Uinta Expands & Cans

Last Friday Uinta Brewing announced that they were in the midst of a huge expansion project that will not only bring more space for the brewery, but more jobs and a canning line.

Uinta has developed plans for a second plant, a 34,000 sq. ft. building, which is slated to break ground in July, 2012.  The new facility will house Uinta’s packaging equipment, cold storage, a second lab, employee tasting room, and additional office space.  All told, Uinta Brewing Company will operate on a more than 5-acre brewing campus. The project is expected to be completed in early 2013.
For this brewery, the new facility isn’t the only thing on the rise.  Aware of the sluggish economy, and eager to help local business, Uinta is thrilled to be adding a host of new team members.  The brewery’s growth is directly responsible for a 40% increase in jobs.

Uinta recently acquired the land immediately south of the existing brewery. Following the recent demolition of the preexisting structure, from which 100% of the materials were recycled.

With the new facility, Uinta will be installing a canning line, adding a new option to their current packaging lineup. The Uinta team, comprised of outdoor enthusiasts, is excited to offer a package that pairs well with adventure. Uinta has not finalized which brands will be dressed in the new aluminum package, and the team welcomes your input via a Facebook poll. Visit Uinta’s Facebook page ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Uinta-Brewing/136640885735?ref=ts ) to let them know which brands you would like to see (drink) canned.

I think cans are the direction things are headed. I'm glad more breweries are figuring this out.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 6/22/12

We have only one new beer today, it's Widmer's Drifter APA. The nose is piney and citrusy, typical for an American Pale Ale. The are a lot of pineapple and grapefruit notes up front with caramel maltiness playing a equally balanced role. Bready notes and a mild earthy hoppiness round out the end. Clean finsh, not much lingering flavors, a very solid balance between hops/malt.

Very impressed with the pale ale... a perfect balance, did I mention that? I really like this one. @ The Beerhive for now, look for it at liquor stores soon.

Cheers!

The Spice Must Flow!

As we briefly mentioned yesterday, the Utah Legislature had gathered in a special session to do what they should have done last February, free up more liquor licenses for business that desperately need them. The bill passed.

That doesn't mean Utah is embracing economic development via liquor. Money from licensing fees will go toward more DUI blitzes and liquor enforcement, which is fine, but it's an added cost to a problem that exists within the uneducated walls of ward houses and not in reality.

The usual argument by legislators is that more liquor licenses will lead to more underage drinking and drunken driving. This is just legislators parroting the majority line, regardless of the reality; and that is, poorly written and implemented laws stifled development in the state.

It's this kind of cultural bigotry that turns otherwise intelligent conservatives into some kind of neo-Carrie Nation progressives when liquor issues come up.

So I guess state legislators are in a bit of a pickle. Stifle what their brains tell them and help prosper Utah's economic growth. Or go with their hearts and keep Utah in the 1950's forever. My guess is they'll combine both and make a mess of brilliant economic opportunities. Who needs a beer?!

Cheers!

You're Going to be Paying More for Your Beer

On April 10, 2012, The UDABC commission voted to approve a measure that more than doubles the “handling fee” from $0.42 to $0.90 per case on everything delivered by the state’s warehouse.

This means all breweries that make higher alcohol beer will likely be raising their prices effective July 1, 2012. According to the DABC, a “handling fee” is a nominal fee charged on everything it processes.

The increase will likely affect the prices at the individual brewery's cold cases, the DABC state liquor stores and the price that licensees pay for the beer.

Just so you know, if you notice a price increase it's on the state level and not on the part of the breweries.

On a lighter note, Utah's "liquor gestapo" unofficially headed by General...er...Senator John Valentine of Orem, is bending to pressure from businesses to free up more liquor licenses for restaurants. More on this after it officially passes.

Barley's Angels July Gathering

Last April we were happy to inform you that Barley's Angels a national organization comprised of female lovers of craft beer was starting a Utah chapter. Their first meeting was a huge success. Organizer, Alexandra Ortiz Fargher, said she was expecting 10-15 people and over 30 showed up.

If you are interested but were unable to attend, your second chance is close at hand. Their next quarterly educational social will be Thursday June 28th at the Kimball Arts Center in Park City. Jaime Burnham, manager of the Beer Nut, and Grand Poobah of the "Hop Bombshells" women's home brewing club, will be the featured speaker. Jamie will share her vast insights on home brewing and beer in general.

All women in the beer community, their friends and family are welcome, but please RSVP to alex@shadesofpale.com so that you can be added to the invite list. There is no event fee. Unlike the last social, there is no organized dinner after the event but a few "angels" will be heading out to dinner after, and all are welcome to join.

