-ski.

Well, guess what? Park City and the Wasatch Brewery is looking to take it back once again. The one long ski (actually a total of 440 skis bolted together) will be hoisted at 2:00 p.m. on October, 14th in an attempt to re-break the record.

And to keep the celebration going, Wasatch Brewery will host a beer garden in the Brew Pub lot from noon until 6:00, complete with games, live music, a food truck and of course, a selection of Wasatch Brewery’s award-winning craft beers. This year's goal is to sign up a total of 1,250 beer-lovers.

There will be several different ticket options in 2017 including:
$20 ticket, good for one unreserved spot on a ski
$25 ticket, good for one unreserved spot on a ski plus entrance to the beer garden, plus your first beer (capacity limited to 600)
$500 VIP Team Ticket, which includes:
6 reserved spots on two skis
2 skis wrapped with your team or company name to take home as a souvenir
6 entrance passes to the Wasatch Beer Garden
6 beer tokens.

Now that the word has gotten out about what a fun event this is, organizers anticipate that it will sell out very quickly this year, so they are encouraging all potential participants to purchase tickets as soon as possible by going to www.parkcityshotski.eventbrite.com, says Wasatch Marketing Director Judy Cullen. And to inspire everyone to dress up in costume, Wasatch Brewery founder Greg Schirf will be handing out gift cards and Wasatch “swag” to entrants dressed in the best regalia. The goal, like last year, is to have fun while raising money for the Sunrise Rotary of Park City, a very worthwhile cause.

I had a blast participating in the record last year, I'd recommend that you all give it a "shot", see what I did there? Go Park City!

Beer Preview: Moab's FMU Double IPA

I've got another sneak peak of a new beer coming from Moab Brewing Co. This brand new creation is a Double IPA, called FMU. When it hits liquor store shelves in the coming weeks, it will contain four pounds of hops per barrel (31 gallons) and feature Columbus and Simcoe hops at it's base with Centennial and Cascade hops rounding it out later in the boil.

The ABV will be 9.6% and it will be packaged in Moab's standard 16 ounce cans. The release date is probably not too far down the road, as soon as it hits you'll see it here.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 8/11/17

In today's New Beer Friday we have some "out of the box" stuff to help you find your weekend groove.

Avenues Proper's Brett Pale Ale -  The nose has musty leather and funk with some tangerine and lemon notes. No tartness as expected. The flavor is tangerine peel with yeasty bread dough. some leather as well. Not a lot of sweetness, mostly hops and Brett. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, on the lighter and drier side. Mild hoppy bite in the finish. Tasty for sure and easy to drink. Brett pales aren't for everyone, gives this a try and let me know what you think. 4.0% ABV @ Avenues Proper (only)

Proper's Redrum - Red Ale. Not tried this one yet. 4.0% ABV @ Proper

Hopworks Urban Brewery's HUB Cider - Mostly tart apples with some sweet apple juice rounding out the back end. Not quite Jolly Rancher tart, but in that neighborhood. Nice cider. 6.8% ABV @ Beer Bar.

What did I miss? Please let us know.

Cheers!

Snowbird's 45th Annual Oktoberfest Celebration

One of the ten best Oktoberfest celebrations in America is just two days from it's eight week run. Snowbird's Oktoberfest is without a doubt one of the most visually stunning settings you will find and the beer selection is a top notch collection of local and regional brands.

Oktoberfest runs every Saturday and Sunday from Aug. 12 through Oct. 15, 2017, including Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 4. There are a few special events that will be happening during the fest as well, including:
Beard & Moustache Competition: August 12
Military Appreciation Weekends: August 12-13, 19-20
Bratwurst Eating Championship: August 19

Snowbird is encouraging carpooling and parking is $5 cash and no pets are allowed.

One more thing. If you have previously purchased a beer mug at Snowbird you can bring it back with you and have it filled. That way you don't have to buy a new mug every year. It must say Snowbird on it though. Hope to see you there!