Ladies, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted with craft beer from women who have great knowledge and insight. Plus you don't have us extra chromosome "tripods" mucking things up. That right there is worth the trip.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 6/15/12

New Beer Friday is located at Hoppers today. Brewmaster and Secret Agent, Donovan Steele has concocted two unique beers, that dad will surely appreciate.

Grodziskie (or Gratzer). Is a traditional, East Prussian/Polish, oak smoked wheat ale. It has a bright straw color with white head, bitterness comes through well with a good amount of noble hop flavor over a sharp bright smoke flavor and aroma. The extremely high amounts of smoked wheat malt gives it a tart almost sour taste. For a smoke beer I'm finding it a very drinkable unique session ale.

Chocolate Kiss: A chocolate Porter dry nibbed with Ghana cacoa with some.cinnamon and a touch of vanilla. Finished with a little bit of Mexican Chocolate.

If you attended the Mountain Brewers Festival earlier this month, you may have got a sneak peak. Only at Hoppers Brewpub in Midvale.

Cheers!

The Garage Bar Fire

I don't know if any of you SL locals saw this, but a fire in a salvage yard field adjacent to the Garage Bar caused some exterior damage to the rear, patio and office areas of the bar on Beck Street early Saturday morning. The bar’s owners expected to be closed for at least two weeks.

Looking at the photo above it's hard to believe the whole building didn't go up in flames. Glad to hear no one was hurt and the damage wasn't too bad. Good Luck on repairs!

New Beer Friday!!! 6/8/12

It's a "big ass" New Beer Friday! We haven't had one of the these in a while, so strap in, it may get bumpy.

Sierra Nevada's Hoptimum: Mikey wait long time for this one! Sweet caramel tones quickly give way to BIG aromas of floral, piney, and citrusy hops, hints of resin, orange, grapefruit, lemon and grass make for a BIG nose. The BIG hoppy flavors of citrus, pine, and grass all carry over onto the pallet before blending very well with a sweet caramel malty backbone, hints of alcohol linger in the finish. Hopitumum is well balanced for a staggering 100 IBU brew, and features a medium-full body and moderate levels of carbonation. BIG, BOLD, DELICIOUS! @Beerhive & Liquor stores in the coming weeks

Lagunitas Imperial Red Ale:  The nose is a tropical fruit hop bomb with rich, malts beneath. The taste is aggressively tropical-hoppy at first, but has a sweeter, maltier finish than an IPA would have. The mouthfeel is fairly heavy and well-carbonated. Overall, this is a solid hoppy red. Very, very tasty! @Beerhive

Widmer Hefeweizen: Yeasty aroma of wheat, floral notes, dough, and lemon cookies. Tastes of lemon cookies, wheat, floral notes, dough, yeasty, citrus juice and a bitter, dry finish with a yeasty coating comes through. Medium body, creamy with light carbonation. A wonderful Hefe. @Beerhive & Liquor stores in the coming weeks

Widmer Drop Top Amber: A bit of bready malt in the nose, with some vaguely tart fruity character, accompanied by a balanced, freshly herbal hop presence. The taste has a somewhat biscuity flavor up front with some caramel sweetness. Surprisingly tart in the end, although not over the top. Hop bitterness is middle-of-the-road, with a balanced fruity and herbal flavor. Not bad. @Beerhive & Liquor stores in the coming weeks

Widmer Rotator IPA (Shaddock):  Made with grapefruit peel, it has light grapefruit in the nose with a sweet grainy malt is present. Seems rather spicy and earthy as well. The hop bitterness balances well with the lightly sweet caramel and biscuity malt. Pine, grass, and earthy hops are up front, and yet finish with a nice citrus and spicy punch. A very tasty offering. @Beerhive & Liquor stores in the coming weeks

Kona Longboard: The nose is very clean with slight notes of grain and grass. The tastes follows suit with notes of bread and grain, light herbs and a little bite of hops to even things out. Mouthfeel is pretty good and refreshing. A very nice light-bodied lager. @Beerhive & Liquor stores in the coming weeks

Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale: The nose is of bread/biscuit-like malt and some subdued hop aromas. Taste is of citrus zest and floral hops up front with a solid malt backbone. Mild bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and clean mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good pale ale with a nice balance between the malt and hops in the taste. @Beerhive & Liquor stores in the coming weeks

RedHook ESB: You may have had this in the past and thought, "this ain't so great". It's worth revisiting, a lot of the previous flaws have been fixed. The nose has faint aromas of floral/fruity hops with a little bit of toasty malts in the background. Pretty nice balance, but just not enough of either one really jump out. Caramel malts are frontrunners on the flavor. This finishes with a pretty decent bitter hop flavor. Again, this one is pretty balanced. The feel is light with good lively carbonation. Overall not bad. @Beerhive & Liquor stores in the coming weeks

Long Hammer IPA: The nose is hoppy, floral with some grassiness and lemon notes. The taste definitely has the hops come out strong. The mouthfeel is well carbonated and medium bodied and finishes with some of the grassiness and hops. Overall, not a bad IPA, and for an IPA, I would have this again. @Beerhive & Liquor stores in the coming weeks

Full Sail Phil's Existential Alt: Malty nose with some caramel notes; it's heavier on the biscuit/bread than on the caramel/sweet side. There is also a dash of earthy/noble hop character. The taste is a creamy concoction of bread and caramel, with a little bit of biscuit at the end and a balanced bitterness. More tilted to the caramel side than the aroma, I rather like the flavor. Mouthfeel is medium with a good, creamy carbonation. I like it. @ Liquor stores now

Angry Orchard Apple Ginger: I judged this at the Mountain Brewers Festival. We gave it a gold medal. Good ginger notes that don't overpower the base cider. Quite tasty and different. @ Liquor stores now

Angry Orchard Crisp Cider: We gave this one the Silver Medal. The names says it all. Crisp and dry apples. Very tasty. @ Liquor stores now

Go get 'em!

Cheers!

Squatters' Bumper Crop

To help celebrate 20 years of the Downtown SLC Farmer's Market Squatters is debuting a new beer. Called Bumper Crop; the new ale is inspired by the season and the spirit of the Farmer's Market, which is affordable - fresh local products.

Bumper Crop is a Honey Ale, made with fresh Lavender. I've never had a beer that has lavender as a main component, should be interesting.

Reminder: Beerfest This Saturday!

Remember the 18th Annual Mountain Brewers Festival is this Saturday (June, 2). I was given an update on the number of breweries participating this year event.... it's huge!!!

There will be 82 breweries participating and that doesn't include contributions from Idaho Falls' local distributors!
There could be upwards of 90 breweries represented. Look for beers from breweries such as Stone, 21st Amendment and Elysian. Plus a shload of  regional favorites.

The weather is looking to be perfect and I believe Utah's allotment of tickets are close to being sold out. Check with Uinta, Bohemian & Roosters to see if they still have any; if not? they can be purchased at the gate; the day of the fest. Who's going?

Cheers!

Thirst Fursday Historic Pub Crawls

Believe it or not, Utah has a long history with beer. That history may have been stunted by prohibition and post prohibition self righteousness, but the fact remains; beer has always been here.

If your a history buff or just enjoy a little beer with your history, the Utah Heritage Foundation is offering  "Thirst Fursday Historic Pub Crawls" this summer.

On the first Thursday of every month, participants will learn the history of beer in Utah by taking tours of three well-known watering holes. It's a "pub crawl" of sorts. The next "Thirst Fursday" is on June 7, the following dates are July 5 and Aug. 2.

The Pub crawls begin at 5 p.m. and the cost is $15 for foundation members or $20 for the public. A special T-shirt is included. the locations will be provided when you register at www.utahheritagefoundation.org/.
The Pub Crawl tour also is available to private groups with advance notice, payment, and a minimum of 10 people.

Cheers!

More Liquor Licences May Free up

Well it looks like pressure from local businesses may be starting to have an effect on the amount of liquor licenses available to local entrepreneurs. In typical fashion; your evil stepmother, Sen John Valentine has been working behind closed doors to secretly craft a plan that will free up an unknown amount of liquor permits  for restaurants.

The news came yesterday in a comment from Utah Liquor Control Commission Chairman Richard Sperry. Sperry told dozens of applicants who applied for permits, but went away empty handed — because the state has run out of club and restaurant liquor licenses.

Sperry said when he had a conversation with Sen. John Valentine, who had "sworn him to secrecy" in the matter.

While this is good news, you will have to pay for it in some other way at another time. likely next in the next legislative session.

New-ish Beer Friday

Hop Syndrome is not a new beer, but Epic's latest version has a new quality that makes it unique from it's predecessor versions. Aramis.

Aramis a new hop variety from the Alsace region of  France that has been rarely used in the states. Epic used five pounds per 10 barrel batch of whole leaf Aramis in the hopback to impart an earthy, light lemon aroma to the bright tropical flavors of the calypso hops to make Hop Syndrome an even better summer lager.

Available now at the brewery and where Epic's Exponential series is sold.

Cheers!

Let the Bidding Begin!