Epic Launches a Series of New England-Style IPA

From Epic - It’s true! We have a new series of New England-style IPAs coming your way in August. These juicy, hazy, hop bombs are packed to the brim with flavor. In fact, we’ve been downright irresponsible when it comes to hop utilization. Our brewers have been experimenting with everything from lupulin powder, to massive hop backs, exploring the flavor synergies of fermentation hopping, and literally cramming in more dry hops then our tanks can even hold. Through months of R&D and long nights cleaning out the clogged heat exchanger we’ve developed several different recipes - because our approach to the New England-Style is simple: more is better!

The series will launch in 12oz cans and on draft across our entire distribution footprint. Each release will have its own code name

The first cans will begin packing the middle of August before being rushed to distribution. We are optimizing batch sizes and distributor orders so the beer hits shelves as fresh as possible. Keep your eye peeled these beers may come and go as we brew to meet demand. Follow us on social media for updates and new recipe releases.
and rotate recipes every 2-3 months. See the side of the can for indicators about each new recipe. Our first release goes by Citralush and its over-the-top use of late addition Citra and Mosaic hops gives the beer huge notes of sweet tropical fruit, citrus, and a very subtle touch of Colorado dankness.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 8/4/17

New Beer Friday is chock-full of goodness this week. Now with twice the recommended dose of Conway Twitty!

Snake River's Eclipse Ale: This pale ale is citrusy and floral in the nose. The taste follows with a bit of tangerine and floral bitterness. There is some toasted grain sweetness rounding it out. Overall, it's a tasty pale, not bad for a one and done beer. 5.2% ABV @ Slackwater

Desert Edge's ALTernative Facts Alt: This is a light copper colored German Ale. Malty sweet aroma with a smooth bready malt flavor. Low hop flavor and dry finish 4.0% ABV. @ Desert Edge

Ballast Point's Sea Rose: Hints of pomegranate in the nose. The flavor has a creamy malts with some tart cherry flavor and pomegranate. The flavors as subtle and not in your face. Overall, the flavors are pleasant and it tastes surprisingly fresh. Highly drinkable. 4.0% ABV @ Harmon'sand othe grocery and C-stores.

Talisman Presents - North East Style IPA: Not tried this one yet. Described as juicy and tropical. 7.0% ABV @ Talisman

Melvin's Heyzues: Grassy lemon nose. The taste starts with crackers and dry malts. The bitterness is somewhat herbal with some lemongrass notes. The finish has some pine resins. This is a really great Mexican style lager. @ Slackwater, Bayou

Proper's Lei Effect: This Gose is enhanced with passion fruit. The nose is dry and tart with a slight hint of sulphides. The taste is lemony and slightly briny with tart passion fruit. Some dry cracker notes round out the tartness. 5.0% ABV. Debuts later this afternoon at Proper Brewing.

Mother Earth's Primordial IIPA: Thus has a subdued nose of mostly citrus peel and flowery hops. The taste has pine, citrus and floral notes. The malts are somewhat muted. A bit of alcohol makes it slightly drying in the finish. A nice west coast style IPA, it's just a tad dry. 9.5% ABV @ Slackwater, Bayou, BeerHive

Strap Tank Plans New Brewpub

Is Strap Tank Brewing just a little too far south to make it a regular stop for you? If that's the case I have some news that will make you happy. Earlier this month, the Lehi City Planning Commission approved Strap Tank's concept plan for a new restaurant and microbrewery that is to be located at 3525 N. Outlet Parkway in Lehi's Traverse Mountain area.

The concept plan is said to be very similar to the Springville Strap Tank location, but will be modified to adjust to the sloped geography of Traverse Mountain. Of course some residence made their concerns known to the commission saying, they didn't want the brewpub near schools, parks or neighborhoods. They were assured by Lehi City, that zoning would not be an issue.

Lehi's Planning Commission unanimously approved the concept plan. Strap Tank still needs to return with a finalized site plan.