Well it looks like Utah's "liquor lord", Sen. John Valentine's Paulianna dream world may soon stifle Utah's economy.

In a legislative interim meeting yesterday commercial developers testified that the state’s acute license shortage will cause existing permits to be priced artificially high — pushing small business and entrepreneurs out of the mix. It’s simple economics, when there is no supply [of licenses] but a great demand, costs will increase significantly.

Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem, who sponsored SB314, which allowed licenses to be sold on the open market, said the intent was to make it easy for restaurants to sell all assets when they closed. He acknowledged the need for him to bring back proposals to the committee to free up more licenses. But administrative rules or proposed legislation could take months to enact.

A year ago, commissioners at the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control were so opposed to permit holders selling licenses that they took the unprecedented — but unsuccessful — step of asking Gov. Gary Herbert to veto SB314. The bill also freed up a few restaurants licenses, but it didn’t take long for the supply to run dry. This month, 45 applicants have filed for a variety of liquor permits — but only one, a full-service license allowing all types of alcohol — is available.

If this situation becomes reality getting a liquor license of any kind would be like winning the lottery since they can turn around and sell it for a huge profit. All applicant will likely acquire a license just to profit from it's resale.

SLUG's 5th Annual Beer Issue

I'm sure most of you have check this out by now, but if you haven't SLUG Magazines Beer Issue is out. The issue is full of stories related to Utah's craft beer scene, but most importantly it has the best pictorial layout of the boys that make our suds.

SLUG needs to make a calendar of this "masculine mess" before I do! Imagine; ringing-in the holidays to a 16x9 of Squatters brewer, Jason Stock sitting on the shitter - slamm'n IPAs and the like. Now that's cheesecake!

New Beer Friday (Wookey Jack)!!!

Yup! That my boy up there. People often confuse us for brothers. I personally don't see it. I'm much hairier.  When I heard Firestone Walker was naming a beer after my Kashyyyk, kinfolk. I called my favorite bandoleer wear'n space mammoth... And as you can see; he got a little excited. As did I!

Wookey Jack pours black with a fluffy but sturdy beige head. The nose is full of Citrus and Amarillo with hints of rye malt beneath. The Taste starts with big citrus and pine. Thick "chewie" caramel and toffee malts are next. Spicy rye punches the tongue and rounds out the hops. Hints of pumpernickel, cocoa and Wookey pelt round out the end. Finishes slightly dry and peppery.

This beer is very well balanced. Masterfully made. A limited edition treat you absolutely must try. It's a great time to be a rye beer lover!

8.3% ABV. Available now at the Beerhive, Bayou and possibly State Liquor stores in the coming weeks.

Cheers!

It is very likely that Hoppers Brewmaster and Secret Agent, Donovan Steele will not get any of these, Star Wars references (sad, I know). Tiffany, please help the poor lad out.

Congrats to Moab and we'll see you Tuesday at Desert Edge.

Utah's 2012 World Beer Cup Winners

Brewers from around the world received awards from an elite international panel of judges in the 2012 Brewers Association World Beer Cup. A 17.7 percent increase over 2010, the entries were eligible for gold, silver and bronze awards in their respective categories. Judges presented a total of 284 awards.

Normally, Utah's brewers do pretty well at the bi-annual competition. This year, the only medals were awarded to Squatters and the Utah Brewers Cooperative. Here are the winning local beers with the complete winners list a well. Congrats!

New Beer Friday 5/4/12

When RedRock's Secale came out last year, it really altered my perception of rye beers. I've always liked them, but the combination of rye beer and rye whiskey really brought the style to the next level.

While Secale is on hiatus (aging in barrels), there's a new offering at the Bayou that will tide you over 'till it returns.

Part of the Smokestack Series, Boulevard's Rye-on-Rye takes advantage of the assertive spiciness of rye to provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang.

It just came in last night, I haven't had the pleasure yet, but guaranteed I'll be sampling and comparing this evening.  750ml. 11% ABV.

Cheers!

(note: that is not Mark Alston from the Bayou pictured above. It is in fact master illusionist and warlock, Doug Henning. I can understand the confusion.)

Brainless Corruption

Yup, it's just like it sounds. Epic has taken a classic Belgian style golden ale and corrupted it with a little American-style-bending-flair to produce something akin to a Belgo-IPA.

Corruption is Epic's second collaboration beer with DC Brau (the first was Fermentation w/o Representation).  Epic brewed a batch of Brainless Belgian Golden Ale and let DC Brau corrupt it with four types of hops. Chinook and CTZ in the boil with more CTZ for aroma. Whole leaf Centennial in the hopback and Citra in the dry hop. The result is a spicy/tropical IPA.

Pours a murky orange color with two thick fingers of white head. The nose is of citrus hops, mango, tropical fruit, pine hops, and fruity malts. The taste starts with piney and citrus hops. Estery yeast, mango notes and fruity malts come next with, pineapple, peach and orange peel rounding out the end. It finishes bitter and reasonably dry. 6.2% abv

DC Brau and Epic, have both been honored with invitations to SAVOR, will be serving this beer in Washington DC as a celebratory beverage during the craft beer and food event in June.

Brainless Corruption is bottled in the standard Brainless Belgian bomber. The only indicator that beer is the "corruption" version is the print on the date/batch area of the bottle.

This beer is an EXTREMELY LIMITED release, so only 2 bottles per customer. Only available at the brewery!

Cheers!

The Hop 'n Keg Brewery: Update

Just thought I'd share this photo with y'all. It's a shot of new "stainless" be delivered to the Hop 'n Keg Brewery located in the Quarry Steakhouse in Vernal, Utah. Looks like Utah's seventeenth brewery will soon be a reality.

These boys are definitely serious about getting this brewery up and running! If all goes as planned, Vernal residents and vacationers should be sucking down locally made suds in a few months. Congrats!

Cheers!

Vino Volo Ale House: Salt Lake City

If I was to choose one thing that really make me proud to be part of Utah's beer culture; it's the sense of community the breweries share with one and other. This sense of community has been made a reality for consumers as Squatters opens it's newest venture, the Vino Volo Ale House.

Vino Volo has been around for quite a few years in a dozen states, but they've primarily specialized in wine with a few beer options. This new concept in Salt Lake City's International Airport brings Utah's craft beers into the forefront and features beers from Squatters, Wasatch, Uinta, Hoppers, Moab, Bohemian, RedRock, Desert Edge and Roosters.

Located at Terminal 2 on Concourse D; the new space at the airport is a combination of a cozy adult lounge, restaurant, and boutique beer/wine shop that offers themed tasting flights of two or three glasses. Sadly, no bottles can be purchased to take with you.

If your on your way out of town or are visiting it's a great one stop shop to get a good feel of what Utah's Craft brewers have to offer.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 4/27/12

Just one new beer today. Thanks to Douglas for spotting this one.

MacTarnahan's Spine Tingler pours a nice golden color with a touch of haze and a finger of compact white foam. The nose has a nice malt aroma with pear, Granny Smith apples, a light cherry character. Floral hops are present as well. The taste starts with a big maltiness and apples, though it is not as sweet as in the nose. Midway though, the spicy yeast phenols add a sharp twist. Candi sugar and big phenols round out the end.

Overall it's an Okay beer. I'm not really geeked about the whole package. It's a bit too phenolic; the alcohol is not particularly well hidden and the sweetness didn't meld well with the rest of the flavors. Available at select liquor stores. Cheers!

Hoppers' Midnight Beer

Let's face it, Mexican beers don't get a lot of respect in the craft brew community. They are without a doubt one of the lesser appreciated North American made beers. In many cases I get it, the corny/grassy profile can get a little old and their reputation as a "kiddie party beer" can drive the serious beer officianto away.

Secret agent and Hoppers Brewmaster Donovan Steele would like to change that with his new Mexican Lager Cervesa de Media Noche (Midnight Beer).

Midnight Beer is a "dark" Latin American lager made with a Vienna and Pilsener base malts, a small amount of Chilean chocolate malt, Chilean dark caramel malt and some flaked corn for a hint of flavor typical of the style. The nose is full of Styrian Golding hops that impart a spicy sweet hop flavor and aroma. Nice drinkability yet slight malt leaning complexity, medium body, dry finish, full flavor, highly drinkable, refreshing, and pairs well with spicy or grilled foods. A perfect beer for our early summer temperatures. On tap now at Hoppers in Midvale, this one won't last long.

Salud!

Vote for Phil!

One of our own needs your help! Phil Baldwin of SLC has made it to the finals in the Samuel Adams "Come Brew with Us" contest. Baldwin needs his fellow Utahns to vote for his video posted on the Samuel Adams Facebook contest page.

For the contest, Samuel Adams executives asked beer fans to submit either a video or essay that demonstrated their creativity and knowledge of their beer. Five finalist were picked in five regions. Baldwin’s 90-second video was the only video submitted by Western region contenders. It follows a bottle of beer winning a poker game and playing golf. One winner from each region will receive a trip to Boston to tour the famous brewery and meet Jim Koch, president, CEO and fifth-generation brewer. Beside Baldwin, other Western region finalists come from Idaho Falls, Idaho; Portland, Ore.; Yakima Wash.; and Sparks, Nev.