It would seem that owner, Rick Salisbury has "tapped" into an under served market in Utah County and that the area is due for a craft beer boom. I'll be following Strap Tank's progress in Lehi. Stay close for updates.

Cheers!

Utah's Winners at 39th Annual National Homebrew Competition

David and Scott Anderson of Salt Lake City, Utah were presented a gold medal at the 39th annual American Homebrewers Association (AHA) National Homebrew Competition in the English Pale Ale Category at the Homebrew Con 2017 awards banquet held at The Minneapolis Convention Center.

The 2017 National Homebrew Competition had a total 8,618 entries from 3,530 homebrewers located in all 50 states, Washington D.C. and 13 other countries. “We feel honored to be among some of the great home brewers not only in the United States, but across the globe,” said Scott Anderson. “It is truly amazing that local home brewers in Utah, of all states, took home a gold, silver, and bronze medal.”

The first round took place at 12 regional sites across the country. The top three entries at each site in each of the 33 brew style categories advance to the final round of the competition, held every year at Homebrew Con. This year, the final round of judging took place June 15 at Homebrew Con, where 1,134 entries were evaluated by the judges. “The American Homebrewers Association is thrilled to congratulate David and Scott Anderson on their award,” said Gary Glass, director, American Homebrewers Association. They beat out many outstanding competitors at the National Homebrew Competition—the world’s largest international beer competition—and that’s something to be extremely proud of.”

Big kudos go out to Chris Detrick and Andrew Ayers who also received medals in the competition. Nicely done to you all!

Category 17 Bronze: Double IPA Chris Detrick of Salt Lake City, UT     Lauter Day Brewers

Category 20 Silver: Belgian Ale Andrew Ayers of South Jordan, UT     Lauter Day Brewers

Here's the entire winners list.

New Beer Friday 7/28/17

Not a huge selection of New Beer Friday suds today. However, all three of these beers are damn tasty. You cant go wrong with any of these.

Hoppers - Sendero Obscuro: Pours a clear chestnut-brown color with off-white head, leaving a ring of lacing. The nose has bready malt, fresh bread crust and grass. The taste starts off with roasted grain, cocoa and a bit of brown sugar. A slight nuttiness comes in next with a hint of corn pops as well. The end is floral and grassy, with a nice drying bitterness in the finish. One of the best traditional Mexican lagers made in the state. A must try! 4.0% ABV Look for it at Hoppers.

Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest - Brauhaus Miltenberger Collaboration: Pours a clear -  darkened honey color with a nice pillowy head. The nose has sweet malt some honey and herbal grass. Right off the bat you get a nice dose of caramel malt that is rounded out with a nice dose a vanilla-like flavors. On the back end the hops are assertive and drying with herbal grasses and hint of spices. This is a wonderful marzen that is true to style. Get on this one fast because it will likely never be made again. 6.1% ABV. Look for it at DABC, Beer Bar.

Ballast Point - Unfiltered Sculpin Extra Hopped India Pale Ale: This IPA is hazy with golden orange hues. The head is on the thin side, but it's fine. The nose has citrus peel, peach, mango and lime with some caramel cake. Tropical fruitiness takes the lead in the taste with peach, mango, tangerine and lime. The malt bed ties it all together in the end creating a familiar fruit salad richness. More juicy and fruity than the filtered version. Worth checking out for sure.7.0% ABV Look for it at DABC.

New Beer Friday 7/21/17

Talisman - Season Ale - Raspberry Gose: Lemon mostly dominates with a bit of brine. The raspberry is subtle and has a tough time getting past the tartness. Nice and refreshing. 4.0% ABV. @ Talisman

Talisman - Talisman Presents N.E. IPA: Not tried this one yet. Look for an IPA with low bitterness and high amounts of citrus and tropical fruit notes. 7% ABV. @ Talisman

Full Sail - Cherry Black:  The nose has cherry, backed by faint notes of cocoa. The taste follows with  black cherry, then a healthy dose of cocoa. Some grassy bitterness in the finish help to balance it out. 5.4% ABV. @ DABC