Do it now! The deadline is Monday, April 30. Good luck, Phil!

Cheers!

Barley's Angel's: Utah Chapter

Utah's craft brew community has come a long way in a short time and Utah's women have been a big part of it. There are plenty of homebrew clubs around but no clubs designed especially for women. That is about to change.

Alexandra Ortiz Fargher, co-owner of Shades of Pale Brewing Co. has started up a Utah Chapter of Barley's Angels, a group committed to involving women in the enjoyment of craft beer by creating environments where women can learn more about beer in a friendly, educational and supportive atmosphere, thus creating more women beer enthusiasts, and, ultimately, involving more women in beer- and brewery-related careers.

The Park City chapter will meet quarterly, with the first meeting being held on Thursday, April 26, 2012. The meeting will start with a brief brewery tour then adjourn to Good Karma for a beer tasting and just taking time to get to meet other women, network, chat and enjoy each other's company.

All are welcome, whether you are a beer lover or just tasting your first glass! If you would like to be apart of Barley's Angels but cannot attend this event email alex@shadesofpale.com and she will keep you up-to-date on meetings/events!

Thank you, Alex for putting this together!

Cheers!

The 2012 Utah Beer Festival

If the Mountain Brewers festival is too far of a drive for you or it doesn't quite satisfy your beerfest quota, the 2012 Utah Beer Festival should put you in your happy place.

In previous years the Utah Beer Festival has been held at Washington Square in downtown SLC. This year it's moving back to the newly remodeled Gallivan Center where most of our local beerfests have been held. This year the beerfest will be held on August 26.

This beerfest has sparked a lot of debate in the beer community. Many have called it unorganized and poorly planned. I personally don't think this is the case. Yes, the crowds are massive an the lines are brutally long, but in my opinion the festival as it is now is to small for the size of the Wasatch Front & Back. Here's my reasoning.

Too few breweries participate: Utah breweries are great, but the number of participating breweries can't possibly meet the publics demand unless each brewery triples or Quadruples their ability to serve.

Bring in out of state breweries: This would be nice and many out of state breweries would love to participate, but none are willing to endure the cost of bringing in thousands and thousands of bottles, when kegs are their preferred option. which they're not allowed to do by Utah Law.

Real estate: Washington Square was a full city block and it was never utilized. The Gallivan Center is much smaller and all of it will be utilized. This may cause more crowding and line problems if the numbers of tickets aren't greatly reduced.

The Number of Days: This in my opinion is the real key to making this a success. A two or three day festival would greatly reduces the burden on all parties involved. Brewers wouldn't need to increase their resources, crowd size could be limited and organizers could still make their bottom lines. Most everyone would be happy.

I've always had a great time at the UBF. I'd love to see it become life long tradition. What are your thought, anything I missed?

Cheers!

Sorry, Everyone

I'm sad to say, that after 34 days I'm pulling the plug on the 2012 Utah Beer Challenge. I apologize to RedRock, Desert Edge and their crews for cancelling the challenge at the eleventh hour, but knowing these guys as well I as I do, neither camp would want to be associated with a tainted win.

Personally, this really blows. It's not like this is the equivalent of digging ditches, but it did eat up a lot of personal time and limited brain cells. As for the guy who screwed it up for everyone, thanks for the turd in the punchbowl.

Since I spent precious pillow time making awards, here are the winners certificates. Two great beer that deserved better. Please enjoy a UPA or an Elephino soon. They deserved to be here.

The Cheaters Have Taken Over

I give up. I've just identified someone cheating on the Challenge. Within forty minutes a Linux operator from SLC using a Safari browser has completely fucked up the voting. Yes, I know who you are. I'll leave it to you. Should I kill this thing now? It's obvious I'm not capable of providing fair forum for this kind of fun to take place. It's your call.

The 2012 Mountain Brewers Festival

I was going to spend this time talking to you about the 2012 Mountain Brewers Festival, then I realized that there's really no need. If you've attended the annual event you know what it's all about and you've likely already made your plans and have made your reservation at the place that will shelter your hangover.

If for some strange reason you've missed one of my million posts on MBF, let me just say these four things. Approx 35 breweries, 140 different beers, less than 3 hours away & most importantly, no Utah bullshit! Yup, that right all that shit that pisses you off here, ain't happening in Idaho Falls. That right there is worth the price of admission.

Speaking of admission, tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the gate. Tickets will be available for purchase after April 20 at Bohemian Brewery, Rooster's Brewing & Uinta Brewing. This will get you access to unlimited 4 oz. pours from at least 35 breweries.

This is mostly a festival for western breweries, but look for offering from as far away as the eastern U.S., Germany and Belgium.

So save the date. June 2, 2012. Hope to see you there!

Cheers!

Finally the Finals!

In corner number one we have one of the "newer" kids on the block, RedRock's Elephino. It started as an Elephant but some prick of a layer got their panties in bunch over the pachyderm monicker, now we're stuck with the "ino".

"inos" aside, this one damn fine, juicy Double IPA. It has a nose full of juicy tropical fruits, grapefruit, nectarine and pineapple with a hint of dry pine. It's no surprise that this 500ml beauty is sitting pretty in the finals.

In corner number two there sits a long time favorite, Desert Edge's Utah Pale Ale. For a low gravity beer this American Pale Ale is packed full of flavor. Cascade lovers are never disappointed with this one and when it's offered on cask, it takes UPA to new level..

The nose has a big citrus and pine perfume. The tatste starts with slight bitters of citrus zest then transformed to light biscut malts. The end is bitter and bready with a light crisp and dry finish.

Voting has been enthusiastic to say the least and I'm glad that you've all appreciated this little diversion that helps to break up the more mundane parts of our days. That being said, let's not ruin or taint the finish. We all have multiple devices that allow us to vote, please use them, it would be stupid not to. As your dad would say, "just use your head". Here is the bracket.

Congrats to Elephino & UPA

Yup. I said, "Taint".

New Beer Friday 4/13/12

Last week it was the Belgians. This week the Dutch attack along with Michigan. Michigan? Yeah, I guess it was bound to happen. Anyway, Bayou Mark managed to score four new beers from Brouwerij De Molen and added to their portfolio of Jolly Pumpkin sours.

De Molen Hemel & Aard: Translation: Heaven & Earth. Almost pitch black and opaque, small head. Furiously peated aroma, hiding the malt, licorice and dark chocolate somewhat. Very full bodied, thick mouthfeel, like fluid bread. Dark chocolate, loads of peat, lapsang souchong tea, chocolate cake, culminating in an almost endless aftertaste that also has licorice. Style Imperial Stout 9.5% abv.

De Molen Rook & Vuur: Translation - Smoke & Fire. No smoke without a fire goes an old saying. The result is this perfectly balanced beer with hints of smoke and an small fire on you tongue. Style: Smoke 8.2% abv

De Molen Amarillo: This beer got it's name from the American hop, one of the best hop varieties in the world Amarillo are a powerful hop in aroma, flavour and bitterness. Not a beer to drink as a session beer but one to enjoy. Style-Imperial/Double IPA 9.2% abv

De Molen Storm & Aneji: An Imperial/Double IPA: A hazy golden-orange colour with a rich firm white foam. Big fruity hop aroma with a little yeastiness of orange-peels, mango,pine-needles, peaches, hay and wet grass. Full-bodied with notes of yeast, blood oranges, mango, biscuits and orange-peels. Long orangey, juicy, bitter finish with touches of yeast and pine. Dry hopped with Czech hops.

Jolly Pumpkin Maracaibo Especial:
A rich brown ale inspired by the enigmatic monastic brews of Belgium, and the mysterious mist shrouded jungles of the tropics. Brewed with real cacao, and spiced with cinnamon and sweet orange peel for a sensual delight. A brew to be sipped, savored, and enjoyed!

Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca: Aged in large oak casks and refermented in the bottle, Calabaza Blanca is a Belgian Biere Blanche. Spiced with orange peel and coriander, you'll find it refreshingly tart, with a wonderfully dry finish.

There may be more added to this list later on in the day, so be sure to check back.

It looks like it's down to two pale ales in the Utah Beer Challenge. UPA vs. Eliphino. Watching the voting I can't say, everything was as ethical as we all would have liked but the voting was enthusiastic to say the least. Here are the brackets for the finals. They will begin on Monday morning and go 'till the end of the day Thursday.

Realize this is all for fun, but we'd still like to here your comments on the Challenge, both pros and cons.

Cheers!

Utah Beer Challenge: Final Four

Four beers. That's all we have left. One Double IPA, a Wild Saison, a Black Imperial IPA and a good old American Session Pale Ale. Personally, watching the Squatters sour showdown was bittersweet. How do you choose between two beloved children? And the battle for the Dark side, between Dubhe and Barrel of Russians really kept things interesting. Whatever the out come the finals will definitely be diverse. Voting is in the column to the right.

Updated Bracket is here.

Cheers!