Proper - Guava Skittlebrau: The Guava really shines on this latest incarnation of Skittlebrau. The malts are slightly toasty and there's a slight tartness in the finish. Very nice. 4.0% ABV. @ Proper

Proper - Delightsome White IPA: Love the name of this WIPA. Doughy coriander with spicy citrus peel. A nice change of pace. 4.0% ABV. @ Proper

Epic Coffee Cream Ale: The nose has toasted grain and coffee - slightly nutty too. The taste is mostly cereal driven with subtle coffee flavors. It works pretty well, the coffee here is more of accent rather than the primary driver. Nice beer. 5.6% ABV @ Epic

Payette - Aura Guava and Hibiscus:  Lots of tart cranberry and unripened guava. I'm not big on hibiscus, luckily it's nicely restrained. Well rounded and tasty. 4.0% ABV. @ Harmons

Coming From Epic This Fall

Believe it or not you are going to start seeing the Autumn beers very soon. I'm talking about your Oktoberfests (marzens), Pumpkins and Harvest Beers. Epic Brewing Co. has done some tweaking of some of their beers inside and outside of the bottle. Epic's Fermentation Without Representation is now called Imperial Pumpkin Porter (it's no longer a collaboration beer with DC Brau). There will be some minor tweaks, other than that it will still be the same rich beer.

Epic is also going to take that Imperial Pumpkin Porter and age it in bourbon barrels. Bourbon and pumpkin spices make a fantastic tasting combo. I cant wait to see what comes of Bourbon Barrel Imperial Pumpkin Porter. There is no release date yet for these, I imagine that the Imperial Pumpkin will debut first. If you behave yourselves, I promise to fill you in as to when.

Cheers!

Coming Soon: Grapefruit Hop Nosh

If you are a fan of Uinta's Tangerine Hop Nosh, I have a preview of something that may make your mouth water as well. This morning I came across the labels for Grapefruit Hop Nosh IPA, the newest in Uinta's fruit enhanced IPA series.

Like the Tangerine version, this IPA will contain fruit puree that will give the beer it's citrusy punch. it will dial in at 7.3% ABV and will be available in 12 oz bottle and cans. Stay close for it's release.

New Local, Liquid Happiness Coming Soon

Rejoice! More new beers are coming your way and I'm happy to be able to give you a preview of the liquid happiness that will be making it's way to your fridges soon.

First up we have Udder Chaos from Talisman Brewing. Besides having a great name, this milk stout will be full of chocolatey goodness and lactose sweetness. It will dial in at 4% and I hope that means it will be popping up at my local grocery store sooner rather than later.

Next up we have another dark beer that should be showing up sometime this week. Sweet Dreams from Shades of Pale is an Imperial Porter that will come in at a hefty 9.5%. This beer is big on roast, char and malt sweetness. As soon as SOP slaps those labels on it'll be good to go. Give 'em a few days.

The next beer up isn't really new, but it's a new look for a beer that will soon be a major part of our late summer/autumn drinking.
Bohemian's Oktoberfest is one of the more widely available locally made marzens and this one usually pops up near the end of August. Look for it in 12 ounce cans. This beer has a clear amber-orange color with a good two fingers of white head. The nose is mostly malt driven with caramel and citrus highlights. The flavor has a mild maltiness with a bit of vanilla and a slight bitterness. Average carbonation with a medium/light body. 4.0%.

Stay close for the release dates on these and other new beers.

Prost!

The 4th Annual Pie & Beer Day

What makes a Holiday? I have no clue. Annually we as a culture celebrate some seriously weird shit. Pioneer Day is not "weird shit". It's a day that celebrates a people's long journey to their new home. It's pretty great thing. Sadly though it's evolved into a thinly veiled religious holiday for a select segment of our population. I think that's why the Pie and Beer Day phenomena has been gaining ground so quickly. It is literally "Festivus for the Rest of us". If you don't subscribe to an established way of celebrating, all you need is a clever play on words and a theme to rally behind. Not to mention that sometimes you just need an excuse to get a few like minded people together to celebrate a thing in a way that seems appropriate to you.