A Beer Lovers Mimosa

Epic's award winning Witbier returns this today. And if that wasn't enough, starting today (April 10th) the brewery will be offering a brewery only special. A Blood Orange Wit. If your not able to get to the brewery to try it, Brewmaster Kevin Crompton will be doing another blood orange Wit in a cask that will be making it's way to the Mountain Brewers Festival in Idaho Falls, June 2nd. Sounds like my kind of Mimosa!

There's only a few more hours left to vote on Utah's Elite 8 beers. Tomorrow morning, we go straight to the final four, with the final beginning next Monday. Brackets are here.

Cheers!

Roosters Plans to Bottle

It seems like the logical step. Build a following with your beer, create a demand, then find a more practical way to get those beers home. Many Brewpubs in Utah are already doing it and many more intend to follow. But today is Roosters' day and we're glad to hear their beers will be busting out of the brewpub.

No idea yet if their beers will be only be 4% or if they plan any higher gravity beers. In the coming months we'll be giving you updates to their progress. As for now, Congrats to roosters! We look forward to to bringing your suds home.

What packaging would you prefer to see Rooster use bottles? cans? We've thrown up an extra poll in the column to the right to see what you as consumers would rather have.

The Elite 8 voting is underway. It goes 'till 11:59 pm Tues. Then we immediately go to the final Four Beers on Wednesday morning. Brackets are here.

Cheers!

New Beer Friday 4/6/12

New Beer Friday has some real treats for you this week. Bayou Mark has obtained two fabulous Belgian treats that'll make you squeal like Kent... well, like Kent squealing over new Belgian beers.

Omer Beer: Pours a bright golden yellow color with two fingers of white creamy head. The nose is of Belgian yeast, hints of citrus, bready notes and some grassy hops. The taste starts malty and bready with some yeast flavors. There is some grassy bitterness underlying the malt. Next comes a touch of alcohol sweetness that transitions into lightly sweet, malt and fades into a light bitterness that eventually turns dry and disappears. @Bayou

DeuS(Brut Des Flandres): The bottle presentation is beautiful. Pours a clear pale straw color with a white champagne-esque head that settles to larger bubbles. The nose is of light golden fruit with apple, pear, grape, slight citrus and bread. The taste starts with notes of fruity sweetness, spices, funk and yeast with hints of white grapes and pear. The finish is slightly phenolic with pleasant malty flavors in the background. The complexities are more pronounced the warmer it gets. @Bayou

Gordon Biersch beers are in at the Beerhive as well. Marzen, Maibock, Pils. Round Three is done! Check out the updated bracket here. Next week the Elite Eight voting will be on Monday & Tuesday and the Final Four, on Wednesday & Thursday Cheers!

Please Stop Cheating!

Just a quick heads up in regards to the Utah Beer Challenge voting. We do have the ability to identify IP address to see where vote stacking is coming from. This is all for fun, but let's not be dicks about it. Agreed?

A Zoigl Birthday Bier!

Believe it or not, our favorite lagering house, the Bohemian Brewery is ten years old this month. To celebrate, the brewery has some limited Edition 10 year Bohemian Brewery Pint Glasses and of course, a special new seasonal offering for the Occasion!

Bohemian's newest seasonal is an obscure traditional lager that hails from a small area of northeastern Bavaria near the Czech Republic, known as Zoigl Bier.

For centuries, Zoigl was brewed in brewhouses owned by the town or an association of homebrewers. The wort was then brought to the private cellars of the brewers, where it was lagered until done. Then the beer was tapped directly from the lagering tank and sold in the private rooms of the brewery, which were used as a pub.

While Bohemian's Zoigl isn't a collaborative Homebrew it does pay homage to it's nearly 700 year old roots. Zoigl is unfiltered, brewed with highly kilned malt, which gives the beer a slightly darker, deep amber, color and malty taste. Zoigl is also brewed with noble hops from the Hallertau region of Bavaria.

This is a limited release. I doubt it will make it to the end of April. It's available right now, only at the brewery in Midvale.

Prost!

Round Three - Part Two

Looks like Latter Day Stout managed to rally at the last minute to pull out a win over Cherny Bock. The second part of round three has two of the best pale ales going against each other while two of the states most highly rated beers enter the arena sooner than many had hoped.

Any predictions or observations?

Updated Bracket Here.

Cheers!

Utah Beer Challenge's Sweet16

Round Three begins now! This first part looks like it's gunna get dark with Cherny Bock & Latter Day Stout going head to head. I also know the Cockeyed Cooper/Elphino match-up is going to scar many hearts as well.

If you haven't checked out the brackets yet, here's how it's shaping up so far.

Cheers!