There will be a few ways to celebrate Pie and Beer Day on (or around) the 24th of July. Today we're talking about the largest celebration that happens annually at Salt Lake City's Beer Bar. Hosted by Bad Brad Wheeler, City Weekly and the Beer Bar - this party brings together Utah's craft breweries and some of the state's finest restaurants, bakeries and clubs to pair sweet and savory pies with fine local beers. The only floats you'll see here are stout beer floats.

Pie and Beer Day at Beer Bar will be a fundraiser for the
Utah Brewer's Guild. Your "Pie Pass" will get you Five pie and beer pairings [more can be purchased]. Tickets for this 21+ event will be available at the door. Date: July 24th, 3pm to 7pm at 161 East 200 South, Salt Lake City.

Stein Eriken's Hops on the Hill

Deer Valley's Hops on the Hill, has been one of those 'best kept secrets' among Park City locals for the past few years now. It's one of those great weekly events that pair local craft beers and with Chef Zane's (of Stein Erikson Lodge) best bites on the deck as live music plays nearby on the lawn.

The beer, the food, the music changes every week, making each Tuesday evening unique. Here's you're schedule, along with participating breweries bands. The menus are fluid and will be revealed closer to the events.

Details:
$20 Food and $20 Beer Tasting | 6pm - 7:30pm on the Deck
Free Concert | 6pm - 9pm on the Lawn
Outdoor a la Carte Grill | 6 pm on the Lawn

7700 Stein Way, Park City, Utah 84060
Reservations recommended. (435) 645-6455

New Beer Friday 7/07/2017

When the heat hits hard, people chase the beers that are on the light and crushable side of the spectrum. Thankfully, that's exactly what we have in this week's New Beer Friday - a hand full of quenchers that have arrived just in the nick of time.

Desert Edge Vienna Lager - This is a light copper colored German lager with a rich, smooth malt character. The flavor is full of bready malt with a very light, floral hop character in the end. Medium body with a dry finish. 4.0% ABV

Fisher Blondowski - This somewhat malty brew has some subdued fruitiness from the grains along with herbal and grassy bitterness. The body is light. If you're into Kolsch Biers you dig this. 4.0% ABV

Fisher Strawhoppa - This is a clean wheat ale. You'll get mostly toasted crackers and floral hops. The yeast here is mostly neutral, so the typical esters are barely present. 4.0% ABV

Red Rock West Coast Pale Ale - This American pale ale has notes of brown sugar, bready malts, lemony-pine notes and a touch of grapefruit. It's on the light side of medium-bodied, with moderate CO2. Fairly refreshing, with a reasonably hoppy kick. 4.0% ABV

Red Rock Lime Gose - The lime flavors here play well with the tart lemony base, creating a pleasant citrus smack. Some dough and sodium lingers in the back. Quite nice. 4.0% ABV

Coming Soon From Epic

I managed to get my hands on some of the new things that Epic Brewing Co will be selling in Salt Lake City in the near future. The first one is long overdue in my opinion, I can't believe this beer hasn't got the barrel treatment before. Epic's Whiskey Barrel Barley Wine takes their American Style Barley Wine and gives it a sabbatical in (as of yet) undisclosed whiskey barrels. No word yet on when this beer will be finished.

The other beer isn't really new to Epic but it is new to SLC. Originally created under the name Kaffeina, this beer was brewed in collaboration with Denver, Colorado's Crafty Ladies Beer Club. Coffee Cream Ale (as it will be called in Utah), is described as having a huge and unexpected roasted coffee aroma. The fruity ale esters blend perfectly with the lightness of the roasted coffee and suggest orange blossoms and pomegranate with butterscotch sweetness from the malt. The finish is mildly tannic and returns to the roasted quality of the aroma.

Both should be a welcome addition to their SLC Lineup.  Hang in there, release dates will be coming soon.

Cheers!
